So you can either run this creature with the normal +7 grapple modifier, or rule that its pedipalps, which are quite nasty with hooks and suckers, grant it the +4 bonus to grapple checks (which I did). The pedipalps grant this beastie a free bite attack with a +4 bonus while grappling so you could argue that the +4 bonus also applies to the grapple check.

I was thinking along the same lines. I thought maybe the +4 applied to both grapple checks and the bite attack.

Thanks for the response Steve. As far as I could tell, base attack of +3, Str of +4, medium creature makes a grapple of +7. I saw no other mentioned bonuses. The stat block says +11. Perhaps it was an error.

Could someone break down the grapple mod of the Rhagodessa for me? I can't seem to figure it out, but I'm probably missing a bonus somewhere.

I don't think that sleep will work as it is mind affecting.

Speaking of this, could someone break down that grapple mod for me? I can't seem to figure it out, but I'm sure I'm missing something.

Finally! An adventure for me and my 321 closest friends! Can't wait for this one to see print.

When we print a watermark or other texture in the background of an adventure, we try to keep that background faint and unobtrusive. What do people think: are they too visible? We can always lighten them up more or do them less, but I personally think that they look pretty nice with backgrounds like that. And although players never see the magazine, it still needs to look awesome; DMs deserve pretty picturs and neat-looking adventures just as much as players do... perhaps more, since they do so much work!

As for ink costs... I believe that it costs us the same if we print a white page with a single black dot in the center as it does if we print a rainbow elemental fighting an animated box of 64 crayons; changing the backgrounds wouldn't save any money.

Wow. Someone needs to write an adventure with that epic rainbow elemental vs. crayon box battle in it.

Then again, that black dot sounds pretty sweet...

Are options from Dragon and Dungeon magazine allowed? Because that's where I find a lot of my "power gaming" stuff from.

Huh. I'd always pronounced it simply "Mar." Sadly, Maure did not make it into the Dragon Compendium's PronunseeAYshun Gyd...

TK

I have also been pronouncing it "Mar." Perhaps someone in the know could shed some light?

I was at the GenCon seminar when they talked about this a couple of days ago and I think that the miniature is meant to be a higher quality replacement of one of the pieces from the game. The game, I believe, is a board game and not miniatures based.

This thread is pretty sweet and you guys covered most of the cool ones, although I do need to put my vote in for one of the coolest creatures.

Hoardlings.

Oh. And phanatons are cool too.

Thanks for the responses. I'll check out issue #302 tonight when I get home. Does anyone know if issue #302 was written for 3.0 or 3.5? That seems like the timeframe when 3.5 was first released. The only reason I ask is because I'll have an easier time getting the article ok'd by my DM if it's 3.5 (even though the summoning rules didn't change much between 3.0 and 3.5 IIRC).

#302 would be 3.0. 3.5 started in issue #310 (one of the best issues ever.)

I was just wondering how the orange dragon flies. He doesn't appear to have wings, in the picture or the description, and there are no flight special abilities like with the yellow dragon or beholder, yet in the table he has a fly speed. Am I missing something?

Also, on the fumble table, the second and third entries are identical.
