Gith Advice? Looking to play a Warrior / Mage
Marc Radle 81,

Shag Solomon Finish avatar

Just wanted to second my dislike of 'gish' as a term. In a perfect world, I'd also like to see a moratorium on 'nerf' and 'gimp'

Heck, I'd also love to see people actually <gasp> spell out words when they type instead of doing the LOL thing - it took me a couple minutes to part the mist and figure out that EK was Eldritch Knight for example.

Oh well, I can dream

Everyone can cast spells.

I wouldn't be doing my job if I didn't bring up the fact that there is a Spell-less Ranger variant Pathfinder class in the current issue of Kobold Quarterly.

Good luck with what sounds like an interesting campaign!

Pathfinder Roleplaying Game GM Screen (OGL) Print Edition
Marc Radle 81,

I'm really excited to get this!

Quick question on shipping though ...

I went to order the screen but the cheapest shipping method is almost $10? That seems pretty high considering the screen itself has to weigh next to nothing and is only $15.00.

I'm not complaining - Paizo makes AMAZING stuff and I plan to get this screen. It just looks like I might need to reconsider how I get it ...

Thanks!

FYI, though ... my son still played with these sets and thing like it when he was 10. It was probably more like 12 or so that we started to move away from toys ...

In fact, all the money we make on these auctions goes into the fund to buy my son a Fender Stratocaster guitar for Christmas ... so, they still get toys - the toys just get cooler and WAY more expensive!!! :)

Anyway, thanks for looking!

A number of these sets sold (thanks!) but a few did not, so ... like Crazy Eddie, I'm slashing the prices and re-listing those sets again!

Please take a look if you are interested. At the risk of sounding like a bad, late night infomercial sales person, these really would make great Christmas gifts, especially if you know a younger child who is into dragons, knights, castles etc!

This has come up a few times in the past - I believe James said they meant to list the bonus types in the book but didn't (either it was cut due to space or it was an oversight)

Your best bet is to check the D20.org site - it DOES list the types of bonuses.

Hope that helps!

Ranger/Druid Animal Companion Question
Marc Radle 81,

Shag Solomon Finish avatar

The current issue of Kobold Quarterly has a Spell-less Ranger Pathfinder variant that actually has a few animal companion things that might help you. One of the Ranger Talents, for example, is Additional Animal Companion. Also, this variant allows the Ranger to use his full class level as his Druid level, not his level -3.

Might be worth checking out ...

Good Mini for a Hawk Animal Companion
Marc Radle 81,

Shag Solomon Finish avatar

Thanks everyone!

That Glanjoram Hawklord Mage Knight figure is perfect! It's pretty much exactly what I envisioned my hawk looking like. I just found one one EBAY and snagged it.

Any reccomendations on the modifications? I can just grab one of the D&D minis which I have duplicates of and pull the figure off so I have a good base. Then, once I have the hawk sugically removed from the rest of the Mage Knight figure, I just need some sort of post so the hawk sits an inch or so above the base. Any ideas for a good post?

Also, is any type of glue best for this? Some sort of Crazy Glue?

Thanks!!!

I should have specified ... I'm looking for the plastic, pre-painted minis, not the metal. So, although some of those listed would be perfect, they are metal, so they will not work.

So, are there any plastic pre-painted minis out there like the metal ones you have suggested???

Good Mini for a Hawk Animal Companion
Marc Radle 81,

Shag Solomon Finish avatar

I am playing a Ranger and want to take a Hawk, Falcon, Eagle etc as my animal companion ... some kind of bird of prey, in other words.

Does anyone know if there is a good mini for something like this? I'm looking for a normal size bird, not a huge Dire or Celestial version, so scale is important. The only mini I've seen so far that is the right size / scale is a bat mini.

Does anyone know of a mini that will work????

Thanks!!!

Oracle - Focus as a name ...
Marc Radle 81,

Shag Solomon Finish avatar

Overall, I REALLY like the Oracle! It's sort of the Cleric version of a Sorcerer, but very much new and interesting at the same time.

One thing that really jumped out at me as I read and then re-read the class though: Focus.

The word focus implies more of an object. In fact, D&D has a pretty strong tradition of Focus items in the game already. In fact, a Divine Focus has already been established as a holy symbol for clerics.

So, I would strongly suggest coming up with a different term for this otherwise excellent class ability.

I would suggest maybe Calling.

Hey cool - I actually have a small connection to the Dune game!

I worked with Last Unicorn Games back in the day. I mainly worked on their ARIA: Canticle of the Monomyth RPG, but I also worked a little on the HERESY: Kingdom Come CCG and a few other odds and ends. Right around the time they got the license to do the Star Trek RPG (which meant moving across the country to LA to be closer to Paramount ... and which pretty much ended my working relationship with LUG, since I did not go out there with them) they also started work on the Dune game.

Some time after they were out in California, WOTC aquired the company. That's how WOTC came to put out this game, I assume.

If you look at one of Eric's scans in the auction, you can even see the logo I designed for Last Unicorn Games. Kind of cool to be a tiny part of something that is "near legendary status among game collectors"!

Oh, by the way - good luck on your auctions Eric!!! Have fun in London !!!

Animal Companion - Wolf and his Trip Attack
Marc Radle 81,

Shag Solomon Finish avatar

The wolf is listed as having a bite attack (I think it's 1d6 ... I don't have my books near by) plus Trip. I assume this means the wolf does both each round, right? Assuming so, in what order do these happen?

The order would seem to matter, becuase if the trip happens first, the wolf then gets a bonus to his bite since the opponent would now be prone.

Am I reading this correctly?

Thoughts? Official rulings?

Yeah, but if the mount is too weak it dies at the first fireball that hits the party.

I'm very firmly in the camp that says both the ranger and druid should be able to choose from the same full list of animals. I also thiink that the ranger should have his animal companion at full level progression (i.e not at level -3).

In fact, in my Spell-less Ranger article for Kobold Quarterly, I removed the level -3 so that spell-ess ranger's animal companion is on par with a druids.

Very cool class but ... was there a reason it wasn't designated open content. I checked the OGL material mention in KQ 11 spell-less ranger wasn't mentioned. If that was intended that's fine just curious.

Hey thanks - I'm glad you enjoyed it!

Hmmm ... to be honest, I never actually thought about that! I'm not sure how that works, exactly. If I had to make a guess, I would think that, since the Pathfinder ranger is open content, my varient would be too. Like I said though, I hadn't even considered the question before now! Maybe I'll get in touch with Wolfgang and get his thoughts, since he is the publisher ...

Thanks for bringing up the question!

OK, I'll be patient!

Since this is my first PaizoCon, I'm curious how the games are set up. For those that were at last year's PaizoCon, how many games were there? How long were they? What level ranges? Did you bring characters or were there pre rolled ones for you?

Any info / insight would be great!

The list of animal companions for rangers given in the Core rules is intended to be the complete list available for rangers. I could see us eventually doing a ranger feat that allows them to take ANY animal companion, but since rangers are themselves combat characters (more than druids, who are spellcasters more than they are melee/ranged characters), we wanted to set it up so their animal companions aren't exactly equal to druid animal companions.

Wouldn't the fact that Ranger companions are always effectively 3 levels behind the Druid companions be enough of a balancing mechanic? The Druid's pet is always going to be much better than the Ranger's simply as a result of the level difference.

Exactly. That's what I was getting at a little bit upsteam with my previous post ... it is why I removed the Druid level -3 rule from the Spell-less Ranger class variant in Kobold Quarterly. I really don't see any problem with letting the ranger use his actual level as his equivilent druid level. Even if you are not using my Spell-less variant, I would still house rule away the Ranger level -3 and go with Ranger level equals Druid level - it helps keep his animal companion alive as well as more fun and interesting to play.

OK, I have our con tickets and banquet tickets purchased. I have the hotel room reserved and the air fair is being secured.

So ... now what? :)

I was not at the last PaizoCon, so I'm not sure what the next steps are.

I assume at some point event sign ups open up. Do we know when this will happen and what the actual set up will be? Do we know yet how many events there will be and what they will be? I assume there will be a mix of actual games, discussion groups, Q&A's etc.

What else, if anything, happens between now and the time of the con that we need to be a part of?

Thanks! I can't wait for June!

You just lost me on this one, since it's quite clear in the Animal Companion portion of the Ranger description in the Main book that Rangers most certainly DO NOT simply count as a Druid in regards to AC selection. They have a more limited list, and that is worded to be a set restricted list.

I can see how you see that, per the Core RAW the Druid is restricted to essentially the same Companions only when they start (i.e. 1st level) while that seems to be exhaustive for the Ranger (Bears are also not on Ranger list)
I'm just coming at this from the angle of all of Paizo's posts on the topic, which never went out of the way to bar Rangers from other Companions,

yes they did. Jason or James James) said they didn't want the ranger to get as powerful animals as the druid.
Ranger = no bear, no Big Cat, no Dinosaur, etc.

Here's one thread where James weighed in:

Why can't a ranger have a pig for a friend?

I made this comment over on the other thread as well, but ...

It was in part because of this more limited animal companion list for rangers that I removed the Druid level -3 rule from the Spell-less Ranger class variant in KQ. I really think letting the ranger use his actual level as his equivilent druid level is not a problem at all and helps keep his animal companion alive as well as more fun and interesting to play.
