The jungles of Garund call out to adventurers and profiteers of every caliber. Its secrets are as plentiful as its dangers, from the mundane worries of disease and heat to the threat of fierce ape-men and beasts of legend, and only a handful make it out alive to tell their tale.
Welcome to the Mwangi Expanse!

Some of you may remember this little fan project called Wayfinder (if you aren't, go get yourself acquainted). It is now time for the fourth issue of Wayfinder Once again I will be lead cat herder for this project, and here are the rules and guidelines for submitting to the fanzine.
Goal
The goal for the fanzine is to create a collection of fan-created articles and supporting art set in Paizo’s Pathfinder Chronicles world of Golarion.
Types of Submissions
Regular Columns

  • Sidetreks: Set in a particular region of Golarion, Sidetreks will feature short outlines for a sidetrek adventure. Please reference Wayfinder #2 & 3 for the layout for this article. For Wayfinder #4, these regions are the Mwangi Expanse, Sargava, the Shackles and the Sodden Lands. One sidetrek outline per submission for this column. Submission size: 325 words.
  • Tales from the Front: Fiction articles based on any of Paizo’s adventure modules or paths.
  • Taste of Golarion: We're continuing collections for The Golarion Cookbook! One recipe per submission for this column.
  • Weal or Woe? Two NPCs (including statblocks), one helpful, one not so much. Include hooks for the PCs to know (or hate) this NPC and how to use them in a campaign. New! Include a boon and drawback for the NPCs in your article (see Pathfinder Chronicles: NPC Guide for example boons).

In addition to our regular columns, Wayfinder #4 will be focusing on the Mwangi Expanse and the surrounding regions of Sargava, the Shackles and the Sodden Lands. Please use Pathfinder Chronicles: Heart of the Jungle as your main reference! In the case of a plethora of articles on similar subjects, preference will be given to articles that follow this theme. As always, crunch, fiction and flavor articles are welcome!
Guidelines

  • Thou shalt not disregard canon, thou shalt build upon it.
  • Keep in mind thy audience. No slash fic/porn fantasies, cheesecake/beefcake/fan service - keep it PG-13.
  • Short and sweet. Unless otherwise specified, article sizes are 750 and 1500 words. Anything over 1500 words will have to be pre-approved by me.
  • Submissions used to defame, harass or threaten board members are not tolerated.

Submission Instructions

  • Conditions for Submissions. All authors and artists must agree to have their works reproduced for other Wayfinder products, be it for translations into other languages, special publications, or use on a Wayfinder website. (We will be responsible for the truthfulness of the translations). All of Wayfinder’s publications are NON-PROFIT, and authors and artists will be given proper credit where due.
  • Send all submissions to me via email with the subject line "Wayfinder #4". My email is listed in my profile.
  • All text submissions submitted in .doc format (doesn't matter if you use Office or OpenOffice). Do not use fancy fonts or colors - these will get stripped out in the editing and layout process. Use the standard body font for the program you're using - bold and italics are fine.
  • All images and art must be in JPG or PNG format, 300 dpi resolution preferred. If you do not send it in a high enough resolution, it will be resized appropriately.
  • Include your name and board name in your submission - example, "Liz 'Lilith' Courts". Your entries will go through editing passes for clarity and concision. Depending on time constraints, you may or may not receive feedback on the editing process and your script.
  • DEADLINE: October 1st. All entries will be handled on a first come, first serve basis. Some articles may be rejected depending on the final size of the PDF.

Advertising

  • Fan projects operating under Paizo’s Community Use Policy are welcome to advertise their websites and materials in Wayfinder #4.
  • Third party publishers wishing to advertise their Pathfinder Roleplaying Game-compatible projects in Wayfinder #4 are welcome to advertise as well. Space is available for 1/4, 1/2 and full page ads.
  • Email me for questions about pricing. Email is in my profile - be sure to include "Wayfinder #4 Advertising" in your subject line.
  • DEADLINE: October 31st.

A PDF copy will be available for free here at Paizo.com, with print-on-demand through Lulu at some point in the future.

I’m looking forward to everybody’s entries. Now every run through the jungle!

After flipping through 40+ modules at GenCon last week trying to find the right module and levels, might we include the scenario number, tier and sub-tiers on the front page of the module?

I'd like to make a recommendation to include the scenario number, tier and sub-tiers on the first page of the module (the pretty front page). After going through a stack of 40+ modules, I figured it would be nice to have a quick way to reference them just by looking at the front cover.

Y'all brought me to tears when you announced that a portion of the proceeds from the pint glass sales were going to Wayfinder. *sniffles a bit at the memory, offers cookies*

GMs get an awesome GM Screen, what about something similar for PCs?

Beyond a pocket for character sheets, what kind of tables do y'all think should be on it? My suggestions:

  • Character Advancement and Level-Dependent Bonuses
  • Skills: their ability modifiers, untrained/trained, take 10/20, retry
  • Standard weapons and armor. The full equipment list might be a bit much, but quick notes on masterwork item pricing and alchemical items/skill kits.
  • Carrying capacity
  • Movement and travel speeds
  • Actions in Combat
  • Armor Class modifiers
  • Concentration check DCs

Other nifty idea...A dry erase or erasable section (like the back of the item cards) with the following info:

  • Current/Max HP
  • Saving throws
  • Condition Tracking (you know, panicked, blinded, stunned, along with their effects).
  • Buff/debuff note section
  • Money

Reminder: This is a hypothetical Pathfinder RPG product, so no overly Golarion-specific stuff...

Thoughts? Comments?

Article here.

Post a link to your favorite pic(s) by this incredible artist. Even if you don't know him, you likely know his work, or the work of the innumerable artists he's inspired.

My favorites? Death Dealer (of course, and not just because my mom did a repaint of it that hung right next to the wall maps of the grey box Forgotten Realms maps), Conan, Egyptian Queen, and the one that I'm going to paint as a bathroom mural someday, Sea Witch.

Now that Wave has been out for more than a month, I'd like to get a collection of utilities that are useful for other GMs venturing into using Wave (and assorted Google utilities) for game sessions.

Dice Rollers

  • RandomLeeTwenty:
Not a bad dice roller, not terribly customizable.
  • Dice-y: I like this one a lot better, seeing as it will string together multiple dice types (i.e., 1d6+4d8-3). Integrates into the originating wave.

Maps
MapLib.net & Fighty: Haven't had a chance to dig my fingers into it yet, so I don't quite have a review for it yet. Integrates a Google-maps like interface (with clickable buttons, etc) with a custom image.

Anybody else have anything they'd like to share?

Welcome to the shining jewel of the Inner Sea, the City at the Center of the World, the Greatest City, raised from the depths by the Last Azlant and created by his hand!
Welcome to Absalom!

Some of you may remember this little fan project called Wayfinder (if you aren't, go get yourself acquainted). It is now time for Part 3 - PaizoCon III Print Edition! Once again I will be lead cat herder for this project, and here are the rules and guidelines for submitting to the fanzine.
Goal
The goal for the fanzine is to create a collection of fan-created articles and supporting art set in Paizo’s Pathfinder Chronicles world of Golarion.
Types of Submissions
In Wayfinder #2, we started a few regular columns, which we are continuing in Wayfinder #3:

  • Sidetreks: Set in a particular region of Golarion, Sidetreks will feature short outlines for a sidetrek adventure. Please reference Wayfinder #2 for the layout for this article. For Wayfinder #3, these regions are Absalom, the Isle of Kortos, and the Inner Sea.

In addition to our regular columns, Wayfinder #3 will be focusing on the Isle of Kortos and its most famous settlement, Absalom. Please use Pathfinder Chronicles: Guide to Absalom as your main reference!

Unless otherwise specified, max article sizes are 750 and 1500 words. Anything over 1500 words will have to be pre-approved by me.

  • Send all submissions to me via email with the subject line "Wayfinder #3". My email is listed in my profile.
  • All text submissions submitted in .doc format (doesn't matter if you use Office or OpenOffice). Do not use fancy fonts or colors - these will get stripped out in the editing and layout process. Use the standard body font for the program you're using - bold and italics are fine.
  • All image/art in JPG or PNG, 300 dpi resolution preferred.
  • DEADLINE: March 17th. All entries will be handled on a first come, first serve basis. Since this is a print edition, there will be a hard cap on the size of the final publication, and some articles may be rejected.

Advertising

  • Fan projects operating under Paizo’s Community Use Policy are welcome to advertise their websites and materials in Wayfinder #3 for a small fee.
  • Third party publishers wishing to advertise their Pathfinder Roleplaying Game-compatible projects in Wayfinder #3 are welcome to advertise as well. Space is available for 1/4, 1/2 and full page ads.
  • Email me for questions about pricing. Email is in my profile - be sure to include "Wayfinder #3 Advertising" in your subject line.
  • DEADLINE: Until we have all funds needed for printing!

Print editions of Wayfinder #3 will be available to all badge-wearing attendees of PaizoCon III (limit one per person) and contributors. People who donate will receive a free copy (there may be an additional shipping charge). A PDF copy will be available for free here at Paizo.com, with print-on-demand through Lulu at some point in the future.

I’m looking forward to everybody’s entries. Now get crackin’!

Hey y'all! I recently got a job in the Portland area, and will be moving there in the next couple of months. I am interested in:

  • Pathfinder (of course) - Prefer to run, have all the APs, modules, Chronicles and Companions. Not adverse to sandbox campaigns either. Willing to run PFS games too.
  • RIFTS - Prefer to play. Husband is dying to play in a RIFTS game again.
  • GURPS/Spycraft/FantasyCraft - Love the systems, would like to play.

Also, finding a good FLGS is also important. I know of Bridgetown Hobbies and Rainy Day Games - any other place where gamers gather together?

Welcome! Some of you may remember this little fan project called Wayfinder. It is now time for the sequel.

Starting with Wayfinder #2, we will have the following regular columns:

  • Sidetreks Set in a particular region of Golarion, Sidetreks will feature short outlines for a sidetrek adventure. For this column, the setup will be “plot hook + a little backstory + potential resolutions.” For Wayfinder #2, these regions are Crown of the World, Irrisen, or Land of the Linnorm Kings. One sidetrek outline per submission for this column.
  • Tales from the Front Fiction articles based on any of Paizo’s adventure modules or paths.
  • Taste of Golarion That’s right, time to start collecting for The Golarion Cookbook! One recipe per submission for this column.
  • Weal or Woe? Two NPCs (including statblocks), one helpful, one not so much. Include hooks for the PCs to know (or hate) this NPC and how to use them in a campaign.

In addition to our regular columns, Wayfinder #2 will be holiday-themed for release at the end of the year. As before, I will be looking to fill the rest of Wayfinder with crunchy articles for players and GMs, as well as fiction, poetry and art. Stuck on Golarion holidays? Check out page 239 of the Pathfinder Chronicles Campaign Setting for the months of Lamashan, Neth and Kuthona.

Guidelines

  • Thou shalt not disregard canon, thou shalt build upon it.
  • Keep in mind thy audience. No slash fic/porn fantasies, cheesecake/beefcake/fan service - keep it PG-13.
  • Short and sweet. No article over 1500 words. For art pieces, 8 1/2 inches by 5 1/2 inches max.

  • Send all submissions to me via email with the subject line "Wayfinder #2". My email is listed in my profile.
  • All text submissions submitted in .doc format (doesn't matter if you use Office or OpenOffice).
  • All image/art in JPG or PNG, 300 dpi resolution preferred. If you do not send it in a high enough resolution, it will be resized appropriately.
  • Include your name and board name in your submission - example, "Liz 'Lilith' Courts".
  • Your entries will go through an editing pass for clarity and concision. Depending on time constraints, you may or may not receive feedback on the editing process and your script.
  • DEADLINE: October 31st. All entries will be handled on a first come, first serve basis. Unlike the first Wayfinder, there will be a set limit on the number of articles, and your article may be rejected. I will announce when submissions are closed for Wayfinder #2, however, keep those submissions handy. Something…else…will be afoot. ;)

Advertising

  • Fan projects operating under Paizo’s Community Use Policy are welcome to advertise their websites and materials in Wayfinder #2. There will be no charge for the advertising.
  • Third party publishers wishing to advertise their Pathfinder Roleplaying Game-compatible projects in Wayfinder #2 are welcome to advertise as well. There is limited space for third party publishers, so space is available on a first come, first serve basis. As we do not need to raise funds to cover printing costs, this advertising space is provided free of charge.
  • DEADLINE: October 31st.

Wayfinder #2 will be PDF only, available here at Paizo.com, with print-on-demand through Lulu at some point in the future.

I’m looking forward to everybody’s entries. Now get crackin’!

Some of you long-time board members might remember a thread that brainstormed a concept - a place where DMs with little time on their hands could go and pick up a statblock for use in their game. Well, that idea snowballed into something much bigger, and I'm happy to say, after languishing in cobwebby code purgatory, DM Tools is back and better than ever.

For your perusal, here are some of the options:
1.) Over 1300 stat blocks, ranging from a CR of 1/10 to over 40. Sort by Campaign, Class, CR, Contributor, Race and Sourcebook.
2.) GENERATORS! Encounters both benign and not, Books, Demiplanes, Mercenary Jobs, Treasure, Scrolls, Spellbooks - it's here!
3.) Indices - Super-duper handy lists of classes, feats, monsters, spells (and psi powers), and "stuff" - a catch all of alchemical items, ammo, wondrous items (sorted by slot too), artifacts, cursed items, weapons, relics, rings, rods, staves, special materials - it's here.
4.) Dice Roller - need one Invisible Castle style? There's one available!

Now what does this mean for you? When you register on the site, you have the option of selecting which books you have access to, and the site will adjust its listings and generators appropriately.

This site is for D&D 3.5, and as of the time of this writing, has all non-psi, non-epic SRD material from d20srd.org, the Rise of the Runelords AP, the Pathfinder Campaign Setting & Gazetteer are included on the site (including non-OGL material from the Player's Handbook, Monster Manual and Dungeon Master's Guide). A separate site is in the works for PFRPG material.

Rewards! There is a reward system in place, based on stat blocks submitted, but I haven't quite worked out what those rewards are yet...Need more time to think about that while I work some other code kinks out.

Go forth and enjoy the DM Tools website! If you have any questions, I'll be keeping an eye on this thread.

Edit: Before I forget...those of you that registered on the old site, please re-register and let me know which stat blocks belong to you. A server hiccup on my hoster's side lost that information, but fortunately not the stat blocks.

Last year I did a Rune Giant mini for a prize drawing, but this year, I'm coming up with a blank on what to create. Time runs short, so I'm going to need some ideas pretty darn quick. Here are some quick guidelines:

1.) The creature's space is no bigger than 20 ft. (Sadly, this leaves the Tarrasque out.)
2.) Pathfinder-oriented.
3.) Not something that you can get out of the currently available mini selection.

The sepid div was mentioned, but I have done the big-guy-with-sword already...

Help me Paizonians, you're my only hope!

Try 7-zip for unzipping this file (haven't tried it myself yet, but it is a good alternative to WinZip).

...to submit to the PaizoCon fanzine. Read all the details about it here, but the quick summary is:

  • 1500 words.
  • Art, fiction, crunch, all accepted - you will be edited for style, grammar and clarity.
  • April 15th due date.

If you have any questions, post them in the other thread. :D

As some of you may know, one of the goals for this year's PaizoCon is to put together a fanzine (much like Oerth Journal, if you're familiar with that). Since I volunteered to organize and cat herd for this project, as well as get it edited and have some art to go with it, here are the rules and guidelines for submitting an item to the fanzine.

Goal
My goal for the fanzine is to create a collection of stories as if written by members of the Pathfinder Society as they travel through Golarion (or perhaps beyond). If you're writing a fiction/flavor piece, write it as if you are a member of the Society. If you're writing a crunchy article, include snippets of eyewitness observations. Art - field sketches of what your protagonist has seen. Hopefully you get the idea.

Types of Submissions
The types of things I want to see are: short fiction/journal entries, poems/filks, crunch articles (exotic poisons of the Mwangi, traits, elite Korvosan guard stats, more magical foodstuffs, etc). Art can be whatever you'd like to submit, though if an artist and and author want to team up, go for it. :D

Submission Instructions

  • Send all submissions to me via email with the subject line "PaizoCon 09 Fanzine".
Black & White/Grayscale only.
  • Include your name and board name in your submission - example, "Liz 'Lilith' Courts".
  • Your entries will go through an editing pass for clarity and concision. I'm in the process of wrangling editors. Depending on time constraints, you may or may not receive feedback on the editing process and your script.
  • DEADLINE: April 15th. All entries will be handled on a first come, first serve basis. No exceptions. I reserve the right to close entries should I get inundated, though I may be handing out art assignments if I don't get enough.

There you have it folks. I look forward to the entries. :)

Oh noes! My copy of PF 18 that I received today have the pages out of order. Just looks like one signature worth (33 to 48). Can I pretty please get a replacement?

Thorax Cake. YUMMY.

For fans of Gary Larson's unforgettable comic strip, here's a Flickr group with photography reenactments and photo manipulations. Too cool not to share. :D

Nautical-themed item cards has been brought up, but how about Arabic (Katapesh/Qadira), Indian (Vudran), Tien (Chinese/Japanese), or stranger non-humanoid decks?

It seems more than a few of us remember the star of this bizarre free adventure from WotC in the early days of 3.0 . Share your stories of the cheese-filled monstrosity!

My co-worker shared this Flick photo set with me - definitely worth a giggle!

The Inevitable Stormies

Since I'm new to the whole organized play thing, and the chance is there are others who will be also, I'm starting this thread so people can give out advice. Please preface your posts with "For Players" or "For GMs".

Post away! :D

Event Announcement!
What: Pathfinder Society!
Where: The unofficial chatroom!
When: July 30th, 2008, 6pm Pacific (9pm for you East coast folks, 2am for Greenwich Mean Time)
Who: Josh Frost, Nick Logue

This will be a MODERATED chat, in that questions will be directed to one person (me), and forwarded on to the Main room to be answered. So, for one day, the chatroom will have its Chaotic subtype repressed.

Much like the "discuss this product" threads exist, can we get something like that for the blogs? That could be handy. :D

Normally I don't do these sorts of petition deals, but this is one that I'd like to see other people chime in for. Related to this thread, I would like to request that the 8th of Nova is made into an official Golarion holiday, perhaps celebrating the formation of the Pathfinder Society in Absalom.

Why the 8th of Nova? Well, as some of us posters remember, the 8th of November was declared Erik Mona Day. Many of us donned Erik's cyclopean avatar in celebration, and pizza was sent to the offices for consumption and a thank you for being such an awesome company.

So, pretty please with cookies on top, can we make 8th of Nova an official holiday in Golarion? :D

WIN! Here's the scoop from Gaming Report:

Q-workshop announces cooperation with Paizo Publishing LLC - as result of the agreement, Q-workshop will release a line of licensed dice sets for use with Paizo’s Pathfinder product line. Coming out this August – Pathfinder: Rise of the Runelords Dice, first in a series of dice products specially tailored for use with Pathfinder adventure paths and upcoming Pathfinder RPG.

Nicely done guys!

What are your three favorite countries from the Gazetteer that you want to see more of, and why do you like them?

Jalmeray: Out of all the nations in the Gazetteer, this is the one that gave me the goosebumps. I could so clearly see the Vudran ships sailing in, and smell the sea air. Nicely done.
Numeria: I like some science in my fantasy, and this is a place where I can have it! As a bonus, it's the kind of place I could see my favorite Cimmerian hangin' around in. This place just screams sword n' sorcery pulpy goodness.
The Worldwound: The demons are here, they're tearing a hole in reality that's getting bigger, and they're barely being kept in check by an aging army of crusaders. Whaddya gonna do, "hero"?

Anybody else?

I received my monthly Paizo drugs - er, subscription items, but instead of being shipping to my selected address, it instead went to my billing address. While I did receive my order (so there's no need to resend), I just wanted to point this out, as well as theorize some potential causes for it:

1.) Shipping address was changed mid-"sidecart" - I requested a change while my sidecart items were waiting for PF #8.
2.) New subscription shipping address did not take. *sniffle*
3.) Goblins switched labels.

This is for those who have the map permanently bound in the book. Oh noes!

Tools required: X-acto knife (or similarly sharp and precise cutting utensil), piece of cardboard, pencil.

1.) Fold out the map (as much as you can). This should leave the short side still attached to the book.
2.) Using the straight edge of the cardboard and a pencil, draw a cutting guideline.
3.) Place cardboard underneath the map and directly against the spine of the book. This should elevate the map enough so that it does not touch the last page of the book.
4.) With the knife, carefully follow your guideline to remove the map from the book. Slower is better - it makes a cleaner cut!

Fortunately, the edge that is bound to the book does not have any important text close to its edges. Hope this helps somebody out!

Gaedren felt his fist slam into the cheekbone of his Lamb, and he curled back his lips in amusement. The boy slid across the floor and the rest of the Lambs skittered away like roaches in lantern light. The boy's prize, which he had dared to show to Gaedren, flew up into the air. Stiff cards with gorgeous multicolored figures and gilt edges spread across the room, and Gaedren stalked towards the fallen figure.

"A deck of cards? This is what I get for your night's work? You'll not eat for a week, how'm'I supposed to provide for you with this trash?" Gaedren yelled as he picked up the boy by the tattered shirt he wore.

"S'worth at least a gold," the boy muttered as blood dribbled down his face and onto Gaedren's fist.

"Shut yer yap! You goin' into business for yourself?" Gaedren watched as the boy quickly shut his mouth, biting back a retort. Gaedren raised his fist to strike again, but a sudden cruel idea crossed his mind. The boy had Varisian blood, that's true...the dark hair and eyes, skinny (lets him do his job better, Gaedren thought), but maybe he could turn this foul up to his advantage.

"Get the cards boy. You steal it, you gotta do a readin' now. Ain't that what yer mother did? Oh that's right, you don't know do ya?" Gaedren taunted. The boy visibly flinched, and he bent to pick up the scattered cards on the ground, and with as much poise as his small body could muster, he started sorting the cards.

"Ask your question," said the boy.

Gaedren rolled his eyes. He never had much patience for fortune tellers - he knew a scam when he saw it, and the rubes who swore up and down that their Harrowings came true were just one more easy mark. "What trouble did you bring me, boy?"

The boy selected the second pile of cards, then spread them out in a fan in front of him. "Pick one, and I'll pick four."

Gaedren's eyes narrowed as he drew a card. "Why four?"

The boy look confused. "That's what they do, the Harrowers."

Gaedren grunted, and looked at the card he drew. A red-eyed rabbit with a crown on his head and a rapier at his side looked back at him, and he snorted in derision. He flicked the card at the boy, and saw the array of cards the boy had drawn. A colorful dancer dressed in Varisian garb, a depiction of an avalanche, a cowled figure with a thieves' hand of keys, and a cricket in fashionable garb. "Devilfish dung," Gaedren muttered. The boy gathered up the revealed cards and shuffled them back into the deck, flipping and cutting the deck as well as any card shark in a dockside tavern.

The boy laid out nine cards in that way Gaedren had seen before, revealing the column on the left side first. Gaedren's eyes were drawn to the brightly colored winged serpent. "Good things came to you in the past when you chose the right moment to strike," the boy said, his voice cracking on the last syllable. Gaedren blinked twice - the fangs of the winged serpent seemed to glint like a dagger in the moonlight, and the hairs on the back of his neck stood up. The boy revealed the second column of cards, and the well-dressed cricket seemed to wink at him from the top of the middle column.

"A speedy travel, with a reward at the end," the boy continued to say, this time without cracking. Gaedren's flesh began to crawl, as he recalled that the tunnels he had cleared from beneath his safehouse did indeed make the trip much faster, and the fine meal laid out for him would be waiting there. Gaedren felt that bitter metallic taste in the back of his mouth, that taste of fear, rise up as he watched his Lamb flip over the last column of cards.

"Your determination will be tested when the Mute Hag speaks her secrets," the boy intoned. Gaedren Lamm looked at the cards the boy had indicated, and the eyeless gaze of the Hag bored into him. He stood up from where he had been squatting on the floor.

"Get yer cards together boy, and go earn yer keep," Gaedren said quietly. He turned to where the other Lambs had secreted themselves. "And that goes for the lot of ya!" he bellowed, and he heard the sound of blankets being thrown aside and the sound of bare feet on the floor.

Gaedren looked around the now-empty room, and looked at his pet, whose cold reptilian eyes gazed back at him. Gaedren noticed a piece of colorful fabric caught between the wickedly sharp fangs, and shuddered unwillingly as he thought of the fangs of the winged serpent.

Everything except one thread in Gamer Connections is gone - where did it go? Oh noes!

I will be running a Curse of the Crimson Throne PbP here on the Paizo boards. Here is the following criteria and pertinent information.

Sourcebooks

  • Rise of the Runelords AP, Curse of the Crimson Throne AP, both Player's Guides
  • The System Reference Document and Open Game Content from Unearthed Arcana, as presented on d20srd.org

Classes & Races
Any class or standard PC race from the source material above (this includes psionics). Non-standard races will need prior approval. The variant character classes, specialist wizard variants and class feature variants are available.

Non-standard Rules
The following optional rules from Unearthed Arcana will be used.

If crafting becomes part of the game, the Craft Points system will be used.

Characters
Reputation and Contacts will be a part of the game. Using Character Backgrounds is also encouraged.

  • Ability scores will be determined by rolling 4d6, rerolling ones, and drop the lowest die. Assign scores where you like.
  • Choose two traits.
  • Edit: Max starting gold, unless you opt to use Character Backgrounds, in which case it's half of maximum.

Mechanic Stuffs
Please use DM Tools or Invisible Castle for dice rolls. I will also allow rolls done in the chatroom.

Combat will be handled in the chatroom. Thanks for this recommend, Takasi!

Death, Dying and Nonlethal Damage

  • A character becomes unconscious when their nonlethal damage exceeds double their Constitution score and fails a Fortitude save equal to DC 10 + Con score. (Ex. A character with a Con of 8 is knocked out with 16 points of nonlethal damage.)
  • A character is dead when their negative hit points reach their negative Constitution score. (Ex. A character with a Con of 8 is dead at -8 hp. A character with a Con of 20 is dead at -20 hp.)

Party
Choose the character that you want to play - this is your character, not mine. I'll have plenty to run. As there is currently a lot of people who would like to play, the final group will consist of FOUR characters, with TWO alternates. Final group will be determined by a roll-off.

If you are interested, please post your interest here in this thread, along with a link to your character. I will accept entries until I receive my physical copy of the first part of Curse of the Crimson Throne, at which time I will roll for the final party.

So, I need at least six people willing to work with my campaign setup. The following people have expressed interest: NSpicer, Mothman, Kruelaid, ManPig, Alex Martin, Stunty_the_Dwarf, TerraNova, Quandary, Eric Zylstra, Oliver von Spreckelsen, Sean Minister of KtSP, and Tarren Dei.

EDIT: Sorry, forgot to add a couple of things! My bad!

Name your favorite piece of gaming memorabilia - what's most personally valuable to you?

Me:
1.) The Glossography (Greyhawk). Found it for stupid cheap (used) at a game store.
2.) Keep on the Borderlands. Again, found used at a game store for cheap. Got it signed by Gygax at GenCon '07.
3.) Dungeon #70. It's missing its cover, but dammit, I still love it for one adventure: Kingdom of the Ghouls.
4.) My first set of polyhedral dice.

Whatchoo got?

Okay, this thought has crossed my mind before, but now's the time to put it in action.

The Challenge
Create three archetypes: Melee, Ranged, Caster.
Choose from one of the following CRs for your statblock (once you use it, you can't use it again): 5, 10, 15, 20.

Source Material
Only SRD/Open Game Content from d20srd.org. This includes psionic material and variant character classes.

Limitations

  • Standard PC Races OR a non-standard race with a level adjustment.
  • No cohorts, familiars, animal companions, or minions.*
  • Ability Scores: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8 - place how you want.
  • Average HP + Constitution modifier each level.
  • Absolutely positively no equipment. None. Zip. Zero. Zilch. Some may ask how you can create a Ranged archetype with no equipment - time to get creative. ;)

Rules

  • The arena will be set up with two treasure areas containing a random assortment of equipment - if you survive to get to them, the equipment is yours. The arena map will be designed by me, and play will be handled through posts on these forums, in the Play-by-Post section. Dice rolls will be handled through Invisible Castle, the DM Tools dice roller, the chat room dice roller or on the honor system.
  • Please post your stat blocks at DM Tools.org and put "ARENA FIGHT" into the name of your stat block. Mark your stat blocks as Private - no scopin' out the competition! If you are unfamiliar with the stat block presentation, please read this DOC file here.
  • The Arena Master (that's me) will have SIX random powers that can be used in the arena fight. Those powers will be determined at the beginning of the arena fight. Four will have the potential to affect the competitors, two will affect the arena.
  • Each competitor will have THREE Luck Points which they can use to automatically succeed on a saving throw.
  • Fights will be one on one, it will be an elimination round by round to the final two competitors.
  • The Critical Hit Deck will be used. Because it's fun. :P
  • Ones are automatic failures, 20s are automatic successes. Natural 20s on attack rolls will be considered critical hits without need for a confirmation roll.
  • Death will be at negative your Constitution score, as opposed to -10 hp. There will be no death by massive damage.
  • Prior to the beginning of the bout, a player may choose to make three Gather Information rolls to determine abilities their opponent may have, before the player knows who their opponent is.

Exceptions, Clarifications, and Restrictions

  • *Creatures that can be summoned through a spell or spell-like ability are exceptions. Familiars require a GP cost to summon, and therefore not available.
  • Teleport, plane shift, dimension door, shadow walk, ethereal jaunt and similar spells, spell-like abilities and effects will not function. "Incoming" spells that summon creatures (or items) to you will work. Summoned creatures cannot summon additional creatures.
  • There is no additional XP available to cast spells that have an XP cost, or for using XP in any other way..
  • There will be no aerial or underwater combat - while you may take the fly spell, you will be disallowed from attacking while flying.
  • There will be psionic-magic transparency.

Please post in this thread if you wish to be a competitor, or if you just want to do this as an exercise. If you don't want to participate in the Arena Fight, remove "ARENA FIGHT" from your stat block's name on DM Tools.

A lot of us read in bed, so I'm curious to find out what books you have sitting next to you. This is slightly different from the "What books are you currently reading" as you may not be currently reading all of them.

Here's what I got:
Dictionary of Psychic Sciences
The Ultimate Cookbook
The Book of Artifacts
Lovecraft (I had to set it down for a few after "The Case of Charles Dexter Ward." O.o )
Learning Java
Adobe InDesign CS 2 user manual
A couple of PC Gamer and Games for Windows magazines

Whatchoo got? :P

Since I know there are a few guitar players here, I thought I'd share this.

Just a quick "huh" to let y'all know that in My Subscriptions, it's showing that Pathfinder #6 should ship sometime in January...but there's no mention of Pathfinder #5. I want Steve Greer's adventure goodness before I get into Greg Vaughan's Rise of the Runelords finale!

After perusing Unearthed Arcana for my Greyhawk campaign I'm going to start tomorrow, something struck me as I read through several sections. The section on recharging magic, spell points, weapon groups, action points (which can be used to activate limited per day class features) and other "rules variants" seem a lot like I'm hearing about.

Thoughts? Speculation? For reference, I'll point out the sections that got my brain working:

Action Points, p. 122
Spell Points, p. 153
Recharge Magic, p. 157
Players Roll All the Dice, p. 133 (This section got my attention in light of the poison damage dealio that came up.)

Conveniently, these variant rules are in the SRD, so I've linked them for y'all.

After three years, my Forgotten Realms campaign has finally drawn to a close, yet it hasn't. Three years is a lot of time invested in a character, and as such, I didn't want to say "sorry, you can't use these characters ever again" to my players. So, I came up with an idea to let me play in other campaign settings but have them "remember" previous abilities of their former characters. The husband is taking the events that happened in my campaign and starting a d20 Modern campaign in the Forgotten Realms, where the players play descendants of the original characters in my campaign.

I'm curious to know what others have done to extend the lifespan of the campaign they've ran, or what others have done with your campaign, or what particular pieces of previous campaigns show up in the next campaign.

The other thread got me thinkin' (oh noes!), so I'm taking a quick break from webwork, and gonna ask:

As a kid, what job did you want when you "grew up?" (No more than three - I know my job desires changed a few times when I was a child.)

1.) Comic Book Artist
2.) Veterinarian
3.) Horticulturist

Lisa Stevens, Paizo's CEO, will be dropping by the DM Tools chatroom for a chat, tonight 5pm PST (that's GMT -8 for our European friends). Got a burning question for Lisa, be sure to stop by! (Can't make it? Send your questions to me!)

See you there!

As of this month, I will have ran my Forgotten Realms campaign for four years. Now, this is not something I could have done by myself - far from it. Any key to a long-running campaign is interest and feedback from the players, so I'd like to give a shout out to my players:

Robert, aka captramses - Tebryn Illistyn, a sorta-drow elf rogue/incandescent champion
Jeannie - Sharra Marivalda, human sorcerer/dragon disciple/argent savant
Courtland - Thayghen Windsong, moon elf druid/speaker of the city
Shawn - Gabriel Thornneck, halfling rogue/shadowdancer (sorry your halfling became aboleth food :O )
Jimmy - Jandar Ulmokina, human monk/truenamer

They've shaped and molded the campaign, and this campaign would not have lasted for as long as it has without them.

*toasts a glass of mead to her players*

Anybody else have a campaign they'd like to mention? :D
