Ashavan - I saw you have another Campaign Workbook in the current issue. Congrats! :)

Congrats Ahavan!

I did notice that there were only two Campaign Workbook articles in this issue. I hope that's not a trend. :(

Hey Tim, it was great meeting you in the writing seminars at Gen Con (your thousand mile trip to Indianapolis). You might remember me lamenting the fact that I had no regular group for playtesting, ideas, etc. Well, when it rains it pours - my kids want to restart a campaign where they reached level 8, and I've rounded up a few people from my board game group for a new Silver Marches campaign. Ages, oldest to youngest, are 44, 43 (me), 41, 33, 18, 18, 17, 15, and 11.

Gotta go - lots of work to do and a couple Class Act articles to write...

Not only was Erik working at the booth most of the time, when he wasn't there he was running seminars like "The Future of Dragon & Dungeon", "Writing for Dungeon" and "Writing for Dragon". Even if you don't plan on writing for the magazines, you might want to catch these next year if you can - The "sit down" comedy of Erik Mona can be very entertaining. It also seemed like James was always in the booth when I walked by - I don't think those guys had any time to wander the exhibit hall.

I'm not a staff member either, but I'm looking forward to seeing everyone. Since I certainly won't recognize most of the people on this messageboard, it would really help me out if everyone could wear a nametag with your messageboard name and icon. :)

So I got a "No thank you" on one adventure in the first batch right after Dungeon's big shakeout meeting, but I haven't heard anything on my second proposal yet - maybe that's a god thing. I guess I can always track Jeremy down at GENCON and get an update. Anyone else planning on being there? Maybe I'll see you in the "Writing for Dungeon" seminar.

I am, ahem, 42. I will be 43 in two weeks. Started playing in '78, right about the time the AD&D Player's Handbook came out. Picked up the DM Guide at GENCON '79. Looks like I'm reigning king of Old Guy Hill, at least in this thread.

When I'm putting together a query for an adventure for Dungeon, I'm always concerned that It'll get rejected because I use monsters that have already been seen enough in recent (or upcoming) issues. Well, I can't predict the future, but I can document the past. Here are all the monsters that have appeared in the past 6 months (issues 118-123), including the issues they appeared in. I made no attempt indicate the *main* bad guys, and where there was a monster like a "male half-fiend hill giant dire wereboar" I generally counted it in all categories. I also tried to list them the way they appear in the monster manual (blue dragons under "D" for dragon). Yeah, I know, I should have used this time to write for Campaign Workbook or something...

Has anyone ever put Craft(trapmaking) skill to good use? I'm tryng to be honest about the trapmaking abilities of an NPC, and based on the rules in the skill writeup and in chapter 3 of the Dungeon Master's Guide, I've come to these conclusions.

DC 20 is the lowest crafting difficulty, so this may not be worth trying until you have +10 skill (can't Take 20 when crafting).

Crafting even the very simple Swinging Block Trap (DMG p71) would cost 234 gp and take about 10 weeks to complete.

CR 3 and higher traps can cost thousands of gold and take a year or more to make.

The PCs manage to get an invitation to a feast in a dwarven fortress to celebrate the first knotting of a young dwarf noble's beard. The Ale stops flowing and the pig stops roasting when the stench from the castle's cesspit grows so strong with sulphur that not even the dwarves can stomach it. Guests begin leaving and a wretched digger sent into the pit to investigate doesn't return. Other guests begin disappearing and screams can be heard in the town beyond the fortress walls.

I bought the game at GENCON. It was $40 on Friday when I bought mine. My nephew had to pay $50 on Satruday, but by them we had played a couple games and he was willing to pay.

Its a visually appealing game - the terrain pieces all snap together easily and actually fit back into the box. There are enough unique abilities for each piece (appropriate to their period/theme) to keep the game interesting and encourage armies constructed from similar periods.

It's a good game - though I wouldn't say the best of all miniature games. It could be the best miniature game where I don't have to paint the figures!

The game also features special treasure/powerup tiles and a little bit of architectural terrain - enough to make some interesting scenarios other than "kill everyone".

I think it will really hit its stride in December/January when the expansions are released. The had an example expansion pack at GENCON - four roman legionaires (with higher defense if you keep them next to each other) and three roman archers (who could combine fire into a single attack). The expansion also came with new terrain tiles, and I suppose there will be new buildings and new terrain types in the future. A scenario book might be nice too :)

It's a very good, very portable, very easy, low barrier-to-entry game. (and if you have two you can make a huge map!)
