    Paddy O'Donnegal was the 4th of six children in a poor urban household. With more perspicacity and charisma than his rougher older siblings, he made his mother proud by becoming ordained in the priesthood, only to shatter her hopes by immediately turning down his parish to enlist in the City Watch -- hoping to prove to his older siblings that he's tougher than they are, and hoping to set a law-abiding example to the younger ones. Seeing the seamy side of life, he becomes obsessed with the interaction between life and death, and fascinated with odd knowledge of all kinds.
