Once you have the basic details, try expanding on them, asking how your character's powers and abilities fit into what you've written so far. Don't just say "she can cast X", tell me why she casts that in her life, or how it's helped her in the past. Things like that. ^^

I probably won't do a serious examination of backstories for at least a week. I want to give you time to write them, after all. ^^

OIC! OK, so let me ask you this...what kind of guidelines are you thinking of in terms background. I mean, many paragraphs, just a few short ones, from day of birth forward kind of thing, or more of a highlight reel?

As far as crafting for alchemists goes, Master Craftsman is a thing. I also allow Retraining rules, so it would be entirely possible to change some of your early feats into Wondrous Item/Arms and Armor and start heavy-duty crafting as early as Level 5.

(Or keep them in place and just wait until Level 7 to really get into gear. o_O Gunslingers do need a certain basic set of feats to be truly effective. Also, I can't guarantee you'll always have the ability to buy raw materials for ammo - stock up early and often.)

Could you point me in the direction of the Retraining rules; either which book (which I likely have) or a link? I've heard of this, but don't remember actually reading them, as I previously had a house rule for retraining.

I to would like to throw my hat in the ring, by declaring that both parties are nucking futz!

Oh, wait. Wrong ring. :p

Given all of the options that are available, I'll have to give it a little thought, although I have an idea for a a fighter/oracle combo that might be worth it's weight. I'll work on an initial submission here in the course of the next day or so. It sounds like we have some time to iron out the kinks before anything happens.

May the best people win!

Congrats everyone. Have fun.

No, she's still here. That being said, I can understand where Fnord is coming from. Given the circumstances, I didn't want to influence his decision, and let this drag out further (if he didn't want to). I'm glad to hear that he is going to work on a do-over, and I'll be placing Tessara at the front of the line when his new recruitment thread appears.

I'm with Monkeygod on this one. I've never had a chance to play a Drow for very long or very effectively. As to what kind of PC I would have,, it's hard to say. It would depend on what the actual circumstances of the campaign are (i.e. good v. evil, seeking power v. enlightenment, etc.)

Honest question here: Have you had a chance to look at the expanded Mythic books that Legendary Games put out recently, via their Kickstarter? If not, then let me be the first to tell you that some of their 'mythic' monsters will blow the doors off of just about any party.

As an example, imagine the Terrasque. Big, strong, toughest creature that PF came up with, right? One of it's (few) weaknesses is that, for the most part, it doesn't move very far very fast (outside of it's charge ability). Now imagine it with ranged attacks, its charge speed every round as a move action,, and Hulk-class jumping ability!

Good luck...

Oh, and it's CR30/MR10!

Luckily my RL GM has not discovered those books yet. I pray he doesn't see them at GenCon. Our party will end up having to fight 8 of them.

LOL. I showed my wife the stats for the Mythic Terrasque (she is in my RL group), and I was told point blank that if I ever wanted to see her boobs again, that creature was not allowed to even sniff around our table! ROFL.

...

Guess which I would rather see...

Wow! I must say, S.A.M., you have acquired a fine list to choose from. I personally would play any of them, but my personal favorite would be the Council of Night, and any of the ones involving technology.

Well, when I was living in Washington State about a decade ago, my roommate and I made several home-brewed batches of a Fat Tire 'analogue' that were pretty good; we managed with at least one batch to get the ABV up to 5.9%. I haven't done it in several years though; it's kind of hard to keep the beer batch in 'a cool, dry place,' when the street in front your house is starting to melt (Welcome to South Texas!)

I can try to answer a question or two, if you want.

Ouch. I had heard that Kingmaker was not an easy AP to run, but I never realized that it was so 'labor' intensive. You have my condolences, mdt.

Alternatively, Barbarian might also be quite nice...

But still, this is a pretty strong character already, I think. Variant Multiclassing would be able to make him even stronger, but should I go for that?

I asked a couple of days ago, but no answer.

IMHO, I think that, while I can appreciate what Paizo did with variant multiclassing (VM), it seems like that the trade off is not very even. Your giving up 5 feats, and in return, you only seem to get few, diluted versions of the other class abilities. Like a lot of the sub-systems in PU (again, IMHO), this seems sort of substandard, unless you're trying to limit the campaign in some way, in an attempt to reduce the power gaming aspects.

@Dave Thanks for setting up a submissions list. On a game like this, it's likely to turn into a cattle call, LOL

Lord Manticore, considering that I will be using Mythic versions of the demons in the campaign, due to loving their signature abilities, I would hardly find it fair denying Mythic options from the same publisher. The options are awesome anyway. Consider the Mythic options from Legendary Games available for your use!

As for Skill Unlocks and Scale-able Items, are they on the SRD? I do not have Pathfinder Unchained, unfortunately. :/

@Glory: Unfortunately, while skill unlocks are mentioned in the Unchained Rogue entry on the site, the owner has not gotten around to adding either the skill unlocks or the scalable items to his database. :( Personally, I think that the skill unlocks adds at least some additional benefits to each skill, but if you don't have access to it, I completely understand, and won't force the issue further. Also, I've created the character that I am submitting, although I have not yet written up a back story. I'll post here under the avatar name of Grimli.

@Shi'Vatha: Hey dude, long time no see. :) I'm not sure if I'm going to run another PbP anytime soon, but I still have you on my short list.

@Glory: I can personally vouch for Shi'Vatha's character. He ran it in my Slumbering Tsar PbP campaign last year, and while the campaign petered out from lack of characters (and RL issues on my end), his 'unique' character was very good and he does role-play his part very well. IF it came down to choosing between him and me for a spot, I'd choose him without reservation. Just my 2cp.

Hello Glory of the Crusades!

I have a couple of questions and a character concept that I would like to run by you:

Will you allow the extra materials from Legendary Games' Mythic books (i.e. Mythic Hero, Mythic Spells) to be used?
Also, and I know that some of this has been asked, but more specifically, are you allowing skill unlocks and scalable items from Unchained?

So, as to my concept, I am thinking of a gnome investigator/oracle of life. Gnomes are very inquisitive by (almost required) nature. That, and considering this is a 'martial' campaign, every tank is going to need a band-aid now and again. What do you think?

Backed! I'm #89 (found out at lunch, after hibernating, post end-of-tax season) :)

Pledged...at least at what I can afford. :(

Has anyone found out if we can up our pledge after the KS ends?

I'm afraid that I'm going to have to bow out; work calls unfortunately. Corporate returns are due Monday night, and with only 3 CPAs in the firm (including myself), I'm going to be very busy from now until April 15th.

Good hunting everyone!

Just a quick question: are the simple class templates open as well? From the Monster Codex...I have an idea running through my mind; it has to do with training as a young child, and then taking up the oracle/investigator path.

GM Rednal wrote:
*Rubs chin* Without giving anything up, pretty much nil, since the added points wouldn't be fair to the other players. You could, however, take the Advanced template and thematically style it as a result of being a pureblood Azlanti (heck, rename it to that you want to) - in which case you'd pay a class level and I would be quite willing to accept it.

Not a problem, Rednal. I might go that route, or choose something else, or maybe no template at all. I believe that someone else mentioned how nasty some of those templates are.

Just asking...what are that odds of allowing a pureblood Azlanti in? Just curious, it's not a dealbreaker or anything...

I'd like to dot for interest. My first thought would be to have an oracle/investigator type in his/her parents' footsteps in uncovering ancient secrets. My knowledge of Lovecraft is somewhat limited, I probably know enough to be dangerous...mostly to myself, LOL

EDIT: What are the odds of being a pureblood Azlanti have in being allowed?

Male Drow Noble Accountant 12/Monk 10

LOL Monkeygod, point well taken. I would in fact, be very interested in taking the new Mythic stuff for a stroll...

1 person marked this as a favorite.
Male Drow Noble Accountant 12/Monk 10

I, personally, wouldn't mind opening up some 3PP stuff, primarily anything that would be available on the SRD site. This way, we can play around with the upcoming Mythic Mania stuff that is coming out later this spring. I'm not sure if I would change anything to Tessara at this point, but I appreciate looking forward to some additional fun. :)

If it's not too late, I'd like to throw my hat into the ring, as my character from my own attempt at running this adventure path is already setup and ready to go. Please let me know if an oracle/arcanist would be accepted for consideration.

DM Fnord wrote:

I've started taking one of the AP's (not saying which one) and basically super-sizing it to start epic. (A nightmare)

Which one is the Terrasque in? (Seems there are now 26...)

@ fnord: The one that I was referring to was in the Mythic Bestiary that is coming out in May (ish) from Legendary Games. I was on the Kickstarter for that, and I got a beta pdf a couple of weeks ago. My jaw dropped when I saw some of those damned things! And the terrasque really takes the cake.

As for leadership, unless we are planning to deal with a mass battle that would, for all intents and purposes, involve each of us handling ~200 low-level combatants in battle, I'm not sure if the 'followers' part really matters. I mean, Tessara has a ring of the eccliarch (sp, I'm sure), that doubles the number of followers that I can have, or about the equivalent of an under-strength regiment. Using the Epic rules to give us 10x that amount is ludicrous!

What I think we're negotiating over is the cohort; about the only other character that could hang with us epic/mythic types at this point. Using fnord's guidelines, I think that using the Epic Leadership feat is really overkill and would make designing encounters that much more difficult. And a 17th level cohort can come in really handy. Remember: they have plenty of stuff to work with as well (i.e. high hp; most, if not all of their useful class abilities; well stated magic items; etc.). Are they going to stand up to a terrasque? Nope, but then again, neither are we.

In my case, my cohort is a shapeshifting spy, and she works quite well. I know how to role-play her: she's great for what she does, and can add to the combat, but 'she' is definitely NOT front-line material, and would likely get splatted after a few rounds, particularly if the dice went against me.

IMHO, the Leadership guidelines are fine.

Just my 3cp.

DM Fnord wrote:

EPIC LEADERSHIP

Monkeygod brought this up in the recruitment thread.

IIRC, it had been considered that cohorts shouldn't be a viable combat partner.

I'm not opposed to discussing it.

Especially since I am the last active person from the original group. Bwahahaha. :)

I am opposed to introducing anything from 3.5, or 3pp. So let's talk about expanding the leadership table instead.

Much of the rule choices governing the game are designed to curtail munchkin antics and promote team work.

Here are a few issues I have with what I have seen from cohorts (not necessarily this game):

Using the cohort to be a craft slave (game rule forbids this one, check)
Using the cohort as a buff-bot.
Using the cohort to design an uber combo killing machine, effectively an extension of the PC.

Keep in mind, that adding a 23rd level cohort (or more likely, several of them) is a significant force multiplier.

Assuming a party of 4 25th level characters. An effective encounter would require something in the neighborhood of a half dozen 20+ level bad guys, or one Tarrasque on steroids. Add four 23rd level cohorts to the mix and consider what force multiplication would be necessary to have an encounter that lasted through one complete round.

That party of 8 could invade hell, and likely win. (Dis challenge anyone?)

So how would increasing cohort levels add appreciably to the game (without causing the GM to run screaming for the horizon)?

Hey, fnord, have you seen the Mythic Terrasque that Legendary Games created as part of their Mythic book line? If not, I'll give you a peek: it's a CR 30/MR 10 with around 1,200 hp, but it may as well be the infinity sign, as between regenerative hp, ridiculously high DR and SR, and a ranged (?!?!) attack (in addition to its standard charge attack), and I would say 'Bring it!" to all 8 characters. At the very best, it would be a lesson in attrition, LOL.

just my 2cp today. ;)

Male Drow Noble Accountant 12/Monk 10

Perhaps after tax season is over? I'd be willing to pitch in, but right now, I'm not going to have extra time to devote to plotting and such, at least until I've gotten some of my files off of my desk. Sorry, fnord.

Male Drow Noble Accountant 12/Monk 10

@CDL - Im sorry to hear about your leaving. From prior postings that I've seen, I beleive that you will be missed in this campaign.

@Fnord - I have to ask, where does this leave us? Unless I am mistaken, we are down to two people. I am more than willing to keep playing, but considering that I had to shutter both of my other PbP campaigns, due to lack of interest, I can completely understand if you want to put this one on hold. I'm just being curious at this point, I'm not trying to foment dissent.

So as of now, I've had one person tell me that they are leaving the campaign via PM, and no responses, in game, from anyone on anything, other than Akkramar. I'm guessing that everyone is tired of playing this game and has moved on. I take some of the responsibility; I realize that the holidays and my RL stuff got in the way and I could have handled it better. That being said, if anyone has any complaints, gripes, or compliments, please send me a PM.

As of now the campaign is done. See you guys down the road.
