Appearance & Personality

Magnus is a tall, lithe elf. He is in excellent physical condition thanks to his training and adventuring. He is handsome, but not overtly beautiful as many elves. He wears his golden hair just past shoulder length and swept back, displaying his Elvin features fully. He tends to wear the most expensive clothing that he can afford. His typical outfits are open-necked silk shirts (of any color that catches his fancy) sometimes with a vest. Pants of soft leather, finely tooled leather boots, a brightly colored cloak or half-cape, long, beautifully decorated duelists gloves, and an extremely wide-brimmed & colorful hat, with one side folded up and held in place with a ridiculously long feather. His cape is clasped with a pin signifying his dueling club, 'The Couatl's Wing'. He also wears earrings in either one or both ears depending upon his mood, giving him an even more rakish appearance.

He carries an exquisite rapier in a well-worn sheath, and several daggers on and about his person.(Some visible, some not.) On his back he carries an elvish-made longbow and small quiver along with a sheathed longsword of high-quality dwarven make.

Magnus is extremely confident, and perhaps just a trifle egotistical. He thinks of himself as a swashbuckler, and always tries to outdo whatever stunt he has done before. (At least when with the same audience.) His mouth is probably the only thing faster than his rapier. And it does tend to get him into (and out of) a lot of trouble.

His magic and weapons-play tends to be more theatrical than overpowering, although he does have a few potent spells he saves for those who need a little more convincing. He is unafraid to take the fight to the enemy, and in fact prefers to be the center of attention. (He is not beyond doing things to attract attention if he feels he is not getting his fair share.) But he also knows that he cannot take many hits, and so looks for items (Spells, scrolls, potions, rings) to boost his hit points and physical stats.

'Magnus Darkenstar' is actually a very poor Common translation of his elvish name, and it annoys his proud parents to no end when he introduces himself that way. So of course he always goes by that name.

Magnus pays lip service to most of the gods of magic and luck, no matter their original sphere or race of origin. But his favorite deity by far is Cayden.

History

Spoiler:

Magnus was born to a proud, minor, noble elvin family. He showed early promise in the mystic arts, and was originally apprenticed to a wizard that the family hoped would bring their son (and them) honor and prestige. And the lad showed great promise. Unfortunately the boy was more interested in 'practical applications' of his studies (IE = 'practical jokes') than the actual lessons he was supposed to be learning. His apprenticeship was short-lived. Even by Human standards.

He was next apprenticed to a trade where his magical talents would at least not be wasted. But he lacked the desire, or ability, to apply himself to mundane work. This pattern continued for a while until at last the family gave in to his wishes and enrolled him in a martial academy. Here he finally learned a little self-discipline, if not much self-control.

After graduating the martial academy (not at the top of his class, but he did graduate) he decided that an adventuring life best suited his talents and mindset. Much to his family's dismay. He added insult to injury by deciding to join a Dueling Club that, while once highly esteemed, had fallen to what his parents deemed little more than a place where a gaggle of upstart youths caroused and lived on their predecessor's glory. The Couatl's Wing.

It was here that young Magnus finally came into his own, learning to blend his magical and martial training into the battle dance of the Magus.

Alas, even here Magnus found that his mouth could get him into more trouble that even his skill could get him out of. After dallying with one to many rich men's wives, and mistakenly bragging about it while drunk TO one of the men in question at a tavern in Opal, his master at the Dueling club 'suggested' that Magnus pursue a hidden treasure that legend said the original founders of the Couatl's Wing had hidden in a secret location. A location that was NOT in Opal. So Magnus headed forth in search of a legendary treasure. And perhaps a little glory and wealth.

It has been years. (Not long as an elf looks at time, but more than long enough for most of the humanoids in Opal to have forgotten about his little, indiscretions.) Magnus has just recently returned to Opal. He does not appear to carry any legendary treasure, but drops hints that he may have actually found clues to it's location. He has grown in skill and knowledge during his travels, and looks for a chance to prove himself with an adventuring group in his own backyard.
