"Ken" simply means knowledge or understanding.

Thus, as I said, "mortal" would be much better than "all", which implies (probably not intentionally) that even the gods don't know what happens to souls.

I liked the "soul slavers" idea presented, but it still begs the question of why then would devils appear on the material plane at all, if they can just run into Shadowherever and scoop them up by the score.

Just looking for some internal consistency which will probably be hammered out by the final product. Once again, presentation of information not the current strong suit of the wotcies.

I don't usually run or play at high levels, so the Wheel isn't something I deal with often. The arrangement of the planes according to alignment make sense if alignment is central to the characters and the game, and the dissolution of this setup makes sense if you're trying to downplay or eliminate alignments.

I think 3.xe placed a heavy emphasis on alignment on a grand scale, while still allowing you to play you character in shades of grey. I like the idea of good, evil, law, chaos, and balance ("nuetral") being actual forces vying for control over the multiverse. The alignment system is part of what distinguished D&D from other rpgs. Seemingly, the current batch of folks at wotc are the type of D&D players who hate the alignment system, and there are plenty of those. I'm just not one.

If all the dead "silently fade away beyond all ken" then why would the devils have such a great interest in souls? (The "new" defining characteristic of Devils.) Now, if the article had said "beyond mortal ken" this might have made more sense.

But beyond ALL ken? No point in devils, now is there?

Just for the record, this still leaves the answer at 5, 6, or 7 (the original also had these answers). 5 or 6 if Str 15, 6 or 7 if Str 14.

Ok, I messed that one up nicely. Guess I won't be writing any math riddles anytime soon.

Hey,
If there's a way to arrange it, I'd like them to have a dozen Player's Guides on me. I could either ship you the money through Paypal, or if one of these whizzes at Paizo can charge my account and ship them to you... whatever. I remember the game club I was in during jr high and wished I could have formed one in my high school (unfortunately, being a Catholic High School in the mid 80s didn't exactly encourage.) Anyway, I'd be glad to donate to help your school be the Official Paizo Pathfinder Headquarters.

PS, X could equal either 5 or 6.

Now, a better one would be:

Valeros the fighter has a base attack bonus of +5. His Strength bonus is +2 and he is under the effects of a bard's inspire courage effect, giving him another +1 to hit.

If Karzoug hits Valeros with a ray of enfeeblement that reduces his Strength by X, Valeros must roll a natural 7+X or higher to hit Karzoug's 18 AC. Solve for X.

Which would only have one solution instead of two, and works even if his Strength is 15.

Hi, since it seems to have gone unnoticed in the batch of "I got it"s in the other thread, I'd like to re-post

RoTRL #1 was shipped on Aug 20th. I have not received it yet. Please address this situation.

Thanks

Begrudgingly C. So far, not too impressed with either the information or the way it's being doled out to us. Thank the gods who haven't been killed yet for EN World. Finding information on the WOTC site is like having to choose the blue pill every day ("You have to be signed up for the DI to gain access to that information, Citizen." Ughh.)

You're on your 12th business day. Though it was estimated at 3–10 days by the postal service, we'd like to give it a total of 18 business days, so that would take us to 9/17 for copies shipped on the 20th.

Ok, it's 9/18. I still haven't got it. I've seen it at my FLGS. But I don't have my copy yet. I've started the campaign and I'm pretty much at a spot where trying to run it from my laptop is a big pain. Yes, I'm one of those who has to have it in print.

So, what's the solution, my friends?

You could also sneak over to the obituary posts and steal names and background from there. Although, come to think of it what horrid alternate universe would it be if your characters got brought back as someone else's NPCs..... Well, it's a thought.

The next generation of D&D gamers will come from the current generation of D&D players. Some, literally. My two daughters and the boy across the street play D&D 3.5 because that is what I run. When they get older and have disposable income of their own, I would bet hard cash that at least two of them will be playing D&D, although I won't hold to what edition they'll be playing.

D&D will not die.

D&D will not die. It may no longer be a Big Company game. Our numbers may wane. But as long as people like me, and people like the teachers that have posted here, have passion for the game, and introduce that passion to succeeding generations, D&D will never die.

The roleplaying experience is not one that can be conveyed any other way than to sit someone down and play with them.

All of the above purely my opinion, but it is an honest and earnest opinion.

Andoran (Pathfinder Adventure Path Charter Subscriber; Roleplaying Game, Campaign Setting, Companion, Modules Subscriber)

just some quick notes:

Can't wait to see what evil Foxglove gets up to in the next instalment... now my job is to make the players all but forget about him, expecting him to be a romantic subplot.... I love that I was able to tie him to Kiel as well as Chi Chi, should be interesting to see how that plays out

The kids playing are 13-14 years old. Jen has been playing since she could pick up dice practically (started just before 3rd ed came out)
Tona and Corey about 2 years.

Comments always welcome

Zakok, proud warrior of the Wind Clan, has begun his Shintogon, or walk of manhood. Having proved himself on the battlefield and in the hunts, he has been instructed by his father to travel the lands of Varisia to find his destined path. He has arrived at the small town of Sandpoint in time for the Swallowtail Festival, having been lured by tales of the wonders of Ameiko Kaijitsu’s famous curry-spiced salmon.

Chi Chi Maru, forsaken child orphaned to the brutal streets and canals of Riddleport, has come to Sandpoint seeking clues to the riddle that is her family, trying to establish a new identity and new life for herself. Somewhat wary of strangers and tired of dealing with prejudice, she arrives cloaked and hooded, seeing the town in the middle of preparations for a festival, she decides to use the event as a means of milling about the town looking for others who share her mixed heritage.

Kiel S. Elrick, servant and entertainer of Lord Aldern Foxglove, has seen better days. While Master Foxglove is still wealthy by a commoner’s standards, his estate has suffered since his parent’s demise years ago. Kiel, as a Gnome has seen Aldern grow into the man he is today, and has kept him entertained since he was a lad. Recently, however, the Foxglove estate has been dwindling, and Kiel has had to take on additional responsibilities as other servants have been let go. Thus, he is heartened by his Master’s decision to vacation in the Hinterlands north of Magnimar, and the cultural diversity of Sandpoint is the ideal backdrop for some time off. And, while Master Foxglove intends to bring Kiel along during his hunting expeditions, he has given him leave to spend the rest of the vacation as he sees fit.

Salawick “Sally” Boommostle, Druid of the Brandywine Burrow Clan of Gnomes, has traveled to Sandpoint to partake in the dedication of the Temple seeing it as an opportunity to further serve Desna. She rides in on Morganstern, a fierce and loyal companion and mount. Morganstern is immediately impressed with the fine choice of b!!*%es around town, and decides there might be something worthwhile to this town thing after all.

After enjoying many of the festivities, the soon-to-be-foursome is as surprised as the rest of the town when the goblins attack. Zakok is the first to react, charging towards the goblin who has so viciously killed a nearby dog. Next, Sally rides Morganstern towards another nearby goblin and Chi Chi follows her. Kiel, seeing these brave souls come to the rescue of the townsfolk, starts to chant encouraging words in their direction.

The goblins, seeing the menacing “longshanks” and their hated Dog and Gnome companions, decide to show their superiority by striking. And their goblinity by missing on all counts. Sure, Gutbog would have gutted that stupid dog if the Gnome hadn’t deflected the blow, but that didn’t help Hudlod when the big, dark-skinned longshank split him in half with that huge axe. Gutbog could tell he struck a nerve with the disgusting Gnome lady and her pitiful excuse for a mutt, and he danced a jig around their snarling jaws and poking spear. Unfortunately for him, the other longshank cut him wide open with her blade. This left Gasblote next to the big, ugly, muscled, axe-wielding maniac.

Still, there were tons of goblins, all five clans even, and these longshanks would cower like the rest once they felt the sting of Gasblote’s dogslicer. Oops. The last thing Gasblote saw was his blade missing the big thug. Then, the thirsty axe drank once more on Goblin blood.

Looking at one another, and seeing the carnage and chaos around them as goblins took lives, ate fish, got stuck in a barrel, jumped in and out of every hidey hole and alley around them, and the relative ineffectuality of the town guard, they moved as a team towards a group of goblins who were having far too much fun with fire and a flammable wagon. In truth, they made just as short work of these goblins as the last, although one did manage to get a hit on Zakok. Kiel continued to lend support to the group, changing his tune to both match and mock the goblins’ war songs.

Then they noticed Lord Aldern Foxglove’s predicament. His loyal dog was being torn apart by a nasty looking goblin on a goblin dog, and it looked for all the world like he might be next, especially with the other goblins in the area finding their spines when the dog died. As was the trend, the swift Zakok was the fleetest of foot, arriving in time to put an the goblin ranger’s threat, with Sally and Chi Chi close behind engaging the other goblins. Unfortunately for Zakok, the goblin dog was eager to avenge his master and got a solid bite on him. Zakok returned the favor, but had to fall back and allow the others to finish off the goblins.

Lord Foxglove was extremely grateful, and immediately took a shining to the lovely, talented, and mysterious Chi Chi. He offered to give the group a proper reward and requested that Kiel show them to the room he was staying in at the Rusty Dragon in a couple of days, hoping to get them involved in the hunt he had planned.

Father Zantus, the local priest in charge of the new temple, offered to do what he could with the group’s wounds, healing Chi Chi completely and sealing most of Zakok’s wounds. He then continued doing what he could for the other survivors.

Over the next few days, the group, kept together by Kiel’s charming personality and a newfound celebrity status, found themselves to be the darlings of the town. Exploring the town’s streets and shops, the group was greeted by friendly faces and smiles. It seemed as if every young and available lass in town had an eye for Zakok, staring, blushing, whispering, and giggling following the group around town. Letters of adoration greeted the illiterate Shaonti, smelling pleasantly of perfumes, some bearing tokens (flowers, hair clippings), when he returned to the Inn for the evening. Flattered, he hired Kiel to read the letters to him, and eventually, teach him to read them for himself.

The group met with Aldern Foxglove as arranged, and Zakok, Chi Chi, and Sally were rewarded with 50 pieces of gold each for their efforts in saving his life. Kiel was rewarded with words of thanks for encouraging the group. This dismissal of his efforts began an internal struggle in the young Gnome… could he continue to serve a Master who had no respect for his abilities? Perhaps he could impress his master with what he had learned about the adventurers.

Lord Foxglove invited the adventurers to hunt the wild boar with him, and they accepted. He quickly arranged to buy mounts for those who had none. On the trip out to the Tickwood, Aldern plied the adventurers for stories of where they came from, taking the time to heap praise on Chi Chi for her bravery and skill, and growing annoyed at Kiel when the young Gnome tried to explain that he could inform him of these details after spending the last few days with these new friends. It seemed His Lordship wanted to personally get to know the half-elf.

Once they spotted the boar, Lord Aldern Foxglove proved himself very capable with a bow and crippled the boar with a well-placed arrow. Zakok, in typical fashion, ran the boar down and finished it with his axe. Lord Foxglove was well pleased with the hunt, and heaped praise upon Chi Chi for inspiring his aim to be as true as her beauty, despite her not having a blessed thing to do with the boar’s demise. Kiel began to get even more annoyed with his master’s antics.

Once they returned to the Rusty Dragon, Ameiko created a fabulous feast centered around the boar meat. Everyone at the Inn enjoyed the fine repast. As the feast was wrapping up, Aldern instructed Kiel to regale the Innfolk with the tale of the hunt, telling him to play up the inspiration provided by Chi Chi and the perfect aim of his arrow that followed, and downplay the barbarian’s chase as merely finishing off a wounded and practically helpless beast. It seemed vacation was over for Kiel after all.

But, just as he was to start, Amele, Aeren, and baby Verah Barett burst into the Rusty Dragon with dire news… One of the goblins from the raid days before had hidden in young Aeren’s bedchamber closet and had finally attacked and killed the family dog Petal out of desperation. Aeren himself had been attacked as well, the fresh bite marks on his arm showed as proof. Alergast Barett had stayed behind as his wife and children fled, keeping the goblin from chasing them.

The party rushed to the Barett house, finding carnage in the little boy’s room. Seeing the father laying face down half in, half out of the closet, they entered the small room. Zakok quickly spotted Gresgurt hiding under the body, mouth bloody, chewing noisily, and enraged, charged up.
Gresgurt slashed at the rage-filled longshank, cutting his arm gleefully. Zakok responded with a quick and final blow of the axe. As the party searched the goblin and examined the chewed face of poor mister Barett, Amele saw her husband, screamed, and fainted. Chi Chi offered her what comfort she could until Sheriff Hemlock arrived.

The Sheriff arranged for the surviving Baretts to be taken care of at the temple, while requesting that the new town heroes come and visit him in two days, as he received a message saying that a local goblin expert named Shalelu Andosana would be returning to town, which was quite unusual, and he wanted them there so they would all be able to decide where to go from there. The party agreed.

About this time was when Kiel decided for certain to leave his Master’s employ. Among these folk, he was a hero equal to them, not a mere servant to be used or ignored. After the people at the Rusty Dragon were told the unfortunate tale of the Baretts, several of the local girls surrounded Zakok to “tend to his wounds” while Ameiko diverted the patrons with more lighthearted tales from the raid a few days passed, attempting to lighten the mood, and Kiel asked his Master for a private word.

Lord Foxglove did not take the news well. At first insulted, then aggressively posturing and warning the young Gnome that he had laid soul claim to Chi Chi’s affections, and that his former servant had better not interfere, told Kiel that his services were no longer desired in any case. Kiel, who had known this man from his early days, sensed his master’s jealousy and attributed it to the fact that while his master also longed for adventure, he hadn’t the heart for it. The hunt, where the animals had little chance against the bow was more his forte. When faced with a foe with armor and weapons, like the goblins a few days earlier, his master was unable to summon the courage. Perhaps he could convince the others to allow Aldern to join the group.

Meanwhile, one of the girls tending to Zakok leaned in closer to whisper a request in his ear. Her father, distracted by an affair her sister was having, hadn’t been properly attending his shop. She claimed that she had seen rats in the basement, and that one of them was at least as big as the goblins. Could he come with her to dispatch these rats? Zakok graciously accepted the challenge, offering to gather his friends and deal with the problem at once. Shayliss, however, balked at this offer, saying that surely a powerful and brave warrior such as he had no need of additional support to take out a few rats. Zakok, however, insisted that he could not consider himself an honorable man if he didn’t give his newfound compatriots a chance to join in the task. Shayliss, her efforts to get Zakok alone frustrated, threw up her arms in despair and declared that she would handle the problem another way.

Chi Chi, having witnessed the louder parts of the discussion, informed Zakok that, based on the information she had gathered in her research in town over the last few days, he had made a wise decision. It seems that Shayliss Vinder had something of a reputation as a temptress in town, and that her “basement rats” had slain many a young man’s virtue. Her father was none the wiser, distracted as he was by his other daughter’s affair. Chi Chi spared Zakok the details, however, just telling him the choice not to go with Shayliss was the right one.

Zakok was doubly grateful for the distraction of Kiel’s interruption, requesting the foursome to get together to discuss something. As he was gathering the group, Kiel noticed Lord Foxglove gathering his menservants to retire for the evening. He asked Chi Chi to delay Aldern until he could make his request to the group. Aldern informed Chi Chi that he had no intention of speaking to his former servant tonight, but that if she would like to pass a message from him, she was welcome to join him in his chambers after the group’s discussion. Blushing, she admitted she might just accept that invitation.

Kiel submitted his proposal to the group; they could allow Lord Aldern Foxglove to come along with them on their adventures, helping him to show his former master that he could be a useful, equal member of the venture. His master’s skill with the bow in the hunt was impressive, Kiel pointed out. The group agreed, and so Chi Chi and Kiel approached Lord Foxglove’s room, only to find Charle, Foxglove’s manservant, attending the door. The invitation, he informed Kiel with a stern look, was for Chi Chi alone. With a quick and quiet warning that she wasn’t the first young lady Aldern had courted, Kiel returned to the stairs.

Chi Chi was shown into the room, where Destin, Lord Foxglove’s elderly attendant, took her cloak and hung it before being dismissed by a smiling, wine-toting Aldern. Accepting the wine with a smile, Chi Chi graciously thanked Lord Foxglove. He offered her a seat on the bed next to him, his attention making the young half-elf nervous. This man was handsome, had shown wealth, grace, and skill with a bow, and was very obvious and forward with his intentions towards her. She wasn’t sure what these feelings were she was developing towards him, but they were not entirely unwelcome.

She laid out Kiel’s proposal; would the young noble be interested in joining the group on their adventures? Lord Foxglove’s eyes lit with passion. He spoke of his desire to travel with her, get to know her, prove his valor and strength…. But, he had duties that needed attending in Magnimar. After those duties, however, he would return as quickly as he could to Sandpoint, for he desired nothing more than to see her again. Or, perhaps she would join him in Magnimar if her adventures took her that way? His intentions were in earnest, and he showed this with a sudden, passionate kiss. Chi Chi felt the warmth of that kiss as she bid her goodbye.

The next day, soon after Lord Foxglove’s departure, she received a curious token of his affections…. The boar’s head, stuffed and mounted, with a plaque inscribed “To My Inspiration”. Zakok could be heard mumbling something about how he should have been awarded the head, having been the only one who helped to kill the beast. But at least it was good natured mumbling. Chi Chi decided to visit the local florist and insure that Lord Foxglove had a more traditional gift awaiting him upon his return.

Sally, who had been good-naturedly ribbing Chi Chi about how skinny she was compared to the full-figured voluptuousness that Gnomish women sported , and had secretly been paying the local baker to give her sweetbreads whenever she passed, telling her to “Eat, eat! You’re too skinny.” , asked Kiel why all this attention was being paid to Chi Chi and he hadn’t even told Sally how pretty she was yet. Kiel, embarrassed at the oversite, followed Chi Chi to the florist and arranged for some roses to be delivered to her room.

to be continued (need more time :) )

Meanwhile, one of the girls tending to Zakok,

To be completed when I’m less tired :)

You all know you'd be holding Pathfinder now if they didn't have to run to the computer every 5 minutes to answer the "Where's my Pathfinder?!?" whines, right?

You know, that really ticks me off. "Whine"! Who the #$#$ is whining here? I get so sick of posters who call legitimate customer service complaints "whining". These people have a right to express their concerns. Paizo staff members are addressing their concerns in a professional and courteous manner. Then some trolling poster comes along to call the concerned customers whiners.

Happens all the time on other boards. I'd rather not see it here. I'd rather support our overseas brothers and sisters during the launch of an important product in Paizo's life. Your post does absolutely nothing but increase ill will towards Paizo's community.
I appreciate that Paizo is trying to improve its' overseas customers' experience with Pathfinder 2 and hope that you guys continue to demonstrate understanding and patience with what I'm sure is a frustrating experience.

My players for the new pathfinder game (my 2 daughters and the boy acrossed the street) are playing:

M Human (Shoanti) Barbarian
F Elf Rogue
M Halfling Bard ([former?] Jester to a nearby local Royal House, Str 3 should be fun)

and I have an NPC F Gnome Druid (but I'm hoping my wife picks up this NPC as my 4th player...)

I've just finished painting the minis and I think they came out wonderfully.

I'm thinking of doing a game (b)log with pictures of the game in progress attached... any suggestions for the best forum for such a thing?

I won't be playing 4th Ed for at least 3 years(maybe never- I might wait for 5th to come out.) If Pathfinder goes 4th, I will probably be discontinuing my month-to-month. This is due to the somewhere nearly 50 3.5 ed books and several thousand version 1 D&D minis I now have. I enjoy 3.5 and will be playing it for at least that long, longer if it continues to get support from parties other than WOTC.
In a way, I'm greatful to WOTC for announcing the 4th Edition & DDM 2.0, because it means I no longer feel any urge whatsoever to buy anything more from them. I will continue to buy from Paizo as long as they support 3.5.

That being said, I would completely understand any decision Paizo made to switch to the new game in town, based on the need to follow the market. I just won't be part of that particular market. I would love it if Paizo could find a way to continue to support the market I belong to, steadfast 3.5 players/dms.

"We boggins are hairy folk
We love to eat until we choke
Loving all like friend and brother
We hardly ever eat each other..."*
Oh, wait this is for Goblin songs, not Boggin songs.
Hmmmmnnnn...

This is why kobolds must NEVER mate with Gnomes. ;)

Any chance one of your miniature partners will come out with minis of the icon characters? That would make my day. Might even pull me out of the funk the cancellations have put me in.

Who: Armond Albert, male Human Fighter7
Opal, female Human Sorcerer 7
Ivareel Nightdew, male Elf Rogue 7
Glanodel , female Elf Favored Soul of Kord 7
Todd Alderyce, human Commoner 1/Expert 1/ Fighter 3 (NPC)
Where: Sodden Hold, Invisible Stalker Room

Ivareel entered the room first, carefully walking the planks when a "sudden gust of wind" knocked him into the watery spikes. Swimming to the shore where the other door hides around the corner (and taking more damage in the process), he gets hit again and realizes- hey, that wasn't a trap, it was and attack.
Time to roll for init. Meanwhile, seeing that Ivareel is falling into unconsciousness, Armond makes an amazing 15' running jump to the planks near Ivareel and manages to avoid slipping off. Then, the other I.S. slams Armond into the water. Todd moves out onto the planks to help Armond and Ivareel, only to take an attack of opportunity and fall into the water in his full plate mail. Glanodel casts Mass Aid, keeping Ivareel from falling into unconsciousness and bolstering the wounded Armond and Todd. Opal moves forward and uses her recently purchased scroll of see invisibility and sees the I.S.'s, letting the others know roughly where they are.
Armond helps Ivareel crawl onto shore, and Todd holds his breath while he sinks. I.S. #1 slams Ivareel back into unconsciousness. I.S.#2 attacks Armond, putting som hurt on him. Glanodel moves onto the planks cautiously. Opal casts thunderhead on #1, allowing Armond to know where it is.
Armond attempts to hit #1 with a tanglefoot bag, missing badly. Todd continues to hold his breath at the bottom of the water. IS #1 slams Armond twice, almost knocking him out. IS#2 knocks Glanodel off the beams and into the water, then moves towards Opal. Glanodel tries to swim but can't. Opal casts an orb of electricity at #2, hurting it somewhat.
Armond drops below the water and uses a charge on the ring of spell storing to cast Faith Healing on himself. Todd still holds his breath. IS#1 seeing most of its enemies below water, decides to finish off Ivareel, revealing him to actually be a doppleganger. IS#2 slams into Opal something fierce. Glanodel makes it to shore. Opal casts another orb.
Armond uses another charge on the ring to do cure light wounds on himself. IS#1 stays still, realizing it has just killed one of its masters. #2 slams into Opal, knocking her unconscious. Glanodel fires off a Close Wounds spell (Instant/Reaction) to keep Opal alive, and then on her turn moves forward to cast cure light wounds, but ends up moving through 2 spaces where IS#2 threatens and takes 2 AoOs. Trying to cast defensively, she rolls a 1 and loses the spell.
Armond comes up and manages 2 hits on IS#1, dropping it. Todd manages to swim to shore. #2 drops Glanodel with 2 slams.
Todd and Armond begin making their way back through the planks, but #2 moves over to block them.
Todd takes and AoO when he tries to move and then 2 slams on IS#2's turn. Armond takes an AoO but manages to stay on the beams and get across. IS#2 then takes advantage of its 10' reach to keep Armond from knowing where it is striking from and finishes him off.

The real Ivareel suffers horribly before dying.

The end???

The players really like their characters, so I'm thinking of flinging them into a few decades into the future, when right smack dab into the age of worms, putting them through a few horrors (enough to get them to the right level even after having been ressurected) and then having a dying Eligos send them back to fix the past, just in time for the champion games. In order to save the world from the horrors of the age of worms.

Make sure to run a few extra encounters during the many travel times in the early adventures. Be prepared for the effectiveness of entangle. Give the Druid a link to one of the other characters, a reason to join the team's adventures. Then, once things start going, play up the unnatural threats presented by the Ebon Triad and the Spawn of Kyuss (the worm-filled egg ought to send shivers down the spine of any Druid, particularly if it starts infesting the Lizard Folk babies.) Be prepared for the Druid to be reluctant to spend much time underground until you can give him reason to go...
