Male Halfing (Chelaxian) (HP: 30/32, AC: 12 (f11/t12))

Othoe wonders at the evil so strongly rooted in this little town. I wonder what drew it here of all places?

He goes to Javros' home and looks for the boy. He patiently explains his father is dead - died in prison. After the boy recovers a bit (possibly some future day in fact), he reiterates his offer to teach the boy a few of his own spells in exchange for the unwholesome tome his father possessed.

"In fact this book has some value, and I'll see to it you get every penny, over time, so that you shall not want over much."

He returns to Bricks for dinner and explains the boys situation to his friend. "I'll buy the spells at full face value and put the money aside for Javros' education and personal needs. I'd appreciate it muchly if I could remain here for a time. My finances, especially after this latest hit, are woefully thin. Though I suppose with all the recent deaths, there are likely to be jobs I could do to help make ends meet."

Othoe doesn't relish the idea of working for a living, but he has commitments now that he must fulfill. He leafs through the new spellbook thinking of how a few of those spells could, in fact, come in handy...

Perception: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (16) + 11 = 27

Othoe pays more attention to Bricks than his allies on the walk through town, though he does take note of a few things in passing. After he helps Bricks settle in, he begs some time away to run a personal errand.

"I think you should be all set now. I need to look into something, but I'll be back this evening. Maybe we can have a nice quiet dinner."

Othoe sets out on a hunt for Javros' father. He presumes the man is dead, and likely good riddance, but he needs to know for sure. He starts with the Sheriff's office - checking the cells and tracking down where folks were led when they were taken away.

Othoe helps Bricks to his home to save any spell books and other high value items seeing the rest of the party seems to have the tree well in hand.

"I think Dorial will drop that tree in the right spot, so your home should be safe, but let's be sure shall we?"

Othoe walks up to the now clean Bricks.

"How are you doing? I'm out of healing I'm afraid, and Simon is off healing the truly desperate. I think we should get away from this tree. No telling where it'll fall as it burns."

He helps Brickasnurd, in a dignified manner, get away from the tree.

Othoe absent-mindedly cleans Brickasnurd with his ongoing Prestidigitation as he hears Dorial's query. He looks around for the child but sees none.

Othoe makes his way out of the fire keeping his head down as the flames rage around him.

When he gets a little way out (single move) he casts Prestidigitation and does a quick clean of himself while waiting to see if the others need help getting free.

Seeing that Bricks is able to manage his own movement, Othoe runs for the door getting as far as the entrance thanks to his short stubby legs.

Now that Bricks is healing though the vines remain, Othoe tries to free him with one last big rip, just like a bandaid. He casts Scorching Ray.

Othoe changes tack. He leaves the injuries to his companions, and instead tries to soften the blows on poor Bricks, trapped in the vines. He draws a scroll, casts Infernal Healing, steps up on Bricks and touches him with all the healing graces of Asmodeus.

"You'll live my friend, just hang in there. This is going to hurt before you're free."

Othoe sees Bricks hanging from the vines and gets angry. Hoping to do more damage to the vine than his friend, he casts Magic Missile w/ Toppling Spell on the vines.

Magic Missile x4: 1d4 + 4 + 3d4 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 4 + (4, 1, 2) + 3 = 15 (I'm assuming they can't be 'tripped' hehe)

If the vines fall away, he closes with his friend to help him free. Otherwise he simply 5' steps closer (what I did on the map).

Othoe takes a deep breath of fresh air, the last he'll have he thinks for it must certainly be foul in that tree. Then, after hesitating as long as he could, he dives into the maw and deep into the tree (double move).

Othoe shrugs at Kasts ministrations as he moves closer to the burning tree. He stops and uses his pearl of power to reclaim a magic missile with toppling spell back to memory and prepares to enter the tree fully next round.

"We're really all rushing into a burning magical tree covered in dangerous fungus?"

Othoe straightens his vest, "OK then."

Othoe blinks his eyes a moment to clear the blood and surveys the battlefield. He sees the Satyr and another target. He first moves his flaming sphere onto the fey creature
Flaming Sphere (fire): 3d6 + 3 ⇒ (4, 6, 4) + 3 = 17 Reflex DC 17

Shortly after the flaming sphere rolls into the square, it fizzles and dies (he takes the damage this round (if he fails his save) and then the sphere dissipates).

Then he fires his last Magic Missile w/ Toppling Spell hoping to finish him off.

Magic Missile x4: 1d4 + 4 + 3d4 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 4 + (1, 2, 3) + 3 = 16 Trip CMB: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (3) + 9 = 12

He says nothing adding only silence to the din of combat.

Othoe's blood is up, and he has a hard time controlling his temper. The quiet part of his mind says simply, Do it. He takes a 5' step toward Kreed. "I said it was you or me. Looks like it's me"

He bends down, plunging his dagger into the dying man's throat to try and finish the job. His rarely-used dagger dragging on some cartilage and scraping the bone.
Dagger Coupe de Grace: 2d3 ⇒ (3, 3) = 6
He straightens up, a wild look in his eyes and covered in blood. Who's next?

His flaming sphere sits in on the other Forlarren's body and continues to burn, passively awaiting instructions…
Flaming Sphere (fire): 3d6 + 3 ⇒ (6, 4, 2) + 3 = 15 Reflex DC 17 to avoid if he's not dead yet.

Othoe's flaming sphere moves a little in the swarm to try and get both the Forlarren and the swarm (dunno if possible, but they do share a squre) for another round of potential damage…

In the meantime, Othoe takes a 5' step away from Kreed and lights him up with another Magic Missile w/ Toppling Spell targeting Kreed.

Othoe chokes on a sprite as the mass of creatures descends on him. He tries to avoid the worst of it.

Whew!

Othoe struggles to break free from the swarming creatures and backs off. He then casts a Flaming Sphere, hoping to damage the swarm.
Flaming Sphere (fire): 3d6 + 3 ⇒ (4, 5, 2) + 3 = 14 Reflex DC 17 to avoid

He chews and spits out the remains of the sprite in his mouth as he moves.
Fortitude: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 = 24 vs whatever disease the sprite carried

"Kast, get that Fey. He's all yours."

Othoe rushes toward the buildings to get a clearer picture and he does not like what he sees. I must get those Sprite Swarms are we're all doomed. Those are my job. He lays down a Fireball (DC 16) doing 6d6 + 3 ⇒ (3, 5, 5, 4, 3, 3) + 3 = 26. He centers it near the tree so as to get both Sprite Swarms and the piping Satyr in the blast radius. Unfortunately (fortunately?) he also gets Kreed in the blast radius.
SR: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (19) + 6 = 25

"Kreed! Pull your socks up!"

Othoe casts Haste* quickly while the party is still together and before we all rush off to various fights.

He then moves closer to the fight himself and eyes large groups for a Fireball...

"Kids stay back! Take cover over there!" he points to cover - any cover - some distance from the fighting.

* The haste effects the party only. He can only get 6 people in the sweep so the NPCs with us are out of luck.

Othoe looks at Jaryd dryly, "Welcome back. Yes we are rushing to the town already - clearly something is amiss. Did you see anything more from the air?". He pushes on hard for the town.

Watch the fireballs, there will be innocents about.

Othoe straightens up after leaning in to hear the child, "Well then. You'll just put the book back where you found it - right? And we'll sort out what to do from there when your father returns."

If he's not already dead for being an evil undead summoning creep. One can hope.

Othoe rushes to catch up with the others and motions for Javros to do the same.

As they get closer to town and he sees the billowing cloud he exclaims, "Can't they keep it together for five minutes? Now what?!"

That morning, as the party walks along, Othoe thinks long and hard, often falling behind the others and having to be told to keep up. Over lunch, he is sullen and morose as if he's made a decision, and he's not happy with it.

It's what must be done. If we're to protect these children, it can't be just for the moment. Damnation.

That afternoon, Othoe fall into step with Javros.

"That's a dangerous book you have there. Study it's magics and I'll likely be overlooking your grave before long."

He waits for a response, intentionally trying to unnerve the poor child, then continues.

"I will make a deal with you. Give me the book. I'll replace it with a proper spell book and fill it with a few of my own spells as well as those from this book that are... less hostile. I'll even teach you how to cast one or two and get you on the road of being a proper wizard."

He grinds his teeth and stops walking turning to face the child. "Decide now, I'll not make the offer again."

Othoe rises early and prepares his spells as normal. He's pleased that he's going to bed with reserves in the tank - just in case - but as with all addictions, he wants more. More spells, more power.

I need some time to craft more scrolls, and I need more pearls of power for my magic missiles. I need that ring too. Just a little while for that. Argh!

After his preparations are complete, he eats a hearty breakfast and polishes his nails as he cleans himself and his equipment with prestidigitation.

When he's ready he looks to help the others with their preparations for an early departure. Sigh, even the children...

"Let's get these children home shall we? Simon, do you think we'll make it back today?"

Othoe watches the story tellers spin their yarns and keeps to himself when they stray from the reality of what happened.

After all, the reality makes for a much more boring story...

He does however, have nothing to add when eyes rest on him.

"There are others who tell the stories much better than I." he says as he polishes his nails and prestidigitates the last of the dirt from his equipment.

That night, as the children sleep - and just before Othoe's watch - he'll examine this so-called spell book of Javros. He'll cast Detect Magic and treat it carefully as one might a trap.

When he's finished examining it, he'll replace it where he found it and begin his normal watch duties.

Othoe watches poor Edgrin trust Kast in such matters and waits for Nimeon to suggest a path before undertaking it.

Once across, he helps to setup camp for the night.

Othoe, doing his best to keep up on his own short legs, largely ignores the children. Instead he spends most of the trip lost in thought, trying to figure out how to pin down the evil fey. Once we do pin them down, will we be powerful enough to take them out?

He goes over his spell list one more time as he trudges along with the others.

"OK then, so the plan is, we all head to town and prepare to fight the evil fey while you," he gestures to Dorial, "hunt around the woods and then summon us when you've found whom you're seeking. Then we'll meet you where you suggest. Right?"

He turns to Dorial, "Is there anything you'd like from town? I plan to make a few purchases if I can squeeze it in. Can I get you anything at all while I do so?"

Othoe happily ignores the kids now that someone else can watch them and turns to Edgrin, "Do you know where the fey are located? The dark fey that is. We believe they have one of the children yet, and are in some haste to locate him."

"We have no idea where they may be located. They're very crafty, and we could wander the woods for days without sighting them." Othoe frowns at the thought.

We might have to wait for them to strike again, and follow while the trail is hot.

Slippers and shoes... figures.

Othoe discounts the magics and passes them along to others who may have more interest. He helps Simon start a fire with his spark cantrip.

"Can we trust the children to find their own way back?" he asks innocently. "Do we really need to go all the way back to town with them? Perhaps getting them a good start will be enough and then turn to the fey hunt."

When the party has a chance to rest, Othoe will carefully examine the items found, casting Detect Magic and examining them each in turn.

Othoe gestures to the blanket, "That's to keep your eggs warm. Consider it a gift. Now if you'll excuse us, we must be leaving - you should return to your nursery. It's safe now."

Othoe turns to Chrystosm, "Let her go and give her the bag. It's time for us to leave I think."

"It's a simple decision really, but let's be consistent. Frankly, I say let her go and hope they'll be less evil. I'm not a big fan of killing children."

Othoe does nothing this round, but try to convey what he sees.

Following the the party at or near the rear, Othoe hopes we're soon clear of the kobold maze. He continues to watch carefully behind the group for any overtakers.

"Let us make our way out of this rat maze shall we? I think we've found all the children to be found down here." he's careful not to meet Nimeon's gaze.

I wonder where that child is if not here? Very strange. I must have missed something. Or he was sacrificed and disposed of before our arrival. Othoe shudders briefly.

Othoe is more content now that there are people to handle the children we did save, pays more attention to the tunnels and any kobolds that might still have ill-feelings toward the group. He pushes the party to the exit.

Othoe, not liking the look of the altar, calls the children to him and vacates the room… quickly. I'm assuming all he'll manage is a single move as he herds the kids before him out of the room. He's pushy, but not so much that the children fall and slow things down even more.

"Children, come with me! It's time to go, Now!"

I didn't move any marker but my own on the map, but Othoe is pretty insistent that the children come with him.
