Can't let Ragnarr linger in PC limbo without some closure!
Frustrated with his inability to find tracks, despite his best efforts, the man-beast turns to his companions and the sailors. "You know what? Bolli, you can take your stinking job and shove it... I never liked your stupid ship anyway... and I don't owe anyone anything... see ya!"
And without even bidding a proper farewell to the companions he thought more fondly of, Ragnarr begins the long hike back through the wilderness to Raudurfoss... where, against all odds, he will settle down with Ragnhild, the love of his dreams. Together they will raise a brood of quarter-man-beasts, and live happily ever after... at least, until Ragnarok...
There, I feel better now... :-)
Taking Dorvarr and Kveldulf's lead, Ragnarr also begins to search the area near the eves of the wood for tracks left by the Franks...
Survival/Aid Another: 11 + 6 = 17.
"Utgaror... know you how we might reach this Grove of the Old Ones, and what we might find once we reach it?"
Ragnarr raises his flagon as Kveldulf chants his ode. "A fine song," he grunts in appreciation...
A fine song indeed!
"So... how does one find this... Grove of the Old Ones??? If the forest is wide and deep here, it might be much like searching for a needle in a hay stack..."
"Agreed, I prefer the woods to the river," grunts the man-beast. "But will this put us in debt to Bolli, if we do not finish the sailing with him?"
Ragnarr pockets the coins, not thinking to offer to divide the loot with his companions, and throws the corpse back in the river. "Let the brigand drift downstream and feed the sea monsters, if they will have him..."
Ragnarr drags the corpse back to shore and searches it.
"Oops... maybe I struck him too hard," mumbles the man-beast meekly, as he places a hand on the dead man's ankle, momentarily preventing him from floating downstream. "I guess that kill first, ask questions later, doesn't work... sorry... Now what?"
Ottarr Boddason wrote: Ragnarr the Fatherless wrote: No Ragnarr? :-( Aren't the rest of us sitting back near the barn, sleeping off their wounds/overcoming the massive amounts of poison in their veins? I made all my saves, just got cut up pretty badly. Figured I would use my reserve points to get back in action, and previously posted that I would follow Vlad and Dorvarr... if Wyrd finds that reasonable...
No Ragnarr? :-(
Ragnarr looks little better than Kveldulf. The man-beast's breath is still laboured, and he seems completely drained. He looks at Vlad and Dorvarr turning in search of the youth's parents, to the youths themselves, to Ottarr and Utgaror, and finally back at the knight and servant of Thor. He inhales deeply, grabs his axe, then follows his closest companions towards the homestead at a plodding pace. "Utgaror, thank you for... aiding me," he grunts hesitantly over his shoulder. "Will you... look over the young ones?"
As the worst of Ragnarr's cuts scab over under Dorvarr's divine ministrations, the man-beast grunts his gratitude to the cleric. Though now apparently back in full form, barbarian's arms, hands, and face retain feint traces of burn marks.
He sits up and looks with curiosity at the youths he and his companions have rescued, yet leaves communication with them to the others.
Ragnarr, blackened, burned, and bloodied, closes his eyes as he lays motionless on the ground a few feet beyond the blazing ruins...
Ragnarr is back down to exactly 0 hit points! Guess it'll be time to make use of my reserve points!

Cure Light wounds 8+3=11
[ooc]Thanks for the cure, DM. Is that 2 fire damage to be applied to Ragnarr after having been healed of 11 points of damage, or was that intended for Utgaror? If for Ragnarr, is the 2 before or after the save, and if before... what is the save DC? My apologies if I'm a little confused.
If the 2 damage applies to Utgaror only, or if the damage is post-save damage to Ragnarr, then either way, the following will happen on Ragnarr's turn...
As Utgaror channels energy into Ragnarr, the man-beast's eyes flutter open, but just barely. His breath is shallow and laboured, and with great difficulty, he grabs his axe and pushes himself up from the ground. He grunts his gratitude to the druid, then begins to hobble out after Vlad and the others...
Blood pumps steadily out of the numerous gashes that mar Ragnarr's body. The blood loss, the intensity of the flames, and sheer exhaustion causes the man-beast to falter. He drops to his knees, then face down on the hay-strewn earth, amid the burning debris, his great axe falling from his hand and making a dull ring as it too hits the ground.
Spoiler for DM:

Meanwhile by Ragnarr, Vladimir and the two beleaguered youth the barn groans as the far wall sags down dangerously and parts of it sloughing off in the flames cast more flaming debris. The young knight valiantly shields the children from harm though he is blasted by the scorching heat. The barbarian fares better but it is apparent that in a few more seconds the far wall will collapse inward engulfing all in a fiery end.
From falling debris: Ref sv DC 14 for 1/2 2d6 fire damage. Vladimir you take a -4 to your Ref save to protect the children.
Also moving thru the flames on the ground to rejoin the other three requires a Jump/Tumble check or 1d6 fire. .
Ref saves: Ragnarr 18, Vlad 8 fire dam 9
Needing to double check. Does Ragnarr still take damage, even with a successful save? If so, how much? The 9 fire damage seems to have been directed at Vlad...
Wyrd_Wiklund wrote: Ragnarr the Fatherless wrote: Did Ragnarr splinter the barricade? I thought you were posting out of turn. Your action this rnd would've been the attack you posted on Fri. Things got a little muddled I think w Vlad. I'll wait for his post until tomorrow
Oops, sorry... you're right...
Did Ragnarr splinter the barricade?
The last onslaught of the ettercap facing Ragnarr, and the burning debris have both taken a heavy toll on the man-beast and left him bloodied. He is barely able to stand, and seems on the verge of passing out. He growls at the men behind the barricade: "Move back and be freed, else be dead..."
He swings at the barricade with all his might (even though the humans hiding behind it can probably let themselves out quite easily... but what can I say, he is a bloodied, enraged man-beast)
Damage: 9 + 6 = 15.
Ragnarr continues to swing his axe frantically at the abomination that stands before him. Yet a chunk of burning debris falls from the ceiling, throwing him off balance as he just manages to dodge it. The man-beast's clumsy swing slices high in the air, above the creature's head. He curses, disgusted with himself, then mutters: "May Thor's eyes be blind to this poor showing..."
Attack: 1 + 8 = 9; crit. fumble confirmation: 7 + 8 = 15... I don't think that's a critical fumble, is it?
Posting out of sequence to keep things moving...
Ragnarr roars again and charges with axe held high at the abomination that stands before him, in front of the barricade.
Attack: 6 + 8 + 2 (charge) + 1 (bless?) = 17; damage: 11 + 6 = 17.
Failed the latest spot check.
Free from the web and ignoring the hazards of the flaming structure, the enraged man-beast takes a few more steps towards the spider-being that is trying to tear apart the barricade behind which hide the humans. He stops when he is within 10' of the creature, then roars at it at the top of his lungs. "You're even uglier than me!!! Come here and meet my axe, demon!"
Knowledge (nature): 10 + 2 = 12... but in his rage, sharing knowledge won't come to Ragnarr's mind.
EDIT: The man-beast swings his axe frantically, desperate to cut himself free of his unexepcted, silky bonds.
Yes, Ragnarr will use his last roll to cut through the webbing. How far into the barn has he advanced? And how many rounds have passed since he started his rage (or are you fine with the rage lasting the duration of the encounter, as you were with Dorvarr's bless spell?)?
Spot: 13 + 5 = 18.
Unheeding the strange web-shrouded eggs that dangle from the ceiling, Ragnarr charges at the alien arachnoid being, his fear of the monstrosity only intensifying the madness stemming from his battle lust. "THOOOOOORRR!!!" screams the man-beast, spittle dribbling from his scraggly chin and eyes going white as he swing his great axe in a high overhead arc at the abomination.
Attack: 17 + 8 + 2 (charge) = 27; Damage: 12 + 6 = 18!!!
Listen: 16 + 4 = 20.
The hair stands on the back of Ragnarr's neck as he hears the alien shrieks, then charges for the barn, eager to send whatever abomination hides therein back to the abyss from whence it come...
Okay, so maybe that was a bit articulate for Ragnarr's brain, but anyway...
Rolling ahead of my official turn...
Ragnarr howls and swings at the spider that is still on Utgaror.
Assuming its close enough for him to do so... 9 + 8 + 1 (bless) = 18. Damage: 5 + 6 + 1 = 12.
Reassured by Dorvarr's words, and seeing the spiders closing with the party, Ragnarr loses control, overcome by both fear and rage. The whites of his eyes show as he charges the nearest abomination, swinging his mighty axe with all his might.
Attack: 17 + 8 + 2 (charge) + 1 (bless) = 28; Damage: 11 + 6 + 1 (bless) = 18!
If that's enough to drop it and Ragnarr threatens another spider, he will use his cleave feat to attack a second arachnid: Attack: 5 + 8 + 1 (bless) = 14; Damage: 7 + 6 + 1 = 14. Didn't add the +2 from charge to the cleave attack... if that was wrong, please add it in!
Spot: 17 + 5 = 22.
Ragnarr's pace slows, uncertainty setting in as his eyes fall upon the slavering pack of giant spiders. He looks over his shoulder, and asks: "Dorvarr... There are so many of them... uh, Thor... he can protect his faithful from poison, right?"
I thought Vlad was behind us all... At this point, if Kveldulf is laying down cover fire, then it's likely that Ragnarr's faster movement rate would put him in the lead, followed by Dorvarr, Ottarr... and Vlad? But then again, I might just be disoriented...
Dorvarr Thorshammer wrote: "Vlad, Kveldelf, you two have experience with horses, right? Maybe you can calm these and head to the barn while the rest of deal with these bugs." The stout man turns to Ragnarr. "What do you say lad, ready to show these monsters what Thor's wrath means?" The man-beast grunts in assent and bears his jagged, uneven teeth, as he shoulders his bow and hefts his enormous axe. "Ready... Now let's put fear in the hearts of these monsters and make Thor proud..."
Ragnarr overtakes Dorvarr as he charges through the flames, trying to catch up with Kveldulf.
Reflex save: 13 + 3 = 16.
Ragnarr follows Dorvarr, great axe in one hand, short bow in the other.
How far are we from the lodge and spiders
Ragnarr scrambles up the hill to join Dorvarr, Ottarr, and Kveldulf (Climb: 7 + 4 = 11). Once he reaches them, he silently surveys the devastation, but waits to see what his companions will do before taking further action. "What foul sorcery commands demon spiders such as these?" he mutters to the others. "I don't like this..."
Wyrd_Wiklund wrote:
The two spiders at the top of the hill suddenly cease their threatening gnashing and as if called by an unheard voice retreat out of sight over the crest of the hill. The last wounded spider charges in a frenzy at Kveldulf, the closest human.

"What infernal spawn of Loki can call spiders to do its bidding?" grumbles Ragnarr as the two surviving arachnids vanish from site. The man-beast does not appear all that keen on giving pursuit, and waits to see what his companions will do.
Posting out of turn, just to keep things moving...
Not too keen on closing for melee with a group of monstrously large spiders, Ragnarr unshoulders his bow, knocks an arrow, and aims for the nearest foe... but the drifting smoke interferes with his aim,and his shot goes wide, the arrow landing out of sight.
3 + 5 = 8...
Spot: 15 + 5 = 20.
Ragnarr quickly finds the game trail leading inland, then does a double-take. "Look, up there, in the trees," he says, squinting through the smoke and pointing at some kind of giant spider's web, out of which juts a dessicated human arm. "Things here may be worse than we thought..."
The man-beast tightens his grip on his great axe, and scans the area nervously for signs of the creature that made such a monstrous web.
Listen: 1 + 4 = 5; Spot: 15 + 5 = 20.
Wyrd_Wiklund wrote: As the ship comes around a bend your eyes scan ahead downriver to the rapids searching for the tow-cable. However, you are surprised as you see ahead the canyon passage is obscured by heavy smoke as if from a fire further down the river. You can see the cable's hook but the rope is not taut as it seems to be only floating limply in an eddy near the bank. Just past where the hook floats, the river narrows further and the fast-moving river shoots down amidst the rocks and smoky haze.
"Hmmm... trouble already," grumbles Ragnarr as he gazes ashore and stops rowing. The man-beast quickly found his rythm on the oars, and the steady and physically demanding work seemed to keep his mind off his sea-born worries. "But here's a good reason to be stepping back on land, where we belong..."
As the ships leave the harbour, Ragnarr grabs onto a railing with all his might, and does not let go. His eyes are wide with fear. "Make Thor proud... make Thor proud... Make Thor proud..." he heeps muttering to himself, as if the words were a mantra.
Clearly, the man-beast won't be at the helm! ;-)
Here as well...

Of course Wyrd is welcome to correct these as he sees fit, but I know he's out of town right this instant, so I thought I'd save him some trouble.
Thanks, Dorvarr. So, we'll make that five doses of barbarian chew x 15 gp, 1 silversheen x 250 gp, 2 bear's endurance fish draught x 300 gp, 2 magic weapon oils x 50 gp, and the protection from evil charm as a gift. Total: 1,025 gp. The shepherd, unused to this kind of money, goes on a spending spree and blows it all in one go...

Wyrd_Wiklund wrote: As the barbarian strides back from Unn's abode whistling he notices the charming figure of Ragnhild by the town's well drawing forth a bucket of water...
Admiring the odd assortment of trinkets he has purchased from Unn, and smiling like the most innocent of children, the unwashed and malodorous man-beast approaches the well, then stops abruptly in his tracks as he notices Ragnhild. The wolf pelt covers his broad frame. He fumbles to retrieve the Mjolnir's amulet that the maiden had given him, while awkwardly juggling his new baubles, unsure which he should show off to her. He clears his throat roughly, trying to catch her attention. He stammers as he searches for the right words to say... "Ragnhild... the amulet you gave me... kept me safe... thank you... I... ahh... I... do you like these nice things I got from Unn?... I... will be going now... far from here... I... I..." His voice trails away as his goofy smile turns momentarily into a brief yet longing stare, then he turns his gaze towards his feet while keeping his bauble-filled palms turned toward her...
What do the barbarian's chew and silversheen do, and how much do they cost? Maybe I'm looking in the wrong place...
Ragnarr thanks Unn for her guidance and gift of the charm against evil spirits. Given his newfound and unexpected (advanced) wealth, he decides to spend much of his coin on the various other substances the old woman has that can call forth and enhance the "beast within." In other words, he takes all the barbarian's chew, the two draughts of fish oil, and the two remaining doses of (magic) weapon oil... and perhaps the silversheen, depending on its effects, and if he can afford it.
Before I finalize my purchases and go see Ragnhild... did we actually earn any monetary rewards during the adventure or afterwards? Sorry, if we did, I can't seem to find the post, and probably haven't updated my sheet to account for treasure...
Hmmm... any chance that Ragnarr's new cloak could grant him a bonus on Intimidate checks?

During the day, Bjorn the trapper arrives in town a bundle under his arm. After seeking out Kjelsberggson and the beastly shepherd, the tall blond-haired woodsman's face flashes with a wide grin. Unravelling the bundle he reveals the fine pelt cloak fashioned from the hide of Graypelt. It is as the trapper and his wife promised a small masterpiece. The pelt trails back in a wide, shaggy and warm cloak while the head of the beast rises up over the head of the wearer. The worg's face still contorted in beastial fury. An impressive piece of worksmanship and despite Ragnarr's bulk the cloak drapes well over his sturdy frame. The trapper adds, "I should think the tale of how the beast of Droskarfell was slain shall be told many times over the years in this hall."
Ragnarr returns the woodman's grin, his jagged and uneven teeth portruding awkwardly through his beaming smile. "'tis fine work... I am only too proud to wear this cloak, and to hear that the tale of Ragnarr, his friends, and old Graypelt will be told at the Alf for years to come. May the gods smile upon you and yours..." The man-beast hastily dons the cloak. The wolf-head, combined with Ragnarr's own feral appearance, create a truly fearsome look.
Ragnarr then returns to visit Unn, who has spent so many years providing guidance to the bestial shepherd. "Wise Unn... I have agreed to journey with my companions by ship to Halfdeane's lands... but have never been on the sea... I know not what I should bring, and I'm a little... uh..." His gravelly voice trails off momentarily. "Kind Unn, do you have anything that would grant me good health on this trip, and the continued favour of the gods?"
Is Bolli providind food and drink, or do we need to bring our own? My apologies if this was mentioned previously... After his visit with Unn, he will purchase whatever mundane supplies Bolli is not providing, and may try to snatch a last glimpse of Ragnhild.
