Oh no we all understood *why* they were freeing slaves, but, when you see your noble allies pulling off assassinations and recreations of the Cyberdyne building's last moments... it feels a little disappointing.

Unless the echelon rises in front of him how does he know it did anything? If he was worried that it did do something, why didn't he immediately flip to the back of the book and enact the abort code?

Anywhere he could successfully perform the code he would have line of sight to BE. So he'd have to be pretty blind not to notice the horrific undead abominations marching ashore from the sea.

ithuriel wrote:
And I believe it does mention that once the abort code is enacted the Silent Tide is permanently aborted.

That would be the master abort code. Remember this is a code *book* not a code pamphlet, there's more than the 3-6 codes mentioned in the mod itself.

How much was gained.

I've had a couple Chelaxian players ask this to me, and I'm curious now too.

Are the Chelaxians really evil? After looking at three faction missions you've got freeing slaves, blowing up a building, and killing someone (and making it hurt), of those the Chelaxian mission is freeing slaves... What?!?!

Does it get any better for those wanting to play the bad guy?

Long story short, if you want to start PFS with as many options as possible then you'll want to wait till August when Pathfinder goes live and the PFS rules set changes.

Personally I've been running PFS all year as it kept the momentum of 3.5's LG from dying in my area.

Given that LG's been gone for almost a third of a year now that momentum is gone and you may wish to wait for the Pathfinder release.

You can be a certain ethnic race in PFS, but so far as stats you would be a stock human.

Stormfriend wrote:
That's not necessarily bad as it allows characters to be re-imagined and re-equipped without getting hurt financially (I quite like it in fact), but it may also be open to abuse.

Trust me, 80% GP is not the place to be. You want your net worth, and even more to the point, cash on hand to be as high as possible to buy that next great thing to come up in access.

Not yet, only PHB races for now.

Possibly come August and the change to PF rules system.

A gold floor doesn't encourage PCs to help pay for resurrections or potions, because they lose the gold and only get reimbursed when they fall to 80% of the PC Gold per Level table.

But a floor has two distinct advantages. First it keeps people from being gimped by (CLW) potion addiction. Second it gives another in character reason for being a part of the PFS (they make sure I'm not adventuring nekkid).

Though I'm considering that instead of checking at the start of a level, allow the assessment once per level at any time. This works especially well during those first few levels when you'll end up panhandling for clothes if you happen to die.

Well if you played LG back in year 1 or 2 you would have tracked the exact gold value of your character.. it was called (by many) Living Accounting because of it.. and it was a real pain.

I'd heard, and seen some older characters and mods, brutal. I think the last year went too far the other way though.

Do not confuse articulation with 'trying too hard'.

My apologies, I was hoping you weren't fluent instead of trying to be a dick.

In any case I still believe when complaining one should offer at least an idea since what boils down to 'it sucks' only tells the creatives that you don't like it.

_metz_ wrote:
It seems odd that for someone who was bad-mouthing the consideration of LG you are now completely reversing your argument.

Are you certain you're fluent? In one post I was referencing character longevity, in the other character viability. These are clearly two different subjects, and in neither did I state the problem or solution was related to emulating LG.

_metz_ wrote:

I would rather discuss a solution.

_metz_ wrote:
Now lets get one thing straight you arrogant jerk:

Yes whiner?

I'm guessing English isn't your first language, otherwise you're just trying too hard.

It's all well and good you latched onto someone's idea, in fact it's not a bad idea to hitch your wagon to, but in general, just complaining isn't nearly as fruitful as actually thinking up a solution.

My own solution, which I admit is merely a tweak of LG's charity of Friends clause, would be that at every level a character assess their own net worth. Should that net worth be under 80% of level appropriate that their GP be raised to that amount.

I've reported 3 events so far, one of which today.

Unfortunately I was informed by a player that the last two events I've reported (along with all other events we've held) don't show up on his page. Checking the events I've reported I see the two I'd previously reported are now blank.

Stormfriend wrote:
But people were complaining about LG ending too quickly after running for five or more years (iirc), so a 4 year plus lifespan for a character isn't unreasonable and I personally consider it to be deirable.

I think I misrepresented what I intended to relay. There's only so much a character can do before it becomes a little strange they're still doing dungeon crawls etc...

For instance my main LG character (a rogue3 ranger2 fighter2 ex-bard0 swashbuckler3) has:

  • been to nearly a dozen foreign planes (not counting the near infinite levels of the abyss he's been to)
  • cursed with bad luck by a god
  • cursed by a vengeful dragon's spirit
  • was reincarnated by a great druid's spirit (in bunny form), and completed the day's adventuring afterwards
  • gave up bardic life and became a dwarf (see above)
  • can call upon latent powers of my bloodline
  • can call upon over a dozen other magical/supernatural favors
  • can cheat death (twice).
  • has cheated death more times than I can recall (thanks helm of glorious recovery!)
  • has worked for a few legendary LG characters, and several named NPCs
  • made deals with angels, fey, devils, demons, and abberations alike
  • made enemies (and allies) of epic characters
  • blessed (and cursed) by several churches
  • slew a maug single handedly with a dagger
  • owed well over 2 dozen mortal favors
  • purchased a keep and became a minor noble somewhere (I forget where)
  • attracted a band of 40 followers and a mid level cohort
  • full citizen of and mansion owner in the Kingdom of Nyrond
  • own a cottage somewhere else
  • roaming member of the Greyhawk city watch
  • carried and cured of the plague.
  • owns a dog that can slay a hamlet (that I leave at home to keep *him* safe)
  • And still gets reprimanded for beating one child (that was taking me deep into the Abyss)

At which point I think to myself: "I can sell *one* item (at half GP cost) and have enough for booze and whores for me and my men for several lifetimes, why am I still doing this?"

The vast majority of that list is before LG got crazy with year 8, and he lived mostly in the Nyrond and her Environs, a metaregion known for being reserved with access and favors.

I suggest Many Fortunes and Silent Tide be run back to back. Same day if possible.

The rest really depends on what resources you guys have and need as far as a group.

That's over 30 *years* of mods to hit retirement age. If I wanted to start at the bottom, get promoted through attrition, battle for years to earn respect, then retire after decades of toil I'd just look for another job.

_metz_ wrote:
Do you feel big now that you have personally attacked me?

Not particularly, but your tantrum was amusing.

But thank you for not polluting this thread with your off topic solutions to the leveling problem you have with PFS.

DarkWhite wrote:
I don't think this response was called for.

I've noticed our opinions can vary greatly. The problem with critical thinking nowadays is most people are critical without thinking. I was merely pointing out the part metz missed.

Character death can really dampen a person's mood, but unless it takes you completely out of the fight roll with the punches and cope.

_metz_ wrote:
Death in Pathfinder is purely a financial cost, with no way of ever Recovering it. This means any PC who dies in Pathfinder is permanently worse off than other PCs.

I'm among a large number of people who would've rather lost some gold than a level. Oh sure you're short some cash, but in the long run you're still gaming with your buddies, or at least at the same league as them. 1 lost level can mean a long road of half xp and gp in LG, or worse yet a death spiral that leaves a character broken in more ways than one.

Ok smartass we listened to you whine, now what are your solutions?

Zavarov wrote:
The bell towers are mentioned in the second paragraph on page 3. The blackmail scheme is also on page 3, second column, paragraph beginning with "Recognizing his own follishness".

The bell towers are never destroyed. That paragraph was discussing the intentions of BE during operation ST, which never happened due to being discovered and killed.

Zavarov wrote:
The 30 minute time limit is on page 10 right at the beginning of Act 5.

The time limit (assuming that the cathedral fell) is to catch Nessian and abort the operation before ST begins. With the codebook Nessian can call BE to attack and withdraw, making for the perfect threat to the city.

Zavarov wrote:
I still don't see how Nessian gets involved in all of this.

GT is an information broker, now seen in multiple mods, thus he has eyes and ears everywhere to get him information from throughout the city. This is why having GT inform Nessian is the easiest way to connect N to the codebook.

Zavarov wrote:
Maybe he's a fanatic Taldoran and one of his goons overhears Yargos and his friends in the Drowning Depths as they plan the event.

This doesn't show the hallmark of Taldan Tactics, furthermore why would Nessian be interested in an old man's book purely by chance.

You know there's already a thread for this mod right?

Spoiler:
Zavarov wrote:
1. Yargos replicates the codes on a lark. Why on earth would he do this? And what happened next? Did the Black Echelon destroy the bell towers?

You wouldn't believe how stupid some 'smart' people are. Remember the super collider experiment that some scientists feared might cause a tiny blackhole that would destroy us all? Yeah, they still went along with it. Plus, how often do the dead come back on their own without the help of some evil cleric/necromancer?

Zavarov wrote:
2. Yargos then tries to alert the city. I take it nobody believed his story? If the bell towers were destroyed, why didn't they believe him?

I'm guessing the bell tower is something your GM said, as it's not in the mod. As such he has not a leg to stand on.

Zavarov wrote:
3. He then tries to hurl the codebook into the sea. However, Nessian "intervenes". How exactly did Nessian learn of the book and how did he intervene?

Grandmaster Torch. It explains why GT comments on Nessian as he does, as he'd be propping up the young warlord. Intervention can be as simple as grabbing the book as it's sailing over the cliff to as rough as you'd like.

Zavarov wrote:
4. Nessian later sends his goons to kill Yargos. Why didn't he kill the historian immediately?

In case he needed to use the old man to decipher the codes. By the start of the mod he's found he doesn't need Yargos, and has him disposed of so no pesky Pathfinders use the old man's knowledge to upset his plans.

Zavarov wrote:
5. Act 1 starts at early evening. Act 4 at sunrise. Since the PCs are under time pressure, I assume they didn't sleep. Where did the time go then? Surely act 2 and 3 don't take all night to complete?

Early evening is 6-7pm, sunrise is (around here anyway) about 5-6am. Given the group runs across the city a few times over, searching the granary for poison, and the time it takes to open the boxes, the timeframe isn't too far off.

Zavarov wrote:
6. Nessian plans to blackmail the city. However, it is made clear that unless the abort code is given within half an hour of the cathedral attack, the city is doomed. So how exactly does he plan to go about his blackmailing in that short timeframe?

I didn't see that in the mod either.

Zavarov wrote:
7. For that matter, is it wisdom to be encamped just outside the city when you summon an army of undead to sack it?

As opposed to within the city? Absolutely!

I suppose I can see that. I was hoping the MB rulings thread would get some support from Mr Frost, or help from others who saw their own questions answered.

Later on in the thread, he posted the passage you quoted above. And then, in the last post in that thread, Josh comes on again and says that the matter deserves some more thought and consideration.

Chris Mortika wrote:
Sure, we can agree to disagree, but if I'm the GM, and require you to give up your bought-and-trained animal because of what I think are the rules, you still walk away from that session with a note on your chronicle sheet, and your next GM may have read the same post I did.

The handling of 'not kosher' items is perhaps an issue unto itself. Personally I offer the character full gold for anything they've accidentally purchased. As for dismissing familiars and companions it's a lot easier if you accept Mr Frost's comments as above.

I'll skip the Sage Advice comments; he's been considered wrong by far too many people I trust on the rules to take him seriously. But just so you know Mr. Frost has explicitly stated rerolls are allowed.

Of course there's no PFS nazis running around telling you how to run your game and you can do as you please. Personally I think it'd a prick move, especially if it's widely known for this feature, and several got their shirts just to do so.

And we being reasonable adults would come up with something on the spot, then each research our arguments to convince the other. Granted in my scenario I'd be right because I keep tabs on these.

The great thing about this forum is that it's open to all, even those without access to the books.

Chris Mortika wrote:
I ask her which she wants her character to keep: the familiar or the animal companion. (And whichever one she dismisses, she'll have to wait a full year to summon a replacement.) I tell her to cross off the other one and I write in her chronicle that she no longer has the animal she purchased.

I think I see your problem. You're having a problem interpreting the rules as Mr. Frost has clearly said that it's one fighting animal. Technically a character can keep the familiar, the companion, and additional animal as long as only one is involved in fighting. Most often familiars aren't combatants and not subject the the rule.

In my groups some of the people look to the boards and ask me about rulings, and if I don't have a satisfactory answer I come here and look, or ask, then come back with a final ruling.

Incidentally this has lead to a couple players asking about where to find Onyx...

Chris Mortika wrote:
The exception is in cases where the official rules are silent.

Oddly enough the rules are silent on if anyone gets free rerolls for owning faction shirts. I'd suggest allowing them as Josh had said in another thread.

Chris Mortika wrote:
Is it now the case that 1.2 won't be coming out till GenCon?? I have players that keep waiting to be allowed to use their faction shirt re-rolls, and they'll have to wait till August?? Gaarrr!

Wait... You're denying your group faction rerolls just because it's not written in the guide? If you're using *any* of the MB rulings this should be the one!

Could have been Traits, been awhile since it was mentioned, and it's never been a big deal to me.

Remeber, things will be switching up come 1.2 when Pathfinder goes live. I believe the term was 'talents' instead of feats.

Sanakht Inaros wrote:

Second, stats. The way I read the PFSG is that seven is the lowest you can take a stat even counting for a -2. Is that correct or can it go lower?

Yes additional. Yes 7 is as low as it goes.

This god demands old bay!

Use Galorion gods. Preferably fresh, if not live. Remember, bring your own cooler with plenty of ice, and the gods deserve aromatics such as lemon, onions, and rosemary.

james maissen wrote:
Well the bottom line is that it takes more effort & work to run them than it needs to be to do so.

And Paizo's bottom line is that it'll cost them more to do so. These costs will be passed on to us. Even though 'my' mods are bought and paid through the gaming club I'd like to keep those costs to a minimum so we can have GM perks, contests, and the charitable donation or two.

hogarth wrote:
Note that this question may be moot after August anyways; there's no time limit involved in recruiting a new familiar in the Pathfinder Beta rules (although this could be changed in the final version).

Really? Guess it'll be easier on the arcane guys then. Though an official ruling would be nice given that there will likely be timeframe instances year +1 day and otherwise.

1) PFS #6 Black Waters
You can make this *very* creepy, and it's always fun to play the insane. Beware you'll need to adjudicate one faction mission as it's not fleshed out, but could be a simple matter of payment.

2) PFS #13 Prince of Augustana
Sewer excursions with a fantasy tale tossing you down there. Also an excuse for the great Chicago fire.

3) PFS #5 Mists of Mwangi
Gonna second this one as it's simply *awesome* to see characters turn into raging monkeys.

Other mods of note: PFS #10 Blood at Dralkard Manor, PFS #4 Frozen Fingers, PFS #7 Among the Living.

I'd avoid Silent Tide/Many Fortunes unless you know the other is being run by someone else. I think GMT is best served with another helping of his Kentucky fried self.

Also avoid Asmodeus Mirage, bad times at high tier.

I can't recall Mr. Frost answering such a question.

The two most likely answers I can imagine would be 1 year and 1 day after the date of the mod you lose the familiar/mount/etc... (most likely in my mind) or the first mod after August (the 'new year').

kinevon wrote:

  • some more mundane items like alchemical stuff or a light warhorse

I'm pretty sure that's open access. In fact I'd bet on it. They're in the PHB afterall.

I think it would be easier to provide a dataset for one of the 3.5 character builders, such as Redblade.

Skyler Brungardt wrote:

Feature, not bug.

hogarth wrote:
Actually, I would've thought it would be the other way around;

Ah but there's the rub, there are certain items that are more useful than others. For instance when LG was coming to it's end many new items became open access including the core 6*.

This meant that many people cashed in older items that were quirky or thematic to their characters for items that offered the best statistical payoff. Others simply had a dragon's horde in coin hoping for the one item to dump it all on, becoming much more powerful in one fell swoop.

I quickly became an oddity for my helm (sometimes called my 'helm of NotMousse just charged into battle again') and lacking some (2) of the core 6.

*The core 6 are the magic items pretty much universal gear no matter what the class. These items are (in random order): +1 weapon (often multiple), +1 armor and shield (or +1 bracers of armor), +2 stat booster (exact ones depend on class), +1 cloak/vest of resistance, +1 ring of protection, +1 amulet of natural armor.

james maissen wrote:
Why bother to need to give out access to items?

Everything boils down to this question, to which the reply is equally short. If everyone had access to everything (magic item shops) then every <race/class combo> would be outfitted pretty much the same just like WoW.

I prefer my games to be less like WoW.

james maissen wrote:
I'm sorry.. it's a PDF.. how would say another page of length need to change the price?

First off writers are often paid by word count, second *I* have to print these things which makes it cost more for *me*.

'As for MM stuff, I understand that occurs due to the OGL. When mods have those critters in them I print out the relevant portions from the SRD.'

You understand wrong. Having the OGL at the end of every mod means you can print the stats no problem, indeed more than once has SRD documents been reprinted and sold for profit (pocket PHB being the most famous of these).

It does tend to a lot of flipping at times, but when compared with using 5% of the MM (as is done with another mod if you want to be ready for all tiers) it's vastly preferable.

And as stated above reusing baddies cuts down on word count, allowing for more background instead of reprinting the same, or similar, information time and again.

james maissen wrote:
Remember? Was this even said somewhere? I figure it was going to be no item creation period..

Pathfinder is reworking how item creation will be done. That was the reason for not allowing item creation in PFS. Granted item creation may indeed be left out of PFS in the end, but I get the feeling Paizo is satisfied with their efforts and will release that into PFS.

'It also removes some of the incentive to play at the highest tier of a module (for all the access) and the like, which, imho, should not exist at all. Tiers should simply be where the party will be comfortable playing.'

So then no matter what tier the party plays they should find the +3 sword that's only used in the 8-9 tier?

Personally I'd like to see more favors, connections, etc... in the end, but I could do without the bizarre useless crap.
