But if they kept accepting and publishing material for 3.5 then the non-in-house-monetary-resources...err..."customers" would have less reason to adopt the obviously superior new and improved version of your product.

Having, at one time, been a customer of certain Workshops devoted to Games, I can attest that it royally sucks to purchase a new subset of rules to have it replaced/gotten rid of in a couple months/weeks by a brand new edition of the game. So I do appreciate that aspect of it.

Also, if the NIHMRs...dangit "customers" are sufficiently starved of currently useful product they will, in theory, binge on whatever is put before them without much thought.

Please pay no mind to my unnecessary bitterness. I tried to reduce it, but was only partially successful.

Sorry, it's the thing I can contribute to the thread.

Back when I was playing V:tM, we used to joke that we wanted to go to the same nursing home so that we could all game together into our nineties.

We were a bit concerned that we'd scare the other residents and visitors, but we figured that they'd just chalk it up to dementia or some other problem associated with advancing age.

But, yeah, I'll be looking for games when I'm "old"(er)--even if it is at the home. It'll help pass the time between visits from the kids.

The main problem (as I recall) was that a Gargantuan Orcus would not have been cheap. That's pretty scary because the rest of the Icons weren't cheap, and for Orcus to be prohibitively costed is just frightening. There were several posts (from Steve Shubert and Linnae) about this on Hordelings when Orcus was unveiled.

You can probably find the posts if you search for Gargantuan Orcus.

Of course, if I hadn't gotten the CRD at the Amazon "error" price, I wouldn't have ever gotten it.

Well, da-ang. I leave for a couple weeks and there's all sorts of excitement when I get back!

Unfortunately, the next two weeks are going to be rather busy for me. I won't be able to negotiate until I handle some rather pressing matters (and will then not have access to a computer until the last days of January).

If, in the meanwhile, you find a trader please feel free to pursue those offers.

I will email when things calm down for me.

I apologize for the inconvenience,

That depends on what you mean by "classic".

AD&D (1st Ed.) had Half-Orcs...they were the only non-human race to earn a "U" in something other than Thief. Half-Orcs earned their "U" in Assassin.

They even had "Zarak" in the action figure line.

I have all of these except #13. I'm CanoftheCaveBeer over at Hordelings, and there are several of us maintaining this trade thread over there.

OK, so I'm not missing anything (other than a cool tile that was never real)...I didn't know if it had come from one of the other Gamemastery products.

Thanks for all the great work on those tiles!

In my campaigns, both sexes of dwarfs have beards. But only males have moustaches, and female beards don't grow very long. Not enough there to bead or braid.

So would the males then bead, braid, etc. their beards? Spend hours in the bathroom primping, combing and getting the musty mushroom smell out?

Sorry, that's a bit silly, but I'm actually curious.

Where does the 5th tile (the outdoors one with the "Y" forked road and statue, shown on Card 8) come from?

I used to play in a Planescape game with bearded dwarven women. The DM made a point of describing their beards as shiny, silky, etc.

I didn't have a problem with it then, and don't now, because different races would have different standards of beauty. But I rather like having dwarven women with beards--albeit better kept, and in my homebrew it will probably be about 50/50 or 33/33/34 (no facial hair/heavy facial hair/full beard) with more females taking better care of their facial hair and doing more braiding/pleating, etc.

Thanks, Cosmo!

You guys are great.

I received my order today (January 03, 2008) and noticed that the Grove of the Mad Druid (OGL) Adventure Only packets were not included. Everything else was just fine and spiffy as could be.

If someone could get those packets out to me (or let me know what I have to get things moving), I'd be very appreciative.

Thanks again,

Eric

I was thinking that you should use barbarians from the jungle...not forests, but jungles.

But my option number two was from the deserts...

Happy New Year, Paizo (that's much nicer than my normal seasonal greeting). I hope to be able to give you guys more money in '08!

The first question that has come up in discussions is location. There are currently two main options: Seattle (closer to Paizo) or Vegas (more centrally located).

As a slight quibble, a central location would be cough, coughOmaha or even KC.

Vegas is a convenient location.

Have I mentioned the many amenities that Omaha, Nebraska (don't look at me like that) has to offer? Good food--check that excellent food, a world-class zoo, great NCAA and Major Junior level hockey, AAA baseball, some nice museums and shopping (for those with SOs who don't game), many convention centers and even a couple casinos across the river...

Oh, and we're generally pretty affordable, too.

4.0 as an April Fool's joke?

It solves one problem, but re-emphasizes WotC's dismissive attitued towards existing customers. The "My Little Pony RPG" is one way of yanking a customer's chain, 4.0 is a completely different animal.

And I'd have to go back and buy Desert of Desolation.

I was just thinking that with the availability of game pieces (to use holding a 2d cardboard token) on the internet and the perforated sheets for business cards run through the home printer, that pitching a...err...table tents wouldn't even really be necessary.

Oliver von Spreckelsen wrote:
Well, I thought that access to the miniatures would be included in the monthly fee for the DI... Having to pay extra is another argument for me against testing these waters. IN addition, you are only able to use them as long as you are subscriber to the DDI. Basically you don't even "own" those minis.

And just what will happen with the inevitable D&D 5.0 when the Dragons, demons, devils and other creatures are once again redesigned?

Will WotC update those designs for free? Will they delete all the old images? Will you have to register as a 4.0 or 5.0 player? Will the coding be changed and 4.0 figs will only be usable in 4.0 games (regardless of any changes in appearance to the figures)?

I know I'm getting ahead of myself, but I think about these things. And if I am able to look this far ahead in my thinking, you know that the designers/managers at WotC are thinking about them too. I mean, let's face it...I ain't the sharpest knife in the drawer.

As far as the actual level of "optional-ness" of the DDI, I'll believe it when I see it. And yes, I realize that it will be 100% unprovable to me until 5.0 occurs, and it will be 100% irrelevant because I won't touch 4.0 with a proverbial 10' pole. I am a "no win situation" for WotC.

Right now, WotC has used up any goodwill they ever had with me, and as a (naturally) bitter and suspicious person I doubt that it will be very long before options like racial powers, feats, magic items and new monsters that were "cut" from physical books start making their appearance in the DDI (either in Dragon or Dungeon or as part of the unlocked content of a book). Once that happens, it is no longer an "option" and you are now paying twice for material that you should only have paid once to acquire.

I do wish that I didn't feel quite so bitterly about this.

Well, if the character is able to use his/her/its head in the same manner that a person would be able to an arm (same range, mobility, limits to perception, etc.), then I could be persuaded to allow it.

But in most cases I'd say "no"...

This isn't exactly related to Paizo, but I had a similar situation when dvdexpress was still a going concern. Before I moved out on my own I had a fair amount of disposable income and a DVD collection to prove it.

One December I received two or three discs that shipped after another purchase arrive a week before the one that shipped earlier.

I guess I'm just trying to say that it does happen, hopefully it will get sorted out on its own within the next few days.

I use this name and one other in most cases.

On a couple other boards (where I have my own avatar) it makes a bit more sense, but it comes from a picture that I saw wherin Pinky and The Brain dressed up as Kosh Naranek and Londo Mollari (Babylon 5).

Since I'm:
A) not bent on taking over the world (or the galaxy)
B) not known for my ability to make sense, and
C) TROZ!

So I went with Pinky.

Sticky notes and/or penny sleeves plus erasable markers will work as well if you're concerned about marring your cards.

As much as I like me my Gnolls, I need only the Hyena variety. I'm not terribly fond of the giggly scavengers, but there's something special about Gnolls.

Yeah, I found that out... ;-) I've been able to that with other boards, so I thought I'd give it a whirl. No real harm done, it's not like I was posting a posting a path to spiritual enlightenment.

I just found it odd that when I moused over the "Preview" button (after having jumped back) that the tool tip was showing "Cancel". I had hoped that information might prove useful to whomever it is that tinkers with the code.

Aaargh!!

I just lost a mammoth post due to this same issue. Unfortunately I hadn't read this thread yet. Hopefully another poster can learn from my mistake and follow the advice put forth here.

Another weird thing, when I backed up to the page after being kicked to the front I put the mouse over the "preview" button and it said "cancel".

Also check Hordelings and Maxminis for their respective painters sections. Some of the regular posters there (excepting myself of course) are very highly skilled.

Guys like Runelord, Peter Lee, Zenthrus, griffrat, glumag, Dark Father (does a lot of 40K), and gals like smithmeg (the only female painter that comes to mind) all do top notch work. Those are just the names off the top of my head; there are plenty more.

It's been years since I frequented maxminis, but Hordelings has quarterly challenges based on an Uncommon mini from a recent D&D Miniatures set. I know that there's a Q&A section on Hordelings where those of us that sling paint attempt to give pointers and advice to those just starting out.

Has the news on the item cards hit the boards/blog yet- couldn't find anything.

The announcement has been delayed until after the new year.

If you're the DM (which I'm assuming you are, given your username), I'd ask your players to purchase the basic gear sets--especially if the DM is purchasing supplemental sets. It is, IMO, unrealistic to expect the DM to cover all the expenses like this. And, as attactive as the cards are, there may be players that would prefer the normal pencil & paper way of monitoring inventory.

Oh, and the mundane items (like healing kits, backpacks, etc.) are in the Adventure Gear deck.

There is at least one site that I know of (CCG Armory) that deals in singles from Relics of War and Heros Hoard.

DeadDMWalking wrote:
But, since it appears that item card approach has changed, how can I be sure which decks are non-random?

Only Hero's Hoard and Relics of War are random (note that these are the only products available as boosters or in display form). All other sets are fixed decks.

Same bat-time, same bat-channel, next bat-week.

That's cool. I'll be here.

It's only a game, but it's been part of our lives (in some cases) for over twenty years. That's longer than many relationships in this day and age!

I'd be more worried if folks weren't getting upset.

But I think that ultimately most of the noise is created by folks who don't understand why the rest of the gaming population doesn't agree with their particular point of view (pro 4.0 or against 4.0).

I wouldn't go for the "good stuff" until you figure out whether or not you wish to continue painting and how much effort you want to put into it. I mean, some folks are happy with block color while others want to go to drybrushing and washing and others go even further with blending colors and the like.

If you've got a halfway decent craft store (Hobby Lobby, Michael's, or heck even Wal*Mart) near you, you can get some effective paints and cheap brushes for between $20 and $30. I know of several folks who manage to do some amazing work with cheap paint.

I'd recommend a couple metallics, something for a flesh tone (or two), and a decent spread of colors. Don't skimp on the Browns. A good brown is worth a lot when it comes time to do a wash--and I think gives better results than just straight black.

I'd also recommend a hobby knife/scalpel to trim flash (excess metal bits) and mold lines as well as a good "super" or "crazy" glue in case you have multi-part figures. Files and pin vises can wait until you decide how much effort you want to put into your work.

*scans*

Here new announcement...C'mere li'l fella. Pinky's got a nice announcement snack for you...

Penny sleeves and sticky notes...No defilement of cards necessary. :-)

Or penny sleeves and print-outs of your notes. Either way, the card stays nice and safe while the player gets a nifty card.

Y'know, I almost posted that very same idea...except I used the word "kit" and was a bit more vague (i.e. Warrior Kit, Spellcaster Kit, etc.).

I thought I was pushing it a bit far, but I guess I'm not the only one doing so!

Boggle wrote:

Also i think there needs to be some variations just to spice up this basic equipment

Why not ask your players to purchase their own packs of basic cards? If you're DMing and going through the added expense of acquiring the cards to represent magic items (or other significant treasures), I think that most players should be pretty willing to pick up one or two boxes to help enhance their own experience.

Now, if you're running for your kids...that's a bit of a different issue as all the money is likely to come from you anyway. There's not much I can suggest that would help there.

Still, I wouldn't mind seeing a double-sized (or perhaps larger) "Player's Pack" of cards that would handle all the basics for each player.

A penny sleeve and a sticky-note can go a long way to keeping track of items in quantity.

DeadDMWalking wrote:
In second edition, this caused drow equipment to fail after long exposure to the surface (it decayed when removed from the source of the radiation).

This is, I believe, a holdover from AD&D. Possibly from the Fiend Folio, but almost definitely from a book no newer than Unearthed Arcana...I'm confident of this because I used to design endless Drow characters. Oddly enough many were Chaotic Good (my preferred alignment) and some were Rangers (my favorite class). This was years before I'd heard of any famous Drow other than Leda/Eclavdra.

Anyway, items of Drow manufacture (hand crossbows, chainmail, etc.) had to be carefully protected from sunlight and/or "recharged" by repeated exposure to the energies of the Underdark to keep them from losing their bonuses. Careful containment would delay their ruin, but only for a short time (a few months?).

As for elf hate...That's why if my homebrew ever goes forward there's two races of Elf: Elf and Drow. There will be no High, Wild, Wood, Sea, Sun, Moon, Grey, Silver, Gold, or any other variety. Just "Elf" and "Drow". And Dwarves are "Dwarf" or "Duergar".

Dragon Magazine has really not been much better.

I would like to play devil's advocate here, and say that WotC has given us exactly what they have promised us...

Not what their posted promises have been, that has obviously fallen short. I never expected them to be able to live up to that, but what they've shown us with website postings prior to now is exactly what they've continued in the "articles" for Dragon in Dungeon.

In other words, it's a dismal disappointment. I will be proud to not support 4.0.

Damn it feels good to be a grognard...

When I first started looking at the Item Cards, I figured that they would be great for the magic items only.

But then I started thinking about it and my opinion started changing. Although I'm still more on the Magic Items/Special Items side of things I can certainly see where it would be beneficial to have a graphic representation of much of an adventurer's equipment.

I think I'd like to see two or three "basic" sets that would have more of the commonly encountered mundane items (although not entirely mundane) and the rest of the sets focus more on the "Special" or "Magical" items...but I'm flexible that way.

In a couple weeks, I think I'm going to track down more of the Item Pack One set..."just in case."

D&D is like art (or porn)...It's tough for me to describe, but I generally know it when I see it. Like art, it's a matter of taste as well: not everyone likes Pollack or even Picasso.

For me, 3.5 is still D&D, barely...but what I've heard about 4.0 doesn't sound like anything I know. Somehow it just feels too different to be D&D anymore.
