Liberty's Edge

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

Round 2

The Beatific One attacks with her spear, poking at Ashe.

Attack: 1d20 + 17 - 2 ⇒ (2) + 17 - 2 = 17, damage 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9

She then jabs with her kukri at Dex.

Attack: 1d20 + 17 - 2 ⇒ (9) + 17 - 2 = 24, damage 1d4 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6

Ashe responds with a couple of mighty swings from Dauntless Heart which clearly are doing damage.

Dex follows up with a flurry of blows from his fists. That's hurting too - she's got a fine black eye!

Jord then whispers to his sword before launching a flurry of blows, also doing considerable damage.

Edmund skirts around and chanting throws a handful of dust.

Beatific One's Will save: 1d20 + 14 - 2 ⇒ (18) + 14 - 2 = 30

Ebon Wings, there's only Neolandus Kalepopolis here and you can free him without difficulty.

Next round actions and rolls, please.

Liberty's Edge

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

Are you leaving the barrow, then?

Liberty's Edge

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

Please go ahead if you want someone - the group is a little small!

Liberty's Edge

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

One of the mongrel-men points to a barrel near the door. It's full of evil-looking rags.

Liberty's Edge

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

Jord - yes, she's shaken.

Edmund - if you skirt north round the large brazier, you can get a good angle on her for spellcasting (Map - sorry, at work so I cannot scribble on it for you!).

Liberty's Edge

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

With that roll, not a chance! Does that make you feel any better?

Liberty's Edge

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

Barnabas deals with one skeleton, and the rest slither around on Lothar's grease - even the lantern archon seems to be laughing. They don't attempt to follow you out of the barrow, however, so you are able to mount up and move away without hinderance. Sunset gives Rhasadilara a rather strange look as she perches on the mule. The mule doesn't seem bothered, though.

Liberty's Edge

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

Beatific One's Reflex save: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (7) + 14 = 21 - so she drops the sword but doesn't take damage from it glowing red hot all of a sudden.

So, on to Round 2. What are you all going to do?

Liberty's Edge

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

Is anyone else going?

Liberty's Edge

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

An excellent blow, Dex! It quite staggers the Beatific One... straight into Jord's sword which also does her damage.

Edmund occupies himself with spellcasting (his haste spell on the rest of you), whilst Ebon Wings circles around also chanting as he casts burning disarm... is this on her sword, her spear or her kukri?

Liberty's Edge

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

Barezata's first shot did go into Xulthos :)

Liberty's Edge

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

Well, let's be nice... this is intended to be a tough fight but if Barezata's first arrow hit Xulthos rather than Silena it might make things a little easier for you lot :)

Liberty's Edge

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

Only constructs and unliving things are immune, alas.

Of more pressing interest may be the skeletons which are emerging from the rooms to the north and south...

Rhasadilara manages to grab the exhausted Lothar and pull him back to where the rest of you are, however.

Liberty's Edge

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

Do you want to freeze the action until everyone's back?

Liberty's Edge

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

Sonya, you regain your senses.

And yes, everyone who pointed it out, the demon ought to have been at -4 to attack. Still got a couple of whallops in, alas.

Liberty's Edge

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

I certainly don't want to lose Silena... but this Xulthos is one tough cookie :(

Liberty's Edge

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

The black mist is still there, Rhasadilara - you'll need to make a DC19 Fortitude save if you want to rush in there.

Liberty's Edge

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

Lovely to see all the happy smiling faces of new graduates and their proud families. But my feet and most of the rest of me hurt from far too much rushing around! NINE ceremonies...

Liberty's Edge

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

Demon's Will save against Sonya's spell: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (7) + 8 = 15 GRRR!

The demon's hands and forearms shrivel and become blackened. He doesn't look best pleased.

Round 2

Barezata fires arrows wildly, managing to hit Silena with one.

Sonya doesn't seem to be doing anything right now... ?

The demon slashes at Silena with his claws...

Claw 1: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (4) + 13 = 17 - damage 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5
Claw 2: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (4) + 13 = 17 - damage 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4

... takes a snap at her...

Bite: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (17) + 15 = 32 = damgage 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (1, 4) + 6 = 11

... and slashes with his tail for good measure!

Tail: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (18) + 13 = 31 - danage 2d6 + 3 ⇒ (4, 1) + 3 = 8

Silena (if still upright, are you?) casts a quick spell and that awful droning noise is gone.

Hijiro hits himself over the head!

Liberty's Edge

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

It's difficult to flank someone who's got heads facing in all directions :)

OK, then...

Ashe bolts across the room so quickly he almost blurs, and gets between the Beatific One and her victim... who is Neolandus Kalepopolis! Noting he looks more scared than hurt, he strikes at the Beatific One with Dauntless Heart, catching her a solid blow on one arm. (By the way Ashe, fire is one of the few things she isn't resistant to, so do keep listing the damage, please!)

Dex is next, I'll give him until tomorrow then move on with the rest of the round regardless regardless :)

Liberty's Edge

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

DM contemplates where everybody is, and decides that Silena gets an arrow in the backside! (Sorry)

Undeterred (I know you too well!), Silena presses her attack regardless, rushing forwards swinging her great axe and hacking at the demon - slicing one of those wings clean off!

And it's time for the next round's actions and rolls, please.

Liberty's Edge

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

Round 1

Leaving her sobbing victim, the Beatific One waves one hand and a twisting pattern of subtle, shifting colors weaves through the air.

Please make a DC 16 Will save, everybody.

You act in the order Ashe, Dex Camulus, Jord Sturmsson, Edmund Gwenn, then Ebon Wings last... but apart from a bit of movement you haven't told me what you want to do! So actions and die rolls please - remember you don't have to post in order, I'll sort that out in a summary post.

PS Good use of Majenko to pass information, good thinking Master Gwenn!

Liberty's Edge

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

I'd better roll her initiative now I'm back!

Beatific One's Initiative: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (19) + 7 = 26

Liberty's Edge

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

As Lothar enters the 10-foot-square area in the centre of the room, he triggers the trap — the four faces on the walls seem to inhale deeply, then breathe out black tendrils of mist that sap his very strength.

In game mechanical terms, the effect is that of a ray of exhaustion - so Lothar needs to make a Fortitude save, DC19. If he succeeds, he is merely fatigued, otherwise he is exhausted for the next 3 minutes.

There's also a grating, grinding sound from the 2 chambers to the north and south...

Liberty's Edge

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

Now that graduation week is over, I'm back :)

Liberty's Edge

Liberty's Edge

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

Nice interactions - keep it up!

Liberty's Edge

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

I shall :)

Meanwhile, those inside the Chymic Works can come out for a breath of fresh air and meet the newcomers. Then we can get going next week.

Liberty's Edge

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

Silena is OK (and, it appears, rather cross!), although even with the first save, the noise of the droning wings has some effect - you are at -1 on all attack rolls, skill checks, and saving throws while in the area of effect.

Unfortunately, Sonya and Hijiro (sorry!) are in a spot of trouble. The annoying drone of the demon's wings has confused you.

Sonya, you are also fascinated by the twisting pattern of colours.

To save you looking stuff up, here (courtesy of the Pathfinder Reference Document, are definitions of these states: -

Confused: A confused creature is mentally befuddled and cannot act normally. A confused creature cannot tell the difference between ally and foe, treating all creatures as enemies. Allies wishing to cast a beneficial spell that requires a touch on a confused creature must succeed on a melee touch attack. If a confused creature is attacked, it attacks the creature that last attacked it until that creature is dead or out of sight.

Roll on the following table at the beginning of each confused subject's turn each round to see what the subject does in that round.

d% Behavior
01–25 Act normally.
26–50 Do nothing but babble incoherently.
51–75 Deal 1d8 points of damage + Str modifier to self with item in hand.
76–100 Attack nearest creature (for this purpose, a familiar counts as part of the subject's self).

A confused creature who can't carry out the indicated action does nothing but babble incoherently. Attackers are not at any special advantage when attacking a confused creature. Any confused creature who is attacked automatically attacks its attackers on its next turn, as long as it is still confused when its turn comes. Note that a confused creature will not make attacks of opportunity against anything that it is not already devoted to attacking (either because of its most recent action or because it has just been attacked).

Fascinated: A fascinated creature is entranced by a supernatural or spell effect. The creature stands or sits quietly, taking no actions other than to pay attention to the fascinating effect, for as long as the effect lasts. It takes a –4 penalty on skill checks made as reactions, such as Perception checks. Any potential threat, such as a hostile creature approaching, allows the fascinated creature a new saving throw against the fascinating effect. Any obvious threat, such as someone drawing a weapon, casting a spell, or aiming a ranged weapon at the fascinated creature, automatically breaks the effect. A fascinated creature's ally may shake it free of the spell as a standard action.

Hijiro, I need a second Will save from you, and we are still waiting on Barezata. Note that I am busy the coming week helping at graduation ceremonies so may not be able to look in on the game as often as I'd (you) would like.

Liberty's Edge

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

Edmund Gwenn:
She is a Beatific One, an LE outsider (asura). She has spell-like abilities, and is rarely surprised. Beatific ones hold their opponents in complete disdain and offer no quarter or honourable advantage. They enjoy tripping or disarming opponents, battering them with unarmed strikes, and using their foes' weapons against them. They tend to fight to the death. They are a minor part of the pantheon of Vudrani deities, master martial artists and skilled with virtually all weapons and in unarmed combat.

Ebon Wings:
She is alive and in good shape.

Ashe:
She's definitely evil! Other than her it's just the general miasma of a place in which evil is done... but you don't know what she is.

Jord:
She's a minor messenger/agent in the Vudrani pantheon of deities, you think she has the unlikely name of a Beatific One and usually lives in Hell. Oh, and she's evil - LE to be precise.

Liberty's Edge

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

Ashe in the lead, you burst through the doors, entering a large room lit by a heartily burning firepit in the room's center. Cages hang on chains dangling from hooks in the ceiling, while racks, strappadoes, gibbets, and other implements of torture fill the floor space. A pair of immense wooden doors stand in the wall to the north, while to the south stand several narrow cells.

A tall, feminine figure with golden tanned skin and well-formed curves, suggesting years of activity and work toward physical perfection, leans over a sobbing figure that she is strapping to a stretching rack. Beneath her diaphanous robes, the creature's legs cross over one another, while six arms — two facing toward her back — wave in a continuous dance. Three fanged heads sit atop a sturdy neck, studying every direction.

She looks like this!

And just because you asked so nicely... a map

Liberty's Edge

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

Round 1

Barezata pauses as she studies their adversary. She realises that, impressive as he might appear, his spells and skills are not honed for combat - he uses more subtle ways to accomplish his objectives.

Sonya - what are you doing?

The demon stands up, his wings beginning to flutter and generating an annoying droning sound - everyone please make a DC 18 Will save.

He raises an arm and calls something incomprehensible and mind-twisting as a twisting pattern of subtle, shifting colours weaves through the air, drawing your eyes towards it and fascinating you. Might I trouble you all for another Will save, please? (DC 15 this time.)

Silena is running forwards towards the demon. Hijiro winds up to hurl a sling bullet in his direction... but we'll wait for your Will saves before concluding these actions...

Liberty's Edge

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

As Silena voices her defiance, you all see the illusion flicker and fade. No rough-hewn cavern lies before you, this is a large worked chamber perhaps forty feet square. Two rows of three marble columns flank the main walkway leading from east to west. A series of low, curved stairs at the opposite side of the room leads to a large concave recess in the western wall, with an elaborate throne perched at the top of the stairs.

The throne is occupied by an immense insect-like fiend, with huge claws, a multi-eyed face with slavering mandibles, and a long serpentine tail tipped with chitinous blades. His wings are nearly transparent, and he moves with an almost hypnotic grace, his wings droning and light reflecting off his carapace in a dazzling display.

It seems that you are all spoiling for a fight... well, so is the demon!

His initiative: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14

Liberty's Edge

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

OK, thus well-buffed you advance through the illusory wall, finding that - just as Vencarlo said - the passageway continues for ten yards before a flight of steps leads down to a set of double doors. They are wooden, and closed. Evil lies beyond, there is no doubt of it.

Liberty's Edge

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

My graduation is a long way off (I am about to start a PhD here, one of the perks of working at a university!). I'll be enjoying watching others graduate this time around.

Liberty's Edge

Note that next week (20-24 July) is graduation week at university - as I've been roped in to help run the ceremonies time to sit down at a computer may be limited!

Liberty's Edge

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

You return safely to E3, and operate the lever... everything spins and you find that you are facing the entrance you came in by. Vencarlo leads the way out and points to the illusory wall.

"It's through there. A passage, a few steps down, then a set of double doors."

Liberty's Edge

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

Barnabus, the skeleton has a small item registering as magical, perhaps a ring or brooch. There is also a magical trap centred on it, which seems to be connected with the four faces on the walls. As for the corpse, it's holding what appears to be a magic sword... only it's broken. You are not sure, but from here you think it's a bastard sword.

Liberty's Edge

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

The door is neither locked nor trapped. Is it just Barezata who has gone invisible?

When you open it, the chamber stands in stark contrast to the craftsmanship of worked stone of the rest of the crypt—instead, here looms a vast cavern. The air is damp and cold, and moist, writhing roots hang down from the ceiling twenty feet above. Puddles of reeking fluid dot the floor, and at the far end a jagged upthrust lance of stone rises from the ground to form a steeply-sloped platform.

Standing upon the upthrust stone shelf is a towering muscular man wielding an immense axe — to all appearances, Kardswann. As you enter the room, 'Kardswann' chuckles with a dry, inhuman laughter and speaks with a croaking rasp.

"Many years have I languished in this foul place, trapped here by the wards placed by your Pactmasters. Endless decades have I endured the whispering spirits of the wholesome dead, cursing my captors, hating the world I could no longer corrupt. When the Templar came eight weeks past he walked through the walls. The red-men's seal remained intact. But you, you have broken the seal, and my long captivity is finally at an end. But before I go, I will kill you one by one until the last of you willingly allows himself to be my slave. Which one of you, I wonder, shall that be?"

Liberty's Edge

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

You are correct... the sword with the magic aura is held by the corpse in the easternmost room, the skeleton is in the centre where it, er, says 'skeleton' :)

Liberty's Edge

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

Sorry been a bit busy... I ought to have time to make the next post tomorrow (and time to fiddle with the 'orrible map in the AP).

Liberty's Edge

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

Your attempts to destroy the skeletons completely seem to have done the trick... and with a bit of reassurance (and the cloak of resistance - you don't need to use the potion!) Hijiro regains his normal poise.

Liberty's Edge

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

Round 2

Silena, quite unimpressed with corpses that have the temerity to get up again when they have been put down, takes a swipe with her great axe, splitting the horrid thing clean in twain!

(That's critter #2 by the way.)

Critter #1, meanwhile, takes a swipe at Silena, reaching out in an attempt to embrace her.

Its attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (15) + 4 = 19

Barezata fires an arrow at Critter #3, skewering it. It falls over again.

Sonya draws on her deity's power once more and looses it at Critter #1, the only one which is still upright.

Critter #1's save: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7 - failed! It falls over as well.

Hijiro whimpers in a corner, terrified.

All seems quiet again... or is it?

Liberty's Edge

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

Here's a map for you.

Where do you want to go? What do you want to do?

Liberty's Edge

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

There is magic on or around that skeleton in the middle. Also, the sword held by the withered corpse.

Liberty's Edge

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

Barezata:
You realise that they are feigning death. You do not suffer the fear effect I'm about to slam everyone else with!

As you discuss the situation, the three creatures rise again from the ground and resume their advance on you!

Please make a DC 13 Will save against the horror of this sight. If you fail you are panicked for 2d4 rounds.

Liberty's Edge

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

Vencarlo looks puzzled.

"The illusionary wall, yes, but once through that there's just a passageway to the torture chamber and some cells."

Everyone happy to go back to E3? (Map) Are you agreed that operating the lever twice is what you want to do?
