Marcus Cole works as a security guard. He has struggled since the 'incident' to put that behind him and move on. The nightmares, waking up in a cold sweat screaming, the image of his sister fading from his mind as the waking world forces the scene from his vision. ”Why do I keep having these nightmares?!”
Marcus has known no other life until he was 18. That was when he and the others broke out and destroyed the place. Nothing was left. That was 10 years ago. He found that he liked a quiet life. So, in his most recent work, he took a job as a security guard for a hospital on the night shift. He went to work each night, looking forward to the peace and quiet away from the rest of the world.
He was plagued by nightmares about his sister, Rose. He misses her so much! They grew up together in the facility. When he was 15 they came and took her away. He wouldn't use his flight unless he was with Rose. He would take her around the garden dome and sit in the tops of the trees and look at the simulated sky. How he longed to see the sky!
He kept demanding to see her and they kept promising they would. Finally, they relented. He wouldn't participate in their tests unless he saw her. When they brought Rose to her he saw that she was disabled.
”Wha.....what happened to her?!
”She went crazy. Did it to herself. She wouldn't calm down and threw herself off a balcony and now she is like that in a wheelchair. See what you did? This is what happens when you don't listen to us! You will get to see her again when you start flying.”
Reluctantly, he performed tests like they wanted. Though on some days he was so angry he wanted to break down the walls and take Rose away. He developed the ability to hear radio communication and talk as if he was using a radio even if he had none to use. The techs were happy about that. He continued to develop his flight in a wind tunnel they had set up on the complex grounds. At first he couldn't move but as he exerted himself he found that he could get further and further towards the front of the tunnel. Eventually, he was able to fly and withstand any winds they generated.
In trying out his defensive reflexes they found that he wasn't very quick. He got hit a lot. The lead tech came in during one of these exercises to give him a challenge that would find out what he was capable of. He had Marcus called over. Pulling out a 9mm he had hidden, he aimed and shot Marcus. Marcus reacted instinctively. Just as the trigger was pulled he shut his eyes, gritted his teeth and waited. He heard the gun fire but felt nothing. Did he miss?
Opening his eyes he found the bullets on the ground at his feet. Looking up, the techs had a pleased look on their faces.
”Well done. You will live to see another day.”
He was put back in his room. His thoughts returned to Rose. He missed her so much. He kept asking for her until it became him demanding to see her again.
”You can't keep me in here forever!” he yelled.
Flying against the wall in metal form, he tried to break through. He began pounding on the wall as hard as he could. He finally stopped. Crying, he didn't want to go on. Hearing an explosion, he stopped. Listening, he heard another. And another!
Looking around to see if anyone had seen him, he noticed that the lab techs were panicking and running about. He discovered that the spot on the wall he had been pounding on was dented. If I dented that I wonder if.... He decided to try again. This time he ripped through it like it wasn't even there. Now he would find Rose and get out of there. He focused on the radio chatter from across the facility. He listened until he found where they were keeping Rose and then went to get her.
She was being wheeled to a helicopter by some agents that were taking her away. Not if he could help it.
He easily stopped them as their guns couldn’t penetrate his skin. He turned around to get Rose.
He hadn't even picked her up when agent who was still conscious grabbed his gun and fired several times. Looking at Rose he found her slumped over in her wheelchair. The agent spoke.
”You should have listened to us. She wouldn't be dead now if you hadn't been so stupid. You always were the dumb one.”
Marcus couldn't take any more. With a scream, he grabbed the agent by the neck and snapped it like a twig and his body collapsed on the ground.
He rushed to Rose and held her. Why? Why do I have to lose you?
In agony, he grabbed the helicopter and tossed it at the nearest building. He began tearing through the facility until he found the tech who had given him so much grief.
”How does it feel knowing you are about to die?” Marcus asked bitterly.
”Please! I was just doing my job! I don't want to die!”
”You should have thought about that before Rose was murdered.”
He then grabbed the tech by the neck and felt his bones give way beneath his grip and tossed him aside. Looking around, he saw the facility was mostly in ruins. Techs were running everywhere in a panic as the others who had been held were escaping. Standing on the helipad where Rose was, he spoke to her for the last time.
”Bye. I'll miss you!” he said with tears streaming down his face.
And then, with a thunderous boom, he shot into the air and was gone. He never wanted to see that place again or think about it.
He is 28 now and his life has been turned upside down again. Why won't they leave him alone? Why did they feel that need to come after him? He just wants to live a quiet life.
If that is how they want it, so be it.
They will pay for the death of his sister. They most definitely will pay.
