Check her out. She's even got a logo for Jaggere Golemworks. The crunch is complete and I will write the fluff tomorrow. I'm off to play GW2 right now. After 4 hours of photoshop, I deserve it.

Holy crap, that is by far the prettiest character sheet I've ever seen!

Matthew, be careful, lest I promote you to assistant DM, and task you with creating maps and handouts for your fellow players! :D

Yeesh, LastName! The Butcher is both compelling and horrifying at the same time! I'll admit that he's maybe just slightly out there for my personal tastes, but I don't see anything mechanically I'd outright veto. I can't wait to see how you role-play him in game (as well as the other PCs' reactions).

Butcher by Trade wrote:
If the character build and concept work out and meet with your approval, I'll pitch some ideas about how I think his addictions and pain should be played out, in game.

You've got my approval. I'm interested to see what you've got in mind.

Things are proceeding nicely. So then...

The timing of our campaign presents an interesting question at this point. Should I launch the IC thread this weekend, or would it be better to simply wait until the middle of next week? I don't want to kick things off to the sound of chirping crickets because everyone's too busy with holiday festivities to engage. Thoughts?

How are things coming, guys? It appears that the issues with Paizo's website have been resolved now. I don't know about the rest of you, but I had a lot of trouble loading pages yesterday.

DM RA would it be alright to take an elven racial trait from the ARG which makes her dazzled by daylight and gives her darkvision instead of low-light vision?

Okay by me!

Not a bard. I'll put it together tomorrow and the theme will be lycanthropy. Sort of.

Hmm...

Curiosity piqued.

I have dibs on Prudence if we go that route. I'll pass on both Hope and Charity as I've dated them previously...

LOL, just caught this on reread! Well played, sir.

I'd be willing to house rule that Portia may be a follower of Torag rather than Iomedae, if that would be your preference, Matthew.

Pedwiddle wrote:

So I was doing a little more research into sorcerers last night, and came upon this combination:

Ifrit Elemental (Fire) Tattooed Sorcerer

I'm envisioning someone from the Sklar-Quah Shoanti clan. Tattoos are big in their society, so it would fit that they'd draw some power from them. Ifrit should be fairly fun to roleplay (I won't make it too annoying) and is fitting (somewhat) with the Cinderlands origin. I'm thinking they'd follow Sarenrae, to keep up the fire theme as well as a path toward redemption.

Any objections, or should I start building?

No objections here, I think this idea sounds fun. I like the Shoanti a lot, and have no reservations about an ifrit. I say get crackin'!

Dread wrote:
so id say that we are a no on both the 7 virtues and the religious connection.

Agreed, it appears that there are enough reservations from enough players that it would be unwise to pursue it further. I really only wanted to move forward with one of those ideas if there was overwhelming enthusiasm from everyone. Still, it does give me some food for thought for future potential campaigns, and for that, I am thankful!

Morinn "Alskazi Du'Durazi" wrote:
Finished his background and equipment. click his profile and peruse oh wonderous master of our game (and soon to be allies)

Morinn passes the eyeball test, well done Dread!

I'm hoping we can settle the issue of PCs as the 'Seven Virtues' question soon. If we do go that route, I would like to call for a seventh player, and I'd like to get that ball rolling asap.

So, if everyone could please respond...yea or nay?

Ethan Sower wrote:

Ta-da! Ethan has been Cleric-a-fied!

Huzzah! I really like Ethan, glad to have him on board.

All, I certainly anticipate some slowdown over the holidays. It's a very busy time for my family as well, so no worries if things are a bit slow.

Wow, you guys are flooring me here, with the idea of each PC being 'called' in accordance with being a representative of one of the seven heavenly virtues. My thought? I think that's a really cool idea, and I'd be all for it. Of course, if we did go that route, I'd be tempted to go ahead and take on a seventh PC. We couldn't have one of the virtues go unrepresented, now could we?

However, and this is a firm stance....I think it important that we have unanimous buy-in from all of the accepted players before moving forward with such a plan. It wasn't part of the original recruiting process, so I won't force anyone to go along with it if undesired.

Pedwiddle, I'll be brutally honest with you. The thought of a kitsune in the party makes me grit my teeth. It makes me think too much of furry anime... which is fine, but it's not the sort of thing I like mixed with my D&D/Pathfinder. A gnome would be fine.

I'm headed out the door for work, so only brief comments. I will say you guys are doing a great job, approaching the creation of characters exactly how I'd hoped! That bodes well.

FW, I'm ready to start the game whenever you are. I was thinking, off hand, maybe a week or so to get everything settled and finished? Is that enough time? Too much? Everyone's thoughts welcome.

LastName, I'm okay with a paladin. I'm not a DM who lurks over your shoulder scrutinizing every word and deed looking for a reason to make you fall. I also have been known to house rule that CG or NG paladins are acceptable if this brings them more in line with the tenets of his/her deity.

Keep up the good work, fellas!

edit: Wanted to add, Mike, I really like your thinking on the Dwarven Rogue. At this point, I'm really hoping you'll play him.

I think for this game, I'll resist my grognard-ish urges, and we'll use a 20 point buy for ability scores. If it's good enough for organized play, it's good enough for me.

Dread wrote:
Good work there Matt, and RA if itd take you a week itd take me a month ;)

Actually, I'm sure it would take me a month too. I was being overly optimistic. :)

Cuchulainn, if you do make the switch to Cleric, would you still make your guy a devotee of Erastil? I'm a fan Old Deadeye, so I hope so...

Mike, of your possibilities, the ones that bring the biggest smile to my face are...Shoanti Ranger, Varisian Sorcerer, Dwarven Rogue. If my two cents matter at all...

Matthew, you 'threw together' those concepts? I think it would take me a week to put that PDF together! :D

There are a lot of good ideas there, and I'm curious as to what your fellow players have to say. As for me, I think your golemancer could very well be great fun! She would definitely be challenging in some ways as well, not that that's a bad thing.

No issues here.

Cuchulainn wrote:

Thanks for choosing me, as well.

If you would rather I not play Ethan, I'm fine with that. Or, if you would just like me to tweak him, I can do that as well.

It's not a problem for me if Ethan is your first choice. I just wanted everyone to come into this process with a relatively clean slate, so that we don't have everybody fixed on characters that overlap party roles. It seems that most everyone else is pretty flexible, so I don't anticipate any conflict. If necessary, you can tweak him later to be consistent with PC build guidelines.

Edward Sobel wrote:
sounds cool good luck to all and someday i may finally play a runlords game that goes beyond the first encounter.

I wish you the best, Edward! Thanks again.

So, gentlemen, let's get down to the business at hand. The world will need saving at some point, I'm sure of it. We'll need a half dozen intrepid adventurers to make it happen.

Let's begin with your ideas...preferences on classes, races, and party roles. Anything you feel strongly about playing, or not playing?

If you don't have it already, please do download (for free!) and read the Rise of the Runelords Anniversary Edition player's guide. I'd prefer that all of the PCs be newly arrived in Sandpoint (probably for the Swallowtail Festival to commemorate the new temple), so that you can all explore the town from a common starting point.

I'm leaning toward having you generate ability scores using a 15 point buy (for fairness' sake), but there is a part of me that wants to do things the traditional way and roll dice for your scores instead. Your feedback on this matter is welcome. I could go either way.

We'll give each of you a couple of traits. I encourage you to select one of those presented in the Player's Guide, but I won't insist on it.

Starting PC wealth will be average as per your class.

As you think on what sort of PC you'd like to play, remember that flaws and foibles make for interesting group dynamics, but at the end of the day we want a party of heroes who can work together and get the job done.

I'm eager to read your ideas. Let me know how I can help!

So, it looks like I've made my decision. I'd like to offer first dibs on a spot in the game to the following applicants...

Ethan Sower
Matthew/'Black Esme' Proust
Dread
Pedwiddle
LastNameOnEarth
French Wolf

Ultimately, I suppose it just came down to a sense that I may have the most in common with the above list of players. Please, if you weren't chosen, don't take it as a personal indictment. I'd have loved to have brought along a few others of you, if I didn't think it might overcrowd the game.

I have some names at the top of an alternates list, as well, if any of the above should have a change of mind. Please don't abandon the thread immediately, but wait and see how things shake out.

Sincere thanks to all of you for your interest, enthusiasm, and encouragement!

Discussion thread will go live shortly. If you six would kindly join me hither, we can commence work on some PCs.

I'm glad to see so much enthusiasm for this game, and for my unorthodox method of player selection. Most of you seem to have picked up on exactly what I'm looking for, which is most appreciated. It makes the selection process a difficult one, however.

Nevertheless, I expect that later today I will be able to announce my six preferred choices to play. Thanks again to all of you!

French Wolf wrote:
Also you mentioned daily posting, but does that include weekends? I only say this because DM burnout has been for a problem for at least one of my friends with a family.

My weekends are little bit sporadic, as are those of most adult players, I'd imagine. I work every other weekend, and often make family plans on the off weekend. That said, I still expect to be able to check in and post at least one time on most days, even on the weekend. Exceptions arise, of course, such as being out of town, or having illness in the family. I'll be forthright about these exceptions, so my players will know what to expect. Hopefully, my players will extend the same courtesy to me.

The point is that I'm taking the long view, treating the game as a marathon, not a sprint. Inevitably, there will be hiccups, but I've no intention of going AWOL (something which happens all too frequently, I understand). If I go a day without a post here or there, it doesn't mean the sky is falling. :)

Adventurer #33, I neglected to mention that, since I inadvertently ninja'd your bio this morning, you are indeed on the list for consideration. Sorry to leave you hanging.

Many apologies to The Thousandfold and Deylinarr for pulling the rug out from under your hopes! I freely admit I was unprepared for how many strong applicants would appear, and how quickly. If in the future I ever recruit again for a game, I will be sure to not offer false hopes for how long the window will be open...or, I'll set a firm date and stick to it. Lesson learned. In the meantime, please do feel free to follow the game if you like. One never knows when a replacement player may be needed.

French Wolf wrote:

Runelord Ascendant could you tell me if you plan to stick close to the AP? Not that either of my characters have made it very far but it gives us a little more info on your style of GMing.

Cheers

I do plan to stick closely to the plot as presented in the AP (though some details may change as to best fit the tendencies of the group). I've tried my hand at homebrew adventures, but I find that the professionals just do it so much better. Does that mean that we run the risk of the occasional railroad job? I suppose so, but I figure you all must be at least somewhat okay with that, else why apply for a game running an AP in the first place, hmm? ;)

KenderKin wrote:

Tough choices.....

Maybe keep everyone and run two groups ; )

Tough choices, indeed. Seeing how I'm already going to be faced with some difficult cuts, I think I'll go ahead and close the recruitment process now. I'll add that this is happening much sooner than anticipated, which is a testimony to how many terrific players have expressed interest (well above my cap of six PCs)!

Sorry, but I don't think there's any possibility of running two groups through this. I'm very cognizant of the danger of overextending myself, and I really want to focus on one group and running the game to my best ability.

So then...I'll need to select six players from the list of those who have already posted in this forum. Today is pretty busy, as I have an early family holiday get together for most of the day. I'll think on things tonight, and post my choices once I've made the difficult decision. It may be tonight, tomorrow, or Monday at the latest.

If any of you have any further questions for me, please don't hesitate. Thank you one and all!

Question for Ethan Sower:

Spoiler:
Are you interested in playing in the campaign only as Ethan? Would you have any desire to create a new player character from scratch to take part in the game, or would that be a deal breaker? Let me know your thoughts.

I'm going to revise my earlier estimate...at this rate, I can't see holding open the recruiting process for more than another day or so, tops. Several of you folks just look like such wonderful people to game with! We'll have a strong party of six in short order, methinks.

Hello Runelord Ascendant Wanted to let you know that I think your recruitment method is spot on. I recently (just last week) started a Serpent's Skull game and got over 30 great characters and had to get them down to 6 - not the easiest of tasks.

Want to wish you luck in your first endeavor and to tell you from where I sit you are starting off on the right foot.

Have fun everyone.

Thank you for the well wishes! I appreciate the neighborly sentiment. :)

Ævux wrote:

Okay, here is my important questions.. I'm going to throw together a character. Human, Bard, Archeologist. Stats?

Is there any other race that gets the Humans' favored class racial for bard?

Truthfully, I don't really want to get too far into character creation mode until I have selected a roster of players. I think the PC creation phase of the game will go better if everyone takes an interactive approach. You should know up front that I won't do much more than glance at any character sheet you put together at this time. With that said, if you still want to work on a PC sheet, I'd say use a 15 point ability score buy as a baseline. As for your second question, not to my knowledge.

MiniGM wrote:
Do you know when you are going to close recruitment?

I'll most likely refrain from making any decisions until the weekend has passed. That said, I could see closing the process sooner if I find six prospective players that I just can't turn away. I'll tell you right now that there are already at least three very strong possibilities here.

KenderKin wrote:

Question

Races and classes you are open to?

Excellent question!

So, perhaps unsurprisingly, I tend to be a bit of a traditionalist here. I take a lot of my fantastic inspiration from Tolkien and those who followed in his steps. I have a romanticized attachment to the idea of a multi-racial 'fellowship' of heroes (dwarf, elf, hobbit, etc.) having come together to combat a great evil. :)

That said, I'm certainly open to character concepts which diverge from those traditions. The most important thing is that your PC should inspire you to breathe life into him/her as a three dimensional character. I suppose, therefore, that it might be more instructive to list a few things that I explicitly don't like. The following I will probably just flat out disallow:

-Evil aligned PCs (or really, any PC that can't play nicely with others...including the over-zealous LG Paladin perhaps?)
-Monks
-Summoners
-Ninja/Samurai

I'm also a little bit leery of Gunslingers and non-core races, but I can be persuaded to allow those choices with a terrific character concept. If anyone is interested in playing a non-core race, I think I would limit the possibilities to those listed here.

Most Archetypes should be okay too, if you're interested in selecting one of those.

Thanks for all of the responses so far! I'm really encouraged to see so many interesting folks take a shine to my ideas already. Lots of food for thought. As I peruse, are there any questions for me?

Hi all, first time Pathfinder GM here! For lack of a tabletop role-playing game group at the moment, I'm really excited to have a go at a pbp. There's a great community of gamers on these boards, and I hope to join in and contribute to the fun. Personally, I love creative writing, storytelling, and character development. Thus, I'm hoping to attract 4-6 players of a like mindset for a Rise of the Runelords Adventure Path game.

There are a few caveats to consider before expressing interest in this game...

1. As I said, I'm new to the ruleset (though I am a veteran player and GM of many other role-playing games, including some experience with D&D 3rd Edition). Therefore, expect some mistakes to be made. Further, I'm of the mindset that the rules should serve the story, not the other way around. Certain details may be handwaved occasionally, if I feel that the letter of the rules is a hindrance to the game's flow. Helpful reminders from players are welcome, but I am a firm believer that the GM is the final arbiter, not the rulebook.

2. The game should move at a steady, but modest, pace. Most days, I will post one or two times. I hope players will be able to do the same. There may be some days that I am unable to post at all, though this should be rare...and I will try to give advance notice when possible. Players who are accustomed to a furious multitude of posts per day may become frustrated.

3. I'm a fairly low-tech DM, though willing to try to learn new things. Nevertheless, I expect that often we will run combats with no tactical maps. There are two reasons for this. First, I fear that for me, mapmaking will become a huge time sink, which could hinder the game's progress. Second, I enjoy writing cinematic combat descriptions, and I hope my players will feel the same. I have found that it's easier to do this immersively when not counting out squares on a grid. I will discuss the handling of combat further with my players as we develop the campaign; for now, I just want to make sure prospective players know what to expect.

With all that being said...if interested, let's talk a bit. I'm not looking for characters right now, I'm looking for compatible role-players. I want to take my time and get this group right. So introduce yourself, tell me something about yourself, your family, your interests. How long have you been playing Pathfinder? Other role-playing games? What are some of your other hobbies? Movies, books, comics, video games? Are you involved in any other pbp games on these boards? What are you, as a player, looking for in a game?

Maybe this is an odd way to recruit for pbp, but I think it might pay dividends. Here, I'll start things off:

I'm Ted, 38 years old, married father of two young boys (4 and 5). We live in the Midwestern United States. I work in the healthcare field, which sometimes leads to odd/long hours...partly why I'm looking into pbp as a creative role-playing outlet. I collect a lot of comic books (I have about 8,000), mostly super-hero stuff. My wife and I watch a fair bit of TV together, especially The Amazing Race, Modern Family, The Big Bang Theory, and New Girl. I'm pretty into playing Skylanders with my boys right now (sometimes without them too...don't tell!) I got hooked on D&D upon laying eyes on the AD&D 1st edition Monster Manual in a hobby shop when I was in 2nd grade, and I've never looked back. I've tried my hand at playing probably two dozen different role-playing games over the years, and I still love the thrill of dreaming up new characters to play.

Recruiting is open until I say it's not. :) So then...who's up for a game?
