Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

"It is a requirement that the Court be informed in advance, by prosecution or defence, about the evidence that is to be presented. So if you find additional evidence or witnesses, your best route is to speak with prosecution or defence as appropriate. Sometimes I feel the adversarial approach is not the best way to discern the actual facts of the matter," said the Judge, sounding rather sad.

Andoran

The fountain has two stone cobras out of which water flowed. Each has a single bloodstone eye, each worth 100 gp.

Andoran

"You confirm my thoughts," said the Judge. "As you know, the trial pivots on three crimes attributed to the Beast over the course of the past year or so. The first is the killing of ten people in the village of Morast, which is about eight miles away from Lepidstadt. The village headman, Lazne, is due to give evidence tomorrow. I understand the prosecution is putting him up at The Broad Face, an inn down the road from the Courthouse that is popular with both lawyers and actors. Whether anyone else from the village has any light to shed on the matter I do not know, only Lazne appears on the docket for tomorrow."

Andoran

"Thank you," says the Judge. "I thought anyone held in such high regard by Petros might be willing to help..."

She sighs again, it's clear that news of his death has hit her hard.

"Evidence is by and large circumstantial, eye-witness accounts of the Beast's presence in the area of the three crimes that are being proffered by the prosecution rather than clear evidence of actual involvement... how much have you picked up so far?"

Andoran

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

The horses are indeed a little restless.

Round 1

Varrel is first to react as the water elemental rears up, pulling out a wand and uttering its command word.

Water elemental's save: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 2 = 20

Ashe channels power into his sword and it flares up with a eerie greyish-silver glow as he swings it in a flurry of mighty cuts. Both blows hit, although its unclear just how much the elemental is affected.

Graxer charges in and strikes a mighty blow of his own... and the water elemental dissipates, scattering into so many water droplets that splash back into the bowl of the fountain... which, you notice, has now stopped playing.

Combat over...

Andoran

"In that case," says Judge Daramid, becoming all business again, "I believe you are due this."

She digs in a chest and produces a bag which clinks.

"The one hundred platinum pieces the will states you should receive on delivery of all the books to Doctor Crowl and myself," she explains.

"Now that this sad duty is done, I am in need of some assistance. If Petros trusted you, I am inclined to do the same. I see you have already heard about the Beast. I believe that there is a cancer in Lepidstadt, a darkness lurking behind the shadow of a scapegoat. For many years the people of Lepidstadt have laid all their ills at the door of the creature known as the Beast of Lepidstadt — murders, thefts, and terror have all been attributed to the Beast. I'd imagine they'd claim he had soured milk if they thought it would be believed! However, the evidence suggests otherwise. Many of the stories are exaggerations or simply untrue. Moreover, some people have different stories to tell about the creature about its kindness and humanity, of how it has rescued loved ones or helped those in distress. Now that the time has arrived for such kindness to be repaid, however, no one dares to step forward and challenge the Beast's reputation.

She sighs.

"As a Judge, I have always tried to be fair. I have a keen sense of justice, and I fear the Beast will not receive a fair trial. The people of Lepidstadt have blamed the Beast for too much and for too long, and they want it to pay for its crimes, whether those crimes are real or imagined. In addition, I have some concerns about the crime for which the Beast was finally apprehended — the break-in and theft at Lepidstadt University of which you already know. I am convinced that the Beast's capture at the university was not all it appeared to be, for why would a creature that is intelligent knowingly enter the university, where it was certain to be trapped? However, to publicly announce my suspicions could put me at great risk, both professionally and politically. As one of the three justices presiding over the Beast's trial, I am of course unable to intervene openly, other than by insisting that the Beast be properly defended in court."

She leans forward.

"What I need is a group of people without local bias to uncover the real truth about the Beast and its alleged crimes. The Beast's legally appointed advocate, a barrister named Gustav Kaple, is hopelessly over his head and needs help — ideally someone to gather evidence about the Beast's alleged crimes and stand up in court to be questioned by the prosecution. Such speakers must have bravery in spades and silver tongues to match, to ensure that if there is more to the Beast's story, justice will be done. If the Beast is indeed guilty, then I can rest easier at night knowing that I gave it a fair trial.

"I'll be blunt. If you will take on this task, I will pay you a further 100 platinum each. But you must expressly keep me out of the equation, as any hint of collaboration in their investigations would put my legal objectivity into question. I will deny any involvement in the matter if pressed, but if they do get to the bottom of the matter, I will be very grateful indeed. What do you say?"

Andoran

A good campsite is soon found.

To Rhasadilara, the wolf howls sound like hunting calls, wide-flung scouts keeping in touch with each other. Bit odd in the open plains, not normal wolf hunting territory.

Andoran

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

All right then, we'll continue on that basis.

Andoran

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

The Judge nods, brushing away a tear.

"He will indeed be missed. Have you delivered the other books to the University, to Doctor Crowl?"

Andoran

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

Now as to introducing the new characters, I see 3 options: -

1. You have been here all along, we just didn't notice you.

2. You are in Kelmarane of your own accord, perhaps you wanted to see if any coin was to be made in the Battle Market - and just decide to team up with the party.

3. Lady Almah has continued recruiting adventurers, you were told to report to her camp - now at the monastery - and have been sent on to catch up with the party.

Amy preferences? I understand at least one of you has played to about this point in the AP before, so I don't need to explain too much to bring you up to speed.

Andoran

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

"Oh. Oh dear. No, I had not heard... how terrible," says the Judge, clearly upset by the news. "I am very sorry to hear that. Were you tasked with letting his friends and associates know, then?"

Andoran

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

Ashe approaches the fountain. As he does so, the gentle spray of the fountain turns to a spinning column of water that detaches itself from the basin and begins to move towards him! It appears to be a large water elemental...

As Ashe was suspicious and the water elemental had been watching proceedings in the garden so far, neither of you are surprised.

Initiatives, please.

Water elemental's initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11

Ashe, your initial actions and rolls - same for anyone else who wants to join in!

Andoran

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

Good thought. I've been trying to throw up people who can be busy 'kingdom building' under loose direction from your good selves, whilst you continue adventuring. Hope that is working OK for you.

What format of governance do you wish to establish anyway? Will rule be by a single person (king) or a governing council of some kind? In what (if any) way do ordinary people have their say?

You've mentioned a militia. Will this be to defend the realm or to maintain law and order within it? Or both... but they require somewhat different qualities from at least their commander if not the rank and file.

How will you pay for whatever you want to do? If you wish to levy taxes, you'll need to decide what to tax and arrange for it to be collected.

Just a few questions for you to chew over. (Naturally I'll have some more once you have answered these to your satisfaction.)

Andoran

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

It is but a single source of evil, although the fountain appears to contain only water.

Andoran

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

Alas the now unconscious and bound gnolls were not wealthy - a grand total of 35 sp between them, some dice, leather armour and battered but serviceable falcions and spears are your lot!

Andoran

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

"Do come in, then."

She leads you into a parlour, all wood panelling and artworks on the walls, several flower arrangements and comfortable chairs.

"Please be seated. Would you care for any refreshments? A glass of wine, perhaps?"

When everyone's settled with whatever they'd like, the Judge continues.

"Now, how may I help you?"

Andoran

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

The gnolls fall asleep, looking a bit startled as they do so.

Andoran

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

So noted. There's something evil about the fountain.

Andoran

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

You find the house easily enough. Judge Daramid lives in a fine townhouse surrounded by art in the centre of Lepidstadt. From what you can gather on the way there, she's well-respected for her even temper and fairness. As well as being one of the justices of Vieland and a magistrate of Lepidstadt, she is also said to be a member of the Esoteric Order of the Palatine Eye, a secret society of elite thinkers and scholars with a tradition of mysticism.

Judge Daramid invites you into her home when you arrive. She is in her sixties, with grey hair pulled back tightly into a bun and icy blue eyes.

Do you want to deal with Lorrimor's bequest at this time, or are you going to stick with the matter of the Beast?

Andoran

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

It's coming on dark as you come to the edge of the hex (or at least, where that would be if there were lines drawn on the rolling grasslands that you are riding over...), and somewhere in the distance you hear the howl of a wolf.

Disconcertingly, it's answered from much closer.

Andoran

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

It appears to be safe to move on...

Andoran

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

Between them, the 2 rakshasas have 1,275gp, three pale pink diamonds, and 2 wands of cure light wounds - rather elegant pieces of polished ash. One has a bracelet/ring combination, intricate and elegant, the matched ring and bracelet are attached by a web of fine platinum chains, set with jet stones at the links - non-magical but it looks like it's worth a fair bit.

To make compiling the loot list easier, when you have time to check, the pink diamonds are worth 2,200gp each and the bracelet/ring set is worth 2,600gp.

The elephant is in the form of a life-sized marble statue at the moment. Varrel's investigations suggest that it is a variant figurine of wonderous power that can be commanded to adopt 'statue' form or be the usual small figurine form. Assuming statue form counts as one of its activations for the month, but it can remain in statue form for an indefinite period of time.

Andoran

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

The Judge in this case is one Embreth Daramid, and directions may be had to her house.

You can see it on the map

Andoran

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

Round 3

Graxer's second blow strikes true, and slays the rakshasa!

Left bereft of command, the elephant flaps its ears, trumpets rather mournfully and returns to its post on the pedestal, reverting to its original form.

Combat over!

Well done, folks.

Andoran

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

Yes, he does (Grrr).

Waiting on Varrel...

Andoran

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

It is mid-afternoon.

Kaple and the guards do not know where the witnesses are staying. The Judge might know...

Andoran

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

Enjoy your 'adventure'... we'll keep your place warm on this adventure until you return.

Andoran

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

Round 2 amendment

Ashe's AoO connected. So did the first of 2 whallops delivered in his own turn. The rakshasa looks a bit annoyed, and a bit battered.

Andoran

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

You head south-east from the Fort towards F7. Your journey is peaceful, through rolling grassland that should make excellent grazing or pasture (perhaps that dairy farmer might like some land here).

Andoran

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

You may take both if you so wish. We're at 4th level now.

Andoran

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

Round 2

Now enlarged, Graxer steps in to smack the remaining rakshasa, catching him a solid blow! He's quick to retaliate, chanting something as he gestures at Graxer... provoking Ashe's strike, which hits. A gout of blood spurts from his shoulder.

A compelling urge to go cool off in the fountain assails Graxer. Please make a Will save to resist this urge.

The elephant stops, looking confused at the flying creatures buzzing around it. It trumpets again loudly, as if asking for directions from its master.

Then Varrel smacks it again! It looks even more confused and more than a little dazed.

Ashe's hands glow for an instant as he lays them on himself. He then gathers up and swings the nodachi again, but misses.

(OK, next round, please)

Andoran

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

S.W. just sent me a PM asking if we were looking to recruit again, so I asked him to come on over.

Andoran

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

Where would you like to go next?

Andoran

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

Round 1

Graxer is first to move, he drinks a potion and begins to enlarge...

Rakshasa #2 is next, he's casting a spell and so becomes visible, perched in the rear of the elephant's howdah. Muttering, he waves his hand as if throwing something at the giant armoured figure we all know and love as Ashe. An arrow of acid speeds forth towards him...

Ranged touch attack: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (10) + 10 = 20, damage 2d5 ⇒ (5, 4) = 9, plus another 2d4 ⇒ (2, 3) = 5 next round unless neutralised.

Rakshasa #1 is concentrating on directing the elephant, which begins to step down from the platform. Its attention is also on Ashe, and it attempts to gore him with its tusks!

Elephant's attack: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (13) + 16 = 29, damage 2d8 + 10 ⇒ (3, 7) + 10 = 20

Varrel is flying in dizzying spirals around the room, and attacks the elephant. And yes, you get your critical!

Ashe eventually has his shield arrayed to his satisfaction and delivers a massive blow with his nodachi to Rakshasa #1.. who screeches as his head parts company with his shoulders and flies, still screaming, across the garden!

(Ebon Wings, you acting this round or just watching?)

OK, Round 2 actions and rolls, please.

Andoran

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

Firstly, I'd better roll some initiatives!

Elephant: 1d20 ⇒ 11

Rakshasa #1: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (7) + 9 = 16

Rakshasa #2: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (13) + 9 = 22

Andoran

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

"Place I not know," says the Beast, looking confused. A tear wells up. "I do not know how I got there. It was dark then noise and light and they took me away and brought me here."

He is wearing hob-nailed boots.

Andoran

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

"Mens came with chains. I wasn't doing anything," says the Beast. "That is why they are here... and they keep hurting me."

Andoran

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

Those who can see invisible (including Nosoi):
The two figures in the howdah are rakshasas. One seems to be directing the elephant, the other is spellcasting.

Graxer - you have a massive initiative advantage, do you wish to do anything whilst Ashe gets his enlarged self sorted and Varrel flies around the place?

Andoran

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

You make your way towards the Trade Alliance Guildhall. This stately building once served as the office of Katapesh's Trade Alliance, a guild of merchants organized to corner trade on certain commodities and set prices on others. This guild is a national one, this was the 'local' office. It's all boarded up and shows no signs of life - or even of forced entry.

Do you want to break in?

In the distance, you spot a party of four gnolls wandering along. They look bored, but reasonably watchful, although they haven't spotted you lot yet.

Andoran

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

You may if you wish :)

Andoran

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

"Library? What library? They keep books there. I had a book once. Taldan poetry. I tried to learn some of it," says the Beast. "Why am I here? I didn't do it!"

Andoran

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

Dyfrig and Seth appear with some provisions for you all. Bread, cheese, cured meats, a few jars of preserves...

Apparently Seth has a talent for curing meat, and has started experimenting with sasuage-making.

Andoran

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

"I didn't do it!" says the Beast, firmly. A tear runs down its cheek.

Andoran

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

Ashe duly enlarges to giant economy scale.

And the elephant begins to move! It raises its trunk and trumpets loudly.

Andoran

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

The gnoll falls, choking in its own blood... whispers Mummy and dies.

Andoran

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

OK, we can finish scouring the area, then. No worries.

The gnolls have leather armour and battle axes. One has a glove with no thumb and a rather battered set of thieves' tools, the other has a pouch with various oddments useful to an archer and a blood-red agate. Between them they have a total of 20sp.

Andoran

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

The Beast rouses slowly, and cringes away from Dillon as if expecting a blow. It's clearly scared...

Andoran

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

@ Ebon Wings: I think not. Assuming elemental form is associated with your wild shape ability, and in that you are only capable of the communication that the creature whose form you assume can manage, hence no spell verbals. Elementals are not spell-casters, hence my conclusion.

Anyway, eveyone reaches the ground safely, and look round at a quite amazing site. Even Ashe, who has seen it on the odd social occasion that he's been here, still finds it quite exceptional!

This chamber hardly seems to be part of a palace — it seems more like a clearing at the heart of a vast jungle, teeming with life. The sky above is a deep, cloudless blue, while in the distance, hazy towers of distant structures rise above the verdant canopy. Exotic bird calls fill the air, the scent of dozens of unfamiliar flowers and plants assault the nose, and everywhere a riot of colour demands the eye, be it the wing of a tropical bird, the petals of a brightly hued flower, or the glittering multicolored tiles that make up a round fountain to the north, its central plume a stone pillar around which entwine two cobra statues that clutch green gems in their fanged maws. Opposite the fountain to the south stands an immense, life-sized jade statue of an elephant, a howdah perched on its back, its tusks and trunk raised high in greeting to the southeast doors — doors that, from inside the room, look more like gates set into a wrought iron fence that encircles the garden. Other gates set in this fence doubtless lead to other parts of the palace, and after a bit more observation the somewhat static nature of the jungle and landscape becomes apparent — the walls of this garden are in fact an incredibly realistic and clever painting of a Vudran junglescape.

Ashe, the 2 evils beings you discerned are perched in the howdah on the elephant's back. Looking up, though, they are invisible except to those who can see invisible creatures... but of course you know they are there!

Andoran

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

Do you all intend to jump/fly down from the balcony 25 feet to the area below?
