Last night I told the PC wizard "You feel the foul taint of Kyuss".
He of course replied that he wasn't about to feel Kyuss' taint, especially if it's foul. It brought the session to a halt and the players to tears.

I'd like to hear other descriptions I shouldn't use in an attempt to avoid breaking the mood.

I have forced every one of my players to DM, including my boyfriend (the most reluctant). They have all sat in the big chair. I think everyone should do it to get a better idea of the difficulty, and maybe all players would respect the DM more.

On the reverse, DMs need to sit in the player's seat to remember that information is only what the DM gives. And to understand that EVERY DOOR IS SCARY.

I have to disagree with casting it to appear in mid air. Cloudkill is a conjuration:

Conjuration: A creature or object brought into being or transported to your location by a conjuration spell cannot appear inside another creature or object, nor can it appear floating in an empty space. It must arrive in an open location on a surface capable of supporting it.

So the cloudkill must be cast so as to be touching the ground.
But, it's 20' high, so if you can see a point over the castle wall 20' up, you should be able to cast the spell inside the walls.

I wouldn't be too quick to run back in there either if the first two fights seemed incredibly difficult. It's the impression that you've stumbled into the Dungeon Entrance for a Higher Level Party. "Excuse me, but where's the Dungeon Entrance for Level 4 groups?"

If you're trying to show them the joys of dungeon hacking, start slowly, with softball fights, before giving them a epic.

Thank god none of this matters when I cast fireball.

When I DM I roll the first save in secret, so the players do not know anything is amiss. There wouldn't be any way of knowing you were infected until you started feeling the effects. Once the disease sets in, I let em figure it out with a heal check.

I showed the player this thread. He plans to Raise Animal Companion, and pledged to never flame strike him again.

I don't plan on any penalty.

We haven't focused on roleplaying much, which is a disservice to the two new players in the group. There has been interaction roleplay, but not much in the realm of character development. I plan on emphasizing roleplay opportunities more, to see if they are interested. If not, we'll just continue with the current style. But since they are new, they should have a chance to experience different styles of play.

It's one thing for the animal to sacrifice it's life. It's another to die by friendly fire. The druid showed absolutely no concern for the animal being in the line of fire.

However, they were having difficulty with the encounter (there were a couple of octopins in there as well). And the wolf did have evasion - he just blew the save.
