Martika and her twin brother Khalit were raised from a very young age by an older girl named Haleen, along with a Mwangi girl named Mirama.

At least, it was always assumed that she and Khalit were twins. They are the same age, and are near mirror-images of each other, yet Martika's blood burns always hot, while Khalit's moods flash like lightning. Haleen said that they had the blood of the djinn, but different djinn. Martika is believes instead that she has been blessed by Sarenrae, but has trouble reconciling Khalit's nature with this belief. Despite his following her in her worship of Sarenrae, she believes her may be more attuned to Nethys. Although she has never said so directly to him, she tries to guide Khalit to emulate Nethys' light half rather than his dark side.

Haleen taught Martika that nothing should hold her back from following what she believed in, and although neither Haleen, Mirama nor Khalit share her level of devotion, she has pledged herself completely to Sarenrae.

Martika is very concerned about Haleen's disappearance, and will do whatever she must to repay the debt that she owes the woman who raised her.

Martika has rich bronze skin and burning red hair (obviously maintained through the use of henna). She smiles constantly, although sometimes it is the smile of the wolf baring its teeth. Martika is passionate about everything she does, and it shows clearly in her expression. When not in armour, Martika prefers clothing that is bright and colourful, but suitably modest as she believes a young woman should be.
