background:

Roran was just an average kid from Barlily, a decently sized town. His mother was an elf by name of Alaria, his father, one of the town guard by name of Don. His father taught him some martial skill, mostly with the spears and crossbows that most in the small militia unit used, however as Roran grew, he become more intrigued in bladed weaponry. He worked a time for the local blacksmith, a good friend of his father, in exchange for a blade, one which Roran had helped to craft. Time passed and one day, when he was 15 he stumbled upon something strange down by the river. It looked like a large egg, except it radiated cold. Intrigued, Roran took it back to his home. He hid it from his parents while he thought about what to do when, merely a couple days later it hatched! The creature Roran saw took his breath away, a baby dragon!. Not knowing what to do, he took it too his parents who were more shocked than he was. Eventually, they agreed to keep it. For over a year, they kept the hatchling as it grew, and it caused more than its fair share of damage as its curiosity got it into more trouble than a cat. Due to this many of the local kids either were kept from being friends with Roran, or were to jealous or scared to, save one girl by name of Mia, who was fascinated with his... exotic... pet.

Soon, it was bigger than most dogs. It was about this time that the dragon started speaking. Mostly to Roran, in his head, but slowly it began learning their tongue. In fact, in time, the dragon would become quite talkative, speaking the language fluently and slowly came to be regarded as a friend, rather than a pet. After another year, it was to large to fit into the house at all, and was almost big enough to carry Roran up into the air with it. Roran, possibly due to his forming bond with the dragon, slowly grew a fierce wanderlust and so started taking trips across the land. Eventually a bond formed between the two of them allowing them understanding of the other. As time passed there was nothing Roran loved more than an excuse to ride Azreal, Azreal was the name he had given the dragon to which the dragon wholly approved. Roran wanted nothing more than to sore the skies to the ends of the world, one day, he vowed, he would do so. Him and Azreal, and maybe Mia, who, to great trouble to Azreal, Roran insisted be allowed to accompany them on their forays. While Azreal could easily carry Roran, it was tiring and troublesome to carry another. However the Dragon understood the feelings between the two and only mildly complained about it.

Things were going well, oddly enough having a dragon in the town didn't attract any large crowds, likely because most in the town kept to the town. However A certain man heard of the dragon and the boy, and grew interested. He went on to kidnap Mia in an attempt to force Roran to work for him. However, things went bad, and it seems he ended up killing the girl. Before Roran and Azreal could find him however, he managed to slink away. They have searched for months and finally found something that may lead them to him. Korvosa, he is likely hiding there. A dragon might attract a lot of attention, but Roran didn't care. The more noise he made, the more scared that man would become.

Note on Mia: I will leave this up to you GM, the way I have it, no one found Mia's corpse, it appeared as if she died, however she -could- be alive. Where, and doing what, can be up to you. I'd like to think she lives still, but I'm fine with either for character development.

personality: Roran is a free spirit filled with wanderlust. He isn't particularly well learned, and often is a bit selfish in his actions (although usually not intentionally so). He is friendly and often only sees the good in people, something that has, so far, not harmed him. He enjoys thinking of himself as becoming a hero on more than few occasions as well. After the death of Mia, he has attempted to keep this same spirit, but not wrestles with the fact that if he can, he should go out of his way to protect people so the same doesn't happen to them. He has taken to brooding at times, when the moon is high and he questions many things in life. It is likely his one companion in Azreal that keeps him going.

Azreal Personality: Azreal has grown to be much like his rider Roran, while his natural curiosity has been somewhat tempered, its still there. And he often gets himself into trouble because of it still. He has grown more than a bit sarcastic, and enjoys spending time with the human and elves of the town. While he causes his fair share of troubles, he almost always has the best of intentions. While he doesn't fully understand yet the yearning for vengeance in Roran, and while he often times advises against such rash things, he shares his pain due to their connection and often is the one to lift the spirits of Roran when his mind falls into dark places.
