King of Korvosa

"Sounds like the kind of place I'd like to visit someday. And establishing an outpost of humans in so hostile a land is admirable. As much as I'd like to spend the afternoon here with you drinking ale and trading stories, my duty calls."

Odric nods to Gaius and addresses Grough Rumblestone once more, "Please show these fine folks to the best rooms at the Keg & Eagle while Gaius and Ferox work on Valiant Hamilton."

Odric stands and departs, leaving the group in the throne room to finish their repast. Sharp ears will hear the King tell a well dressed functionary to see about sending some capital to Trunau as a gesture of solidarity to bolster the human settlement...

To Morkeleb, "...And you're positive I cant accompany them back to their fight with these foul worms? I could have The Kegerator and some iron rations brought up in just a few minutes..."

King of Korvosa

"Ah! Good man!"

Odric leans back and smiles broadly.

"Tell me more about Truneau. An outpost village in the midst of hostile Orcs and Giants? What is it like?"

King of Korvosa

"No no no! The ambiance is illusory... the Ale is my own special brew!"

Odric turns to Morkeleb, seated to his right, "How can we expedite valiant Hamilton's vengeance? Perhaps Ferox could help?"

King of Korvosa

Odric fairly leaps from the throne, approaches the party and clasps hands early with each. He insistently guides them to the rear corner of the throne room, and as they each take a place around the table, the lighting changes. It becomes dim and rosy, the smells of a tavern waft through the air.

Fear not, these are simply illusions... but aren't they grand?!" Odric addresses Vael as they two sit nearly elbow to elbow.

"They insist I spend my time taking supplicants and conducting the business of state here in the throne room, so I decided to bring a little cheer to the old place, eh?"

Once all are seated, the King nods, and the upturned cups are flipped and charged with an incredibly rich, malty ale. As the servants step back, the King stands with his cup.

"To my guests! And to their fallen comrade! My solemn word that before the sun rises over the Jeggare, the valiant sacrifice he made will be a fond memory, and your Ka-Tet will be made whole."

The king bears a solemn mein, for he too has lost shield mates in battle. With a steely gaze, he lifts his cup high, "To Hamilton!'

After he drains the cup, he flips it upside down, and slams the Upturned Cup to the table.

After everyone is once again seated, the King asks the group in general with an intensity and good humor that make the assembled adventurers almost forget they are in the throne room of the King of Korvosa, "Well? Lets hear some bloody details!"

King of Korvosa

The King sits on an understated throne, but he is making use of almost none of it as he is clearly brimming with interest and excitement. He is a large man, physicality exudes from every pure. Despite his advancing age, this man looks fit enough to wrestle a minotaur. His crown sits upon his brow, and the mantle draped over his shoulders is quite kingly, but the rest of his appearance is at odds with the effect.

King Odric is wearing what look like rough hunting clothes, or perhaps sparring gear? His iron gray hair curls about his ears and down the back of his neck is damp with sweat. His scarred visage and calloused hands betray him as a man of action as opposed to the perfumed fop one might expect in a throne room.

"I hope the formalities have all been properly observed... I'm terrible about it I know." the King nods to Harold in a silent acknowledgment.

A commotion behind the party draws Odric's attention.

Before he went to join his aging but still beautiful bride in their chamber, King Odric thought of his Kingdom, really a Republic now. Korvosa had grown powerful, prosperous, and she enjoyed a peace borne of strength and respect from her neighbors. The people largely governed themselves. His sons and his daughter were nearly grown, and were good-hearted patriots who loved their city as much as their parents did.

As was his habit, Odric considered the business of the day and reflected on what he could have done to have better served his city. He thought through what he faced tomorrow, and looked forward to the day with a weary but genuine anticipation. He missed the days of high adventure, but he knew in his heart he had done his piece and done it well.

He sat and stared into the embers for a spell, then stood to go into the bedchamber to crawl into bed beside his Queen. He lifted the spartan crown from his brow and set it on the black velvet cushion of his chair.

There it lay, glimmering in the dying light, as the King slipped across the darkened room.

    King of Korvosa

In the months that followed King Odric’s coronation, there were quite literally hundreds of tasks to undertake, thousands of problems to solve, and not nearly enough time to attend to all. The crushing workload supported Odric’s idea that distributing the power of Korvosa to the citizenry and the nobility in some form of parliamentary system would make rule possible, and help to buffer the danger that some future monarch would take the crown and bring the city to ruin, as Ileosa had.

After some initial friction with Gaius, Odric realized the importance of accelerating the transition from a single, all-powerful ruler to a more representative form of government. With the sage counsel of Morkeleb as a guidepost, and the subtle but undeniable distaste Gaius held at the idea of a monarch, Odric made significant progress to empower a House of Nobles and a House of Commons toward self-rule. He reserved only the Royal Prerogative in leading Korvosa in time of War, and in matters of Diplomacy in the region.

King Odric the Stout retained Master Sandor as an emissary of Korvosa, and over the years, the dwarven smith performed admirably with his unique blend of no-nonsense folksy wisdom and his steel-edged ferocity bringing allies and geopolitical foes into alignment with the city’s best interests.

With a subtle influence, King Odric relied on the Savored Sting Gaius to keep the ambitions of those who sought to undermine the transition of power from a concentrated few to the populace at large. The impact of Blackjack, and later of Yellow Jacket were invaluable to the cause.

With Thorgrym ensuring the Sable Company was rebuilt, the Guard was up to snuff, and the most humble sons and daughters of Korvosa had a voice and a chance at justice, Odric felt comfortable that his mandate to represent the small and voiceless of the city was met in spades.

Ferox and Morkeleb acted as liaisons to their respective organizations, and their alliances via marriage to extra-planar beings came in handy on several occasions.

King Odric married within the year, further solidifying his power over the nobility. His bride was a stunningly charismatic and beautiful Lady of one of the most powerful noble families. She was chosen from a host of likely candidates not for her charms though, but because she was as reform-minded as King Odric, and shared his impish irreverence for nobility, royalty, and birthrights. Her love for King Odric grew, as did his love for her. Together they worked tirelessly in service to the city they were entrusted to safeguard.

    -

He had always imagined a statue of himself when he dreamt of the great deeds and noble fights he might one day be credited with. Those drunken nights bragging without cause in the dens of iniquity were lifetimes ago - quite literally in Morkeleb and Grym’s cases. The tales of greatness he had told in those bars faded in his memory. They had been replaced by the heroism of his friends, the dedication of the People of Korvosa to build a better city after the usurper’s reign of terror.

The statue he had always imagined, of himself in battle regalia with sword in hand staring out over the water from the heights was unveiled in a subdued ceremony with just King Odric, his family, close friends, and a few of the officers from the Stout Legion. Captain Oso had commissioned it, and the troops of the Legion had funded its construction under the watchful eye of Master Sandor.

The statue had a certain peace to it. The expression was watchful, as though Odric was poised to step in front of those in his charge to defend them if the need arose, but it also somehow captured the satisfaction of knowing those he loved were safe, for now. With one foot forward, the bright marble gleamed in the morning sun, and the smallest detail of Odric’s kit was carefully etched into the stone. His dragon-blood stained armor, his War Kilt, and of course, the mighty Kegerator were faithfully reproduced in the living stone.

With a mischievous grin, Sandor leaned in and asked the Queen if she wanted to see a late addition to the larger-than-life piece, that the master Dwarven craftsman had added in the darkest hours of the night, several hours before the beautiful dawn the little group was enjoying.

”Lass, if’n you wouldn’t mind, you’re the only one who kin vouch fer the accuracy of me work” the scarred face cracked into a healthy belly laugh as Sandor made use of his newly restored voice.

At the Queen’s quizzical look, Sandor beckoned her forward. He contorted his head and shoulders to turn upwards to peer up the bottom of the war kilt and pointed upward with a renewed guffaw. The Queen joined his rich bellowing laugh with a snicker of her own that soon spread through the group. As laughter pealed across the morning sky over Korvosa, Sandor quipped, ”Even in a sculpture of this scale lad, Yer swinging a wee dagger compared to a proper dwarven broadsword!”

    King of Korvosa

When Neolandus asked "Who is to be Korvosa's monarch now?", despite the misgivings of his companions Odric boldly stepped forward. He was confident in his vision for the future of Korvosa, and steadfast in his desire to steer the city in the direction of peace, prosperity, and virtue.

”Though I am but a poor son of Korvosa, I love this city and I submit myself to service as her King, if she’ll have me. I’m prepared to fight for the privilege to serve as monarch, and I have little doubt as to the outcome. I will not spill blood in this endeavor though, I know the wounds that steering that course would tear in the city’s soul… and I love her too dearly to let that happen.”

Odric’s posture had a nobility to it that few had seen before. His shield mates, brothers of dozens upon dozens of life or death struggles had seen it on occasion, but Odric had made it his habit to dress his persona in the foolish antics he so enjoyed. The gravity of his proposal made discarding the trappings of his youth an easy decision. His shoulders square, his back straight, Odric looked at Neolandus as a King would - with regal grace, an imposing inner strength, and compassion for his loyal subject. The nobleman who had been defacto ruler of the city saw relief from his burden as a drowning man saw a bit of driftwood.

    The man simply nodded.

”Neolandus,” Odric said softly, but loud enough for all assembled to hear, ”you have done well in your duty to this city. Your service will not go unrewarded, and your wisdom is a commodity I will need in the coming days, months and years.” Odric gripped the older man’s slight shoulder, smiled at him warmy and nodded his approval.

In a louder, more commanding voice, Odric continued ”Summon the nobility, the leaders of the guilds, a representative for Abadarians and,” Odric turned to Morkeleb for his final invitation, ”one from The Academy.”

Within an hour’s time, Odric could hear the murmurs and excited chatter through the antechamber door, as the assembled elite personages of Korvosa’s upper echelon discussed what could be happening. When he received the nod from Grough Rumblestone that all requested parties were assembled, Odric passed the nod to Harold.

So, here's my thought: I'd like to have a cohesive and awesome denouement. In order to achieve this, I suggest that each player write a "send off" for what their post campaign days look like. In order for everyone to be happy, I suggest that we allow each of you to take license with the setting (within reason.) This includes something like Odric being king, Morkeleb running the Acadamae, etc. I'll respond in kind with something. If each person writes in such a way that it doesn't tread on the vision of others, we're in good shape.

King Odric will allow it. ;-)

    King of Korvosa

presumably this conversation takes place back in the Sunken Queen...

"Ferox, I appreciate your candor as well, and I accept your praise for my skill as an adventurer and warrior with humility, coming from you who have proven so resourceful and forceful yourself."

There is no time of flattery in Odric's voice, simply appreciation and admiration.

"The point you raised about corruption in the form of a monarch being equally likely as in an elected figure is true. I see it as a fundamental flaw in the system, where power is concentrated in the head of state; it is a roll of the dice each time power transitions as to whether that individual and therefore all the power of the state is used for good or for ill. My thought in proposing a parliament is to diffuse that concentration of power, to act as a bulwark against a reckless or evil monarch. Not a new form of government, but an addition to Korvosa's tradition of monarchy."

Odric eyes the Abadarian and says with absolute sincerity, I'd appreciate your support, but even without it I swear to you these things: I will not allow a civil war to engulf our home; my goal is a stable and proseperous Korvosa. I will not allow my ambition to overtake my prudence or my love for Korvosa. My reign will be just and will be remembered for strengthening the city, not destroying it. Finally, I will endeavor to lead in such a way as to earn your support in this role, just as I earned your respect upon the field of battle."

Ferox, Odric will abdicate a claim to the belt in favor of the headband... no one else has asked after either.

    King of Korvosa

Odric is about to make his bid to the assembled dudes for his kingship. The "problem" is that I need to level him to 16, then to 17. I intend to do at least 1 as a bard, and I want to use perform: oratory here. I would ask we don't advance the plot too much past this point until I do, but it isn't a one man game. I'll have some time to level him this evening.

    King of Korvosa

Odric stops within hailing distance from the gates and calls loudly, "Commander Odric the Stout of the Korvosan Guard requests admittance to the city for himself and the companions of the Upturned Cup!"

Upon entry, Odric dispatched a runner to summon Harold the Herald to him.

Once inside the Castle, Odric will summon the luminaries discussed.

    King of Korvosa

Odric looks over the assembled treasure with an appraising eye. After Morkeleb explains what each item is and what it does, the warrior expresses an exceptionally keen interest in the following items:

  • belt of physical might +6 (Str, Dex)
  • boots of teleportation
  • headband of mental prowess +4 (Int, Wis)
  • pale green prism ioun stone

And he would be pleased to acquire these items:

  • amulet of natural armor +5
  • eyes of charming

The Crimson Throne is cursed, and maybe the lesson from all of our journeys is that we're better off without it. The Magistrates, Arbiters, and Peerage Review do most of the real work. All the Monarchy has done is die without a clear successor again and again. Oh, and this most recent lawful ruler tried to sacrifice the entire city to fuel the resurrection of an undead horror. I think it's time for a change, don't you?

"I appreciate your candor Gaius, but I have no intention of sitting on that throne again. Been there and done that, and I didn't find it too comfortable. I would rule like I've built the Keg & Eagle, fairly and methodically, with an emphasis on the product.

"In the case of rulership, the product is a prosperous and peaceful city. But like my brews, this city will have a punch. I would improve our defenses and military might to dissuade Cheliaxian ambitions.

"I can claim a friendship with one of the most respected Abadarians in the city, and ask Ferox for support of the bank.

"Although he hasn't said it, I suspect Morkeleb will find himself in the Academae if only for speaking engagements, but his friendship can only support the city I would lead.

"I would ask Grym to take a leading role in the city as a guardian of the downtrodden, perhaps forming a new orgamization entirely to compliment the Guard and the revitalized [insert name of hippogryph sky knight guys here].

"Sandor may not be interested, but if I stepped into the role of king, I would turn over the Keg & Eagle, as well as Stout Manor to him. The forge and smithy there would certainly produce the most incredible work to fill it's armories. I'd ask in return only that a table near the fire, big enough to accommodate our friends, be made available on occasion. That, and a frosty beverage now and again.

"If I were to lead the city, Gaius, you would see a true leader. One who has been in the gutter, who has suffered at the hands of the powerful and prevailed. With that experience in my memory, I would truly dedicate my life to service. Service to this city, and a dedication to each other, has brought us through literal hellfire alive. You would see a king who comes from the common folk and who supports them.

"I mentioned before I advocate a much reduced role for the Monarch... I'd propose a parliament to ensure the laws and path of this city comport with the interests of her people, both noble and common.

"Finally, I hope it goes without saying I wouldn't attempt a city-wide blood sacrifice...

    King of Korvosa

Odric's proposal is to bampf to just outside the city gates and walk to the castle, walk up the front steps, walk in like he owns the place and either summon or find Kroft, Sabina, Neolandus, Captain Oso, and Blackjack/Vencarlo

    King of Korvosa

"Before we do, I'd like to either have your support or at the very least know you wouldn't actively oppose me." Odric eyes Gaius and looks to Ferox for his input...

"I think perhaps our arrival should be on foot. Perhaps we teleport outside the walls and walk to the castle."

    King of Korvosa

Guys, I will make certain leveling decisions depending on the reaction to Odric's royal aspirations. So if you want to weigh in, please do! I'm thinking about dipping into Cavalier, Bard, or possibly War Priest.

I know it doesn't make a whole heck of a lot of difference in the game at this point, but I'm excited about it nonetheless. :-)

    King of Korvosa

Yeah man... anything we can do? If you guys move to DC for work, we're hiring :)

    King of Korvosa

DM - Are there other treasures to be had in the Sunken Queen? We can take 20 throughout since we are camping here tonight and teleporting home in the morning.

and are you SUUUUURE there aren't about 10,616 XP worth of baddies in here somewhere?

    King of Korvosa

With plans to teleport back to Korvosa tomorrow, the Upturned Cup sets about the task of clearing and looting the Sunken Queen.

Ooc- is it safe to assume we can move about in here without risking combat? If so let's fast forward through a thorough search of all rooms.

Odric empties the party's portable hole And stares at the treasure inside the crystal globe. He asks the others to stand back and tries to smash the crystal with his Earthbreaker.

    King of Korvosa

"What are your plans Morkeleb? Any thoghts?"

Odric sort of assumed Morkeleb would magic himself up a spooky tower somewhere and cast spells in a dark room at the top or something.

Then am idea dawned on him, excitedly he suggested, "what about challenging the defenses of the Academy next year? I would love to see them fend off a hero of the Upturned Cup!"

Odric makes a couple vaguely insulting faux magical gestures and nods eagerly at his friend.

    King of Korvosa

Odric clears his throat uncomfortably, seeking his shieldmates' attention.
Once the assembled members of the Upturned Cup turned to face him he began, haltingly at first but with growing confidence as he went on,

"Gents, I dont think it's any secret I've been eyeing this for a bit, truthfully ever since the Harrow Deck put the idea of the Throne before me, but in the aftermath of all this the city we love is bound to be in turmoil. I'd be honored if you'd back me in an effort to ascend the throne to heal our city and build it into a prosperous metropolis.

Eek, I almost said to 'Make Korvosa Great Again'

"Morkeleb, that's why I want to word the Sending as I dictated earlier. I want to build a bit of dominance over the current elites into the scenario."

"As I said, I feel like I'm called to the task, and I'm a little embarrassed to ask your support in this. I know I'm no better than any of you, and I'm not putting on airs. I also know that what we have accomplished as a group was on account of all of our efforts.
Truly I'm humbled to be associated with each and every one of you."

"What do you say, friends? Is this something you would support? Would you counsel me against the idea for any reason? And if so, I'd listen to your thoughts with an open mind. I've learned to trust you all implicitly, if I've learned nothing else. Even you, Bucho."

Odric grins down at the brindle dog and roughs his ears with affection. He waits respectfully for his brothers to respond.

    King of Korvosa

Odric says, "I met an old wizard once, an adventurer with many summers of troll slaying and goblin hunting behind him. Over drinks he told me that if you put an object in a bag of holding, then put the bag of holding into a portable hole, the item is destroyed. Is that true?"

Odric eyes the fangs as he asks...

    King of Korvosa

Odric proposes for the sending, after being told what the parameters are:

"usurper slain, upturned cup victorious - danger gone. secretly prepare treasury for large deposit.
From Odric - Tomorrow we return, I'll summon korvosan elites to discuss future."

    King of Korvosa

"Let's send the news to Kroft and make our way home tomorrow. I think we should explore this place more, make sure there are no more denizens of the nine hells, horrible traps, or crazy engines of evil, and consider ways to seal it."

    King of Korvosa

Odric also considers the vast treasure held within the Sunken Queen, and polls the group for suggestions. Any means, magical or mundane, are on the table, but Odric is emphatic that the treasury of the city be returned.

    Minus expenses of course.

    King of Korvosa

Odric listens as Morkeleb discusses, almost via an internal monologue, what he thinks occurred from the standpoint of magic.

"...I believe that the whole point the Queen was doing with this ritual was to bring Kazavon back, and meld his soul with hers. She had one of the relics, artifacts really, that belonged to Kazavon (the Fangs) and that would have given her some measure of control over him--which is at least one of the reasons he didn't simply enter the world and consume her. The ritual was complete when we got there, so he was coming no matter what--but without the soul-melding piece since we slew Ileosa....

Odric interrupts, "What of the remaining relics? And although Grym sundered the crown, the fangs themselves remain. Can we destroy them somehow?"

    King of Korvosa

Odric hacks once again with a mighty slash at the spot where the dread foe was just an instant earlier.

    1d20 + 21 ⇒ (5) + 21 = 26

While his swing drives forward, Odric closes his eyes in supplication to... whoever might be listening (of good gods, that is) and hopes for the best. With a brilliant flash nearly blinding him, his blade meets nothing but air.

He was SURE it was a solid swing, perhaps the dragon had employed mirror images as the usurper had?

Risking a peek, Odric sees... nothing. Baffled, he looks around to see more of nothing. His friends seem equally bewildered, and it slowly dawns on him that the trial is over.

Once he is sure his shieldmates are cared for, he sits down on the tilted floor and cracks open a special sealed horn of his finest ale that he had been saving for just such a moment. Wordlessly he passes the horn around and stares in wonder at the empty room.

Once his cup is returned to him, he raises it, inverted, in a silent salute.

    King of Korvosa

Odric's fate will be intertwined with the city. I want to play heading back, and I want to spend like 5 more years on option 2 before we do option 3.

    Round the Eighth

With the Usurper still spewing blood in Serithiel's wake, Odric turns toward the source of the most foreboding rumble he's heard since the regrettable Cheliaxian Chili Incident turned Sandor's guts to Otyugh stew.

Odric sighs in resignation. In his heart he knows he's good for two things: Brewing beer, and trading horrific wounds with fiends beyond his wildest drunken exaggerations... And Odric finds himself without hops, malt, or barley. He does however hold the mighty Kegerator in his massive hands.

With infinite trust in his mates of the Upturned Cup, Odric flies towards what appears to be death incarnate. As he nears the dragon, Odric torques his body to the left, his arms bulging and the Kegerator nearly behind him. When he unwinds his body, his shoulders and hips pivot with an unbelievable amount of power, slicing the massive blade across what he hopes is a tender bit of the coalescing dragon.

    King of Korvosa

Odric flies towards the Usurper, hurtling theough the air over the shimmering magical wall to take a position just south of her, floating just over Sandor's head.

    King of Korvosa

    Round the Fifth

Odric sees the gathered force surrounding the true false queen... he has felt the assaults upon his will and knows if he were to be dominated he would wreak havoc among his allies in the southeast corner.

He runs north, and leaps into the air, activating his Boots of flight midstride to hurdle the shimmering rainbow wall.

"Morkeleb, back away from me with a quickness!"

As Odric reaches the apogee of his leap, like a raptor he stoops toward the false false queen. The Kegerator slices downward in concert with Odric's near-freefall descent.

    "WITNESS!"

  • King of Korvosa

Wait, Evil Odric is dead? Damn it!

    King of Korvosa

As the disc rises, Odric sees the foes arrayed before the Upturned Cup. He recalls the starstruck feeling he had when first confronted with royalty, but grimaces with chagrin at the memory. This usurper has set herself against the city Odric loves and has sworn to protect. His encounter with her 8 months and 19 days ago was like a meeting of two entirely different people. This meeting would go much differently.

A wall of flame billows toward him as way of introduction, and though he ducks. Reflex Save: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (4) + 17 = 21 <- Fail, takes 55 Damage. His enlarged form is not nimble enough to avoid the full brunt of the flames.

As he watches the fleet-footed and quick fingered on the battlefield deploy and begin the battle, he shrewdly appraises the tactical situation. When he spots an opportunity to lash out at Sandor's opponent, he takes it, almost as an after thought as he looks for the best way for him to wreak havoc on the enemies.

  • King of Korvosa

Odric performs a strenuous warm up routine, much more efficient and much less hilarious than those he used to do. He missed out on the Calistran ritual while siphoning up all the food and drink the manse could provide. At a certain point, Odric thought he was going to be able to deplete the platter of steaks he was attacking, but the manse was too fast to recharge the table.

He readies his planned potions for consumption immediately before entering the chamber; haste, enlarge person, and cat's grace. The kegerator was freshly polished, his breathless armor gleamed dully all over, except where Bellasham's blood had stained it blackish-red.

He prepares to charge in alongside Grym as part of the vanguard.

    King of Korvosa

OK, I'm going to sleep. Odric will drink 1 potion of Cat's Grace, 1 potion of enlarge person, and 1 potion of Haste (provided the party give it to him out of Morkeleb's stash). He is expecting a Greater Heroism from Cricktik too.

He takes a slug of The Stout to wash it all down, draws his legendary blade, and prepares to enter.

If the clock is ticking down, and the group doesn't appear ready to enter, Odric will enter 10 minutes before the appointed time and disrupt the ceremony,
