Yah! This is totally going to own! Can't wait to check it out!

Nilgaar (Male Human Fighter 2/Sorcerer 1)

Vencarlo Orinsini

Nilgaar is at 0 hit points. I still get one petty action, sucka!

Knowing he has lost, but just evil enough to make someone hurt a lot before he goes, he slashes Logan's pretty face with his chain as he shouts, "You filthy sum'biches!!!"

Attack on Logan: 1d20+4=20, 2d4+3=9, an otherwise great hit, but not enough to do more than graze his smirking goody-goody face.

With that Nilgaar spits and froths in impotent rage as he falls unconscious.

Victory is your's, Team Good! Congratulations! But evil will be back, you can be sure ;) BTW, maybe next time Invisible Castle will favor the other team as much as it favored you rat bastards!

I don't care for it much, either. That leaves just me! He can't even make a stabilization roll until next round since he only dropped this round, he has two enemies that can easily coup de grace him, and I'm too busy trying to save my own arse to try and feed a potion to him. Just sayin'.

Nilgaar (Male Human Fighter 2/Sorcerer 1)

Vencarlo Orinsini

Since Garash is bleeding out and his animal companion, even if it avoided all of the AOOs attempting to drag his friend to safety, is still under a fear affect, and doesn't have healing abilities anyway. I'm pretty much stimied if I tried to help him. So, I think we can skip past Garash right to Logan.

"Looks like the odds're agins' me. Nilgaar still has a few tricks, though."

Nilgaar makes a 5-ft. step to O-5, pulls out his scroll of ray of enfeeblement, and casts it at Vanin who is just within range.

ray of enfeeblement (1d20+4=23). The ray goes zinging at him and hits him right in the crotch!! The damage is low... strength penalty (1d6+1=3) But, hey, it's something.

Nilgaar drops the scroll and quickly takes his chain in both hands, ready for the next assault that could be his death, grinning his sharp-toothed smile back and forth to his remaining opponents, ready to go to his death, but eager to take someone with him.

I need a judgment call from the Arenamaster. Logan has moved through a threatened square to reach Nilgaar, who still held his chain in one hand while he used his scroll on his last action. Technically, Nilgaar still threatens the squares around him, though if he makes an attack, it has to be with his primary hand since he has the scroll in his off-hand. I can't really find anything that specifically talks about attacking with a two-handed weapon with one hand, though the crossbow suggests that you can, but with a -2 penalty (a weapon that is normally used two-handed).

So, 1) does Nilgaar get an AOO? and 2) what penalty do you want to impose? My own thoughts were a -2 on the attack roll and just his regular strength modifier for damage since he isn't able to use it two-handed for 1 1/2 times damage.

I would say that using a two handed melee weapon one handed could either not be done, or would suffer a –4 non-proficiency penalty.

On the other hand, in my game I would rule that as part of the AOO you could drop the (expended) scroll to grasp the weapon in both hands to make the attack. After all, if you chose to attack with your chain on your next turn, you would not need to declare that you were dropping the used up scroll to take your chain in both hands and attack, you would just say “I attack with the chain”. IMO, it should be the same in this situation.
Of course, I freely admit that this logic helps my team, and the Arena Master may see things completely different.

Actually, the penalty for using a heavy crossbow more closely equates to using the spiked chain with one hand. Like you suggested, Mothman, it incurs a -4 penalty. Both are largish weapons so that feels about right, IMO.

If False Arenamaster allows it, here is my attack roll with that penalty in mind and only using my normal Strength modifier as if I was using a normal one-handed weapon in my primary hand:
Nilgaar's AOO on Logan. The -4 penalty offsets the normal +4 attack bonuses. (1d20+0=3, 2d4+2=9)

"Damn! That was ugly! Almost as ugly as how your face is gonna look in a moment," as Nilgaar discards the spent scroll and grips his chain in both hands to make a better attack a few seconds later.

I'm heading to bed and didn't want to delay anyone's actions in case Fakey does allow my AOO (which missed anyway). If not allowed, just skip this action as if it never happened.

tdewitt274 has been hypnotized by 4th edition... :-(

Yeah, I know. I'm complaining in general (not at you), hoping the right ears (eyes in this case) see it and update it.
By my take, Vanin is at I7-J8, Rurin is at J9, Logan is (now) at Q7, Garash is at K7, Nilgar is at Q6 and Bitey is at T1 (or elsewhere at the Arena Master’s discretion). Does that sound right to everyone?

That sounds about right to me.

Nilgaar (Male Human Fighter 2/Sorcerer 1)

Vencarlo Orinsini

"Ha! Nice one, Garash! Yer next, you smelly leperkawn," Nilgaar growls at Rurin, "but fer now the furball's gettin' it!"

Nilgaar (Male Human Fighter 2/Sorcerer 1)

Vencarlo Orinsini

Here's the roll for Rurin. I entered a damage value as well, though it won't come in to play. 1d20+5=15, 1d2+1=2

Nilgaar (Male Human Fighter 2/Sorcerer 1)

Vencarlo Orinsini

"Garash! Move up on him before he arms himself again. We can take him down together!"

Nilgaar (Male Human Fighter 2/Sorcerer 1)

Vencarlo Orinsini

Nilgaar pulls out his scroll of grease and casts the spell on Vanin's oversized chain. Vanin needs to make a DC 11 Reflex save or he drops it. The effect only lasts one round, but it ends on my turn on the following round.

"Let's see how you do with a buttered up weapon, furball!"

Nilgaar then takes a 5-foot step to Q-6.

Nilgaar (Male Human Fighter 2/Sorcerer 1)

Vencarlo Orinsini

So can we get an updated arena map?

Nilgaar (Male Human Fighter 2/Sorcerer 1)

Vencarlo Orinsini

"Stupid big fat fur ball!!! Ye'r goin' down!"

"Garash, looks like it's just you n' me."

Nilgaar (Male Human Fighter 2/Sorcerer 1)

Vencarlo Orinsini

"It appears I'm still in the game. Well, now... it looks like the odds are even once again."

Great to be home again! Gen Con was a blast and meeting all the friends I've made on these boards was awesome. Fakey, thanks for running Nilgaar like I asked. Well done.

Nilgaar (Male Human Fighter 2/Sorcerer 1)

Vencarlo Orinsini

Last post of the week. Heading to bed and that's it.

For False Arenamaster:

Spoiler:
With the new positioning of everyone, Nilgaar moves to square O-7 to cast his burning hands spell at Heinrich. It will effect N 8,9,10; M 8,9; and L8 (Heinrich's square). You have the rolls from my previous post. Nilgaar will try to cast the next spell similarly (get Heinrich, but not my guys). After the second spell, Nilgaar drinks his healing potion(s).

Have fun!

Nilgaar (Male Human Fighter 2/Sorcerer 1)

Vencarlo Orinsini

Nilgaar makes his save - (1d20+3=21).

Spoiler:
Now why won't this cheater dice roller let me have these kind of rolls when attacking!?

Nilgaar (Male Human Fighter 2/Sorcerer 1)

Vencarlo Orinsini

"Mph! Argh! You sum'bich! Ye'r gonna pay for that!"

::Nilgar's blood begins to boil with anger and he feels something hot and blistering wanting to burst out with rage at Heinrich::

I will be leaving to Gen Con tomorrow morning and won't be back until Sunday night, so today will probably be my last in this arena fight, unless Nilgaar has somehow survived for 5 days without me.

To False Arenamaster only:

Spoiler:
If I don't get a chance to take my next turn, Nilgaar casts burning hands at Heinrich as he froths and spits in uncontrollable rage for a moment until the spell passes.
Arcane Spell Failure Chance 15% (1d100=38)
His spell succeeds and deals 6 fire damage --> Burning Hands (correct roll) (2d4=6)

Heinrich needs to make a DC 13 Reflex save for half. If he fails, he takes full damage and catches fire. See the SRD for rules on catching fire.

Nilgaar does the same thing the next round, moving to pursue Heinrich if necessary, but staying at the spell's end of range so as not to provoke an AOO. Therafter his 1st level spell slots are done.
He uses his spiked chain thereafter, but no more charging because it messes up his accuracy.

Hope Nilgaar survives and thanks for letting me play! :)

Nilgaar (Male Human Fighter 2/Sorcerer 1)

Vencarlo Orinsini

"Now it's fun time!"

Nilgaar charges Heinrich, ending his movement in 0-6. He has a -2 to AC, but +2 to his attack roll.
1d20+6=17, 2d4+3=8
Whacks him with the chain, but doesn't draw blood.

Nilgaar (Male Human Fighter 2/Sorcerer 1)

Vencarlo Orinsini

Nilgar gets to his feet letting his crossbow dangle from the Lanyard attached to it and moves further into the arena while uncoiling his chain, grapsing it in both hands, and taking a few teasing swings with it before he gets to R-2.

"Watch them doors, boys!" he yells to his allies still standing. "Holy pig crap! That was a wicked hit! Looks like, ol' Sparky may be done for."

For False Arenamaster only:

Spoiler:
I've always used Lanyards in my games, leather straps attached to light and hand crossbows to allow you let go of it and let it dangle from your belt without having to leave it behind or drop it when your in a rush to switch weapons. However, it's not the PHB, so if you don't want to allow it, I'm good with that. If that's the case, Nilgaar lets it drop in S-3 right before arming himself with his spiked chain.

Nilgaar (Male Human Fighter 2/Sorcerer 1)

Vencarlo Orinsini

Nilgaar curses to himself, "What new wrinkle have we got here?! Some cowardly double cross?!"

Yelling to his closest allies, "Garash, Jathali, there's somethin' comin' outta these doors. I can hear it! Be ready!"

Nilgaar (Male Human Fighter 2/Sorcerer 1)

Vencarlo Orinsini

"Finish the priest, Spartacus!"

Nilgaar (Male Human Fighter 2/Sorcerer 1)

Vencarlo Orinsini

This is gettin' all kinds'a interestin'!

Nilgaar (Male Human Fighter 2/Sorcerer 1)

Vencarlo Orinsini

"Well, will you look at that?! One of 'em is gittin his balls up. Time to draw some blood!" ::grins evilly::

Nilgaar (Male Human Fighter 2/Sorcerer 1)

Vencarlo Orinsini

Nilgaar is going to go ahead and take his turn. Whether or not Spartacus stays in his saddle shouldn't effect his action, only the position of him and his horse providing soft cover for Vanin.

Nilgar quickly reloads and aims at a portion of Vanin that seems to be less blocked by Spartacus and his horse (square D-10). (This prevents any penalties for firing into a melee since that square is 10 feet away from Vanin's opponent.)

"Come on, baby... hit this time."

CLICK!

1d20+5=9, 1d8=3

"Dammit!"
Nilgaar is disgusted with his crossbow and starts going through the motions of getting to his feet and stowing the worthless item. (Stands next round on his turn)

To his teammates near him:

Spoiler:
"We should move up and surround 'em. Mow down one of them dummies atta time. What d'ya'all think?"

Nilgaar (Male Human Fighter 2/Sorcerer 1)

Vencarlo Orinsini

Waiting for False Arenamaster to update the situation with Spartacus before taking my turn...

Nilgaar (Male Human Fighter 2/Sorcerer 1)

Vencarlo Orinsini

"Har! M' teammate beat me to it! Aww, he's a smart one, he is!"

Nilgaar (Male Human Fighter 2/Sorcerer 1)

Vencarlo Orinsini

"Hey, Spartacus! Looks like none of them likes ya too much. He he! I say take that oversized furball Kord worshipper out with a good hit with that long stick of yer's."

Nilgaar (Male Human Fighter 2/Sorcerer 1)

Vencarlo Orinsini

"Garash, indeed they seem to be," Nilgaar says over his shoulder as he reloads his crossbow and takes aim at the suddenly BIG (and easier to hit) priest of Kord. "And timid as well. Look at the others how they cower inside the arena doors!"

K-CHUNK!

Nilgaar fires another bolt at Vanin, aiming at his furry face...

1d20+5=10, 1d8=5 ...and it streaks just past his right ear up into the stands.

"Aww, pig balls! That priest is a wee bit tough to hit, ain't he?"

Nilgaar (Male Human Fighter 2/Sorcerer 1)

Vencarlo Orinsini

"Jathali, it's the nerves, brother! Just settle yourself. Evil will prevail today cuz Good is dumb!"

Nilgaar grins his toothy smile at the do-gooders starting to emerge from the other side of the arena as he prepares to make his next move.

This round is moving pretty quick. Hope it keeps up!

"Oh, and nice shot, Jathali. Next time try for someone inside of the arena, though.

Nilgaar (Male Human Fighter 2/Sorcerer 1)

Vencarlo Orinsini

"Let's see how that uppity priest blathers with a crossbow bolt in him," Nilgaar mutters as he takes a couple steps into the arena and drops onto his stomach, takes aim at Vanin with his crossbow and fires.

1d20+5=6, 1d8=5

"Dammit! Missed!"

While prone Nilgaar has +4 to his AC against ranged attacks. Nilgaar is now in square X-5.

Nilgaar (Male Human Fighter 2/Sorcerer 1)

Vencarlo Orinsini

"About time! I hope them do-gooders enjoyed a nice comfy night of rest since it'll be the last they enjoy in this world."

::Spoken to the spiked chain wrapped around his cloth-bound left forearm and trailing down to ground, "Drink deeply today, my trusty friend."::

Nilgar starts at Y-4.

Spoiler:
Nilgar's first action is to cast shield which ups his AC to 20, or 19 if making a melee attack.
Initiative: 1d20=7+6=13
