Backstory, with LOTS of spoilers for Shackles! don't click unless you're well into book 4!!!:

Narsius was once known by another name, but after surviving a keelhauling at the hands of one Mr. Plugg, the infamous Wormwood's First Mate, he changed his name and adopted the disguise of a human, hiding his half-elf lineage carefully by keeping his hair almost shoulder-length. His survival of that traumatic event left many scars, the most prominent of which can be seen clearly straight across his left cheek. Despite having successfully taken his revenge on Plugg, he now maintains the disguise as some kind of rite of passage, and now refuses to look back at his past before the incident. Since the dire events he remains extremely wary of any stranger and he has been unable to fully trust anyone outside his immediate circle of officers.

Not much is known of Narsius except that he possess some skill in the crafting of gunpowder and shipbuilding, and lately, his fellow crewmates onboard the Kraken's Fury witnessed him contribute to major ship upgrades while the vessel was in dry docks, suggesting a certain early life of toiling in dockyards. He previously served as one of the officers of the Kraken's Fury in the position of Master Gunner, and he is still on the lookout for the potential addition of rare gunpowder cannons for the ship's weapon ports. After conducting battle drills with the ship's gunning crews at Tidewater Rock, he passed the gunner's mantle to one of his marines and assume the title of Captain after the departure of Captain Bronn Burlesson. Since then he has progressively detached himself from the rest of the crew to focus on navigation, naval battle drills and logistics. The day to day running of the ship and discipline of the crew has fallen into the capable hands of Sandara, who stands at the helm whenever Narsius is not, her piloting skills nowadays a match for Narsius'. On the rare occasions that Narsius is seen with the rest of crew, he always seems agitated, worried, and constantly looks over his shoulder, a hand always close to one of his pistols... and thus it is not very long before he is seen to hurriedly retreat into his cabin.

One thing that can be said with certainty about Narsius is this: he holds unswerving devotion to Besmara, the Pirate Queen, for some unknown reason, and he can be observed doing his daily devotion on the Kraken's Fury's forecastle, kneeling while leaning on his rapier, with his pet cormorant named Commodore perched nearby. During this time of devotion, no one is allowed on the foc'sle, and two marines guard the stairs leading from the main deck. Lately things have taken a turn for the worse it seems, as Narsius has brought a host of undead skeletal pirates along with him on the forecastle, which he controls with a strange glowing amulet... this has unnerved several members of the crew and led to whispers throughout the ship... it is even said that two riggers have noticed strange magics surrounding him when he utters tenebrous prayers in the dark to the Pirate Queen, and he now seems hellbent in destroying and purging 'undeserving pirates' from the Shackles, which is a departure from his past eagerness to capture pirates for profit or service.
