Martaug pulls the wagon to a stop and drops the break to keep the horses from bolting. He slips his shield on, lays his sickle on the buckboard beside him and finally takes up Stinger, ready to let fly.
Martaug smiles at Orislav's recitation. "I don't know, kinda preachy, but it sure feels right ta me. Maybe dere's more ta dat religion stuff dan I figgered." He adjusts his shortspear, cradling it in his non-driving hand. "I'm lookin' at us more as what happens in a bee hive. Folks think ants an bees are da same because dey both have queens, but dey ain't. Ants is born inta a role for life. You born a drone, you stay a drone, you born a soldier, you stay a soldier. Most bees are able to switch da roll up as needed in dere hive. You can be a soldier one day, guardin' the hive an' den a forager comes in lets da hive know about a good pollen source. Suddenly, you gots a few soldiers tradin' out to be foragers ta increase da intake. We's like dat only we're kinda foragers normally an' now we's bein' called ta be soldiers."
He shrugs his big shoulders "Dere's other comparisons ta nature, but I know bees pretty good."
Since he was alerted to a potential sneak looking after us, Martaug definitely has his hackles up. In any event, he has his shortspear Stinger close to hand. Does it look like the ravens are rising up from the ground or are they already airborne and swooping in for a meal?
When Hugh doesn't seem to be forthcoming with conversation, Martaug shrugs and goes back and makes sure everything is set on the wagon (making sure to walk wide around the contenious horse). When Valdisara says time is wasting, he nods, takes the reigns, and clicks the team into action. They head toward the barn with the blue doors.

Orislav, DM Chris
Spoiler:
Martaug glances toward he smithy, hoping the darkness piercing eyes of his lineage can pick something out. "Dunno, but we'll keep an eye on our backside as we travel. A bandit group could have some folks in town ta find out what kinda defenses are up. We keep vigilant an' not be talkin' 'bout it."
Martaug takes the opportunity to talk to the freindly shopkeeper. "Where ya from 'Hugh'? Quite a while back I wuz part of a clan dat stomped 'round north'a da Kestral River, but ya sound like yer from a damn sight fartder north'n that. I unnerstan' if ya just say yer from around, 'mind."
Martaug watches the scoundrels head off without saying a word...many drift through his mind, but none escape his lips. When they have headed on their way, he gives a sneer and says "Scum from Razmiran by da accent. Dey probably up here tryin' ta make a name for 'emselves by bullyin' da locals... Somethin' dey can take back ta dere god king fer his affections."
He heaves a sigh and turns his attention back to the task at hand "How much gold we shy?" When the old man of similarly dubious descent offers his goods, Martaug smiles at him "Thank'ee, friend. Know it's goin' ta help the public good and we'll return it to ya if'n we're able."
Martaug stays seated on the bench of the wagon, getting his shield ready to slip on and 'Stinger' ready to pull out. For now he says nothing, just looking irritated to be stopped.
Martaug nods at Valdisara "Yeah, Bromley's barn is 'bout ten minutes out by dat track. Hard ta miss, da doors is painted blue. We can get tagether dere."
Martaug will stay with and help Tepetta change out the harnesses. He'll use handle animal or even wild empathy if need be. When dealing with the grumpy old stallion, he'll keep well away from the mouth (letting Tepetta change him out if possible) and try to radiate a vibe of 'you do your job, I'll do mine.'
Martaug flashes a small smile when Yalka give his name the more traditional orc pronunciation. When she mentions the disadvantage of the dark, he looks at her quizically for a moment then nods with a small chuckle. "Dat's right... humans, heh."
The big half-orc looks at the woman with the cart levelly "Dere's 36 gold, or da equivalent, Tepetta. Dis is ta go protect da Relson's from a bandit raid. Win was hurt pretty bad tryin' ta get a muster of citizens ta act in their defense."
Martaug pulls the onyx ring from his left hand and hands it to Orisalv. "Dat ring should be a marker good fer about a day anna half, Tepetta. Dat good by you? I try to give you gold or equal worth'a the fally honey when it comes in to get my ring back outta hock?"
It's worth 15gp, and I'm assuming that I have a passing 'nodding neighbor's' amount of knowledge about most townfolk (and them of me) since I've been here for two years.
"I think yer all confusin' two issues," the half-orc druid rumbles as he lisens to the greetings and nacent plans "Deputy Win said dat da Blackspears wuz nearby and he's pretty sure dey were planning ta a attack da farm at dusk. Dose bites'a his weren't dat old, so dere's no way in da Hells dat he ran all da way from a farmstead dat far out. More like he found da bandit's hidey hole. Whether da spiders were bein' used by da dem as guard critters or incidental is up fer debate, but dey was probably in da same structure. Is dere any mines or caves nearby dat anyone knows about? Particularly, in da direction of da Rolsen farm?"
"Yeah, it's 18 miles on ta da house, so if we get some steeds, it could make a big difference. Havin' a couple horses around might be good for helpin' detect the spiders, too."
Martaug nods at the small group and grunts "I gotta get my stuff from da barn. I'll be back here in 5 minutes. I like the Rolsens and don' want anything to happen to 'em, but I'm not goin' in empty-handed."
He runs back to the barn of his 'sponser family' and quickly gets dressed in his leather armor. He soon trots back to the group wearing a leather armor dyed yellow with rusty red-brown blotches. He holds a shortspear in one hand and a heavy wooden shield showing an emblem of a bee's head encircled by a centipede (somewhat ameturish in technique).
Martaug moves behind the bar to draw up some fresh water and grabs a few more clean looking rags or towels if they are apparent. He trundles his load back to Jolem.
"I know exactly where they live. I'll take ya in just a few minutes. Let's see if'n we can't get Win in a little better shape. May be able to give us some more word 'bout these bandits."
(Gavgoyle, the information under Martaug's spoiler tag is the result of the Perception and Knowledge (Nature) rolls. Out of combat, if there's an obvious attribute or skill roll your PC needs to attempt, I'll go ahead and do that for you, to keep the game moving. If you want to try something out-of-the-ordinary, or when we're in combat, I'd want you to roll the virtual dice.)
Cewl beans! Do you have any issues with me using Random.org during the workday? The only problem is that there is no link back with IC. I will use IC when #1 I'm home and #2 it's not down. Otherwise, I'll give you my modifier info and let you do the roll. Since this is playtest fudging would be counterproductive and the druid class is my favorite, so would consider it cardinal sinning. I'm okay with whatever you decide.
Martaug hands the rag to Jolem, looking a little relieved that someone else is doing nursing duty.
Martaug runs back to the bar grabbing the vial and jug of honey, as well as one of Jolem's cleaner looking towels.
"It ain't stings, cub! I know bee stings! Dese are bites... What was it Win? Spiders? Ants? Knowledge (nature) check: 13 + 1(rank) +0(INT)+1(trait)+3(trained)=18 I ain't got no healin' magics ta cast an' I don't know that much about fixin' wounds, but I'll do what I can. Honey's got some healin' qualities an' it may pull some'a da poison out. Anyone else wi'more learnin' should jump right in here."
He opens the small vial and pours some of the royal jelly mixture on the rag and starts rubbing it into the welts. If no one else is up for it, Martaug will make an untrained skill check. It's a real home remedy so, what the hey... I don't have book access at work, so add any modifiers to this that are necessary. BTW I have to use Random.org's number generator for my roles, as IC is blocked.
Healing check: 9 +3(WIS)=12
As he administers the salve he looks back at Jolem. "Da Rolsen's is good people. I hate for anythin' bad ta happen to 'em. Their boy Gunlar is a pip. I'll be joinin' in any muster headin' out to their place. I just gotta get my stuff from the barn."
Hey der, I'm Martaug. I came from da Hold of Belkzen when I was a little one, but my clan got killed off. I ran all the way down into the Fangwood and met my teacher in da magic of da living world dere. After he taught me as his apprentice, he sent me out here to watch out for a disturbance in the Balance dat da Circle was feelin'.
I live in one of da outlying farms, helpin' with neighbors animals an' such, an' I've been settin' up skeps for my bees and da honey trade. I've been in town about two years now, so some of ya may know me.
Oh, an' if ya know me, ya know dat I've got a huge facination with bugs of all types. I obviously love bees, but I also like centipedes, spiders, ants, and beetles. I can watch 'em all day.
I only know Win in passing. I helped stop a cougar that was preying on some local goats (and almost a local child) at the edge of town. I convinced it (wild empathy) to go find more suitable hunting grounds, lest it be turned into prey itself. Past that, just a nodding relationship.
Martaug slid the big clay pot across the bar to Jolem and with a beaming smile, reached back into his belt pouch an pulled out a small vial and passed it across as well. The viscous honey inside is a clear, beautiful amber.
"It's a good batch, but not as much as last month. Be less next month, too. We swing inta da fall, an da bees start producin' more. We getta good batch in few months... I gots lots's foragers bein' brooded ready to find da good fall nectar inna month. After dat, we get lotsa nice dark fall honey. An' dis little vial gots da royal jelly mixxed with da honey. Better use it soon, though, it won't keep well."
The young druid turns quickly when he hears Win come in and joins some of the other patrons clustered around the man.
I hope to have my sheet done by tomorrow morning. Our A/C was out from Sunday to Friday, then again from Saturday night to yesterday noon. My parents chose the wrong time to fly down to Texas for a visit... Anyway, with all the running around, I haven't been able to polish Martaug up fully, but I expect to finish tonight.
Would it be okay with you if I take the 'Vermin Heart' feat from the Revenge of the Kobold King module? It basically allows Vermin type to be treated as Animal for all spell and ability effects that target Animals.
