Just because Conan is a famous barbarian doesn't mean all barbarians have to be like him, think back to Rome and the Goth barbarians, the Goths would have been very much like the pf barbarian and were regularly called barbarians by the culture they fought against. Same goes for the Huns and most residents of Gaul at the time, the Berbers of northern Africa and most of the Celt and Pict residents of Great Britan.

The early greeks regarded anyone who was not greek as a barbarian, the word originated from people with no Greek or poorly pronounced words, but this was not accepted by many of the scolars and thinkers of the greeks and has a single mention in the illiad describing a band of Carians fighting on the side of Troy.

Similar words are used throughout Asia and in China especially, Europeans have been using the word for years to describe Vikings, local tribes in the tropics, Africa and the Americas as well as the Irish being described in such a way as well as the Italian usage for many years describing anyone who was not Italian.

Now with that in mind the image that is evoked in my mind when we say barbarian are of the Goths, a huge well equipped army of strong but dirty warriors, they seem unorganised to a "civilised" viewer but their command structure and leadership are sound. Bear in mind to the Romans who were clean and washed and had due process etc the Goths would be the epitome of the word but to the Goths they were just fighters who had slightly different looking equipment.

Flying into a rage definately evokes a feeling of the berserker but even then would a berserkers rage be as controlled as a barbarians? For me the mechanic is tied to the name as it is the name i have been gaming with for many years, the frenzied berserker prestige class from 3.5 represents unbridled and uncontrolled destructive power.

I think many of the archtypes the barbarian provides are better suited to being called a barbarian by local civilisations than berserkers, invulnerable rager, mounted fury, superstitious, drunken brute, savage, totem warrior, armoured hulk, sea reaver. I think the Taldans and Chileaxians in Galarion and similar nations in other settings would refer to people like this by the term barbarian, within their own tribe they would probably be called warriors or something similar since they are the uncivilised version of a fighter.

In the end your talking about abstract class titles, fighter, barbarian, paladin and comparing it to what should be an in character name, Swordlord, Berserker, Templar... Call them what you want at home but leave the well established and widely used class names alone.
I'll bite, why does it need to be changed after so many years and editions of being barbarian?

All of Adamantine Dragon's advice is really good too! Laptops are amazing tools for a GM (and double as GM screens). You can even tape D&D art to the top of them if you want, for that oldschool GM screen effect. :3

Since laptops were mentioned, I thought I'd share some fun D&D tools I use from time to time.

Gozzy's Random Map Generators produce some pretty nice maps for those like myself who suck at making maps.

Pathfinder Random Magic Item Generator. This tool is amazingly awesome. It can be used to generate magic items randomly for usage as treasure (by setting values), but the thing I really like about it is that you can quickly generate all the "extra" magic items that are available in a community. For example, a thorpe has a 50 gp economy so finding low level scrolls and potions in one is easy, but they also have 1d4 minor magic items separate from that. This generator skips the random tables and provides those magic items on demand. What is extra cool is you can modify what types of items it generates, include items from the Advanced Player's Guide, or make magic items intelligent (and it'll generate a new Intelligent magic item complete with ability scores, ego, alignment, special powers, etc).

Donjon's Tools has a lot of great RPG tools. The Random dungeon generator is awesome if you need a dungeon quickly that you can run or modify at your leisure. It's 3.5 (so mostly PF compatible) and randomly generates monsters, doors, traps, secret passages, and more. Comes with maps for PCs (no notes) and maps for GMs (with notes) and the GM can download the randomly generated dungeons as a pdf (first page is map, everything else is rooms, treasures, etc). Can be fun if you and your group wants to run a GM-less game to kill time. Also has a good Initiative tracker, and a really cool Random (Everything) Generator that produces NPC cast members, coats of arms, castles/keeps, towns & cities, worlds & planes, quests, omens, prophecies, portal destinations, pickpocket loot (!!! awesome right? !!!), magic items, psionic items, and tomes.

Lots of other great generators there too, like the weather generator. Want to know what the weather is like without being arbitrary? Be surprised yourself. Druids and archers won't be complaining so much that way either, since it's not like you're pulling the strings on their abilities. :3

Lochmonster's comments:
DMing advice

Danny Kesler wrote:This is some of the best advice on DMing I have ever read in 10 years of playing D&D. I don't understand— they used the same exact Sony S to crack into an abandoned Soviet base in the arctic—maybe American arctic bases are colder.

Anyway, don't buy a Sony S if you want to outdoors COSPLAY ResEvil in Central Alaska in the winter.

The illusion itself is placed in front of the mouth of the person in question. The heat sensation on the face, with the smell of burning flesh under their nose would cause one to think their face is melting. If they started to talk the illusion would add sounds of mumbling to complicate what is being said. Since the caster has to concentrate on the illusion they can adapt it for whatever situation arises.

The problem with Illusions is the same as the Paladin's Code. It is interpreted differently by different people. As mentioned it is best to figure out how your DM views illusions and what in their eyes make it believable.

While I love the imagery behind that illusion, I'm not sure its a workable solution. For you to counteract him speaking, you would need to produce the mumbling sounds at the moment he spoke.. too soon and he's on to you, too late, same thing. You wouldn't be able to listen for him to speak because by the time you hear it, he's already spoke.

He will also get a save, and could spoil the image right there.

There's also the clause in figment magic that "Figments cannot make something seem to be something else". I've always interpreted that clause in a manner similar to: You cant make a sword look like a moving snake. I could see that being the case here too as you are making a mouth look like not a mouth. Although if you get too strict with that statement, then figments are basically broken because 'air' can certainly be defined as 'something'.

A good way around that may be: instead of creating the mouth illusion on a person. Make the whole person an illusion. That would certainly get the attention of the other witnesses without the hassle of illusion potentially backfiring on you.
Duskrunner1 wrote:8 Red Wizards, I disagree.
