In honor of one of the deadliest of beasties in fantasy roleplaying games, which we like to call dragons, we wanted to give you all a chance to join in on the draconic fun!

Using rules for the Pathfinder RPG or 13th Age RPG, design a Midgard encounter with a dragon of any kind in its lair and send it to us for judging. The maximum length for entries is 1,500 words, and entries must be submitted on or before July 11, 2014, to be eligible. You’ll find the full details in the rules below.

A panel of judges will pick out five finalists to post on the Kobold Press website. Then we’ll ask the public to vote on the entry they think should win the grand prize!

Find out all the details by clicking the link below!

Hey all - I have a big ol' set of 55 Chessex dice for sale (7 standard sets of 7 dice each - d4, d6, d8, d10, d100, d12, and d20 PLUS 1 additional dice each of d4, d6, d8, d10, d100 and d12)

They're all from Chessex's various, marbled looking dice lines (Scarab, Marble, Vortex, Leaf etc). Each set is a different, but complimentary color scheme, so they all look great together, or you could split them up and have 7 different sets.

Check 'em out if you're interested :) Set of Chessex Dice

Remember that 'History of D&D' movie Kickstarter? It looked like it might be something pretty great - I think Paizo even kind of endorsed the project.

Does anyone know where that stands? Did it ever happen? Is the project still going or did it fade away?

Interesting Pathfinder comments:

AICN Tabletop wrote:
If it seems like I’m ignoring PATHFINDER in favor of DUNGEONS & DRAGONS, I assure you it’s not so. It’s just that Paizo’s so f**ing quiet right now. Aside from the adventure cardgame and the expected regular new sourcebooks, they haven’t really done anything big. It’s led some in the industry to speculate this is an intentional move. In the link, ICv2 columnist Scott Thorne states his thoughts that Paizo is going to let Wizards of the Coast take the limelight and draw in new and returning gamers with the launch of the new D&D edition. Once the initial excitement settles from the launch, that’s when they’ll make a move with...who knows? A Pathfinder 2nd Edition? A new campaign setting aside from Golarion? Who knows? Paizo’s not talking, which means they’re busy plotting. And with their new hire of Owen KC Stephens and their open call for designers, they’re plotting something big.

Hey everyone!

The good folks at Dungeonmastering.com approached me about doing a weekly blog about my work etc

dungeonmastering.com

It's called Pen & Pixel

Each week I’ll talk a bit about an illustration from my portfolio, explaining both the brainstorming and the backstory. Then, the reader who posts the Coolest Comment about it and/or that weeks blog (may be something serious or funny or insightful) gets the original illustration mailed to them, for free!

Nice! Awesome to see this bad boy featured on the front page!

There is just so much great stuff in this book.

In fact, all the great material actually caused a bit of a problem for me - while I was doing the layout, the articles were so interesting I kept stopping to read them.

Probably cost me an extra couple days of production time! :)

It was also great working with Ralph Horsley on that awesome cover art!

The 'Write a Review' link in the Reviews tab of some products seems to have vanished! I'm thinking this is in relation to the recent site upgrade.

Unfortunately, I just learned about this when someone tried to review the New Paths Compendium but could not. The lack of that 'Write a Review' link certainly makes it hard for people to review products :)

Here are two examples of Review Tabs missing the 'Write a Review' link:

OK, it seems like most folks seem to feel Spellstrike probably cannot be used in conjunction with the Spring Attack feat. I've done some searching here on the boards and there are a couple threads, with various viewpoints, but so far it looks as though there has been no official clarification, errata or FAQ.

The question is, can a Magus use his Spellstrike ability in conjunction with the Spring Attack feat?

The Spring Attack feat says, in part "As a full-round action, you can move up to your speed and make a single melee attack". I understand that the "As a full-round action" part is important here - it means you can't do anything else as part of Spring Attack which requites a standard action.

Spellstrike says "whenever a magus casts a spell with a range of “touch” from the magus spell list, he can deliver the spell through any weapon he is wielding as part of a melee attack. Instead of the free melee touch attack normally allowed to deliver the spell, a magus can make one free melee attack with his weapon (at his highest base attack bonus) as part of casting this spell."

This would certainly seem to imply the two can't be used together

However, Spellstrike ALSO says "If the magus makes this attack in concert with spell combat"

... and Spell Combat says "As a full-round action ..."

So ... Spellstrike *CAN* be used as part of Spell Combat, which is a full-round action, so it would seem that Spellstrike should also be able to be used with Spring Attack, which is also a full-round action.

Clicking the FAQ button might be a good idea so this can be calrified (unless of course, it already HAS been officially clarified and I just missed it!)

Thanks!

Hey everyone! I really want to make it to PaizoCon this summer but cross-country plane tickets are not cheap, so I thought I would offer a bunch of my original art work on Ebay - the proceeds will go into my "Trying to Get to PaizoCon" fund :)

Each piece is the original pen and ink illustration which was commissioned for publication in a fantasy RPG book or product

Each original pen and ink illustration is done on professional quality inking paper and is suitable for matting and/or framing.

Each original is at least 8.5 x 11", although most are closer to 10 x 12" in size.

Every piece is signed by the artist (that would be me :) I'd also be happy to personalize an illustration if so desired.

Original Art for Sale :)

Please check them out if you're interested and help a heck of a swell guy get to PaizoCon :)

Advanced Races #8: Lamia now available from Kobold Press!

Lamia tread a strange path of violence and magic—and for a tiny few, redemption.

Though extremely rare, lamia adventurers do exist. They are almost exclusively outcasts who have struck out on their own or escaped the wickedness of their brethren. Cut off from the matriarchy and its debauched rituals, might they be something more than monsters? Might they become...heroes?

Advanced Races 8: Lamia gives you everything you need to play a lamia adventures:

- 8 alternative racial traits including Constrict, Mystical Tattoo, and Wisdom damage

- 6 new lamia feats including Highborn Lamia, Serpent's Eyes, and Snake's Tongue

- 2 new prestige classes, new favored class options, a new spell and oracle mystery, and more!

The lamia culture, society and mystery cult/moon centered quasi religion really got inside my head as I wrote this and I’m really, REALLY proud of the results!

I hope everyone checks it out! :)

If a cleric casts animate dead on a corpse in order to create a zombie, the spell takes one standard action to cast.

If he wants that zombie have a template (say, a Plague Zombie) he also needs to cast contagion. This takes an additional standard action, yes? So, creating a Plague Zombie requires 2 rounds?

Are there any rules stating which order these spells need to be cast, and if they need to happen immediately, one after the other? In other words, according to the rules, could a cleric cast animate dead to create the zombie, let the zombie fight for a few rounds and then cast contagion on the same zombie, turning him into a Plague Zombie? Or, could the cleric cast contagion on a corpse first, and then come back a few rounds later and cast animate dead so that the resulting zombie created is a Plague zombie?

Please keep in mind I realize that in a home game, DM's and players can resolve things types of issues themselves if needed. I'm specifically asking if there are actual, written rules that address these questions

Thanks!

I know Paizo does not want to accept PayPal for ongoing things like subscriptions. However, I seem to recall a while back a large number of folks asking why Paizo couldn't at least accept PayPal for single purchases. I think someone (I'm thinking Vic?) even commenting that it was not a bad idea and that it would be looked into.

Assuming I'm remembering this correctly, is this close to happening yet? I do have to admit, I freakin' love ya Paizo, but not accepting PayPal even for single purchases is really a pain! For instance, I would like to pay for PaizoCon tickets (admission and banquet) with PayPal but I can't (can I?)

Thanks!

In case anyone missed it, the New Paths Compendium from Kobold Press has now officially been announced :)

The New Paths Compendium collects all the New Paths classes into a brand new print/pdf book with a completely new layout and organization - the classes themselves are all together in a Classes chapter, all the archetypes and spells get their own chapters, as do all the feats (close to 100 of 'em!)

In addition, there are a number of cool, brand-new things inside - 2 of which are exclusive to this book!

The popular savant class from the pages of Kobold Quarterly, completely updated and expanded!

A brand-new spell-less ranger variant class, the skin-changer! That's right, instead of a favored enemy and animal companion, the skin-changer can shapeshift into animal form (using a specialized form of wild shape called animal shape) right out of the gate at first level! He also gets a specialized type of combat style, called Animal Combat that makes the skin-changer one heck of a combatant when in animal form

Last but not least, the theurge, a base class that combines arcane and divine in new and interesting ways!

New Paths Compendium includes:

  • 28 new archetypes for monks, ninjas, gunslingers, barbarians, fighters, clerics, and 7 Compendium classes
  • 7 tracking sheets for animal companions, favored enemies, prepared spells, summoned monsters and more
  • 20 new spells for druids, rangers, shaman, and more
  • Almost 100 new feats for new and existing classes

The seven Compendium classes each bring something new to your Pathfinder Roleplaying Game:

  • The spell-less ranger, a skilled warrior of the wilderness
  • The shaman, with otherworldly new abilities and an animal spirit guide
  • The battle scion, a master of sword and spell
  • The white necromancer, wielding death magic for the side of Good
  • The elven archer, deadly ranged fighter capable of astonishing feats of marksmanship
  • The savant, master of all trades (if only for an instant)
  • The all-new theurge class, combining arcane and divine power!

And, preorders receive the PDF for free :) Find out more in the Product forum: New Paths Compendium

There will be more official announcements on this front soon of course, but all I can say is ... WOW, there are a lot of spells in this thing (as in, over 700)!!!!

Speaking of new spells, how do more than 170 new Druid/Shaman spells sound???

I've never played PFS but I'm thinking I'd like to give it a try. The problem is, I don't know of any games in my area; I'm not even sure who the Venture Captain in charge of my area is.

How do I find these things out and get in contact with the people I need to?

I'm in the Harrisburg, Pennsylvania region.

I'm curious - what are the best of the current (or at least fairly recent) PFS scenarios?

This is obviously opinion, but I'd be interested to see which scenarios people consider to be the best? More to the point, why? What makes that scenario the best, both in terms of an adventure, but even more in terms of PFS play?

I'm really hoping to get some great, insightful answers here ... so get some coffee and start thinking :)

Andoran

Nice! I really love that cover art :)

1 person marked this as FAQ candidate.

Can a paladin activate smite evil against mirror image? I know it would be harder to hit and all that. The question is can the paladin activate the ability in the first place? We had this come up and our DM ruled that since a paladin needs to see the target in order to use Smite Evil, a target under the mirror image spell (or displacement etc) cannot be smited at all because the paladin can't see the target.

Andoran

So, I'm creating a High-Level Two-Weapon Fighter and I need help making sure the iterative attacks are correct

15th level fighter gets 3 attacks a round (for a full attack of course):
+15/+10/+5

He has a STR of 19 so a +4 bonus to hit gives us:
+19/+14/+9

He wields dual scimitars and has the following relevant feats:
- Power Attack (assume that he always uses power attack)
- Two-Weapon Fighting
- Improved Two-Weapon Fighting
- Double Slice

So, the question is, just how many attacks does this fighter get with his primary weapon (scimitar) and his offhand weapon (scimitar) when he's full attacking? What would the specific attack bonuses be?

I have tried repeatedly to close the Adventure Card Game thread (sorry, it's just not my cup of tea) by clicking the little triangle to the left of the title but to no avail!

I've tried it on my iPhone and I've tried it on my actual desktop PC, and every time, the space where all the forum message threads should be goes white (the menu bar across the top and all the logos and links on the left remain though.) If I refresh the page, it then displays normally again BUT the Adventure Card Game thread is still open in all its glory!

I know the gang at Paizo is pushing the card game hard, but this is a bit much! :) (and yes, I'm kidding - lest anyone think I actually believe Paizo is forcing us to see all the card game threads as a back-handed marketing ploy ;)

I'm thinking on a new character and I'm considering trying a reach weapon for the first time (a dwarf with a dwarven longaxe from the Advanced Race Guide)

I'm noticing that the rules make choking up a bit on the haft and fighting within 5' WAAAY to difficult - in fact, it seems to be all but impossible.

According to the rules you use a reach weapon to strike opponents 10 feet away, but you can't use it against an adjacent foe. Can't, as in not at all ... even with a penalty?

I've researched and actually studied both eastern martial arts and western weapon fighting and using a slightly longer weapon both up close and a few feet back is very possible with some training.

The Polearm Master Fighter archetype *can* shorten the grip on his spear or polearm with reach and use it against adjacent targets ... BUT This action results in a –4 penalty on attack rolls and it replaces bravery. I could see a -2, but not a -4.

And, unless I'm missing something, taking the Polearm Master Fighter archetype seems to be about the only way you can even do this at all in the game. I don't see any official Pathfinder feats that allow one to do anything similar.

I guess my comment / question is ... is it really all but impossible according to the rules to choke up on the haft a little bit and fight with a reach weapon up close? Is there something obvious that I'm just missing? Is reach really considered THAT big a deal that it needs such excessive in-game balancing?

Thanks!!
