Background:

None know how many Varisian clans wander the lands of Golarion. Some choose to wander entire continents, while others restrict themselves to smaller areas such as the Varisian lowlands between Riddleport and Korvosa.

Marduzi was born to the Lovarya clan in a wagon just outside of Riddleport eighteen years ago. One of several close-knit clans working the Riddleport to Korvosa route across the Varisian lowlands, the Lovarya clan is famed for their trick riding performances. Towns throughout the region buzz with excitement when the scarlet and yellow Lovarya wagons appear on the outskirts of town, escorted by colorful male and female riders on their lively dapple-gray mounts.

A natural horseman, Marduzi joined the shows at a young age, first as a child rider on ponies helping to drum up interest in the Lovarya shows, offering a smile and an easy laugh to potential spectators. But, it wasn’t long before Marduzi was mastering more and more difficult tricks, becoming a young star of the Lovarya performances.

Now, the Varisian clans of the lowlands are close and the Lovaryas and Mvashtis are closer than most. The two clans both work the same routes and frequently met in the cities and towns between Riddleport and Korvosa, with a special magnetism for the small town of Sandpoint. An extended family of sorts, children and adults both would mingle together whenever their caravans crossed. So, it isn’t surprising that young Marduzi Lovarya not only knew Niska Mvashti, but adopted the ancient woman as his favorite grandmother – after all, she spoiled the young Varisian even more than his own. And she also taught him of the heavens, of Desna’s role in helping shape them, and of the great value that they offer all travelers.

And perhaps Nishka saw something in young Marduzi that others did not. Certainly the youth was a great rider and one that came into a particularly wiry strength as he grew into his teens, allowing him to perform dangerous tricks of strength and agility that other riders found impossible. So too, the young rider seemed to have a special bond with some of the most difficult horses, even coaxing the notoriously brilliant, but difficult Smoke to be his favorite steed. But perhaps it isn’t surprising that Niska saw something more – after all, they say she was one of the few Varisians to retain the Sight after the death of Aroden.

And so it was a few months ago, when the Lovarya caravan made their way into Sandpoint that Marduzi learned his favorite grandmother was on her deathbed at last. Marduzi made his way to Niska’s house and begged Koya to let him see her one last time. To which Koya told Marduzi that her mother was expecting him. The young man made his way into a home lit with candles and still colorful, even as death crept near. Koya bade Marduzi to come close and proceeded to tell her favorite that her time on Golarion was coming to an end and that she would soon be visiting Desna’s heavens forever. She reminisced about better times and then made the misty-eyed young man make her a promise. She told him that she saw that he was destined to make journeys greater than the Riddleport to Korvosa road and that if her daughter, Koya, ever made a long journey, that he would accompany her and keep her safe.

And so it was that Marduzi decided to stay in Sandpoint, at least for a short time, once the Lovarya caravan left a couple weeks later. Marduzi was able to say farewell to Niska when she passed and was a great aid to Koya in the difficult days that followed. It wasn’t long after that Sheriff Hemlock tracked down the young man and asked him to put his skills to use as an outrider for the town. Marduzi told the Sheriff that he wasn’t sure how long he’d be in town, but he was certainly happy to help as long as he was around.

Appearance:

Marduzi has dark, dusky skin and eyes of the deep violet of Desna’s heavens. The young man is unassuming, but lean and hard and his wiry strength is frequently underestimated. He dresses in the loose, colorful clothes of Varisians and a holy symbol of Desna hangs from his neck at all times. On patrol, he puts a chain shirt under his garments with a lance in hand and greatsword strapped to his back.

Personality:

Marduzi sometimes struggles meeting new people. He has always had his role to play with the Lovarya caravan and had little need to push himself to meet others. He bonds closely with those that he has time to understand, but has been feeling a bit like a fish out of water in Sandpoint and it has been fortunate that folks like Koya, Sheriff Hemlock, Sandru, and Ameiko have been there to help ease his transition. At this point, he is close to riding on down the coast to rejoin the caravan, but has promised himself to stick it out a few more weeks.

Crunch Objectives:

Will be planned to be effective on and off mount since I’m not sure how much of each is present in Jade Regent. Definitely intended to be a melee front-liner and to make allies more effective as well. Will look to do some refinement of plans depending on other characters in the party. For example, Order of the Star may make sense if we have a lot of Desna worshippers. Also, will seek to work together for teamwork feats and may consider the Beast Rider archetype depending on other characters.
