They are called...

The Order of Holy Sentinels

Call of Cthulhu is great fun and every RPG fan should read this massively influential game.

And this is a big BUT ...

The real reason to own Call of Cthulhu is the adventures and campaigns. CoC adventures include amongst their ranks some of the greatest RPG products ever published.

So true...I'm gearing up to run Masks again!

And I'd love to run Tatters of the King.

I love the Strange Aeons adventures as well. Some gems in there.

Actually, some of the most evocative player scenes have come in CoC. When I playtested Cthulhu Invictus (Horror Roleplaying in Imperial Rome) the look on the face of the player who played a gladiator when he saw a Dark Young of Shub-Niggurath appear in an arena filled with innocent victims...and then he jumped in to face it...priceless...

The mad giggling of a player when a Shan-possessed child killed his father...And the the yells of shock and surprise when, while describing a scene where blood was dripping onto the faces of the players' characters in game, and suddenly water dripped coincidentally from the ceiling...

WOTC isn't going to advertise to 3PP that you can quite easily skirt the GSL, and Goodman isn't going to advertise to WOTC HOW they're skirting the GSL before release...

Why not?

Osirion (Pathfinder Adventure Path Charter Subscriber; Companion Subscriber)

I've played in two sessions so far.

I really like the game. I runs like others have said, 'fast and furious'...except when a player disengages until his turn and then takes 5-10 minutes to figure out what is going on and what to do.

{Caveat: This (these) same player(s) do this in our 3.5 game, so it is not game specific.}

This is a shame, since the board is very dynamic, which I really like. That being said, I played RotKK and had several players moving around a lot on the board (and these w/out spring attack, etc feats), so maybe we've just gotten a bit stale in 3.5...

Fights at this level DO take longer in my opinion though. However, I've run a PFRPG test for 1st level and the fight took longer than 3.5 RAW. (extra hit points, more options, etc)

Anyway, the MAIN thing I like about the combat (have played up to the Ironfoot(tooth?) encounter in Keep) is that a victory (that's right! Victory..no TPK :P...Meatgrinder on the Shadowfell...whatever...) feels like a team effort.

Spoiler:
{the climax of the battle was when my pally's daily hit for almost max damage (25/27), and popped the fighter back up with the surge...then he crit'ed on his attack and finished that damn goblin

However, I really dislike the fluff that WotC has given us (sooooo happy that Eberron won't change so much) and wonder why it is so necessary.

For sure, I will be importing healing surges to 3.5 (at least the second wind mechanic), and dropping the 1-2-1 (which is dumb anyway).

Anyway, that's my report. The guy who GM'ed the game keeps asking me when I'm going to run 4e so he can play..hehe...

Technically, as a 20th lvl caster, a Solar could have the spell Gate memorized, and cast it themselves. A Planetar can do the same thing, actually...

Aw....I love Celestial Cascades...

Actually, there was this one Story Hour post back on EnWorld were the author described this phenomenon happening in his game. Some of you might remember..it was the one where the succubi was redeemed by the paladin...

..come to think of it, we need to track this GM down. He KNEW how to run a high-level game!

I saw Mary had posted here. She always has good insight.

I would add to that plot-breaking spells like find the path, etc.

Yup they killed Ellistraee. I'm a bit upset about this.

Her and Kelemvor are my two favorite FR deities. Are they going to kill him too?

I heard they killed Helm..How about Torm?

Osirion (Pathfinder Adventure Path Charter Subscriber; Companion Subscriber)

I've read through some of the Punjar Gazetteer, and it seems to me pretty gritty and racy even for a GSL-supported work.

the author talks about Pimps and the like..there is much reference to drug culture...the city is unabashedly evil...

I like it..the dark and evil Zamora-type city, but I thought this was a no,no in the new WotC 4e culture.

So..anyone know how Goodman Games is doing this?

Right. You can incorporate those Set Pieces into the AP. Maybe they'll have a side bar for suggestions, or you can leave them out and use them in conjunction with your own, non-AP Golarion.

Ok, I've noticed that you follow Razz around and seem to answer every, single, regenerating (TROLL!), post Razz makes on 4e.

I have to ask, how are you behaving any different than he does? I mean, I know that his posts are inflammatory, especially to someone who likes 4e, but I fail to see how your post-stalking is much better. To a large degree, I think its behavior like this (both you & Razz) that contribute to the ill will between the fans of 3.5 and 4e.

The 'Ling

What underling said. I LIKE both games. Yes, it is possible.

I got some 3.5 games going. A Pathfinder playtest and I have plans for more. I am playing in a 4e game, and have a great idea for Punjar or maybe an Eberron one come the fall. I also play HERO and WH40K RPG, CoC...I have no conflict.

Frankly, I just don't understand the snide remarks and sniping. It would be nice if our boards community just stopped this.

Kelvin273 wrote:

From what I've heard, combat in 4e gets longer as you go up in level because the PCs damage doesn't keep up with monster hp. What I've been able to slog through of the 4e PHB seems to confirm that. Couple that with the fact that you can't just memorize one description of an ability in the "exception-based designed" 4e, but have to look at each individual power description even for similar powers, and the epic length isn't much of a surprise.

Now why they decided to do a video to showcase how boring and complicated their game gets at high levels, I have no idea.

In my experience it hasn't been shorter. However, I'm not convinced that it is necessarily the fault of the rules. It seems to be the same thing that plagues 3.5 games...a player takes too long to decide what to do. Usually its this same player who is not engaged in what is going on at the moment on the board and has to take a few minutes to figure out what has changed since his last go round. Then the player, takes several minutes to decide what to use. (Ironically, its usually the same players that slowed things down in 3.5 too)

The players who are watching what is going on and have decided what to do (with contingencies if the board changes to much), take less than a minute.

Haven't played it in years, but in college we had an awesome Pendragon campaign.

Loved the Passion and Attribute systems, and the adventures were always top notch and a good read.

Osirion (Pathfinder Adventure Path Charter Subscriber; Companion Subscriber)

I like it a lot. The rules are simple. Honestly, I have played and seen people finish these so-called mind-bending, insanity-laden campaigns. If players are into investigating and careful planning to build up to a advantageous situation, it can be a very rewarding gaming experience.

However, if players are used to the 'clear the dungeon' mentality or have this sense of heroic invincibility, its not the game for them. That is not to say that they cannot be heroes though.

(Thanks for the heads up joe!)

The Punjar Gazetteer looks pretty interesting (free at Free RPG day). If they do put out adventures in august, I may have to check them out. They look like they'll be city-type adventures.

Looks like a trilogy...Sellswords of Punjar, (DCC 53), the in sept and oct, Six Against Punjar and Thrones of Punjar. There are previews/summaries of them in the Gaz'.

Osirion (Pathfinder Adventure Path Charter Subscriber; Companion Subscriber)

Yah...how do you guys (Paizo) do it?

The D1.5 was 1)very high production value (color artwork!) 2)was an actual adventure, not just an encounter. And it was free!

rclifton wrote:
$90 is pretty cheap for a one day event that, if properly run, can draw in some good business and create new customers...

Right..think about it. One set of 4e books sold already pays for one box of the Free RPG stuff. In fact, one of the buddies that played in my demo bought a set, and two others bought some Pathfinder Chronicles (Gazetteer and Korvosa) stuff.

Osirion (Pathfinder Adventure Path Charter Subscriber; Companion Subscriber)

Since I ran a demo, I got some more goodies, but I only took the ones I thought I would use, the 4e encounter/module, the matching dungeon tiles, the Goodman Games Gazeeter (Interestingly, they say on the inside back cover that their 4e game adventures are coming out in August...guess this was printed before they new about the moratorium until oct 1 or they have a separate non-GSL deal already), the Song of Ice and Fire RPG preview/encounter (which looks really, really cool), the Harn Product (also a very good production value..surprised actually that Columbia games was able to do this).

And I got a cool Celtic d20 and a d6 that had "2nd annual Free RPG day" on the 1's face.

The manager felt it went really well. Lots of games were being demo'ed, and product was flying off the shelves.

Osirion (Pathfinder Adventure Path Charter Subscriber; Companion Subscriber)

Revenge of the Kobold king is awesome!

I have to report that Paizo outdid itself again with the Free RPG product. It was by far and away the highest production value of any of the other freebies, and the only one that I saw in color. Artwise, the Harn product came a close second, and then the Song of Ice and Fire preview was also well done. I haven't looked through the 4e item since another DM runs in my regular group and I'll give it to him (it did come with a dungeon tile thingy though)

Also, I ran the adventure as a demo for the store that participated for some players who had heard about Paizo and wanted to play a Pathfinder game. The branding is very, very catchy. They really enjoyed it, though we only got through the second encounter. I allowed the participants to pick through the 8 stated iconics (I bumped Selah, Ezra, Lem, and Harsk to 5th from their 4th level incarnation in River of Darkness). The players chose Valero, Kyra, Merisel, and Ezra.

I recommend three regulators, though if you want more of a challenge for the PCs, maybe 4 (Pay Day and the others for party+1 foes)

Spoiler:
I have to say, it has the potential to be a TPK on the ambush since all the baddies can converge on the PCs once they trip the traps out in the open. The PCs were delayed enough to let the druid fully buff and then he started blasting away with call lightning taking out Ezra with one big Ka-Boom! All hell broke loose and Merisel ended up almost dying from being buried by the Azlanti beetle. Valeros drove away the druid and her and Kyra were the last ones standing. The druid and one kobold ranger got away. The PCs also went off the rails, leaving town before Kreed could send his goons. Then they ambushed the goons on the road just inside the forest..hehe...killing them all. Great work Paizo guys. Great work Mr. Logue!

Osirion (Pathfinder Adventure Path Charter Subscriber; Companion Subscriber)

Yes. That decision was made by your store. Different stores have different policies. The FLGS I went to, limited peeps to 1 item/person.

My character ShakaKhan was born in the drow city of Tleiki'liki'li. It was a hard life for a C-G rebel like him because the priestesses of Loth would kick him in the nads. When he was 17, he killed his second cousin because they were gum-smacking at him. He fled to the surface where he met Mo, Larry, and Curly and set off on quest to calm the evil in his spleen. He is brooding, silent, and smelly. His hair color is blue and he looks like Lindsey Lohan. His battle cry is "come, scum, taste my vomit!

Osirion (Pathfinder Adventure Path Charter Subscriber; Companion Subscriber)

Raptor Coast might work well for Dark Vistas.

Osirion (Pathfinder Adventure Path Charter Subscriber; Companion Subscriber)

i must be an exception.

I've run high-level adventures and my PCs have loved them. I never was totally put out and we even ran an epic battle (actually pre-epic, ~levels 17-19) at the gates of a Shade-controlled Iriaebor, complete with land, air, and even underground battles.

And....the PCs then fought a Slaad Lord near Silverymoon.

And...they did a scry an fry on a chosen of the yuan-ti god.

And...they survived a highlevel assassination attempt by githyanki as a prelude to the Githyanki wars.

Then one of them got deployed and another moved away...the game is in deep freeze.

However, I do like what I see so far to be able to extend play at both low and high-levels. My personal beefs are the cheat spells (teleport, find the path, scry, etc) that can ruin a plot or story. Hopefully, those will be addressed.

Pramas designed WHFRP, 2nd edition which is not a hard system, but YMMV. He's done some great work w/Green Ronin, especially the Freeport stuff.

That said, I kind of disagree with him. I think today's teens and near-teens are pretty savvy especially with MMOs, CRPGs and FPS's that are pretty complicated to get the hang of with both rules, tactics, and hand-eye-coordination nuances. While they may gloss over the rulesbook, they will quickly get the game once its played on the board.

In my experience with 4.0 so far, it is an easy game to pick up once you get to playing it on the table.

Still, I will be playing both 3.5 and 4.0. To me, it is a different game...almost a different incarnation. As if you were playing Classic Traveller, or Megatraveller vs d20 or Gurps Traveller. Same game at its heart, but a slightly different feel.

The great thing is, these other trav's..They co-exist. I think D&D can do the same.
