Not gonna lie, kinda peeved that we don't have standard access to the aasimar, changeling, dhampir, duskwalker, and tiefling heritages especially, when in-world most of these have had an actual character possibility since like Year 2 of PFS1.

Don't get me wrong, I love the idea of being able to 'earn' access to things...but why not make those type of things outside of these core books? Elementals, hybrid races, etc. - make those the uncommon/rare access options. Or...at least let us know before we decide to buy the book that a good chunk of ancestry/heritages are off the table by default; while I never believed all of the options would be available, this just seems minimal and a little bit of a kick-in-the-pants.

Liberty's Edge

I like using baby food jars or wood finials (Pic Here with ticky-tak (the blue sticky stuff). If you get a finial, make sure the one end is flat and the finial is fitting to your hand, then just remove the screw if one is included. Pretty cheap either way - finials you can find at any Home Depot, Lowes, etc.

Some other thoughts from reading through past posts:

  • The current WBL version - works, but sure, the WBL may be unbalanced a little - most of the other 'reasons' behind this change should really not even be considered.
  • The proposed change - horrible idea for so many reasons that has all been said; forming tables probably being the biggest issue
  • Double XP for playing up - essentially the same penalty for playing up as the proposed change, just with a different name and disguise - and think about this - do you want the so-called "greedy" player who always plays up to reach those higher tiers in 1/2 the time?
  • Changing the Fame caps - the fame caps are pretty solid as they are in matching magic items with tier - altering these by 2-4 levels would be a very bad idea
  • Having a specific amount of gold for every level within a mod - brilliant. I mean, I like getting a ton of gold when I play up, but if you're looking for balance, there you go. Everyone gets rewarded for the level of their assumed contribution to the party. Even RP-wise this makes sense - the veteran of 8 years would get more than the relatively new 5th year adventurer, etc.

And I'm sorry, saying it's too hard for scenario writers to write for various levels of wealth/power - they're already doing that. If you write a 5-9 tier mod, the first thing you would look at is how to challenge levels 5-9, yes? From there, I'm guessing you're probably looking at encounters with CRs from around 5-8 for low tier and 8-11 for high tier. So maybe the CR 11 encounter isn't as hard for a twinked 9 as it will be for a 'vanilla' 9. So what? This game is about diversity at many levels - races, cultures, regions, experience, fame, wealth, skills, magical heritage, material goods - why look to limit what someone wants to do? If we disregard that idea, then we might as well all play pregens, forming a perfect party of 4-6 (cleric, fighter, wizard, rogue and one or two support chars) and call it a day. Of course, every party will die, but whatever.

Or, you don't put this bad idea into place and things are ok when two wizards, a melee rogue, a negative cleric and a pregen sit down at a 5-9 table because one or more of them probably has a little more utility or support from magical items.

And once again...we all should ask, "as of April 17, 2013, in the middle of season 4, is this even a real issue anymore???" Honestly, fewer and fewer people play up since mid-Season 3, and as long as the mods continue the challenge and excitement level they're at now, it will continue to decrease.

Now, in reply to this:

Michael Brock wrote:
And then we come full circle and I will quote Jiggy's post from last page."Unless I'm missing something, every single situation used as a case against the "Podcast System" can be solved by one or two people just deciding to NOT be the most important person for one day."

Why are we making the people that want to play up the bad guy here? What about the reverse scenario? APL comes out at 7 for a table of 6: four people want to play up, two down - because they feel they are too important to die, don't want to "lose their eidolon" (yes, I've heard it, though at a lower level), etc. - why should the four who want to play up cave and/or get penalized at that table??

Finally - bullying. My first response to everyone...grow a pair, it's not like your life is in danger here. My second response...as I said in reply to VonHasseln, bullies are going to bully - no...matter...what. M. Brock, you should know this as much as anyone with your background. The solution to this is, in so many words, to kick that player out or as the GM, force the up/down vote and go with the majority. These types of players are one of the reasons why VCs, VLs, etc. run these cons - they are there to supervise things (among other duties). I understand this whole 'protect me from bullies' thing is way bigger than PFS (i have 7 year olds in a Catholic grade school with a dedicated program dealing with bullying, and disagree with about 50% of what they preach), but you're supposed to be somewhat mature to play this game...so... be mature about playing this game!!

And M.Brock - people really have trouble figuring out slow-track?? Wow.

BTW, in the spirit of offering a solution instead of just trying to refute things - I think having a gold amount based on character level in each mod is the best option all-around here. It's simple, clean and is most likely the "fairest of them all...."

OK, my two long-winded rants are over, sorry if I offended anyone, that was not the point to any of it.

Michael my friend, you typically have some good thoughts, but I have to disagree with you on a number of items here.

Michael VonHasseln wrote:
We hear all the time that the scenarios aren't challenging enough. That can be traced back to characters with above average WBL.

That might be one of the reasons, but this can also be traced back to people building min-max characters, building 'in teams', dipping for specific skills, etc. This also ties back to authors writing scenarios that were too simple; starting with mid-to-late Season 3 and so far, all of Season 4, the challenge and resulting 'oh $^!t' factor have increased significantly. Additionally, it seems because of the new challenges, quite a few people who used to play up, do not. That type of change was a good remedy (planned or not) for this issue.

Michael VonHasseln wrote:
When you have more than your average of wealth, you can afford solutions others can't... adamantine back-up weapons, cheap wands, etc.

Why is this a bad thing? Each player/character is going to be different. Even looking at this from an RP viewpoint, not all adventurers are the same, even at the same experience level. And as you mentioned also, Fame/PP does a good way of hampering some of this concern anyway.

Michael VonHasseln wrote:
And then factor in the intimidation factor of experienced players brow beating new players into playing up with them so they can break the WBL. I've seen this happen and those new players never return. All because some players get greedy... is that the message we want to give?

I'm sorry, but this is a really misguided reason, and one that seems to be a main piece of this change. Simply put, people who are acting like d!ck$ because of that are going to act like d!ck$ for some other reason. You know we play up a lot because of the character builds we have...and yeah, we may try to convince a player to play up, ensuring them they will be just fine. But bully them? No, cuz (most people believe) we're not a bunch of d!ck$ - if we have to play at level or down because the table wants to, so be it - it's just a game. Using this as a reason for change in WBL is futile and again, misguided - you're not going to change the minds of the jerks. In fact if nothing else, you just made it worse. :)

Michael VonHasseln wrote:
All in all, the solution on the table might be bitter to swallow, but it was placed there as a medicine for the problem.

Maybe, but only in the same way one would amputate a foot to fix a broken toe - you're not solving the root cause of the problem and at the same time introducing more pain.

Again, please don't take any of this as personal - I am only trying to have a constructive discussion/debate, and your earlier post happened to be one I focused on. See ya tomorrow bud.

P.S. Come to Cape ComicCon this weekend!!!!

Is there an updated version of what to add for the AE version if you have 5 or 6 players instead of 4? I know there used to be one...

Liberty's Edge

Mark - or anyone else that can give me a solid answer,

What is the call for using creatures multiple times in one encounter when only one pawn exists in the box and it's not part of the minis?

For instance (CR/Tiers aside), if I wanted to have an encounter with 2 Iron Golems, can I do that or do I have to limit it to just one?

Thanks for any help, and sorry if this has been asked - couldn't find it when searching.

Liberty's Edge

Here's a thought or two to consider about wearing a shirt vs. simply having a shirt.

First off, wearing a shirt at the table really doesn't do much for promoting PFS/Paizo if you think about it. We are there because we already are into PFS/Paizo...wearing it outside the room, yeah, totally...but that's not the question. In the room for your re-roll, it honestly doesn't do much for promoting.

Secondly, if you're not wearing it, show the GM you have it and ask if that's OK or not. If they say no, then they say no.

However...GM's must consider that at multi-day cons like GenCon, there's enough people who already don't know how to take care of their hygiene. As a player or GM, I'd rather players wear a shirt no more than one day...sometimes less! Being slightly not-skinny myself, there were days I hit my hotel room to change shirts and 'freshen up' so I didn't have to worry about that issue, because honestly, who wants to sit next to a BO factory that is adding to the haze of gamer-funk??

Purely from that aspect alone am I as a GM am more than happy with you just showing me the shirt, because for me, that's already showing you are backing and helping to promote PFS/Paizo simply by that purchase.

But do I let players share shirts? No. That's not the point. You want a re-roll...buy a shirt.

And please, no one throw the "well, they should have 3-4 shirts at a con like GenCon" argument at me. I like Paizo, I like their shirts, but spending $75-$100 for 3-4 tees is beyond many gamers' budgets.

Thus for me, if you have one, show it to me and I'll be more than happy to let you have that re-roll.

Liberty's Edge

Ahhh, thought we had enough for two. Oh well, if you need an extra at any point, please keep in mind, sounds like a fun campaign!

Liberty's Edge

fnord - I will hopefully have my final writeup to you tonight, just trying to finish a paper for my master's degree class that ends tonight!!

Liberty's Edge

Sooo, I think I got phantom-deleted...I could have sworn I posted this earlier...oh well.

I'll be posting more information later, but here's the quick-run. I'd like to run an Advanced Half-Celestial Aasimar Stormborn Sorcerer 20/Savant 1 (Pathfinder Savant actually, but thought I would remove that "flavor").

Basic story:
A prophecy was told that one day an aasimar would be born not simply have celestial blood in his heritage, but be born from the mating of a celestial male and a human woman proficient in the sorcering ways of lightning, thunder and rain. This individual would study, train...evolve...and take up the mantle of both his mother and father, becoming a Custodian of the planes. The prophecy has been mostly fulfilled...the Custodian feels the pull...but cannot quite tell what plane he is being pulled to....is it Heaven? Elysium? Nirvana? Or even the Astral Plane? Where does his destiny lie?

Just getting some info out to show I'm really interested - will get more up soon!

Liberty's Edge

Right, and I know that's how you're doing it too, fnord...I was just wondering if Dream was going to do it differently. Couple years ago when I played in an epic game the GM used a limit version like I mentioned - I believe at the time he said you have "Level Gold" as usual, and you may craft up to X (5 or 6, say) items, none of which could have a value of over XXXXXX ($30000). Yeah, it basically gave crafters a little more money, but nothing hugely game-breaking (I mean...it's epic...it's already broken :) )

One other question Dream - are you applying templates like monster races? Like if I have a CR+2 template on a human, do I get all 25 levels, or am I stopping at 23? I've seen this ran both ways is why I'm asking.

Thanks again!

Liberty's Edge

Hey Dream...this is kind of a 1/2 mechanics-1/2 char dev question....sorta going along with the "how much gold question" already brought up, how are you going to handle crafting?

Will our starting equipment be at full price (reflecting value of items), or will you allow crafted items to be purchased at 1/2 price - say within some limit (like X items total or X items per class level, or X gp can be spent on crafting, etc.)? Asking only because it might influence my class choices.

Thanks!

Liberty's Edge

Fnord, wasn't sure if you missed my question up there about the half celestial template (since you have posted since then)...just looking for an answer so I can write my answers up, since obviously that will have a large impact on my story.

Thanks!

Liberty's Edge

Thanks for the answer....one more question. Are you allowing templates? Like half-celestial, for example?

Liberty's Edge

Once my Internet starts working again (I'm on my iPad right now), I plan on submitting a Cleric/Divine Scion of Sarenrae, probably Elven, who awes everyone in his/her presence...

Which leads me to one question I wasn't totally clear about...my initial idea was to go Cleric 10, Divine Scion 10...is this allowed per your rules?

And after 20, would i have to then go back to Cleric, or could i go into Holy Vindicator for another prestige class?

Green, maybe black.

Thanks fnord!

Liberty's Edge

Jelani - since the Ogrekin is a CR+1, am I starting out with only 2 class levels, or am I starting with 3?

And in applying the template...I start with a human with their racial abilities, then apply the Ogrekin template, is that right? This is the first time I've had to apply one to a character.

Liberty's Edge

Heh, Kraden up there is Ricky Bobby...picked the wrong alias!

Liberty's Edge

That would be great Ludi - and congrats Kyb!

Liberty's Edge

I'm a very active PFS player who's getting back into PbP; I have a couple new level 2s or 3s I could bring out...any idea what might be needed at the moment?

Liberty's Edge

Definitely in for playing/applying for this. Epic is rough, tough and a lot of fun with the right people, but a pretty decently balanced team is one thing needed IMO too.

Kudos to at least the two peeps who have started to step up, but Dream, I personally throw my vote in for you (no offense fnord, I just happen to like Dream's rules a bit better). Let us know if you are going to do it!

And....BOOM, there goes the Mike Brock dynamite....

Hero to the masses.

And for those one or two that asked about why the ban-hammer wasn't dropped on crazy archers, the entire Summoner or Alchemist classes, etc. when these were...some have already said it, but I'll toss my 18 copper in (yes, I consider my opinion 9 times as important as usual..ahem...

I believe these were all banned because of either flavor or what I'll call "table brokenness". The Undead Lord, Viv Alch and Gravewalker - flavor and nearing that odd line that no one wants to cross since this supposed to be an organized game for the masses (including youngins).

The summoners? Master is out, I would say, because if you aren't TOTALLY prepared ahead of time, one turn will most likely last approximately 18 hours once you get going into the class. This isn't true for everyone, but it will be for the masses probably, and in any case, having say 23 aurochs roaming the table will be fun for awhile, and then it will probably just get boring for everyone else.

I haven't seen the synth in play, but I can say I have never heard anyone say they thought that archetype was a good idea (including myself) because of just how ridiculous it is. I mean, you give up being two entities to become this Ben-10-like (I have six year olds, gimme a break) super structure. What I think it comes down to is the Synth idea is broken from the start without even trying. All other builds you at least have to invest feats, gold, etc. in to break - this one you don't have to do anything.

Liberty's Edge

6 people marked this as a favorite.

I hate to be the %&^%%# who's quoting cheesy lines from the past, but seriously people, can't we all get along?

Paizo opens up three races - that is three more than anyone honestly thought were going to be opened.

They took away some classes that should have been taken away. Sucks for some people, but kudos to Paizo for that - that was a tough call I'm sure.

Those people get an ENTIRE REBUILD of all those levels; sure, a stat allocation would be nice, and maybe should be allowed...but at this moment, it's not...yes, that might suck, but those who have to deal with it, will do so...the rest of us who don't, let's all just stop belittling others about it, yes?

For those that say munchkins are evil, selfish, soul-sucking imps who are hurting others...please, just stop. Those arguments make no sense. This is a game...a team game and an individual game...we are all going to play what we want, whether its min-maxed well to overpower yourself, min-maxed poorly to gimp yourself, or straight up balanced. There...is...no...right...way. Should you RP your stats, sure...but don't question how I 'might' play the game because I show up with two sixes in my stat block. That only makes you look the fool, not me.

So seriously, there is some good stuff here, and very little for anyone to be in too much pain over. Those that have to rebuild will mourn for a time, surely, and we should let them....and you know what? Maybe even assist them by throwing out actually helpful ideas for their soon-to-be-dust synthesists or master summoners or gravewalkers, etc! Wow, helpful? Huh, how novel.

In any case, it's nice to see some changes, and game on.

OK, stepping down from my pedestal to go sit in the crowd again.

Liberty's Edge

Just saw this thread, and it sounds great - I love random dungeons/campaigns. Ran one over on dndonlinegames for awhile a couple years ago, had a blast. Now I just have to hope more people apply so I get to play!!

In any case, here are my rolls!

Ability Scores:
6d6 ⇒ (1, 4, 4, 6, 3, 6) = 24 (6,6,4) = 16
6d6 ⇒ (4, 4, 1, 3, 4, 2) = 18 (4,4,4) = 12
6d6 ⇒ (2, 5, 4, 2, 3, 3) = 19 (5,4,3) = 12
6d6 ⇒ (4, 6, 5, 2, 2, 6) = 25 (6,6,5) = 17
6d6 ⇒ (2, 6, 3, 1, 3, 2) = 17 (6,3,3) = 12
6d6 ⇒ (6, 5, 6, 5, 3, 1) = 26 (6,6,5) = 17

Race:
1d48 ⇒ 47 = Ogrekin
Beneficial Deformity:
1d6 ⇒ 5 = Vestigial Limb: Vestigial third arm (can't be used to use items) grants a +4 racial bonus on grapple checks.
Disadvantageous Deformity:
1d6 ⇒ 6 = Weak Mind: The ogrekin's head is huge and misshapen. It gains a –2 penalty on Will saving throws.

Class:
1d22 ⇒ 10 = Sorcerer

Gold:
3000 + 1d500 ⇒ 3000 + (85) = 3085

Quite an odd combination at first glance...but I'm kinda digging it, and this would make a kick@$$ Dragon Disciple or Eldritch Knight methinks.

Going to put together a rough draft of an alias, will tweak it at home when I have access to HeroLab.

Liberty's Edge

@ Voodoo - Are you looking just for mechanics/stats/gear, or do you want a backstory, personality, etc.?

Liberty's Edge

So yesterday a bunch of us ran through Fellnight Queen, and one of the players who was on slow progression leveled up after the adaptable was over.

But here's the thing - he had 23 xp, received 1.5 xp for the mod, leaving him technically at 24.5 xp. However, he wants to switch back to Fast Track at 9th level (24 xp).

So does he eat the .5 xp and just sits at 24 xp, or would he sit at 25, allowing the .5 to round up (since he is in the Fast Track and it "sorta" is equivalent to a full point of xp)?

I looked around some, but couldn't find any definitive answer...anyone have any type of official answer?

Liberty's Edge

@ Black Thom/Ludi - Thanks, I read through that 3 times trying to find it and kept overlooking that - it must have been the prolific usage of the word "gnoll" :)

@ Woodford/Ludi - Thanks, much clearer; I do recall seeing that 'back in the day', just don't think I've ever used it

And Ludi, thanks for further info on the backstory, sounds good.

Liberty's Edge

Ludi, this actually sounds pretty intriguing, and reading through some of your campaign's discussion posts, you sound like a good, hands-on (but flexible GM). I really like the idea of starting with one, adding someone else, adding another, etc. Very interesting.

In reading your guidelines and such, it sounds like you're cool with us applying for both positions, yes? And since we have a fixed theme, how much of a backstory are you looking for - just a quick summary of their life, or a "how I got to this spot specifically", or, "Hi, I'm Joe and this is my life story" montage??

Couple of specific questions:
  • What is the campaign trait for the Hunter?
  • Is the "Rich Parents" trait on the table if it makes sense?
  • I'm a little confused about multiclass BAB and saves...for instance, if I went Fighter 1/Cleric 1, what would my BAB and saves be?

Liberty's Edge

Going to withdraw as well...finding I don't have the time for more.

Thanks anyway and good luck!

Been doing that the whole time, have four characters - a 3, 6, 8 & 11 all in one 1.5" binder, everything in sleeves, with boons in the back pocket and reference material/notes in the front. Only my first character - who is also 11, but I rarely play him - is not in that binder; post-GenCon, the 11 that is in my binder currently will be starting retirement, so he'll probably graduate to a new binder too, making my main binder nice and light.

Makes looking characters, chronicles, etc. up really easy and I only have to carry one binder everywhere, so I never forget anything.

Oh, and for the Summoners out there...something that I do for mine is look up which ones I would want to use, print them out on index card-size cardstock, or just do Hero Lab-like stat blocks for them and print those out, fitting 4-8 on a page. I also use a full character sheet for my Eidolon. Again, makes looking them up and keeping track of things sooo much easier.

I'll post an idea or two for a character tomorrow, as I'm falling asleep at my keyboard - in the mean time, I'll throw my vote in for three traits.

That's not me trying to be greedy...honestly I wish it was more common to be allowed more, as I think they can add a little flavor or flair to a background.

For instance - one character I submitted to a different game was an orc who I had grow up as a slave in a neighboring orc tribe, and learned to fight and kill early on, blah blah blah -- so when I picked traits, I ended up going with Killer and Poverty Stricken, as they fit the character and were decent mechanically speaking...but I had to choose these two from a pot of about 6 or 7, so, yeah.

Anyway, that's my vote for three, with some reason why.

Wow, I'm totally digging this idea Mug - since we all pretty much have to have 'dayjobs' though, and since some classes get so few skill points, any chance you could houserule us a skill point or two, or one a level, something like that, that HAS to be put in a profession/craft/perform?

Just a thought...again, I'm not the kinda guy that gets all hurt by a 'no', but it can't hurt to ask, right?

I know a decent amount of Golarion since I play PFS, but I'd be good with anything for the most part - I'd prefer to stray from any heavy change; i.e. I'd like to stay in a relatively high-fantasy setting.

Looking at the ideas presented so far, I would be most interested in the following ideas:

  • The League of Evil Assassins
  • Classic fantasy sword and board high magic rescue
  • Friends - sounds like a fun way to begin things, kind of a neat modification on the "you all meet in a bar..."
  • Bounty Hunters of the Bad
  • Running Man/Battle Royale/Hunger Games idea of forcibly pitting a whole bunch of teams against nature and others for some ultimate goal
  • Big ol' dungeon crawl to find the Widget of Doom before Doctor Evil does, with puzzles and interactions within

Setting-wise:

  • Linnorm/Mammoth Lords areas are always fun
  • Irrisen could be fun
  • Worldwound always sounds interesting - demons and devils are always a blast and challenging
  • Sargava, Geb, Darklands, Sodden Lands

And if none of these get chosen...meh, I'm totally flexible...though the Pineapple Under the Sea idea doesn't do anything for me. ;)

Liberty's Edge

If I get in, I can't wait to see some of the craziness that could occur...

Liberty's Edge

1. I, Ricky Bobby, want to play in another pbp, please.
2. I (could) typically post 2-4 times a day; maybe less on weekends (I say could because I have just gotten back into pbp, but haven't played here yet...I used to all the time on dndonlinegames however, so I'm reliable) :)
3.I currently play in 0 games here, though have applied for one other (and again, used to play all the time, just not lately)
4. Some adventures I am interested in are: any AP, any homebrew that doesn't stray too far from typical PFRPG - like, I'm not looking for heavy sci-fi, western, no-magic, 8-pt buys, etc. - that said, I tend to enjoy fun homebrew rules or options thrown in though!
5. I tend to like beaters and skill-monkeys, but....
6. I'm totally for trying new classes/roles - leaving my 'comfort zone' is no problem
7. I'm a Pisces, enjoy soccer, golf and almost any type of board/card/video/RP game...and the obligatory walks on the beach.

Love this idea by the way - very different and interesting way to ask for interest. I've always liked the idea of answering odd questions for applicants - gives you an idea of their own personality!

*EDIT* - forgot to mention for #4 that though I would be happy to start with a level 1 build, I am one of those that just gets all giddy when a DM/GM starts a little later in, like 3 or 4.

Liberty's Edge

Interested, but a few questions here as well.

Are the Core Book and UC the only books allowed?
What type of campaign is this...heavy RP? Heavy Dice? Nice mix?

Thanks!
