Description:

Numalar is a Gnome of medium height, 3' 6" tall and weighing about 41 lbs. The most distinct thing people notice about him is the unusual faint golden cast to his skin. His eyes are also golden; a rare though not unheard of colour for gnomish eyes. His hair is black but shot with a golden streak running from above his left eye; here and there other individual hairs are also gold; as he ages his hair turns gold instead of grey. He wears a bristly beard and moustache, also black but shot with the odd golden hair. He wears clothing of black and gold, and though clearly this clothing was once fine it is now worn and threadbare. He smells of smoke; smudges of soot can be seen here and there among his clothing and gear, and he never seems to quite be able to get things clean. Sometimes he wears what appears to be armor, though on closer inspection it turns out that this armor is fake and just for show. His eyes burn with a certain intensity and while he seems friendly and cheerful there is a bitterness just beneath the surface, and his jokes can quickly turn cruel and sarcastic.

His clothing is marked with the badge of his coat of arms,, though since his title has not been recognized officially by the Brevic College of Heralds he may not wear it on a surcoat or a shield as a knight would.

Personality:

Numalar has become obsessed with restoring his family's name and heritage to some kind of noble status. He feels that he is entitled to the respect and dignity of someone of royal blood, and in fact this is a tenet of his religion, that his ancestors are the royalty of Valdralee, though secretly he has doubts that this is true, though his magic would seem to be proof of his claim. He overcompensates for these doubts with a certain pride and arrogance, though these things are a mask, an affectation to protect him from the possibility that there is nothing noble about him at all. Yet he is schooled in the etiquette and rules of court, and maintains his honour and dignity whenever possible. He keeps his promises and has goodwill towards others, though he hides this fact out of a desire to avoid being taken advantage of. He adopts a more gruff mercenary attitude around strangers (though he can be taken in by a good sob story and then shows a sympathetic side), and he has little respect for lawbreakers and those people who violate their society's mores.

Background:

Numalar was raised on stories of the long-lost city of Valdralee. His father taught him that he was decended from the Princes of Valdralee and always insisted that he know everything about it.

The Legend of Valdralee
His father described Valdralee as a city of gold and jewels and fire, a city of tall spires, beautiful gardens that bore fruits of ruby and emerald and sapphire, and fountains that sprayed diamonds instead of water. Valdralee was located in the First World, but also at the center of the world and on the surface of the sun simultaneously. It was at the center of the universe and yet secret and hidden. Numalar always wondered how a city could be in three places at once, but his father always said that "within the First world all things are possible." Even the people of Valdralee were made of gold.

Valdralee was ruled by a council of nine princes, wise and powerful scions of the great houses of the city, and the princes of the city had the ability to turn into dragons. Valdralee was the Capital City of the First World, and was a beacon of enlightenment to all. When the way was opened between the First World and the material plane, the Dominion of the city of Valdralee spread to all of Golarion as well. The knights of Valdralee took the shape of gold dragons to better protect the dominion of Valdralee and they remained in these forms; thus the gold dragons of today are allegedly descended from these Valdralean knights.

According to his father's stories, the city of Valdralee fell when the Rough Beast Rovagug was cast down and imprisoned within Golarion. The creation of the Pit of Gormuz shattered the city's connection with the center of the world. The towers of the city fell, and the gnomes of the city and the lands ruled by the city fled to the Material Plane. The gnomes of Valdralee found Golarion cold and harsh and moved underground to be near the rivers of magma that ran there. For a short time the Princes of Valdralee continued to rule the world, but not long afterwards the people of the world rejected the Princes and went their own ways. The descendants of the Princes never forgot, however, and retained the memory of their noble heritage.

Numalar's father seemed convinced that these stories were absolutely true, though anyone else Numalar spoke to outside of his family considered it pure fiction, and derided Numalar for believing it. When he would suggest to his father that Valdralee was not a real place, his father would grow stern and angry, and would force him to recite the geneaology of House Auritonius, and would strike him for every error. With over 300 generations of ancestors, Numalar would rarely get it right. While other gnome families would teach their children useful crafts, Numalar's family taught him the rules of courtly etiquette and behaviour. Though they honoured the gods Brigh, Abadar, Nethys, and even occaisionally Apsu, their primary devotions were to the spirits of their ancestors. As with the other foibles of his family, many of Numalar's neighbours derided his family for this practice, insisting that Numalar's ancestors were not divine.

Growing Up
Numalar grew up in Ohrza-Kushain, a town deep within the darklands, a hybrid city consisting of lava gnomes, svirfneblin, duergar, mongrelmen, kobolds, and even a few derro. Though many gnomes lived there, Numalar's family was always distinct due to the slight golden cast of their skin. Numalar's father was also known for his arrogant and haughty demeanor and this brought Numalar's family into conflict with others on many occaisions. Eventually, an altercation between Numalar's father and the kobolds of the town escalated into a genuine feud, and the lava gnomes disowned the Auritonius family, having gotten fed up with their attitude. Numalar's family was forced to leave.

The Surface World, and a Patron
Numalar and his parents made their way to the surface, and they attempted to make a new life among the people of the world above. They found themselves in the land of Brevoy, near the Golushkin Mountains. Numalar's father's coutly manners got him a place in the court of House Garess, where he would spin tales of Valdralee for the entertainment of the court. A sorcerer of middling power, Numalar's father would often be sent on errands to treat with the dwarves of the mountains or to provide magical assistance with the patrols of House Garess as they watched for Numerian raiders.

Despite the overt friendship offered by Lord Garess and his family, Numalar's father was never given any sort of official position or title, nor was he ever given any lands or estate to call his own. In short, Numalar's family was always dependent on the generosity of House Garess, and was required to serve the house as a courtier to ensure their continued hospitality. Though Numalar's father seemed content with this, Numalar was secretly disgusted by his father's behaviour. In Numalar's eyes, his father had become little more than a court jester, and had traded their dignity for a warm bed and a full belly. Had he truly been descended from Royalty as he always claimed, his father ought to have struck out on his own, and achieved some sort of dominion on his own.

Dissatisfaction and Dissolution
In this time Numalar descended gradually into depression and idleness. Good at making friends, he began to associate with a number of dissipate young nobles, who lived their lives drinking, carousing, and getting into fights, always confident that their status would prevent them from getting into any real trouble. Numalar spun his own stories of Valdralee to his friends, inventing a darker, more violent side of the ancient city. He would describe their wars with their arch-enemies the Red Dragons, and it seemed to most listeners that his stories were an allegory of the Nation of Brevoy and its arguably evil conquerors the house Rogarvia, a fact which often got him into trouble. Numalar's father eventually became as disgusted with Numalar's lifestyle as Numalar was with his father's.

Gradually though Numalar found that the young men he caroused with grew out of their idleness and settled down; one by one they got married or inherited their parents' estates, and the the once carefree youths became more serious and mature. Numalar felt himself to be more and more isolated. He was getting older, and the younger generation had little interest in him, yet his friends had all seemed to move on.

A Rude Awakening
Numalar was practically a recluse and approaching middle age when the nation of Brevoy was shaken to its core. The ruling house, house Rogarvia, mysteriously disappeared, leaving Brevoy without a ruler. Though house Surtova would ultimately gain the throne, for a short while the houses of Brevoy jockeyed for position and a number of skirmishes were fought, skirmishes which might have escalated into full-blown war. Despite his age, Numalar's father joined the forces of house Garess and his magical prowess proved to be of great service to house Garess. Numalar was shocked that his father was willing to participate, and risk his life in battle. His father's actions revealed a side to him that Numalar had never understood.

But despite his father's value on the battlefield, his father was mortally wounded by a poisoned arrow that seemed to defy magical healing. On his deathbed Numalar's father told Numalar that it was time for him to head out on his own. "It is your duty and destiny to reestablish Valdralee," he said to Numalar. "Of all the great houses of the nine princes, ours is the last that remains, and each generation is smaller than the last. You must restore our family's honour and rebuild Valdralee here on Golarion, before the memory of Valdralee is lost forever." That night Numalar's father died.

New Purpose
His father's words burned Numalar to the core. Realizing that he had wasted half his life with practially nothing to show for it, he found himself with a new passion. Though house Garess gave Numalar a substantial "reward" for his father's service to them, it became clear that house Garess had little interest in retaining Numalar the way they had retained his father. This suted Numalar fine; he needed to get out on his own, and the machinations of the noble courts seemed to him to be a dead end. He used the funds to finance genuine magical training; though always posessed of magical gifts as are most Lava Gnomes, Numalar had little understanding of the practical applications of magic and realized that magic was the one thing that might get him where he needed to be.

It is now several years later, and Numalar's studies are complete. Though he is nearly out of money, he has heard of opportnities in the south of the country and intends to make his fortune, hopefully earning a proper title and perhaps a fief or estate.

Though he honours the spirits of his ancestors as his father taught him, he no longer sees Valdralee as an actual place so much as an ideal, a concept of the "Perfect City." The tale of Valdralee informs us about the rewards of honour and civilization, and he aspires to live up to these ideals as best he can.

Contacts:
The Furious Five
When he was younger, Numalar and his drinking companions used to call themselves the "Furious Five" as there were five of them (though others came and went) and they liked to raise hell in the taverns in the canal district of Greyhaven. Though Numalar knew these men when they were younger they have all moved on with their lives and gone their separate ways.
Since the Gray River does not seem to quite reach Grayhaven I am assuming that the city is connected by canal to facilitate river trade

The Furious Five (aside from Numalar) were:
Lord Antonesko Garess (Human Aristocrat 3/Cavalier 2) is a second cousin to Bren Garess, the biological heir to Duke Howlan Garess. While he was a wild youth he has grown into a serious and humorless adult. Though he and Numalar were once close, he considers Numalar to be something of a man-child as he and the other members of the Furious Five seemed to outgrow their youthful antics while Numalar never seemed to, though Antonesko has not had contact with Numalar since the death of Numalar's father. Antonesko is now married and is set to inherit a minor estate within House Garess; until then he occupies himself with a middling position within the duke's Treasury office.

Lord Antonesko privately disapproves rather strongly of the Duke's adoption of Toval Golka. While he respects dwarves and their contribution to the Duchy, he nevertheless feels (rather chauvainistically) that the dwarves belong in their mountains and the task of ruling the duchy should be left up to humans, particularly those born of House Garess. Even if the Duke had not adopted Toval it is very unlikely that Antonesko would ever inherit the duchy (more than a dozen other heirs would have to die first), he chafes at the idea that his house and family might be ruled by a nonhuman not born of the line of Garess.

Sir Grigori Arminius (wife Olivia) (Human Cavalier 4) Grigori is the second son of Baron Wendell Arminius. Though not set to inherit his father's barony, he had nevertheless settled down with a wife and obtained a posting as Bailiff of a manor and a position as a Serjeant in the Duke's personal guard. Grigori was known as being honest, friendly, and well-liked.

However, after the vanishing the country was in turmoil, and for a brief time the great houses of Brevoy fought for position. The Duke's guard fought in the battle of the Fog Hills, and during the battle Grigori disappeared, and was never seen again. Most friends and family (including his wife Olivia) believe him dead, but Grigori's parents, Baron and Baroness Arminius, still hold on to a hope that he still lives, and have offered a reward for news of him. But in the nine years since the Vanishing no-one has heard anything of him.

Sir Vladislav Boriye (Human Aristocrat 2/Expert 1) Vladislav is the heir to Galaskoye Manor, a small holding in the foothills of the Golushkin mountains. Galaskoye is a poor fief, and Vladislav's parents could barely keep up with the expectations of their lifestyle and the obligations of nobility. So when the opportunity arose they jumped at the chance to arrange a marriage between Vladislav and Ylena Myatlev, a heiress to the fortune of Nikolos Myatlev, a wealthy merchant in the copper and brass trade. The Myatlevs were willing to allow their daughter to marry a poor noble as a means of gaining a foothold for their family among the aristocracy.

Vladislav initially fought the decision, as Ylena was rather homely, but has resigned himself to this life and tries to make the most of it. Being brought into the Myatlev family business does allow him to live in Greyhaven instead of the miserable Galaskoye, and though he appears happy with his family life Vladislav does secretly maintain a mistress in town.

Sir Piotr Salizçek (Human Daring Champion 4/Ex-Cleric 1) When Piotr ran with the Furious Five, he was the quickest to draw his sword and challenge others to a duel. While usually jovial and light-hearted, he had a cruel streak that would come out when he fought, especially when he had been drinking.

The third son of a noble, Piotr never had much of a chance to inherit, so his father, trying to find him a suitable job that would support his lifestyle and status, and also trying to get Piotr to "settle down," arranged for a choice benefice for Piotr in the priesthood of Abadar.

Sadly, the priestly life did not agree with Piotr, particularly the rigid and humorless church of Abadar (Calistria might have been a better fit for Piotr). Piotr was too disruptive and disrespectful, and after a year of study he was thrown out of the priesthood. The last Numalar had heard, Piotr had fled to New Stetven and gone on a month-long drunk, going back to his old ways, only this time alone. Numalar doesn't know what became of him.

Other Contacts

Caraduck Thorpe, chandler. (Halfling Rogue 1/Expert 3) When Numalar arrived in Restov to study magic, he found that there was no gnome quarter there, so he chose to stay in the halfling district because there he could find accomodations, goods, and services suitable to his size. He rented a room from Caraduck Thorpe, a local halfling chandler. Though originally their relationship was strictly business, Numalar and Caraduck became friends, and Numalar would entertain Caraduck's children with stories of Valdralee. Though chandlers specialize in making candles, lamp oil, and so forth, they also commonly buy items from other guilds and re-sell them, operating as a sort of "general store," so Numalar has bought most of his starting gear through Caraduck.

Arthiel Savaylas, magic teacher (Elf Wizard 5) Arthiel is one of the instructors at the Golden Hand Academy of Magic in Restov. A prestigious, though provincial school, most of the students at the Academy are Magi, working to combine magic with their fighting with the Aldori dueling sword. Arthiel, however, feels that wizards are the "true" magicians and prefers to teach pure magic unadulterated with the use of melee weapons. Arthiel also believes only elves can become true masters of magic, as wizardry is a life-long study and only elves live long enough to master all its aspects, so he tends to look down on races with shorter lifespans.

He doesn't especially approve of sorcerers either, feeling that sorcerers haven't "earned" their magic abilities through study, but Numalar enrolled in the Academy not to learn magic spells, but rather to learn the theories and principles behind magic. Since Arthiel is one of the school's primary experts in spellcraft and arcane knowledge, and found a quick and eager student in Numalar. Though he disapproves of Numalar's use of sorcery, nevertheless Numalar always treated him respectfully, as opposed to the younger human students who often failed to take their education seriously. Since Numalar's graduation Arthiel and Numalar have kept in touch, corresponding mostly by letter on the subject of magical theory.

Ableena Gampoodlajist (Gnome Bard 3) Ableena is a wandering gnome bard who met Numalar at a tavern in the halfling district of Restov, where Numalar was telling stories to pay for his drinks. Ableena was fascinated by Numalar's stories, and has tried to put several of them to music, but her versions of them never seem to end up right as she has a compusion to add animal characters, food fights, magical love potions, an surprise twists at the end that make no sense. Numalar is flattered by the attention, but would really rather that Ableena leave his stories as they are. He is too polite to outright criticise Ableena's music but Ableena sometimes senses Numalar's disapproval, and makes her song versions of his stories even more ridiculous to annoy him.

Ableena can sometimes be found in Restov, but wanders the region as her whims drive her, confident that she can pay her way with her charm and her music. She has been hoping to get a commission from some aristocrat to compose a song in their honor, and has been studying courtly traditions and histories, but it seems unlikely she will receive one in light of the kind of music she is known for.

Zelara Osztolykan, Varisian Harrow reader. (Human Wizard 3)

Liana Korloff, servant in the house of Duke Garess (Human Expert 5) When Numalar and his father attended the Duke Garess, they lived in a small set of rooms in the duke's palace. While living there their acommodations were small and lowly, but they were attended on by a servant, who for most of their time there was Liana Korloff. When they first arrived, Liana was a young girl, newly begun her career as a maidservant. Now she is in her early sixties, is married to one of the Duke's Ostlers, and has granchildren, but she still works in the Garess household.

Liana is a cheerful, uncomplicated woman, who considers things like marriages, chilren, and who-is-courting-who to be the important things in life. After all, your family is all you truly leave behind in this life. As a result, she tends to be quite a gossip, particularly when it comes to relationships between people. Unlike most people in the Garess household, she has no problem with the Duke's adoption of Toval Golka, and is much more interested in who Toval will choose as a wife.

In-Game Contacts

Oaths:
Numalar periodically swears by figures who are a part of his Valdralean heritage. I'm mainly putting them here for my own reference.

"By My Ancestors!" (A general oath, but also used to bear witness to a promise)
"By the Nine Princes!" (As above, only promises made under this oath are more likely to be of a legal or official nature)
"By Draklar the Fair!" (An oath invoking beauty or romance)
"By the Golden Spire of Kembalyne!" (Traditionally the tower of House Auritonius, invoking the pinnacle of achievement.)
"Selbina's Tears!" (An oath bearing witness to tragedy or sadness)
"By Macrathane's Codpiece!" (Foul language, a kind of curse. Macrathane was not known for good hygiene or healthy sexual habits.)
"By Shaliobhan the Silver Tongued!" (Pronounced "SHALL-ih-von." According to the stories, Shaliobhan was a masterful liar and storyteller. If Numalar swears by her what he is saying is probably made up)
"By the Blade of Shindorlai!" (A battle oath)

24 Pharast, 4708 AR - Met with Lord-Mayor Ioseph Sellenius and Ser Richard Iannuchi, Lord Commander of the Swordlord Council at the Lord-Mayor's residence. Interesting that it wasn't at a government office. Were granted a Royal Charter to explore the Greenbelt.

30 Pharast - Arrived at Oleg's Trading Post.

31 Pharast - Defended Trading Post from Bandits. Took one prisoner. 156 XP. Burninated: 27 + 17 = 44
Explored hex while looking for runaway horses. 25 XP.
Were ambushed by a Worg while scouting. 200 XP. Burninated: 11. Total 11 + 44 = 55

01 Gozran - Visited Bokken and bought 2 CLW potions. Encountered 3 trap-door spiders and one large spider on the way back. Burninated: 20.
Total 20 + 55 = 75.

02 Gozran - Setting out after Bandits. Visited Vekkel Benzen and his family. Promised to look for Byron Benzen, who allegedly joined the bandits. Met a group of kobolds in the forest and promised to find their "god" for them. Set out again and captured Chick and Wilbur, two bandits out looking for firewood. Got enough information from them to attack the bandit camp. Fought the bandits, burninated only 6 (went down to color spray before getting to use burning hands). We took a total of six prisoners. Met new party members Scarlet and Alia.
Total 6 + 75 = 81.

03 Gozran - left the site of the bandit camp, went south on the Thorn River until we got clear of the Narlmarches, then turned northeast, headed towards Oleg's.

04 Gozran - Awoke in the morning to thick fog covering the land. Zokon spotted a strange furry tree in the mist but withdrew from it. When the fog cleared, we found tracks but no tree. Nearby there was a jumble of stones and a body with a stag's mark on it. The stones had an evocation effect on them and another spell that we failed to identify at all. Though we lost half the day we pressed on and made camp.

05 Gozran - travelled the rest of the way back to Oleg's. Upon arriving we met Jhod Kavken and Esme. Jhod had found a pair of bodies on his way to Oleg's, also with stag marks. We buried the bodies and paroled Chick and Wilbur to labor in Oleg's compound for 3 months.

08 Gozran - encountered trolls (including 'Pip') on the road just after dark and reached Nivatka's Crossing shortly thereafter. Stayed at the "Soyev's Sundown Sundries" which is both a store and a tavern, and met Akate, Thrice Damned and Argentov Lind.

09 Gozran - arrived in Restov. Offered to help Mung investigate missing ratters. Turned over bandits to magistrate, and was attacked by ruffians in tavern.

10 Gozran - Healed Faeria of her madness at Erastil's Lodge. Began investigating sewers. Fought rat swarm and were blown up by Posh. Returned to surface for healing and to buy a wand of CLW, and then back to the sewers. Fought more animals, including pigeon swarm, feral cats, and wererat. Wererat escaped. Burninated 13. Attacked Vernon's scow and fought roaches. Burninated 8.
Total 19 + 81 = 100

11 Gozran headed out from Restov. Naleksa Vijic now in party.

12 Gozran attacked by wolves while camped. Burninated 13 + 5.
Total 18 + 100 = 118

13 Gozran found Fan Auric being attacked by Kobolds and rescued him. Returned to Oleg's.

14 Gozran went to the meeting at the Renault farm and then went on the the fair nearby. Wolves appeared at the fair and hilarity ensued. Burninated 8. We tracked Rain and caught up with him, but were ambushed by Grogan. Burninated 11. We followed Rain as he led us towards his master Tamris, but we were ambushed by Meg the Snipe, Tor of Hom, his Evil Owl Notch, and a few kobolds, along with Tuskgutter, who showed up at an inopportune moment. Burninated Meg for 12 and Tor for 10. Tor critted me for 26 with scorching ray. Ouch! Sent to the nether realms for a bit...
