Trebuchet's were actually great for firing into forests. They could actually do significant damage to forests, etc. Especially against things like to hide such as the Chernasardo rangers. And with the Trebuchet being an indirect seige weapon it is very effective.

We are doing Gestalt

Pchela - Entobian - Unchained Monk Menhir Monk/ Entomancer (Thunderscape)
Halt - Shadow Fey - Ranger / Legendary Fighter (legendary games)
Aerona - Dhampir - Occultist / Armiger (Spheres of Might)
Tathserath - Elf - Arcanist / Spiritualist
Krieger - Dwarf - Soldier / Musketeer (Both from Shadows Over Vathak)

Our group likes 3rd party sources.

An easy method of involving the Mwangi:
Sargava = Molthune; (Chelish state, militaristic colony)
Mwangi = Nirmathas; (Nature-esque still)
Hobgoblins are still hobgoblins - nothing changed there;
Replace Chernasardo Rangers with Hellknight Order of the Coil;
The blight still works in the Mwangi.

For this one, i highly recommend waiting on the player's guide. The reason being is the first part of it has roles that the party's "handler" gives and the traits correspond to it.

I'm running this and one of my players is playing a dwarven Bard with the Animal Speaker archetype. He chose rams as his first animal and I allowed him to start with 3 of them already trained. (He was using them as pack animals bringing trade from the dwarves to Phaendar.) They started the invasion at the Taproot Inn. The Dwarf was concerned for his ram friends as they were being stalled at The Phaendar Trading Company's animal pens. So that's where the dwarf headed to next. There are supposed to be 3 hobgoblins in the Trade Yard. Instead, I had 2 of them in the animal pens in the process of killing off the animals and the other standing guard/ directing. The rams were standing together defensively and the hobgoblins were approaching them as the players arrived. It provided some tension for the dwarven bard while still allowing him to keep his animal friends if they were successful. As the Pcs approached, the hobgoblins focused on them instead of the animals.

Very nice. I am DMing it for one group and a player for another group. I am teaching DMing, but my character is a Leshy Warden druid gestalted with Green Knight Cavalier (we have been doing gestalt forever). It's pretty fun. :)

Campaign Outline Spoiler:

Book 1 - Party flees Phaendar and becomes a group of survivors trying to reorganize.
Book 2 - the party searches for the chernasardo rangers and defends the chernasardo region
Book 3 - the party defends the city of longshadow
Book 4 - the party goes to Kraggodan to investigate the onyx key and they prove the ironfang legion stole the key and not Molthune. The PC's ask for Kraggodan's help and they tell them no because of the seige, and they don't have the resources. They tell them that they fey may help if the Queen of the Fangwood were to be helped.
Book 5 - Rescue the fey queen, who offers her assistance to the PC.
Book 6 - war council (Longshadow, Chernasardo Rangers, Kragoddan, Fairy Land, the Capital City, and a suprise organization shows up) and then they go after the onyx citadel.

Most animals that were there actually escaped. The party members will be doing survival checks to recover the animals for provision points. We had 22 NPC's and after the first week animals outnumbered people. So I would say more animals managed to fled then even the population.

Is it possible to redeem in Ironfang Invasion?

Yes, Paizo has created great rules on redemption. The most they can make these LE hobgoblins be is LN. However, they will be enemies and using druidic magic, you can do a combination of redemption plus reincarnation. That way they don't suffer from the stigma. As evidenced in Wrath of the Righteous even an evil outsider can be.

Major Spoiler:
Azaersi can be redeemed as well as one of antagonists in continuing the campaign and she can be convinced to just make the Onyx Citadel the kingdom of hobgoblins.

Is the Fangwood Forest dominately:
Sparse, Medium or Dense?

Getting ready to do book 2 and need to know more about the environment that combat is going to happen in. The Azlanti series that we will be doing next is obviously aquatic, so I was wondering if Paizo was trying to utilize environment rules. Please let me know :)

Are you running it with the militia system? I am about to start doing the militia in my session tomorrow, one of the possibilities for actions is to use Spellcasters to raise a dead party member. You need a level 3 Spellcaster "unit" in your militia to use it, though, and I am not 100% sure how early you can get that. There are some cool options there, I recommend checking it out!

Pretty early actually. Just need the funds and take the action to train. Militia level 3 or 4 is the soonest you can do it.

A low bar, but it certainly is.

Playing a shifter in iron fang invasion and out damaging most party members. Shifter's at low levels are extremely dangerous and even more deadly at higher levels. Never underestimate a class.

As far as this one, i just love old spice. How many pathfinder player's gonna get some old spice just because of this class.

IronFang Spoiler:

1 Rova – the fall of Phaendar
– Phaendar fell to the Ironfang legion and the party rescued as many survivors as possible. From the Inn we rescued Jet (Human Aristocrat); a warrior 1, aristocrat 1, commoner 1 (2) as well as Aubrin the Green (Cleric 3, Ranger 3). Pchela went back and saved another commoner as well as two aristocrats. We then went to the chapel, rescued Rhyna (adept 2), warrior 1 (2), adept 1; commoner (4); At the shop, we rescued Lirosa and Taidel (half elf warrior 1), as well as Kining BLondebeard (dwarf expert 2). We met an earth elemental that Aerona named Tenten, who was trying to put out the fire. We were unable to save the alchemist in the alchemist shop but were able to save a 1st level adept, and a 1st level commoner. We destroyed the Bridge of Phaendar with Stump Remover. The entire party was severely wounded from this. We also learned Aerona isn’t healed by positive energy.

2 Rova -12 Rova – Survival of the Survivors
- We established a camp. The below were responsible for different duties
Aerona – Scouting
Pchela – Handle Animal
Halt – Survival
Krieger – Tent Building + Lookout
Found Locations :
Dire Wolf Cavern
Wasp Hive
People Encountered:
Edran the Spy
A Wight
Centaur

13 Rova – 14 Rova – Day Before the storm
Placed Aristocrats, Adepts and commoners in the Dire wolf den.
Warriors went with us as well as beasts. While enroute to the great caves, we encountereed some hobgoblins and find Kining’s headless corpse as well as a bounty notice. One of the hobgoblins satchel contained the head of our fallen dwarven experts head. We then moved forward and met a centaur whom we ended up having to slay. We found the shack containing a wight, outside the house was an evil cat that hurt us more then anything. We left the warriors and commoners here and we rested up before moving forward.

15 Rova – Dawn before the Storm
We traveled to the large caverns we saw and found it to be a trogolodyte cavern that used to belong to derro’s that worshipped the Xiomorns. Pchela met and tamed Monty the Monitor LIzard. We found a strange Oracle’s Fog as well as managed to tame a crystalline creature.

16 Rova – Day of Meditation
We meditate in the mists of the Oracle’s Fog.
Pchela – Sees a feyish woman who has one hostage. Pchela must choose between her father or her mother. Though she staggers the mist when the mist asks Pchela what she desired. Which was the greatest maple syrup.
Aerona – She saw something and learned she is a dhampir.
Krieger – Saw that his commander was alive, but not the same as he was before.
Tanterath – Was out smoking – Will get details later.

17 Rova – 7 Lamashan – Home of the Maple Leaf Hemlock Banner
We rested and met Navi. Aerona begins developing new powers and starts hunting in the night. We meet the snirfneblin Navi and her feyish acquantance. -Pchela begins calling vermin (Giant Bee, Giant Bee Queen, Giant Dragon Fly, Stegocentipede, Giant Black Widow Spider). Pchela has the Queen and the Giant bee begin forming a hive. Aerona gets found out by Tantherath, and he begins joining her. We meet two people, one is Arbalak and the other is a priest of invictus and asmodeus. The party celebrates but is poisoned with love potion and all craziness ensues. From the Darkness we meet another group, a monkey man named Kuza whom tries to be nice to the dire wolf but ends up getting bitten. At the end of the week, Navi returns with our purchased goods.

8 Lamashan
Aerona and Tantherath get ambushed by Scarvinius in the night and the party comes to help.

9 Lamashan – Prepare for Battle
Halt performs a scouting mission to see their activity. The party prepares for the upcomming battle.

10 Lamashan – The Battle Begins
Halt doesn’t return as planned. The party advances the plan for the Hemlock Offensive. We fortunately had no casualties, however Aerona was severely wounded in the battle. Tenten almost fell in the conflict however was saved due to the misfortune that Scarvinius was experiencing due to a Pugwampi.

11 – 21 Lamashan
The party gets a one week reprieve. On 11 Lamashan, Aerona saw the ghost of Scarvinius. krieger seems to be changed. Navi receives another order for goodies. Pchela begins training two of the Npc’s as her apprentice in the ways of the entomancer. Lucrecia and Pacoste. Arbalak is going to sell in the fey markets and gather news of the Fangwood. Wotan wants a Lesser Metamagic Rod of Widen Spell (3000 gp) so he can use widen plant growth to fortify the surrounding area. Pchela wants 1666.67 gp in crafting materials. Hello Mighty T Rex,

James, while I am sure you may have covered this in some form before, could you please give your opinion, in the way Demogorgon, Orcus, Graz'zt, Pazuzu and to a lesser extent Fraz-Urb’luu, where able to style themselves ‘prince’ above the other demon ‘lords’ in earlier editions of the game, on Golarion, which of the Abyssal lords could conceivably, by might or hubris, be elevated to that position?

None. We don't use the concept of a "demon prince" in Pathfinder.

Once a demon lord gains enough power to step up to the next tier of power, she or he becomes a deity rather than a demigod. So far that's only happened once, with Lamashtu, but it will very likely happen a second time soon with Nocticula ascending to the role of a chaotic neutral goddess of midnight, artists, and outcasts.

This might be very helpful for you :) Gotta love the Ask James Jacobs Discussion :)

No. Especially since I have no idea who Ruithvein is and had to do a search on the wiki to figure it out... (to the extent that I totally missed including him in Book of the Damned... he's way too stealth for his own good); if he were Golarion's "Dracula" I would have known. Furthermore, Ruithvein is an infernal duke, not a vampire, so he's not a Dracula anyway.

The closest thing we've come to having a character directly inspired by Dracula would have been Kazavon, and even then, he's more inspired by Vlad the Impaler, not Dracula.

The FIRST vampire was Urgathoa, in any event.

Holy Moly!!!!

That is mind blowing :) I am glad I asked :)

have a questions about the vampires of Golarion.

Is Zura the first Vampire? If so did she create the Strigoi that came to Golarion that created the other 4 strains aka Nosferatu, Moroi, Jiang-Shi and the Vetala?

Is Ruithvein the Dracula of Golarion? And is Zura effectively Carmilla? So many questions :)

Also, is Runelord Sorshen a Vampire seeing how she created the blood pits in curse of the crimson throne? I see all the abilities are related to Zura and I was wondering if there was a connection.

After completing all books I have to admit that I love this adventure path. It has a lot of strengths, and is very neat to play a ranger in. We had one that took his favored enemy towards goblinoids and it has benefited him greatly. Every time he took favored enemy it was based on one creature he encountered. The player's guide was very influential as well. I recommend this for any new player as well, as this will help gauge how much your players can handle.

I'm looking for people who have played or GM'd at least two of the following:

  • Curse of the Crimson Throne
  • Iron Gods
  • Strange Aeons

I'm quite interested in all three of these to run as a roll20 campaign, but I need to chose one obviously. ;-)

Please reply if you've played two or all three with:
- What did you like about the AP's?
- What did you not like about the AP's?
- Why did you like one over the other (two)?

Strange Aeons - My preference of choice. The first books introduction is frightening and is easily pasteable into the Roll20 and allows for fun. It also has multiple chances of facing a reoccuring enemy, a Denizen of Leng with a dire hatred. I highly recommend introducing the sanity system as well for this one.

Iron Gods - This is my second preference, as Technology is a new system. Having magic vs. technology is pretty snavvy and they will encounter more memorable people.

Curse of the Crimson Throne - The final books artifact is awesome, and the final encounter is extremely terrifying. The one thing that I would do with this one is exercise extreme caution as there are not that many new items in the Curse of the Crimson Throne. Though they will be dealing with the Red Mantis Assassins.

Mr. Stephens,

I would like for you guys to do some progress level things. I think that is something that is up your alley as I have read almost of Rogue Genius Games materials and I love it. I loved that both RGG and Everyman's games did a massive bundle package on rpgnow as well. :)

Would be pretty cool if that was how you increased damage, etc. For example a PL 6 ship's damage reduction could be overcome by PL 7. A PL 7 ship's damage reduction could be overcome by PL 8.

Starfinder would be PL 6 so that would give your designers PL 7 and PL 8 at a minimum to design and play around with and I believe this would be a very very popular third party product as folks loved technology. Most of the fan base I believe for Starfinder are those that enjoyed Iron Gods.

Pathfinder Adventure Path, Companion Subscriber

Mythic is similar to Epic rules and can be overwhelming for some DM's to gauge the power level.

Mythic itself isn't broken, players can just break the mythic. In my group each path has set abilities (player's can't choose the abilities) however they instead can use the mythic feat to take an ability that they didn't have. This thus far has been very successful (we have done 6 mythic adventures thus far) and it makes it easy for me to apply mythic to my conversions.

They can be found on my campaign setting obsidian portal page found here.

Pathfinder Adventure Path, Companion Subscriber

They are still prone to injuries.

Money can be used to restore their missing limbs, etc for spellcasting services as well.

Paying to cast raise dead for their captain, for example. Who fell in combat. Treat these hobgoblins not as monsters but adventurers/armies that gave up morality to be successful. That's how I would view it. They could also use the money to purchase magical weapons, as having a slave do it would result in a cursed item.

It is very easy to re-adapt rappan athuk for space.
Just replace Demons with Aliens.

Rappan Athuk spoiler:
You can replace the Ravager with Cthulhu, and the Ravager's spawn with star spawn.

You can also adapt Slumbering Tsar. Our favorite shoddy town filled with oogly evils can be a space town, with a lovely hotel that my players call "Hotel Poopsylvania". While the Desolation is a Destroyed planet where the largest chunk is the lost city of Tsar.

I believe that would only apply if they were ramming. Then again if i were to design it, the penalty to hit would come from the weapon that was firing :) Just to make it easy.

Here's one that I made for our group. It worked really well.

http://paizo.com/threads/rzs2u6wy?Kingmaker-In-Space#1

Pathfinder Adventure Path, Companion Subscriber

For those who have been wanting to do "Kingmaker in Space" our group has been doing that to determine that we divided the charges by 10 for reactors and by 5 for the laboratories to determine the BP value (limit of one reactor per city district). Unlike several buildings, reactors and labs are not upgradeable.

Fission Reactor - 100 BP (4 lots) 1000 charges
Fusion Reactor - 50 BP (2 lots) 500 charges
Geothermal Reactor - 20 BP (1 lot) 200 charges
Graviton Reactor - 80 BP (4 lots) 800 charges
Solar Generator - 5 BP (1 lot) 50 charges

Laboratories work the same way except they are divided by 5:
Cybernetics Lab - 20 BP (1 lot) 100 charges
Graviton Lab - 50 BP (2 lots) 250 charges
Medical Lab - 4 BP (1 lot) 20 charges
Military Lab - 20 BP (1 lot) 100 charges
Nanotech Lab - 30 BP (2 lots) 150 charges
Production Lab - 10 BP (1 lot) 50 charges
Robotics Lab - 40 BP (2 lots) 200 charges
Spaceship Lab - 90 BP (4 lots) 450 charges

Each generator provides power for an entire district. For example, the new kingdom district has a Solar Generator. It can power either 2 medical labs or 1 production lab. A fission reactor can support a robotics lab (200), a graviton lab (250), a production lab (50), a cybernetics lab (100), a medical lab (20), a military lab (100), a nanotech lab (150). All excess power can be utilized to charge items, etc.
