its not the same to take prisioners than to take slaves...

"don't initiate combat if another path seems open..." like knocking out the criminal and taking him to the closest authorities :P

Varthana... i couldn't agree more...

on topic! about paladin codes! and elts forget world politics :P

Interesting quick article

ok 2 societies that had the oenalty of death for rapists... Sunni's, who did not ascribed any sin for the victim nor any punishment... and Hebrew who have legislature deppending where did it happened... if inside a city, then both of them were stonned to death (supposedly if in the city the woman would have run or cried for help), if outside the city the rapist will have to pay the girl's full price (a yes, old society and the custom of selling their daughters for money... well established in the Bible if i remember well) and will marry her... if the victim was promised to another man, then the rapist was stonned to death... if SHE was married.. well then both were stonned to death... somehow it was considered adultery and gthe victim was considered broken goods.

fortunately this days we are more civiliced than that...

:)

Pardon me Spacelard, but that sounds an awful lot like you are allowing "today's moral attitude mixed up with that of historical or fantasy worlds". 1925 is very recent for historical purposes, especially when most compare medieval times and fantasy settings.

Also, America has been known to be ultra-conservative at times (prohibition..), where as most of Europe is a little more liberal.

Can you come up with any other countries?

well Mistwalker, considering you asked specifically:

Mistwalker wrote:
Ah, but can you list any countries that have the death penalty for rape? Either current or a repealed law? Wikepedia is fine but is not always 100% accurate.

Spacelard's answer is 100% correct... you didn't asked for historial countries laws :P

Besides Iomedae would support dead penalty 100% for rapist, or in considering its an unfair law, she will consider taking away the tool used for such vile crime.

For gods and goddess that would condone raping please visit Gorum, Lamashtu, Urgothoa, Zon-kuthon (provided there is some bondage or torturing included) and possibly Gozreh (he/she is a true god of nature)

Cayden Caydean would look down on any male that depends on suck vile acts... not for being vile.. but because a true hero (using greek concept of hero, who is not who do goodthings, but great things) wouldn't need suck acts tobed the wench he prefers.

Again Erastil as LG and patron of the family would look down in the man who did that kind of thing... man is not an animal who lives in pure incstint... and man as family man does need to avail and respect the roots of family... rape goes well beyond that...

and the follower of Asmodeous who requires to rape someone is no true tricksters, same goes for followers of Calistria.

for mythical referencies its varied...

for example Zeuz (chief rapist) went free because he was the father of the gods and no one would oppose him.. still his wife will torture Zeuz's victims and progenie...

While Adonis who said was abetter hunter than Artemisa and found her once naked and took advantage of her, was murdered latter by her using either her hunting dogs or a wild boar as a venguance for such threatment.

If a paladin come on a man raping a woman, the paladin should be allowed to immediately kill the man. As a dishonourable opponent he need not be treated honourably, and stopping the evil act is a good act.
Doesnt this, along with everything else, depend not on the class but on the paladin's patron deity? I might see this being true for many paladins, but for example, in -my- version of Golarion (and YMMV), a Paladin of Erastil wouldn't look twice at such things. Its simply a virile male doing what virile males do, its how the natural world works, and its the just order of nature's laws. Erastil is an old school **** like that in my campaign. Just dont steal someone's cow.

not true...

Erastil is a family man...
a man raping a woman its just abusing her
that is not an act of a good man, nor a good father, nor a good husband...
Erastil's paladin will take him by the hair and with his knuckles show with what a man is made of...

and NO a Paladin would not kill a raper found in the act... that doesn't mean he wont strike him, maim him (remebering Hardigan "I took his weapon, I took his other weapon too") and then give him to the authorities... making sure he is judged fairly and hanged as he should, acting as witness and making sure the beast receives the full payments for his crime.

being a Paladin doesn't equal to being the law of a place... so murdering a rapist in the streets, even when its theebst for the world... is in the end a crime in itself.

Ryan Machan wrote:

For example, let's take the first one. Must heal all those who ask for it. There's some good intent here, but also some potential for abuse by you as the DM. A wicked creature who has learned of the Paladin's code may use it against them to preserve themselves. A completely irredeemable creature, the very essence of wickedness and suffereing, and to whome the Paladin should respond with all the vigour of attacking a cancer, can say 'Mercy! Heal me!'. What situation does this place the Paladin in now?

Perhaps you never use this as a DM, but it may well weigh on your player's mind in the background anyways, and take the fun out of things. A Paladin is, after all, a warrior. We can never ignore the fact that the class represents great martial training and dedication, unlike a Cleric which can go either way. There must be an avenue which allows the viewing of wicked things as cancerous, having no place in the world, and deserving of destruction, no matter what tools such a being might use in the Paladin's own code against them.

Easy solution for Paladin PC

"Surrender then and be subject to my mercy, my honor ask me to heal you... but that same honor doesn't bind my alies, nor I am a fool. surrender, be repentant and I will save your live"

then when the vile enemy has surrendered and is in chains... then the paladin heals him... paladin doesn't equal stupid :P in the middle of a combat if the evil one ask for mercy.. I concede it, but he MUST surrender TO ME, so I can protect him :P

otherwise... tsk tks :P

There are many ways in which a character is brough to life, from simple dice and notes to long stories, us roleplayers have a myriad ways of creating our special characters, those we are fond... maybe you devoted time in its creation, or instead youdeveloped him mostly as you leveled up. In the end its the same, either we get dead characters, or we get new friends we can be fond to play with. In my case one of my favorite characters is Jordan Fenix, her develpment took her time and I have played her in different campaigns. So do you have any stories about your own characters? why not tell us about them.

Other kind of development is the one we get by giving this characters a face, either we draw/paint them (not me, i couldn't draw if my life depended on it) or have friends or freelancers doing it :P

Here is Jordan's Fenix Artistic Development if any one is interested to take a look.

Besides the obvious of showing the art I have gotten for this my favorite character, it is also an invitation for those artist in development who are interested in helping us in Pathfinder Chronicler to develop this same thing for other stories.

We would be thankful if there are anyone who would be interested to help us illustrate scenes from A Havest to Remember or The Crowheart Legacy, or just characters from Pathfinders of Quadira or Scoundrels of Katapehs or any such stories.

Hereare some examples of art that has been born from the stories wrote in Pathfinder Chronicler

Artist are welcome to read this and show us how Paizo's and Paizo's fanbase have inspired you.

Yellow Dingo, any interest in joining efforts with us in Pathfinder Chronicler?

Character Development
Well this is a link of how my OC Jordan Fenix has evolved along this year, if you want please check it. Artist please check it, here it comes a future request from me and Zux from Character DevelopmentPathfinder Chronicler

Sandpoint does not have any heraldry; there's not really a knightly order based there, nor a single powerful noble. The town is only about 40 years old, after all.

wouldn't the families use the same heraldry used by theri famileis in Magnimar? all the nobles hail from there and actually have there the family seats, right?

Indeed foer what I heard both from Lilith and Hugo (who do an awesome work with Wayfinder) is backbreaking work with the only benefit of the feeling of realization (and posibly promotion), and I am happy to be part (in my small way) of the Wayfinder effort.

hey people stop wishing bad things to Catalyst and lets hope they can travel this stormy seas... while you might want Paizo to take a new license (that they might not for reason already stipulated at the beginning of this thread) we are talking about lots of peoples works and and efforts... so lets hope they can keep the company afloat.

actually I would prefer that Catalysts solves its issues... they have certainly do an awesome work...

besides Paizo has done somethign quite solid with Golarion and I doubgt Pathfinder RPG as a sistem woudl work at all with Shadowrun... while Dragonstar tried it already... and they did a good job, Shadowrun is another kind of animal... and I would love to see Catalyst continue with it.

Except that would require 3PP material... uh, nevermind then.

you may like to talk about the Irorum then :)

basically its a colliseum.. cerated as kind of training-test-temple kind for those who eprsued physical perfection as Irori (Buda/Kung Fu Kind of god) but in recent years it has become more and more commercial with gladiators entering for money and glory isntead of perfection... still there are practitioners of the old arts... but that is another story

NO ROAD BACK HOME

The story is a visit to Canterwall by someone who has passed a long time away from it, it has some reinterpretations on it, but I hope they are too small to hurt sensibilities.

It was born as a short story, but it has taken a life of its own, I expect to have the next part before the month ends, and continue with it with what comes of the year.

Anyways, I would love to hear your thoughts on it.

That was unfortunate as some parts - such as your take on magical item creation which was running through the latter part of the story - were interesting for me to read. I was slightly confused by what happened to the gold goblet until I figured out what was actually going on and that it was effectively materials & supplies (or rather offerings?) consumed by the process.

That particular point was interesting... for a moment I myself asked what was happening or why... or if maybe some other kind of offer would have been better, but all in all the process its quite inteersting and evocative.

so wonderful it is :D

F. Wesley Schneider wrote:

Not to criticize, but adventure-wise I'd go with the original before the remake. The original Ravenloft, or even its first revisitation House of Strahd, are both readily available on eBay and similar sites, typically for cheap, and remains an absolute blast to play through. The remake, far less appealing to me. Of course, I like the original version of the Wicker Man way more than the 2006 remake too, so to each his own I guess.

As for where to put Castle Ravenloft in Golarion, I asked myself that exact thing when writing about Ustalav. Turns out there's really two great options.

The county of Amaans is geographically probably most like Barovia, and it would be easy to drop the village of Barovia, Castle Ravenloft, and the surrounding lands into any of its misty valleys. The county also has at least one reference to a villainous vampire haunting its mountains in recent history, Viscount Galdyce, who may or may not have been defeated by Alison Kindler and companions in her adventuring days (and later novelized in her retirement; see Bestiary intro Pathfinder #8).

Varno is probably my personal first choice though, even though it has less potential for a direct port of the landscape. With a vampire's (Conte Tiriac) ages of secret rule, numerous ruins along the boarder with Razmiran and elsewhere in the county, and a population of superstitious peasants it'd be easy to place Castle Ravenloft amid these themes. I'm even slowly building my own homage to Ravenloft, Bastardhall, in this region. Tiriac's family home might also be a good fit.

excellent :D

and agreed, excellent taste :)

Wow, I find this surprising, I did not get that vibe from Ustalav at all.

tehre is no much info on Ustalav.. but somewhere around the forums there is post from Wes (who created ustalav) and painted Ustalav like that..

certainly not my favorite way to look at it..unless you think of ... Johny Deep's and Christina Ricci's Sleepy Hollow, that is srot of air he painted for us

my frist thought would be Ustalav, yes...
but there are 2 reasons why i would chose other place...

a) Wes mentioned the region is more like preindustrial england... meaning a lot more advanced in culture or technology than than Barovia

b) its too damn obvious... which is both a curse and a blessing...
the mood is already there... but its also what players would be expecting

PD: is a shame you have the Expedition one... its a loss... you should try checking the 2nd edition one

I myself might run it in ustalav... but i like to think of Ustalav more like 19th Transilvania, qhich is not too diferent from barovia... yet in Alba Lulia they already had an university...

for a Twist put it either in Taldor or the River kingdoms... anyplace with a nice range of mountains...

why?

[spoilers]Castle Ravenloft was constructed after Strahd conquered the land, he came from somewhere else... I might even make him of Azlani or Taldor descent, he conquered the place and after his family came...

the population is based on Slavs so it might either be varisians (which makes ustalav perfect) or ulfen...

Barovia is a land that had feed in countless blood... which will make the River kingdoms perfect,a kingdom forgotten by those who supported Sthrad decades, centuries, milenia ago.... and now Sthrad is master of his small ploy of land...[/spoilers]
