Othoe looks at the hole. Too bad I don't have fireball... or cloudkill. That would work too. he hesitates, Of course there are the children, but some accidental deaths would be acceptable I guess. Is the hole large enough for medium creatures as well as us small folk?
Othoe helps make camp with the others and also does his turn at watch. All this rough living, I thought I'd be past that once I came into some money. Ah well. I'll never get these scrolls penned in this environment! Still warm, he things kind thoughts of Brickasnurd for the Endure Elements spell. He listens to the others chat as he drifts off to a fitful sleep cleaning his nails. In the morning he prepares his spells, casts Endure Elements, and helps with the morning meal. He looks at the rickety bridge in the daylight, "OK, so what's the plan? Should I go across first with the rope and tie it to something stout?"
Othoe eyes Jeva carefully. Sure she's no longer a were-creature, he shrugs. "OK then. Be careful out there. It's cold and there are many nasty beasts out tonight." He continues on with the others happily. One less thing to worry about! I'm sure she'll be fine. Now where are those kobolds?
First the fey and now kobolds? This town doesn't do a particularly good job of preserving its young. Othoe throws one final prestidigitation on Chrystosm to clean up the last of the bile from his lips (and uses a little on himself to 'brighten up') and follows Dorial to the other campsite. "A few days old? Can you still track them?" Othoe will, out of habit more than anything, cast detect magic on the campsite looking for anything that might have gotten stomped into the ground by mistake.
Alright then, glad that's over. "So now what do we do? I can't imagine the girl is in any shape to move with us, we can't take the time to take her all the way back to town, and even I think it would be cruel to leave her here in what used to be her torture chamber." Othoe sighs. "I suppose we could carry her with us..." he looks to Simon, "Couldn't we? I don't like it, but I can't think of anything else to do just now."
Othoe watches as Chrystosm and the girl writhe on the ground in pain. He looks at Simon and says dryly, "So what exactly are we supposed to do?" Seems to me we just wait this out, but maybe Simon has a plan. Othoe shrugs and casts Prestidigitation to wipe some of the froth from Chrystosm's lips.
Othoe finds himself a comfortable spot upstairs where he can look in the direction of Nimeon and Dorial. I don't like them going off alone like this. This could bite us worse than the werewolf... He listens to what goes on below and watches for signs of combat beyond as he fingers his spell component pouch idly checking over its contents in his mind. Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (17) + 8 = 25
Heal Check: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (9) + 0 = 9 "Sure Dorial, but can we afford to go all the way back to town to cure this one child, while many more are lost - hiding in the forest during winter, slowly freezing to death or worse?" "Whatever we do, let us do it quickly however and get moving again. ...and yes, by all means, let us tie her up. Does anyone have manacles by chance?"
"So now what? If Elara already tried the wolfsbane and it didn't work, what can we do to the beast?" Othoe stays close to light the proceedings. "Do you think the girl did all this damage and killing? Maybe Elara didn't use enough wolfsbane. I don't know how it all works, but we have to do something. I don't think we can carry around a werewolf while we hunt fey and children alike. That's just asking for trouble."
Othoe will bind her wounds to make sure she doesn't bleed out, but otherwise stays out of the conversation except to note, "Sorry, I don't know how to cure what ails her. None of my magics contain that sort of power." He shrugs and goes back to the house and peers into the basement. "Anybody got a light?"

When he can see the girl again, he tries to injure her using a pair of Magic Missiles w/ Toppling Spell. Acrobatics: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 1 = 10 Magic Missile x2: 1d4 + 3 + 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 3 + (2) + 1 = 7 Trip CMB: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11 He eyes the creature before him and tries to identify it.
On hearing the lass speak of a basement, he searches harder in the rubble for a basement stairwell or trap door. Unless it's obvious, it eludes poor Othoe. Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (2) + 8 = 10 Did I find anything in my previous search?
Othoe eyes the young maiden briefly. Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (17) + 8 = 25 He turns to the group, "Her injuries are healing so she must have been attacked some time ago and left for dead. Or perhaps she vanquished her foe. Either way the fey were certainly here and may be close still." While Dorial talks to the girl, Othoe walks over to the remains of the orphanage and looks around. He'll cast Detect Magic as part of his search. Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (14) + 8 = 22 He's careful not to disturb too much - partly because he doesn't want to get dirty, and partly because he doesn't want to stumble disrespectfully over a stack of bodies in the blackened building.
Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (8) + 8 = 16
"Young woman, come here, we're not going to hurt you. We've plenty of food besides." Othoe takes out some rations and water and offers it to the lady. The risks of living on your own in the wilderness when there are evil fey about.
If we're going to continue doing all this marching about in the forest, maybe I should get a dog or pony or something to ride. Othoe looks back at the icy river and shivers. Though I suppose it wouldn't do much good in a lot of areas. Maybe I should learn the mount spell instead. Get a wand of it. Othoe marches along with the others rushing to keep up.
Othoe rises and prepares his spells. He then packs what little gear he has, casts Endure Elements, and is ready to move on. Status:

Othoe warms himself by the fire. Sure, his Endure Elements spell is nice, but so is the toasty warmth of a good fire. "Seeing as we need to rest a while anyway, I'm going to get some sleep so I can refresh my spells in the morning. If no one minds that is." Presuming no dissent, Othoe curls up as close as he safely can to the fire, closes his eyes, and tries to sleep. In the morning he pours over his spellbook and prepares his spells for the day. Spellset if Othoe gets enough rest:
0) Detect Magic, Prestidigitation, Ray of Frost*, Spark
1) Comprehend Languages, Endure Elements, Grease, Magic Missile* w/ Topple x2 2) Flaming Sphere*, Glitterdust, Knock, Scorching Ray*

"We're going to need to warm him up and dry him off when he gets out so he doesn't freeze. I'll get the fire started." Othoe begins to collect firewood and will use the Spark spell to get the fire going. Though he is rushing, I presume it will take a little while so I'll drop out of initiative.
Othoe watches people cross quietly. He also spends some effort watching the path and other approaches for evil fey or other hostiles. Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (10) + 8 = 18 Crossing an icy river at night is insane. I can't believe we're doing this now. If someone slips that rope, we'll never find them...
Othoe looks up at Kast and nearly laughs at the absurdity. He considers putting his wig back on to cover the light just to force another casting of the orison. Instead he smiles and looks closely at the doll. "Look. There are chew marks, here and here. Dorial, did you find any drag marks on the child's trail?" Might be too late for this one...
Othoe too peers into the cold night (thank you Endure Elements!) looking to see what might be ready to assault them. Apparently however he's still catching his breath and sees nothing of substance.
Simon Shrewsbury wrote: "Well, at least one of the children crossed the river, hopefully they all still live. I vote we continue through the night if possible, they may be wet and cold, and I doubt that some of us can even sleep knowing they're out there needing our help." I could sleep quite well thank you. Othoe keeps his thoughts to himself and keeps his lips shut as he trudges onward into the dark. What are we using for light sources? Othoe has no means to see in the dark and no lights of his own. Othoe looks at the doll (presuming a light source of some kind) and tries to remember who's it is.
Nimeon's awfully pissed. He should really learn to relax. Tension's a killer. Othoe struggles to keep up with the pace and continues to say nothing. He does wonder at the health of the children, but while he is concerned, it's not a close thing for him as it is for Nimeon. More of a 'I heard from a guy who heard from a guy' sort of thing. Still, you can trouble adults all you want, but there's a special hell for messing about with children. Othoe just hopes he can help send those responsible there. If he can only keep up! "huffa huffa huffa"
Othoe shrugs his shoulders, That's what I get for following Kast's stomach. He begins to look in the dirt for tracks from Dorial and the big lumbering teenager. Survival: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (8) + 0 = 8 "I have no idea where they went. Can either of you see them?"
We need to hurry! Othoe looks at the apples, thinks about his hard rations, and smells the stew wafting through the open door. I'm sure Nimeon will be fine. He's likely napping in a tree somewhere... Othoe follows his nose and heads inside leaving Mikra to his apples. "Pint down here please!"
My understanding is that everything has been completely identified except the travelling chest. And no, you can't take 20 on a spellcraft check. Well, I suppose you could, but it would take 20 days... That said, Othoe thinks the chest is safe with Brickasnurd. Further, it's not something we can carry around, and we need to hurry after the children.
So... to summarize: Finish Identifying
Give to the Fey
Sell/Cash (Total 13,000gp or 2,166gp each)
Destroy
Claimed
I think we cash out here so everyone has 2,191gp to play with. Othoe will purchase another Pearl of Power (first level spells) and 200gp more in rare inks for scroll scribing (for his massive free time).
I don't know where we are on the CLW wand, but some of the items we've found so far need more identification. I've summarized the treasure sheet below with my suggestions. Finish Identifying
Give to the Fey
Sell/Cash
Destroy
Someone should claim or we sell
Othoe will try to ID the items he missed before now that it's a new day. Whatever he still misses, he'll ask Brickasnurd to help identify.
Othoe nods conspiratorially at Brickasnurd, "Got it." Othoe wends his way back to the front of the building and gets the parties attention. "Come on everyone, I've something to show you - something that will help us." He tries to keep his voice down so as not to bring along the other punters waiting at the front. He leads then around the back, and into the shop. "Brickasnurd is waiting for us. Let us hurry!" Once inside, Othoe will buy a spare Spell Component Pouch for 5gp and tuck it away in one of his overcoat pockets. He'll also check to see if his Pearl of Power is finally in. (original order)
Othoe sort of slumps to the back of the party, and then around the back of the building. He lets himself in the back door with his key and goes looking for Brickasnurd. "Afternoon. Er, I was wondering if you could open up for a few moments. My mates and I are headed out hunting down the children and need a few items - quickly. That is if it's OK."
Othoe listens to the tall folk yell and scream and argue - all the while agreeing with each other. I've never understood the need to yell so much. At least we're not going to be taken away in chains. Sounds like Simon's making good headway too. Might have a solid lead to boot! Othoe remains quiet though he does gather up his dagger and tuck it back in his belt-sheath where it belongs.
"Seems fair to me. There is a lot going on, and much to discuss. We are, I think, all on the same side on this one, so there's no need for hostility. Let's get to business shall we?" Othoe brushes off the rising tempers of the last few moments and tries to put a calm face on the proceedings. He leaves his dagger on the pile of weapons begun by Dorial. Diplomacy: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (18) + 8 = 26
GM_Verdigris wrote:
