Oh well, not the games day I'm looking for then.

Don't forget, May 30th is also Tabletop day at Wyvern's Tale. So we'll need to run some games that aren't Pathfinder.

If someone runs a game of Dresden Files, I'll end my 6 month streak of non-attendance to play in it.

I'd also be slightly tempted to offer to GM a run-through of the new Star Wars RPG Beginner Game, but I think that adventure probably needs a 6-hour slot.

Well, well, someone in APL just got some well-deserved recognition from Mr. Brock.

Congrats, Captain Dinketry.

(Now for the rest of you, go over there and say nice things about Dinketry. Immediately.)

Congrats, Paul!

You've done an excellent job getting and keeping PFS going here in Asheville. Keeping being a very important part.

Not long after PFS got going here in Asheville, the FLGS we were meeting at closed down. I seem to recall we found out about this about five days before our next scheduled meeting. Well Paul ran around like mad and found us another place to meet, so we never missed a session. We'd already lost two weeks to winter holidays, so if we'd missed that first session back in January, we could've lost momentum entirely.

But we didn't, gaming was saved, and now we've gone from about 10 players at that first meeting in December 2011, to regular turnouts of I'm guessing around 30 or so.

I could also say lots of nice things about his GMing, but I gotta save something to say as he gains additional GM stars.

(Though for the Tri-Cities folks, or anywhere else Paul might turn up as a Special Guest Star: make him run Frostfur Captives. You won't regret it.)

You're quite welcome, Tansarff. I'm not playing today, but I hope to see you next weekend, or at a future session.

By the way, welcome to the Asheville Pathfinder Lodge.

Frost Giant and Tansarff, let me refer both of you to the Warhorn site for APL, which is where the schedule is kept. It's also where you can sign up for games.

Most of the time we meet at Wyvern's Tale on Merrimon Avenue. Main sessions are every other week. The next few are:

August 18

September 1
September 15
September 29

For those weeks we have a "morning" session that starts at 12:30 pm, and an evening session that starts at 5:30 pm.

Folks often run games during off-weeks and through the week as well.

There is a game scheduled for this evening at 5pm, being run by Granyt. Warhorn only shows two people signed up. So there should be room for both of you guys.

How will folks who get to play in the game be determined?

Sounds like Monte's gonna be running his new science-fantasy game, Numenera. As a fan of science-fantasy, my biggest hope is that the players wind up folks who kind of dislike science-fantasy. Then they play the game, Monte wins them over, and they become ambassadors locally for both Numenera and the science-fantasy genre.

Regardless, this is an amazing get, Nillic. Well done!

((First game = ALL the mistakes! ^o^ ))

Here's a suggestion for that. Run it before the 25th for a group of trusted players, make all your mistakes in THAT session, then hit it out of the park when you run it at UNCA on the 25th.

If one of those players happened to be an experienced PFS GM who could give you some constructive feedback after the session, all the better.

(I was fortunate enough to have Dink as a player in my wobbly first session GMing PFS. His feedback afterwards went a long way to making sure my second session went much more smoothly. Not to imply your first session will be wobbly.)

Roughly how many pages is the section on mundane equipment?

(The answer may help me decide whether to go for PDF or print.)

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I'm still digesting the changes, but I love the new look. From the cover all the way to the end, the Guide looks like a full-blown Paizo product now.

I also really like the new Quick Start Guide. I'm gonna keep a couple of copies in my PFS notebook to give to folks who have never played PFS but are interested. I do wish my name and e-mail address wasn't stamped on the Quick Start Guide, but that's easily fixed with a Sharpie.

Zebaroth, as stated in the blog post, the new rules take effect August 16th.

dinketry wrote:
a) You may take 10 on a Day Job Roll.

I like this a lot. It makes those vanities that let you use skills other than Craft, Perform, or Profession for Day Jobs slightly more appealing. It makes gnomes slightly more appealing. It may lead to greater acceptance and use of the Take 10 rule in general, which could speed up play a bit.

I don't think anyone's mentioned the rebuild rules yet. See page 10 of the new Guide for the details. In a nutshell, you can change anything except the character's PFS number until the first time you play the character at 2nd level.

The new Quick Start Guide is *really* nice too. I may print out a few copies, mark through my e-mail address, and keep them in my PFS notebook to give to new players.

Hey guys, I got published by Paizo!

It's only five uncredited sentences, but compare the contents of this post by me to the contents of page 23 of the 4.2 Pathfinder Society Guide to Organized Play, under the heading "Prestige". They added one sentence to my suggested text, but otherwise didn't change my posted text by a single character.

Keovar wrote:
A save and an attack are essentially the same thing, just reversing the static and dynamic components. Defense is active in the case of saves, but passive in the case of attacks. A character has the option to concede their defense. While someone generally wouldn't resist a cure wounds spell and would try to resist inflict wounds, and a vampire will generally choose to do the opposite, there's nothing stopping either from allowing or trying to resist either. Unless someone wants to consider you a threat, they can drop their AC-based guard in that way too. If the assumption were that people default to keeping their guard up for an allies' spells, the same would be true of the allies' physical threat potential. The 'friend' behind you would inadvertently grant a flanking bonus to the enemy in front of you.

Makes sense to me. Course it would, that's how I want it to work. :-)

So here's a rules question. I'm looking at Reach Spell from the APG.

Reach Spell:
Reach Spell (Metamagic)

Your spells go farther than normal.

Benefit: You can alter a spell with a range of touch, close, or medium to increase its range to a higher range category, using the following order: touch, close, medium, and long. A reach spell uses up a spell slot one level higher than the spell's actual level for each increase in range category. For example, a spell with a range of touch increased to long range uses up a spell slot three levels higher. Spells modified by this feat that require melee touch attacks instead require ranged touch attacks.

Spells that do not have a range of touch, close, or medium do not benefit from this feat.

My reading of the feat is that if I take it for my cleric, I can memorize (in a 2nd level spell slot) Cure Light Wounds, Magic Weapon, or any other 1st level spell with a range of "Touch", then cast it from a distance of up to 25 feet + 5 feet per 2 full caster levels.

Question is: if my cleric casts a spell modified by this feat on an ally, does it require a ranged touch attack?

What the question seems to hinge on is whether using a touch spell on an ally normally requires a melee touch attack. If it does, then Reach Spell turns it into a ranged touch attack. If it doesn't, then a Reach Spell on an ally shouldn't require an attack roll either.

Spent another fun day at the Asheville Pathfinder Lodge. The roleplaying was particularly excellent today.

Thanks for the answers, Jake.

The sleep-loving side of me (which also wants everyone else to be well-rested) was hoping you didn't game at 5am, but the crazy "game anywhere, game anytime, game any way" side of me was hoping you had.

Four questions:

1. Is Shades of Ice getting the same treatment as Quest For Perfection did, where all the parts are going to be run multiple times?

2. Does anyone know yet which Intro is going to be run on August 4th?

3. Is there still the possibility of a game for this weekend, either Saturday or Sunday?

4. Jake, did you really run a game yesterday at 5 AM? Or is that a typo on the Warhorn?

It's July, I say we game outdoors.

This is a serious suggestion, not one of my trademark smart-alec posts.

Congrats, SP! I still remember back in January when you turned up expecting to play and when we need another GM, you stepped up and instead ran Echoes of the Overwatched cold. You absolutely knocked it out of the park. I was impressed then, and having since GMed, I'm more impressed now.

Had a blast again, folks. Thanks to Zlyph for GMing the very fun Crypt of the Everflame. Also thanks to the Smash (or is it Bash or Crash?) Brothers, Keovar, Sonne, and Aly for being fun folks to game with, and for being tolerant of the cowardly little gnome merchant who didn't know he was a cleric.

I've said it before, but it's worth repeating: We have really excellent gamers in this group.

The Zyrtec did wonders, thanks Dink!

Since I'm apparently not contagious, I've signed up the Everflame slot that Aravandor vacated. That group looks like it's in bad need of a cleric, so I'm bringing Dodeka.

You might be on to something with the allergies thing, Dink. I'll take a Zyrtec and see if it helps. Though unless we're discussing Neil Young, I'd like less of the "old man" talk thankyouverymuch. :-) (And if we are, it probably needs to be elsewhere, and with the volume cranked up.) Oh and I love the obits. I hope you'll keep doing them.

I did wind up fiddling around with some flyer designs last night. There are three of them, intended for three different purposes, available here. None of them feels like they're right to me. Any feedback or suggestions would be appreciated.

Cold symptoms came back, so I'm not gonna make it out this weekend. While I will probably feel well enough to play, I don't wanna risk getting other folks sick. Advanced warning though, for August 4th, I'm playing Shades of Ice, no matter what nasty, contagious bug I might have.

Also, is anyone working on text/fonts for the flyers? I've been kicking around some ideas, but haven't come up with anything I like yet. If other folks are working on them, I'll gladly defer.

zylphryx wrote:
I think there are 9 that are listed as retired (it shows under the price of the pdf).

Ahh... those I knew about. The way I read Luth's comment, I thought there were additional Season 0 scenarios slated to be retired in the near future.

Before anyone puts in too much work on a flyer, I remembered that VC Stephen White from Australia had done up some very nice-looking flyers that we could use. Over in this thread Mr. White even provides some suggestions for how to make use of them.

He's done quite a few designs, so I'd suggest we pick a very few of them and do different text for each one. I was thinking maybe one lady (other than Seoni), one dude, and one monster. Or maybe stick to the CRB pregens, so if someone sees a flyer, they can actually play the character they see.

Well whaddayaknow, there is some green in there, despite the best efforts of my monitor to hide it.

Seeing as how I'm a greenie again, that means I don't have to GM again for another 3d4 ⇒ (1, 4, 4) = 9 months, right? :-)

Luthril wrote:

Oh, I hadn't heard that. Is there a list somewhere of the ones being retired?

Heads up to all the GMs who might be considering running a scenario from Season 0, 1, or 2 in the near future. Until August 13th, they're all on sale for $1 off as part of Paizo's 10th Anniversary Sale. There are a bunch of non-PFS-specific items on sale too.

ObscureLego, I will be running Intro Step Part 3 in the early slot this coming Friday (as we played Intro Steps 1 and 2 this past weekend). We may be able to get Intro Step 2 going for you in the afternoon slot if we have more Greenies.

I'm no greenie, but if I feel up to playing this weekend, I'd like to get in on Intro 2. I've only played Intro 3, and I kind of like the idea of playing the series in backwards order.

AlyGlows wrote:
Uhhh skype? ^_^; If the internet was a bit more stable...

That's a good idea, though with current technology, even with a stable connection, I suspect having a remote player would slow the game down too much for a regular PFS session.

Paizo did recently announce plans for a Virtual Table Top. Combining Paizo's VTT with Skype and running a PFS game where everyone plays online certainly seems possible in the near-ish future. Aside from opening gaming opportunities to folks who have difficulty making in-person meetings, it might also make for an okay backup plan in case a winter gaming session is snowed out sometime.

In any case, playing by remote was really only wishful dreaming, not something I had any expectation of making happen. My main reason for including that paragraph was to hype Zylph's game in the hope that it will be a success and that there will be more modules run that way in the future.

Well I've come down with another flipping cold. Dunno when or if I'll be back gaming. I love gaming with you guys, but this pattern of getting sick three to four days after a game session is the reason I haven't been around for several months. To get sick again on my first session back feels like a bad omen.

(Zylph running Crypt of the Everflame makes me wish I could play from remote via hologram. I've heard great things about that module, and not having to fuss with those annoying faction missions would be awesome. I envy everyone who ends up in that game.)

Oh and Dink, congrats on your first GM star. I've had the good fortune to play at your table twice, and can honestly say you're one of the best GMs I've ever gamed with. If stars were awarded based on quality of GMing rather than quantity, you'd have way more than 1 star.

Here are the valid level ranges for the scenarios currently posted on Warhorn.

The Citadel of Flame - Levels 1-5

The Icebound Outpost - Levels 1-5

First Steps I - Level 1 only
First Steps II - Level 1 only
First Steps III - Level 1 only

Storming the Diamond Gate - Levels 3-7

You must've fixed it, because I just signed up for one of the Intros.

Also, for the benefit of anyone like me who is sensitive about using their real name online, beware that Warhorn lists your REAL name on event slots, not your user name.

Since there's no fee involved to play PFS, I used a pseudonym when I signed up.

This post for the implanted ioun stones.

Inner Sea World Guide pg 299 for the Wayfinder. Possibly other sources as well. I know the Wayfinder's been reprinted a few times.

And seeing as it's you Aravandor, as payment for this information, I shall require 5 SASEs and a ginger ale. Please do not spill the ginger ale on the SASEs.

Thanks for the great games, folks. Stu and Jake especially for GMing the games I was in. Yesterday's double-session made for a fun return from my exile in tired-of-catching-colds-burg.

BTW, this holiday boon can be applied until July 23rd, so anyone who doesn't get one this time should have a chance to pick one up at our next Saturday session.

Careful of the precedent you set. I already have a Vudrani character. I could easily bring my CDs of sitar music.... :-)

On a more serious note (which is not directed just at Goon), since no else has mentioned it, I'll point out that there's a new holiday boon available. Anyone who wants to take advantage of the boon, just needs to bring a printout of it with them and have their GM fill it out like any other Chronincle sheet.

No worries. Hope you get a chance to make your GMing debut soon.

I don't mind new GMs at all.

However I've already played Frostfur Captives. I checked, and replay (for no credit) is allowed if two conditions are met:

1. There aren't otherwise enough players for a legal table
2. The GM is okay with a player replaying

If we meet those conditions, I'd be happy to replay Frostfur Captives.

Yeah, I was gonna suggest a Sunday start time of no later than 3 pm, in case we need the full five hours.

Course it might not matter for this weekend, since no one's volunteered to GM. I'd volunteer, but I need at least a week's notice to get a scenario prepped.

Sunday afternoon is the best time for gaming for me, so if there are enough folks interested, I'd love to try to get regular Sunday sessions going. Assuming the space isn't booked for another group. Don't wanna wear out our welcome.

If it all works out, I'd be willing to GM some of the time.

ben schweizbach wrote:

I'd be interested.

Yeah, the Google Doc is in place already. A wiki could be set up pretty quickly, but I don't think we wanna press the GO button on one before more folks have had a chance to weigh in on the idea.

Plus, to answer Thorynn's question, I've seen mention several times of APL getting our own website. Media Wiki, which Wikipedia and a lot of others wikis run on, is available under a freeware open source license. So I was thinking if we went with a wiki we should install Media Wiki on a domain we control.

That method isn't as instant as creating one on a wiki service, but we wouldn't have to put up with advertisements either. However, we might have to find and install extensions to have some of the features I mentioned previously.

Though if we did go with a wiki service, Wikia is the only one I've used. So I don't know the advantages, disadvatages, and available features of any others.

Editing, on Wikia anyway, can be done in Visual mode now, so editing your name into an existing table is no more difficult than typing your name on any other website.

Far as the advantages vs Google Docs, I haven't used Google Docs. Last time I tried a few years ago, it didn't play nice with Opera.

Far as advantages generally, a wiki would decentralize responsibility for administering signs-ups without decentralizing their location.

It would also be a nice middle ground between something like Warhorn, and posting to the messageboard. Wikia has comments that appear right on the pages, rather than Talk Pages that are a click away. If we allowed anons to post comments but not to edit pages, then someone who didn't want to create an account could still sign up for a game by posting a comment like "This is Joe Smith, I wanna play in Luth's 5pm Meatgrinder of Death scenario."

Other advantages is that each event could have its own page. So we could have sign-ups open for multiple events at the same time. This could help work towards planning things far enough in advance to get scenario support from Paizo.

Each event having its own page would have another advantage. GMs could look at past event pages to see what scenarios have been run recently, and use that to help decide what to run in the future.

There's also the fact that if someone comes in and trashes the page, accidentally or maliciously, it's very easy to undo the damage.

Aside from the uses in sign-ups, I also think a wiki might be a viable option for a website for APL. There's a serviceable messageboard functionality built-in, a blog feature, and most of all, it lets the work of creating and maintaining pages be easily divided among multiple people.

Hmmm.... if we're gonna have a sign-up page that anyone can edit, what about using a wiki instead?

Luthril wrote:
I think folks should still be able to signup here on the boards and the GM running that game should be able to keep track of those names and add them to the list as it is posted... Just a thought... Of course as a group we should remain flexible and accommodate noobs when ever they show. Yes I know noobs is a derogatory term but if the shoe fits....

I think that system was workable when there were only two or three tables, but I saw something about there being six tables last week. That's a LOT of people potentially posting in this thread to sign up for games. In all that volume of posts it would be really easy to miss a sign up request.

I'd suggest using Warhorn or a similar site and slotting all the tables for 5 players. We would still actually seat up to 6 players per table on game day, but we'd have built in some room to accommodate new folks, walk-ins, etc. Though I don't think it would eliminate the need to have extra GMs on call in case turnout drastically exceeds expectations.

I know this group has been loose and informal since the beginning. It'll be a culture shock to get more structured, but if the growth continues at even a fraction of the pace I'm hearing it has lately, it's going to be necessary.

Many of you young whippersnappers are getting into Pathfinder via "We be goblins" nowadays. Back in my day when the APL was just forming at Blitzkreig (or "The FLGS Which Is No More" as I like to call it), there was none of this cavorting around setting things afire getting eaten by spiders and terrorizing horses. My first Pathfinder scenario was Frostfur Captives masterfully GMed by Dink. After all the other scenarios I've played it is still one of my all time favorites. All I can say is: Woe be it to the Pathfinder who does not treat the bloodthirsty pyromaniacal lunatic Frostfurs with the paranoia they so richly deserve. If you don't love this scenario then you need help.

Yeah, that was a great session. One of the best gaming sessions I've had in 20-odd years of gaming. Dinketry's a great GM, and Frostfur obviously plays to his strengths. Only having four players helped too.

The folks who're playing this tomorrow should be in for a treat.

Looks like July 7th will be the next session I'm gonna make it to. Hopefully I'll still remember how to play Pathfinder by then.

I hope things go well at the new store, and that whoever was bringing the cold germs to Hillside doesn't become a regular at Wyvern's Tale. :-)
