Thank you for your input, but I was trying to go a step forward from creating challenging npcs. I can create 100 different warbands with different feats and combos, but was really looking for ways to make memerable encounters that rely on more than that. Perhaps something like riding a horse on a bridge of ships like in the 300 sequel if you've seen it, or something of the likes...

I'm currently running a "song of ice and fire" campaign using E6 pathfinder rules. So far everything is going really well (it's only been a few sessions), but I've been thinking ahead looking for ideas on how to make combat encounters more special and unique, without resorting to what would otherwise be bread-and-butter in a pathfinder game, mainly magic.

One of my ideas was maybe having the PC's lured into a forest (chasing one of the bad guys or whatever), and then have the forest set on fire by said bad guys, thus having a combat encounter in a burning wood with trees exploding and firing splinters all around. But I would want to have some sort of advantage for the enemies while fighting in the fire, otherwise it would be kind of lame for them to die all the same.

So, what say you oh magnificant keepers of the lore? How would you make otherwise mundane combat encounters more fantastic? What crazy ideas do you have for unforgetable encounters that don't rely on magic?

Since we are all veteran players, playing together for almost ten years, and three of us having experiance as DMs also, we don't have trust issues, so I can count on the group to keep track of most of their kingdom building by themselves. Also, worst comes to worst, I can always downplay that aspect of the AP and instead focus on exploring etc.

My group and I are having trouble finding stability in a game (a collective short attention span is to blame). Also, we have little time and very dynamic lifestyles, usually making it hard for someone to commit to the role of DM. Three of us change seats alot, DMing alternately.
So, I was thinking, since none of us seems to have much time to prepare full fledged campaigns, maybe an adventure path could do most of the work for us and allow us to "maximise" our "play potential".
Looking over Kingmaker I thought it would be ideal since it's sandbox style-of-play could allow us to keep moving, even if we can't play as much as we would wan't.
But looking over the adventure path (I've reread it, reading it a while back), I'm not sure it'll be thematically fullfilling, and I would really like to do something more unique with it. We've been ithching for a pirate campaign (none of us 3 potential DMs felt we'd like to run Skulls and Shackles), and I figured I could substitute the areas for exploring islands and the such, and I also thought of making the whole thing kind of western-y (a more conquering of the wild west aspect, with Indians and guns and maybe setting up railways).
Has something like this been tried by anyone? Any advise people who have run the whole adventure path can give? Or even other cool ideas (either regarding my offers, or new) would be appreciated.

Male, 22. Been playing for the last ten years, 3.0, 3.5 and then pathfinder. Served 3 years in the army.

2 people marked this as a favorite.

Some Fantasy sources explain this with dragons having lighter than air gas pockets somewhere in thier body. sort of like float tanks in submarines.

I must be missing something, but why would a character wan't to pretend to be another class, especially when the "class" is just a mechanic, and should have no importance to the character itself?

would be happy to join as player.
would another rogue/fighter be o.k. or would you rather I play something else. I could find a nice build/story for any class.

Is it too late to post characters?
I've been thinking of a swashbuckler rogue, someone of noble descent, who's family got wiped out in the war, now trying to make it high enough in the social ladder to once again achieve prominence and maybe extract revenge. I'm kinda new to the whole thing, but hope you'd be willing to give me a chance.
