Appearance Oriana is a middle-aged kasatha. She wears loose, colourful, pastel clothes, in an attempt to de-emphasize the weight she’s put on with middle-age. She wraps a long scarf around her elongated head, which also covers her mouth and drapes around her shoulders - this is a traditional kasatha gele. She wears soft leather boots, and a matching glove on one hand. She always wears a holy symbol of Talavet under her clothes, and it is precious to her. A dark mote of darkness, the size of a small apple, hovers in the air next to her head. It seems to suck the very light and colour from the room, and many find it uncomfortable to look at. Oriana carries no obvious weapons or armour – her second skin is under her voluminous clothes, and she keeps her emergency pistol in a thigh sheath which she accesses through a false pocket. Her comm and emergency supplies she keeps in another pocket; she carries little else with her. History Oriana has lived on Idari her whole life, serving as a schoolteacher to elementary children, teaching them the basics of the cosmic balance. She lives with her sister and her son, Raseen, whose father abandoned them when he was a baby. Several years ago, Raseen finished his Tempering, and refused to return to life with her and his aunt on Idari. Instead, he spoke of his fascination with new life and new species, and of the many interesting aliens he’d met. He decided to join the StarFinder Society, and spend his life among the stars. Oriana strongly disagreed with his decision; they fought, harsh words were said, and she slapped him. Without another word, Raseen left. For a two years, Raseen was in communication with his aunt (her sister Ilanna), but there has been no word for almost a year. A few rumours have surfaced: that Raseen distinguished himself as a fighter, that he is exploring deep in the void, or that he is dead. Oriana knows he wouldn't make her worry, despite their argument, and she fears the worst. Deeply regretting her hide-bound attitude and harsh words, Oriana has left Idari and is learning to wield the power of the Solarian, which she has taught for years but never really used. She has joined the StarFinder Society in hopes of hearing word of her son. She is aware that he may well be dead, but is determined to follow in his path, that she might understand his decision, and find absolution for her actions towards him. Personality Oriana is a soft-spoken woman, who deeply values tradition, history and balance. She is trying very hard to be open-minded about new races, planets and experiences, hoping that she can fake it until she makes it. She believes strongly in honour and courage. Not overly bright, she understands people more than the technology that surrounds them. She loves nature, and spent a lot of time training children in the Drum’s parks. The circle of life, the balance of life and death, light and dark, are Oriana’s core beliefs. As a follower of Talavet, she believes in the power of storytelling, and will tell a story at any opening. traditions, in progress:
Traditions
Traditional formal greeting - wai. Lower hands palm together, upper palms against the backs of the lower hands. Slight bow. Height of hands indicates level of respect/formality. Keeps a glove on her lower left hand – the hand that slapped her son. It is a punishment and reminder – she cannot remove the glove (except for hygiene) until she has apologized to Raseen, or found proof of his death. Sharing water is an invitation to friendship, and spilling water is an insult. Spitting is a direct challenge. Keeping a plant alive in her quarters is a reminder of the sacredness of life. She doesn’t always keep the same one, but always purchases one in a new home. Always starts a meal with an invocation to the cosmos. Third glass of alcohol (when consumed) is always Kasatha blue. She won't drink a third glass if that is not available. Only eats fruit and nuts after sundown. Bows towards the sun at upon waking to honour the homeworld of Kasath, which is dying. Hour of silence on the last day of every month to honour the Time of Silence (the Gap). Wears a Talavat holy symbol – carved from Kasath rock and worn on a woven grass necklace. Tells a tale or asks for one after the evening meal.
