Thomas was always told how fruitless it was to follow such fairy tales and occult writings. Spiritualism, his family and friends argued, was just a fad. Even Thomas believed it was silly for a man his age and profession to read so much about ghosts and goblins, but even engineers needed downtime. He had rested on his accolades before, but it was more than he ever expected that his hobby would be the source of his latest promotion.
Being asked to a secret project under the mad monk Rasputin was a great honor, Thomas thought. The chance to research and implement cutting edge technology hand in hand with mysterious eldritch tomes would've been more than enough for Thomas, not even accounting for the prestige such work would bring him. However, Grigori's plan of bringing the Thrice-Tenth Kingdom to Earth was as terrifying and dangerous as it was ambitious. Fantastic creatures and powers made the entire area unstable, turning Thomas's dream job into a nightmare. Easily the strangest event, however, was the arrival of a chicken legged hut. Such a funny sight to behold, it had reminded him of the stories he had heard in his youth. Fairy tales. But then again, everything he had been working on since being brought into this project was a fairy tale or another. He briefly wondered if Baba Yaga was really to be involved in the work at the facility.
The thought was quickly shut out by gunfire and shouting. From the hut, several creatures burst out and began fighting with the troops Grigori had stationed at the base. Some of the creatures were certainly human, which almost struck him as more bizarre than the oddities he had seen. However, he could certainly tell one thing, the newcomers were terrifying and powerful in ways never before seen in the world. As they searched the facility buildings and came upon him, Thomas begged for his life. He pleaded not to be slaughtered like the soldiers he witnessed on the field. One of the party, a being clad in medieval plate armor and two horns sprouting from the top of her head gazed him over, much like Rasputin had done when he observed the engineering department at work. However, while his gaze was full of malice, hers was compassionate. She reached out her hand towards his and told him to wait within the hut. Thomas thanked her profusely and made a beeline for sanctuary.
Hours passed before their return and before any explanation. The travellers told of a far off world known as Golarion and how it was endangered by an evil witch queen, daughter of Baba Yaga herself. Answers were short, however, for there was much work to be done. As they left through twisting halls, Thomas waited for a further eternity. When the heroes that had spared his life and fought for the fate of their world had returned, they came bearing boons, the daughter of the royal family, and Baba Yaga herself! Surely, he thought, that if tales of magic and grandeur were so attainable on Golarion, then he could make more of a name for himself there than at his home.
Thomas, with nothing tying him to Earth, asked two things of his new friends. One, to come with them to their home. And two, to learn the ways of the eldritch, esoteric, and arcane. He threw himself at the feet of these heroes, knowing the stories of Old Grandmother had asked high and terrible prices from whoever asked boons from her. On that day, the heroes had granted him mercy a second time. And so his story continues...
