By the way James, I'm shocked you would never play a dwarf or a wizard. Surely someone of your calibre as a player, editor, designer, and DM could play every class and race without a problem. If you can't make a dwarf or wizard character interesting, who can?
Don't take my remarks as a sign of disrespect or sarcasm. If there is anyone in the industry I respect and admire, it's you.

Then I realize there are some people who know... what say you guys? I'm fairly certain that Eric Boyd's FR conversion notes will cover this subject, converstion notes that should be available sometime soon. Without consulting them, and running off the top of my head and not-100%-exact FR lore, if I were running Age of Worms in FR I'd make the following deity substitutions.
Established Religions in Diamond Lake
St. Cuthbert —> Ilmater
Hieroneous —> Tyr
Obad-hai —> Silvanus
Wee Jas —> Kelemvor
Ebon Triad
Hextor —> Loviatar
Vecna —> Velsharoon
Erythnul —> Garagos
I'd keep Kyuss as Kyuss, personally, even in an FR game. But if you wanted to go with a more FR-friendly deity, I'd probably convert him into Moander.
Again... your milage may vary, and I'm sure Eric's conversion notes will have better choices. But them's the changes I'd make in my game. Personally I think Bane is a better choice than Loviatar as a replacement for Hextor, but I'm sure you had your reasons. I also think that the whole St. Cuthbert/Ilmater choice was also strange, but again you have stated your reasons.
What would your choices be for an Eberron campaign? Everyone intending to run the new series in Eberron would like to know.
Here's an interesting conundrum. If you were able to put together a new edition of the Player's Handbook, and could include 12 core classes (only) from any source, what would they be?
so you like new monsters, eh? I'll see what I can do to put a few new monsters in my next few adventure proposals then. Of course, they will still have to have some relevance to the adventure. I'm not silly enough to believe that you'll accept an adventure simply because it has the dreaded Yoorgithilinorothax in it!
Now that's great news, and sure to please DRAGON readers everywhere (well, almost). Actually, I think that some of the new core classes (warlock, scout, etc.) will become so popular with roleplayers that they will make it into the 4th Edition Players Handbook :)
Beautifully put Eric. I was just playing devil's advocate, and have never had a problem with any of your editorial decisions. In one way its a shame though, since a well crafted adventure or series of articles on the material presented in the book would have been nice. I suppose its just the same with people being upset that the new core classes won't get coverage in class acts.
Isn't it funny that while "The Porphyry House Horror" was an adventure to introduce material from "The Book of Vile Darkness", DUNGEON never did an adventure (to my knowledge) to introduce material from "The Book of Exalted Deeds". The same could be said for that controversial issue of DRAGON that did the same thing. There was no exalted issue of DRAGON compiled either.
I just discovered this little old thread, and was quite chuffed when I read it. While I can't claim responsibility for the severed finger (I was more generic in my description of that area), I thought the adventure as a whole would be an interesting roleplaying experience. I'm just glad that a few people liked it!
Really, the firre is only broken if a DM allows one to be used as a PC race in his or her game. Using the firre/seeker song combo for an NPC is fine as long as the DM does not abuse the power of the creature in a way that is unfair to the players (or overly favorable to them either).
The other thing to remember is that its a broken monster/prestige class combination, and not something worse. Thankfully, 3.5 has pretty much gotten rid of most of the broken spells, magic items, etc. that used to exist in 3.0. A broken monster/prestige class combo at least isn't available to every player.
How about this for a doozy. I have had at least 6 articles that have been sucked into the vortex at DRAGON (all dating from last year), and not one of them has been formally (or even informally) rejected. This has caused me to become somewhat hesitant to write to DRAGON with my queries (although I have sent a few more in the past month or two). Thankfully, my success with DUNGEON has been a lot greater, and I have had a few small adventures published with them with more in the pipeline. Persistance is a virtue in such matters, and people should press on despite the setbacks. What am I saying!? All of you other writers stop writing now and just give up! It's useless I tell you, useless :)
Ok Drakor, I'll see if I can help you out.
firstly, a firre eladrin must be an advanced specimen or have some class levels to meet the requirements of the prestige class, since a normal eladrin cannot have 13 ranks in a skill.
Secondly, since the firre must be exposed to a seeker's musical ability the DM can make this as hard or as easy to accomplish as he or she wants.
Thirdly, while a firre can use bardic music as a bard can, a pedantic DM might say that this does not meet the requirements of the prestige class. The DM might say that the firre needs to be an actual bard. I say that this is pendatic because all it says under the requirements to become a seeker is "bardic music ability".
Other than that, your'e right. The combination is exceptionally powerful, and might even be considered "broken". Then again, the song ability of the firre is powerful enough to begin with!
Mmmmm... It seems that some of my points were already made by Chris. That's the trouble with threads, sometimes you end up hearing the same thing over and over again!
Here's a few more points to remember:
1) Dismissing a spell or using a command word is a standard action, so a wizard or sorcerer could not throw a pebble and command it to return to its normal size in the same round. He would have to give it to another player and use a readied action to command it to enlarge at the right time.
2) Because of the command word limitation you could never throw and enlarge more than one pebble at a time, but...
3) Remember that the shrunken object returns to its normal size when it strikes a solid object. When this happens is up to the DM. He may have the object return to normal size just in time to inflict damage or say that the pebble hits and then returns to its normal size after it has lost all momentum.
There are lots of other uses for shrink object. How 'bout someone come up with a list of uses for the shrink item spell. Also, can anyone say turn pebble to boulder. I'm sure that nifty old 2nd edition spell has been redone somewhere for 3.5.
On a side note (this one directed at James, Eric and Co.) Will the Chamber of Antiquities include a section on how to use it with the whole Eli plot thread? Also, if it is a continuation of issue #112, how much of the adventure will be dependant on whether the PCs have explored the other levels detailed in that issue? It's just something I thought I'd bring up.
And what about all those evil religions in the region James? From the cover of issue #124 I'd say that there might well be be a secret cult of Kyuss operating in the area. By the way, while its not what this thread is about the cover artwork for issue #124 is awesome. Is that a few new iconic characters I see?
Unfortunately I never got around to writing advanced stats for her. My idea for Turlath was a multiclass wizard/druid with a bit of fiendish blood in his veins who hated all mammalian lifeforms (his disgust for his own heritage was manifested in his desire to destroy elves and other humanoids). He created the needlefolk race to destroy the elves and was responsible for breeding all sorts of bizarre plants. In the end I never ran with this in my own campaign. It was more of a cool idea I wanted to share with other DMs, so they could take it and run with it themselves.
Thanks for your kind words regarding Amarantha and the ideas about how to keep her alive and kicking.
Originally she was a half-fiend dryad sorcerer who willingly bonded with the ironmaw and spearheaded Turlath's corrupted plant army. This idea was tweaked for publication and as a result she became more of a tragic figure than was originally intended.
