When Khalid collapses, Nuveril makes a sudden motion as if to charge the sarcophagus but manages to restrain herself, waiting for the reactions of Linah and Zeladiel. When he revives and reports his suspicions, she frowns. "It's still in there, then, whatever it is? They came in here and opened the box but didn't take it?" 4 rounds of fatigue; ought to be used up by searching and movement ... and healing. Nuveril hasn't really gotten beat up since the salamanders -- everything usually focuses on Sajan and Grall -- but this thing had plenty of attacks to go around. Nuveril is a bloody mess; although some of the worst of the wounds must have healed beneath the red stain, her appearance attests that she likely could not have withstood many more seconds at the end of the beast's tentacle. The disturbed state of the crypt seems to give her pause; her eyes fix on the dropped waterskin. How long ago? "They were smart enough not to wake the beast," she points out to Linah under her breath, "but they came without their thief...." She waits nervously for Khalid or Zeladiel to give the okay to advance to the sarcophagus. Nuveril only has time to register that the tentacle now trying to crush her leg is an uninjured one and not the one her hammer just struck before she swings again, trying to break its hold before the bone is broken. Rage round 6/16; Hammer 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (11) + 11 = 22 damage 1d6 + 11 ⇒ (4) + 11 = 15 Round 2, Init 18
DM Dan E wrote: Suspect they were more referencing the pre-combat discussion which I can only assume was IC (if abstracted) rather than relying on flat footed utterances :) I'm OK either way so up to your respective comfort levels. Honestly, I can't imagine her paying much attention to pre-combat discussions of tactical casting, either, unless someone specifically sat her down one-on-one and told her personally to wait for Zeladiel. Even then, after taking 26 points of damage, I'd probably still make a percentage roll for her to completely forget about her instructions in the heat of the moment. :) Fortitude 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (11) + 12 = 23 The familiar and unwelcome sensation of magic invading her being as she struggles against the beast, Nuveril easily shrugs it off. DM Dan E wrote:
No precise coordinates, but I'd say yes. :) Since Grall technically can't ask Zeladiel for a haste until after her init when he's no longer flat-footed, I don't think she has any IC justification to wait. Spitting her own blood out of her mouth, Nuveril tries to set her feet and brings her hammer down heavily on the tentacle that is trying to squeeze the life out of her. Rage (round 5/16); Hammer 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (19) + 11 = 30 damage 1d6 + 11 ⇒ (2) + 11 = 13 Round 1, Init 18
HeroLab is handling all the conditions, but it doesn't seem to be taking away her shield bonus for being grappled. If you can't do anything that requires two hands, wouldn't that negate using your shield? AC should probably be 16. "What other options do we have?" Nuveril growls. "If we were going back to the surface through the gnolls' temple, we should have done so when we had the advantage of surprise and the gnolls being scattered. By now, there is a new king on the throne, and I doubt he will be pleased to see us a second time." Only way out we know of is back up from under the Carrion King's throne, right? The garden went from there to the Pit with no other passages? Zeladiel Araxyll wrote: He calls over absentmindedly as he works. "Nuveril. If Perimac is your sister, she would also be descended from Andrathi. If she's looking for a tomb down here, it may well be that of Andrathi, the Genie Binder. This is mere speculation, but the edimmu certainly support the idea. The journal implies she and Tamir would have continued on, though they obviously couldn't reach this companion to retrieve him or his equipment. Since there's no sign either of them returned, I expect we'll find at least two more corpses ahead, though in what condition I am unsure. The presence of this Rough Seed certainly bodes ill. And if Nefeshti and Andrathi were connected in life, who knows how death and the Destroyer have corrupted that link." "The thief's writings said he was the one destined to steal whatever it was they were here to steal," Nuveril replies stubbornly. "Perhaps he came down alone, and the others left when he failed to return. Or perhaps there is another way out beyond the bronze door, and they took it. There is no necessity for her to be dead." Linah Jamil'Kaid wrote: Linah's bloodshot eyes widen with recognition as Khalid reads the journal entry and she looks at Nuveril. "This message disturbs me greatly. Who would want to search for the seed? I fear for the company your sister has gotten herself into and the contents of the book that the entry speaks of." Nuveril shoots Linah a look that implies the truth of her words is so obvious they need not even have been spoken. "Reading books? And all this ... magic?" Her voice drips with disgust as she gestures to the thief's journal. Zeladiel Araxyll wrote: "Nuveril. You were amazing. Those things fell before you like common gnolls." The halfling preens a little at the unexpected praise, but her good mood quickly vanishes when she discovers that the party intends to remain in this pit while Khalid peruses a journal. She sits down grumpily on the stairs as he reads and says something about a Seed, obviously disinterested. Then he begins to read the writing aloud. Despite herself, when the journal mentions halflings, she turns her head and begins to pay attention. When the halflings are named, she jumps to her feet and hurries over to Khalid. "Where does it say Perimac?" she demands, when he is done. "Where?!" Resting her finger on the word, she stares for a moment, then says slowly, "If my mother died in the temple in Kelmarane... then this is my sister. How long ago?" she asks urgently, looking across at the skeleton and the state of the equipment. "How long since there were only a few gnolls in the temple, before the Carrion King assembled his army?" Fatigued 8 rounds. Ought to be eaten up by Khalid's tending. :) Nuveril takes a moment to breathe after puncturing the last spirit before descending the staircase to the point where Linah and Khalid are blocking them. "Is there a passage out on the far side?" she asks Sajan. "Or is this indeed a pit with no way out but the one by which we came in?" Fortitude 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (7) + 12 = 19 Once again shrugging off the negative energy, Nuveril sets her feet more firmly and lashes out at the final malevolent spirit, hoping to end the battle and get out of this dark pit. Rage 4/16; Hammer 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (16) + 8 = 24 damage 1d6 + 9 ⇒ (2) + 9 = 11 Shield bash 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (15) + 8 = 23 damage 1d6 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11 Hammer 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6 damage 1d6 + 9 ⇒ (1) + 9 = 10 Round 4, Init 25
Still confused by the 3D facets of the staircase on the map, but if it's reachable from N29, that's where Nuveril already is. DM Dan E wrote: Nuveril has an available and near destroyed target at O,30 although from recent form it will negative energy everyone but Sajan if it dies there... I question whether, in her rage, Nuveril has even registered the negative energy's effects on anyone else yet, as she's made the saves. Anyway, I somehow doubt the edimmu will move to the far wall of the cavern and obligingly off itself out of range if she asks nicely. Hope she doesn't kill Khalid. :P Nuveril charges up the stairs, pushing past Zeladiel and dodging around Grall. Hard to tell from the map if she can step from O 28 to N 29 or if she has to go through Grall's square; Acrobatics to negate AoO if needed 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (1) + 14 = 15 She is barely past the gnoll's hairy legs when she swings eagerly at the spirit. "Linah!" she growls. "Down the stairs! I can't reach the one above you!" Rage 3/16; Move to N 29; Attack edimmu in O 30 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (6) + 10 = 16 damage 1d6 + 9 ⇒ (5) + 9 = 14 Meh, that might well miss and give everyone some time to move farther away before it explodes. Round 3, Init 25
Nuveril grins at her hammer's efficacy and decides to test her shield. Rage 2/16; Full attack: hammer 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (17) + 8 = 25 damage 1d6 + 9 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 9 + 2 = 17 shield bash 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (14) + 8 = 22 damage 1d6 + 5 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 5 + 2 = 12 hammer 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (17) + 3 = 20 damage 1d6 + 9 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 9 + 2 = 13 Round 2, Init 25
Nuveril remembers her dream and knows what is at stake. She has no fire, but she will fight nonetheless. She runs down the steps, taking up a stance above the floating ghosts, and clashes her hammer against her shield in challenge. "Come and fight, spirits!" Rage (1/16); Move to M 27, drawing hammer; Ready an attack at the first edimmu that comes in range 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (18) + 10 = 28 damage 1d6 + 9 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 9 + 2 = 12 Round 1, Init 25
DM Dan E wrote: The timing is amusing given Nuveril going back and forth on ghost rager but I was trying to avoid hints. Not to worry. The combination of flying creatures over hidden watery depths will be sure to keep her from doing any significant damage.* :P Initiative 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25 You and me both, Khalid! There goes a critical threat ... or a guaranteed save. (Personally, I think Dan is making us roll our own initiatives as a ploy to get our good rolls out of the way outside of combat.) *:
Sajan Krama Sumna wrote: Oh Nuveril is going to have a rant about the flying, I can't wait :D. Can't disappoint my public. ;) Hey! Nuveril's got a +14 to Acrobatics herself, and the only way she's getting carried anywhere is if she's unconscious and can't object strenuously! :P She won't be any help with carrying anyone, however. :) Nuveril takes the elf's word that the treasure is an illusion, disinclined to interfere with it even had it not been. Nuveril watches them go, running her fingers around the edge of her bronze disk distractedly, but as her only other option seems to be to remain in the enchanted garden, she sets her hand on her hammer and follows, muttering, "'Look, it's a lever; let's pull it. It's a staircase into the depths of the earth; let's descend it. It's marked "Pit of Screaming Ghosts," but I'm sure they mean "Exit."'" Nuveril stares incredulously after the wizard. The sudden disgorgement of specifics is a far cry from 'it appears to be a lucky charm,' the only information he had given her the last time he examined the disk. She stares for several seconds at the carved side with its clouds and lightning bolt, as if expecting to see something different. Then she gets quickly to her feet and follows Zeladiel down the stairs to where the others wait by the arcane cage. "What do you mean, elf? How long have you known these things? Who is bound by this, and what do they want from me?" And she arrives just as the cage ... disintegrates Zeladiel? ;) Zeladiel Araxyll wrote:
She scowls. "Your name is ... complicated," she mutters. "'Khalid.' 'Sajan.' 'Linah.' They are short and simple, easy to say. By the time I twist my tongue around all the parts of your name, the battle is over and the bodies looted." It would seem she finds the lyrical tone and lilt of the elven language intimidating to pronounce. DM Dan E wrote: Is Nuveril Ok where she is? Maybe she sleeps on the stairs? In the campsite room is fine. Without the magic breeze and trees, it's about as unenchanted a place to sleep as she can find in here. Despite the unnatural peace of the room, Nuveril, when she wakes, does not seem to have had a restful sleep. Her eyes are bleary and her face troubled. Muttering under her breath, as soon as she is awake, she immediately reaches for the bronze disk hidden beneath her clothing and pulls it out on top of her armor where she can see it. Moving over near where Zeladiel sits to study his spells and examine the treasure claimed from the bodies of the gnolls, she waits impatiently for him to acknowledge her, then asks insistently, "Elf, what is this thing?" Will go ahead and roll for hit points. 1d12 ⇒ 4 Bleah. You realize if she survives one more level, she'll finally actually get low-light vision, Dan? Kind of motivates you not to kill her, right? ;) Quote: Keen Senses (Ex): At 7th level, the superstitious barbarian gains low-light vision (triple normal vision range in dim light if she already has low-light vision). At 10th level, she gains darkvision 60 feet (or adds 60 feet to the range of any darkvision already possessed). At 13th level, she gains scent. At 16th level, she gains blindsense 30 feet. At 19th level, she gains blindsight 30 feet. This ability replaces damage reduction. Don't know what to pick for a rage power. I like the mechanics of the World Serpent Totem chain, but the fluff's all wrong for Nuveril's tribe. Roused Anger could be handy, but you'd better be darn sure it's the last battle when you use it because exhausted for 10 minutes per round of rage is crippling if you have to do anything, including move anywhere else, after the fight. Ghost Rager is cool, but considering we haven't fought anything incorporeal yet, I'm not sure how useful it would be in this AP. Khalid Al Ha'zareen wrote: Was there any sort of mechanism to close the passage behind us? DM Dan E wrote: Your just finished when the sound of even more gnolls from above spur you down the steps, Khalid locating a mechanism below that moves the throne back into place and Grall leading the way with his darkvision. Possibly edited in after you asked? Nuveril squints around at the garden suspiciously. "How can this grow without sunlight and insects? There must be magic involved," she concludes sourly, her hand going unconsciously to the bronze disk concealed beneath her clothing. "All gnolls are a threat," Nuveril corrects Sajan, as she obeys Khalid's instructions. "If we left Grall with his 'brethren' to claim the Carrion King's harem, he would also become a threat in time -- or if he would not, it would not be long before the spell-thrower stabbed him in the back as it did the priest and took his place." Although she scowls at the well-dressed gnoll's sudden appearance and lays her hand on her hammer, Nuveril does not make any motion to attack -- not as long as Khalid is speaking, anyway. She only had 24 seconds of fatigue; by the time the gnoll is done yapping, she ought to be good to go, if necessary. ;) Well, that good mood didn't last long. :) "Better for whom?" she retorts, frowning at Grall's suggestions. "Your 'brethren?' Fighting gnolls is what I came here for. Every one that escapes today will be murdering and slaving again tomorrow. And play along as what? Your slaves and captives? I felled the Carrion King; I am slave to no one." 4 rounds of fatigue. If we get a chance to search the Carrion King's body without being attacked from somewhere, that ought to take at least 24 seconds. With any luck, his harem will spread the word of his demise and some of the footsoldiers will desert ahead of our arrival. Weary but for once fully satisfied, Nuveril settles down to rest on her heels overlooking their fallen enemy. "Dead," she grins with satisfaction, "and thousands of leaderless gnolls still to be slaughtered. It is a good day." She glances up at the dim ceiling. "Or night. We have been underground so long I have lost track of where the sun should be." *sigh* Forgot Witch Hunter damage again. You can add 2 per hit, not that it matters much since he has some kind of ferocity.
The smell of the cloud leaves Nuveril unaffected, used as she is to infrequent bathing and the stink of livestock and butchered animals, but the dark energy of Rovagug blisters over her skin like cold fire. Still, she stands her ground. Without waiting for the map update, I'm assuming he hasn't moved from his square and that the air elemental is still providing flanking for Nuveril? If the elemental isn't where I think it is, subtract 3 to hit. The wave of fear washes over Nuveril, leaving her unmoved, a small but firm rock in the flood. She has been abandoned already and she survived; there is nothing she fears more than fleeing the battlefield like a coward and slave. Having finally laid claim to a space from which she has the Carrion King within her reach, she does not intend to relinquish it. Unleashing her full capabilities, enhanced by Zeladiel's spell, she attacks with wild abandon. "I am a Lion of the Savannah and the daughter of halflings," she retorts, "and when you fall, it will be partly by my hand." Rage; bull's strength, haste, Power Attack, Pack Hunter
Nuveril shares Sajan's frustration at seeing the prey they have sought for so long drop out of sight. "There is one gnoll ... invisible," she guesses, having seen the elf cast the glamer on her companions. Apart from that warning, she can do nothing but wait for a foe she can reach.... Fatigued (round 7/8), bless, bull's strength
Nuveril quivers with the urge to rush into battle, but Grall's words arrest her, as they could not if she were already raging. The gnoll is right. If we rush in, it will be a simple matter for him to stand his ground and hold us at the doorway, where no one else can threaten him, take us one by one. It is why he stopped where he did, inviting us. "After you," she growls, "and not in front of your females, lest their keening grate at my ears as they lament your death." She dances away from the doors, ducking behind Sajan and back toward the others between the pillars dividing the room. "Ready yourselves," she barks. "It is the our quarry, the gnoll king." Fatigued (round 6/8), bless, bull's strength
Snarling in anger that she let the archer get away, Nuveril shouts, "Sajan! Light!" and darts north after the priest, determined that she's going to smash something. Fatigued (round 4/8), bless, bull's strength, Power Attack
