The thrush can only raise skill ranks by its masters spending. so if the master puts 10 ranks into perception, the thrush has 10 ranks in perception also and thus should get the improved bonus for skill focus at that point.

As Talynonyx pointed out, that is wrong. Spells and Spell-like abilities are specific game terms. They do not apply to supernatural abilities.

Compare the wording of those abilities to the elves immunities. Elves are immune to all sleep effects, so that is immunity to any type of sleep power whether it is spell, spell-like, supernatural, or extraordinary. The paladins immunities don't say "effect", they say "spell or spell-like ability".

So if you had 1 Human Level 10 fighter (APL 10), encounter 1 Human Level 10 fighter (CR9), this would be considered an easy encounter?

No, it means that if you had a party of 4 level 10 characters encounter 1 level 10 fighter (CR 9) it would be an easy encounter.

one thing I WOULD like to see, is when making new weapons they keep Weapon finese in mind!! The fact that 'Sword cane' doesn't have a line of text saying either 'This weapon works with Finesse' or 'This weapon shares a proficiency with Rapier' is truly inexcusable.

Umm... they do keep that in mind, they define the weapon as "Light" when it's finesse-able. Alternately they have entries like the Sawtooth Saber "If you have exotic weapon proficiency (Sawtooth Saber) treat this as a light melee weapon"... in other words... It's finesse-able.

If a weapon *isn't* a light melee weapon then the developers don't intend for it to be used with Weapon Finesse. That is one of the biggest reasons some weapons are listed as light melee and others are one handed.

i believe he was stating that he felt(and on this one i agree with him) that the sword cane could/should? have been finesse-able or a light weapon. nine times out of ten whenever i see one, it's used in a style of...fencing.

I've been doing some thinking on this over the past week. I think i'm doing to do a small overhaul of the city building process, and break the structures available into tiers. The larger/more expansive building like arena/cathedral/magical-acadamy will have to wait until the city is large enough (level, rank, whatever term i settle on) to support it. A bit more Civ-esque i suppose. but my group players like that kinda game anyways. I like the "blank numbers" sheet with only + - symbols, i think i may do that one as well. If i did 5 "tiers" to a city, i'd allow the players to see the options for their current tier and the one just above.

I kind of wish it did, used to have a ray wizard with split ray and improved crit: Ray. Would have been nice for the extra damage.

Well, in 3.5 it did work. In PF ray of enfeeblement bestows a penalty, not stat damage so sneak attack won't work in that specific case anymore.

harmor wrote:

How do you deal with Paladins when you're a caster wanting to cast spells with the [Evil] discriptor?

Could you convince them, for example, that you can create Zombies/Skeletons of creatures without souls?

Fact: Skeletons and zombies are mindless.

Fact: Negative energy is not evil.
Fact: Animate dead does not affect souls. It does not rip souls from heaven or hell to animate the dead.
Fact: You can use flesh to stone on a statue, resulting in a Corpse. You can then cast animate dead on that corpse, making an undead that was once stone.
Fact: Animate Dead has the Evil descriptor.

The Paladin code bars her from working with evil associates for long, or someone who constantly is offending her code. If the caster is Good (in the case of wizards or sorcerers, who have no restrictions on casting the spell), or Neutral (such as gray clerics), the Paladin may find it offensive, but perhaps tolerable.

Honestly, if the Paladin makes a fuss about it, you may not be able to convince them if they refuse to listen. However, it's absolutely impossible to argue that undead are innately evil without resorting to "well just because they are", which in a real situation has no weight.

Honestly, I'd let the Paladin and the rest of the group know that it's the Paladin being unreasonable. The Paladin has no right to say what the rest of the party does. Request, sure, but if the Necromancer in the party pops some undead zombies up, and the Paladin complains, he's free to leave. It's not you that is causing the problem, but the Paladin and his rigidness. The Paladin is the one who is creating the problem (notice the Necromancer likely doesn't have a class feature telling him he can't be friends with the Paladin), so either he can get over it, or he can get lost.

It's as simple as that.

Skeletons and Zombies are by default malevolent and evil. It was 3.x where they were mindless/neutral. Also, if someone was to walk up and tell me to "get over it or get lost" , i and my group would ask them to do the walking. Hostile Confrontationalism doesn't help anyone.

Summons are 1/rnd per level vs. indefinitely controlled undead limited by your HD.

I'm aware of the difference. it doesn't mean it's not an option however. In addition, the binding spells are not 1 rounders.

Without some kind of DM intervetion/houserule, paladins and undead users in teh same group are typically a no-go. You and the other player shoudl have a chat, and hash out your character ideas. One of you may have to change concept for this game, but i would suggest that whoever does, support the other player's concept in the next one.

You may run into that with bleach then. It has a ginormous cast of characters that keeps growing, and the main characters power levels are very swingy. Some fans like the one and hate the other, some like both, etc. I personally hate the mandatory episodes set aside for bad guy backstory. ok, so these 5 guys show up. 1st episode hero A and villan X clash. Its a decent fight. Next episode, flashback exposition on villain X, next episode, conclusion of fight. Hero B and villain Y in episode 4, decent fight, episode 5, flashback exposition backstory of Villain Y, etc.

My friend said it best. He lives for the Kenpachi battles. "Enough with your words. NO MORE TALK! RAAAAH!"

Bleach is similar to Naruto in that it's several hundred episodes, swingy on power levels and continuity, and has seasons of filler arcs. if you liked one you will probably enjoy the other. Sacred Blacksmith i enjoyed, i liked the concept of the transforming/sentient weapons. A few minor plot quibbles but overall a nice watch. No regrets on it. Spice and Wolf i found to be solidly entertaining, not super extreme in any of its genres included.

Seriously, if you have access to 9th level spells, immortality shouldn't be a problem for you. You can become a lich at level 10 or 13, or you can create your own spell that basically grants you an ageless, immortal body.

The only reason, or one of the only reasons, someone becomes a lich and goes through all that hard work and suffering, is because they aren't powerful enough to create/cast a 9th level spell. They wing it and fail, and lichdom is a result of the failure.

In other words, they know they won't make it to 9th level spells, so the try to Mcgyver it and lich is the best they've come up with.

And evil/good people may have...difficulties coming back for a reincarnation, as a)heaven is generally agreed upon to be awesome, and b)hell really doesn't like losing souls. And then there's Pharasma. Good luck.

Although that would be really fun. Have the character die of old age, have the Grim Reaper hold conversations with them ala Terry Pratchett's Discworld series, and then bring them back again with the Reaper saying "SEE YOU LATER."

Each of those games excels at different things. I wouldn't play D&D if I want a wacky anime style game, I'd play BESM. I wouldn't play Dogs in the Vineyard if I want a high flying fantasy adventure game, I'd play D&D 3e or 4e. If I want to mow down zombies by the hundreds, I wouldn't play AFMBE, but I want to run away screaming from zombies and desperately try to not die, I would. How gritty do I want my fantasy game? That makes the difference between D&D and GURPS and RuneQuest and Warhammer (vaguely in that order from least grit to vague grit to quite gritty to Sam Raimi Black Humor Everyone is Dying)

As a fellow player of many different game systems i can only say +1 to this here, the first sentence especially.

My first question was very poorly worded.

Rewording: How many rounds at the start of combat should a player use to cast short duration self-buffs?

I've heard from the boards that a typical adventuring day should be 4 encounters of about 4-5 rounds on average. If it takes 4 rounds for the Battle Cleric to buff himself to be useful, he's no longer useful. The rest of the party can take out the BBEG before the cleric is ready. A good scout could allow the party several rounds before the initiative roll to prep buffs, but those aren't the encounters I'm referring to.

General advice is not to buff in combat. Every round you buff is a round you're not contributing to battle. That's why you buff just prior to combat whenever possible, so your first round will consist of moving into position and/or attacking the enemy.

However, if your buff is on other party member(s) then you are contributing in that round and later also. Bardsongs, Haste, Mass whatever. Self buffing however, i'd basically try to stop with 1 round.

Alternately, same situation, but BandaidTimmy rolls minimum on his dice (5d8+10) totaling 15. -35 +15 is -20, which is still unfortunately enough damage for RagingBob to still be dead. Sorry RagingBob.
