Lightbringer sheathes his sword, figuring that it would be difficult to swing through the water, and that he might need his free hand to steady himself. He makes his way carefully to the base of the stairs then through the water to the first junction in the corridor, crunching over the debris covering the floor.

Once he reaches one of the arched openings (or one on either side if that’s how the passage is arrayed) he pauses, peering within each opening first with his darkvision site, then slowly with his ability to detect evil.

Perception: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6. Will take a few rounds to detect evil in 60 foot cone within the opening (or both openings) then ahead down the passage.

If he doesn’t see or detect anything he repeats this procedure until he finds something of interest, the situation changes, or he reaches the end of the tether – in the later case he returns to report.

Seems so.

Lightbringer ties some rope around his midriff and strides into the water, moving slowly so as not to lose his footing.

Perception: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 1 = 14

“I believe there is a benefit to investigating this direction first,” Lightbringer states. “I suggest that Basher, Matilda – if the suit is watertight – and myself go and take a look, and assess whether the way forward is passable, and whether the humanoids will be able to hold their breath or are better off going in the tent. If we discover any threats that appear beyond our capabilities, we will retreat back to this location. If we take everyone with us in the tent, and we run into trouble in the water, there will be no easy way to retrieve them.”

Well he is a magic robot after all.
Yeah, I'm probably not at my most creative, I couldn't think of a good way to relay that information in-character.

Lightbringer backs up the watery stairway until his head is again above the surface. "I detect no evil," he says, "although my range is limited. I saw nothing. My kinetic sensors tell me that the water is very cold; perhaps discomfortingly so for you humanoids."

"Let me see ..."

Detect evil.

Lightbringer also wades into the water, taking careful steps to avoid sudden plunges, relying on his darkvision to see. Perception: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2 Darkvision 30 ft.

"Badger and I could explore ahead a way," suggests Lightbringer. "Or we could try the elevator that we found earlier."

Yup.

Lightbringer straps on the warforged mask from the previous chamber. A small black mound protrudes from his face under his eyes and over his mouth, with two nozzle-like assemblies pointing down and out from either side. He makes a sniffing sound.

“Odd,” he comments, his voice echoing strangely from behind the mask. “Onwards then.”

Cool, LB is wearing a gas mask, he has gone steampunk.

Having rolled aside from the oncoming darkness thanks to the grace of the Flame, Lightbringer lumbers about and brings his sword to bear, once again attacking the darkness.

Full attack, flanking, power attack, haste.
#1: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (7) + 16 = 23 Damage: 2d6 + 17 ⇒ (2, 6) + 17 = 25 Miss chance (high misses): 1d100 ⇒ 76
#2: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (14) + 16 = 30 Damage: 2d6 + 17 ⇒ (1, 5) + 17 = 23 Miss chance (high misses): 1d100 ⇒ 13
#3: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (17) + 11 = 28 Damage: 2d6 + 17 ⇒ (4, 2) + 17 = 23 Miss chance (high misses): 1d100 ⇒ 83

Two good points.

Taking the AoO and getting engulfed might be kind of heroic, but I'm not sure that doing so would be fantastic for LB's continued health. Try to dodge out of the way (with action point for the assist on a lowish roll ...

Reflex: 1d20 + 7 + 1d6 ⇒ (12) + 7 + (5) = 24

Can LB shove Rod out of the way? Ie, give him an 'aid another' bonus on his reflex save?

Runzyl's miss chance (high misses) 1d100

Oops.

I doubt you can crit it – which is a pity if so, some very nice rolls there.

That would have hurt.

“Can it be killed?” Lightbringer asks Ezreal, but he doesn’t wait to hear the answer, deciding to test for himself. He charges forward and attacks the darkness.

Charge straight ahead, power attack on darkness: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (15) + 16 = 31 Damage: 2d6 + 17 ⇒ (2, 1) + 17 = 20 Miss chance: 1d100 ⇒ 37 high is miss.

H21

This.

You set ‘em up, I’ll knock ‘em down ... or at least make them wobble slightly.

Ez casts magic missile at the darkness!

Init: 1d20 ⇒ 9. LB is still detecting evil at this point.

“I can detect no evil from that direction,” states Lightbringer. “It is possible that the creature remains out of range, but an animal or mechanical guardian is equally likely. Flamebearer, if you would place your light spell to illuminate the further half of this room we may get a clearer view.”

Lightbringer strides a few paces (say 10 feet or so) in the direction that Gil indicated, then stops and begins to scan the area ahead with his ability to detect evil (60 foot cone), his sword in hand.

Rodergo whispers; "flame give me the sight....." and Tebows for a second.

Ha!

Lightbringer clanks along ten feet or so behind Janosz, his own darkvision allowing him to see.

I presume Janosz is leading, LB stays close behind him.

"Agreed," Lightbringer agrees.

"It appears that the construct suit will dramatically increase your combat ability," comments Lightbringer. "Be careful though, it will not be indestructable. Let us continue."

We'll head towards the doorway that Janosz followed the tracks through after grabbing the useful gear.

Lightbringer looks between Janosz, who has proceeded to the next chamber, and Gil, who continues to examine the golem-like exo-suit.

“We should remain together,” the warforged suggests. “Matilda, can you make use of this device? If it still works and can be controlled, it may be a valuable asset in a battle. Ezreal, what of these other items?” Lightbringer gestures to the barbed cables, and the cabinets containing weapons, wands, staves etc. “Are any of these of a magical nature, or likely to aid as against the agents of the Dreaming Dark or the Caretaker?”

"Perhaps it is leaking coolant or lubricant. I detect no evil in this chamber."

Lightbringer waits quietly while the others investigate, though he slowly scans the room with his ability to detect evil as the others look about.

"Yes," agrees Lightbringer.

While Janosz searches the ground for tracks, Lightbringer slowly scans the area for signs of evil. Detect evil, scanning in each direction (left through door, straight ahead down passage and right through door) long enough to try to determine the absence or presence of evil. 60 foot cone. The spell can penetrate barriers, but 1 foot of stone, 1 inch of common metal, a thin sheet of lead, or 3 feet of wood or dirt blocks it.

"Shall we examine these laboratories?" Lightbringer asks of the others.

Happy for LB to stay in the lead, but there may be some value to our stealthy trap-finder types scouting the way ahead?

Bring it.

;-)

Sounds about right, I lose track.

Anyone have a diamond? Basher crushes it up with his adamantine fists. Or, is it reasonable to assume that Rod would have purchased at least a few castings worth of material components for his common spells, and has the diamond dust after crossing the appropriate amount of gold off his character sheet?

Probably doesn't help here, but if anyone has suffered ability damage, LB can cast a lesser restoration on them in the tent before we get moving.

Also, I haven’t been keeping track of Basher’s hp, but if he is still damaged LB will apply an oil of repair moderate damage to him.

Lightbringer leads the way back out of the barracks and to the damaged corridor.

Allright.....spells picked. Unless,.....do we want to try speaking with the dead? More I look, I think one more searing light spell might be of more use to us.......

Sounds like a goer.

“I will stand watch,” states Lightbringer, “along with Basher. I have no utility with magical devices I am sorry Matilda. I am not comfortable with the idea of animating the dead ... I would prefer another way. Illusions or similar. If it comes to it that animating the dead is deemed the best way forward by those wiser and smarter than I, then I will not object, though I humbly request, Flamebearer, that you grant me absolution for allowing such a travesty for the greater good; I concede that fighting the guardian again will expend valuable resources and perhaps put more of us in mortal danger, when there are more pressing matters to attend to – finding a cure for Sir Rolund’s condition and stopping the agents of the Dreaming Dark.”

Carebears:

Spoiler:
“The Flamebearer speaks wisely. Let as many of us as possible wear functioning passes – even if that is only Matilda – and return to the tent together. Are we ready?”

With Caretaker:

Spoiler:
Let’s collect enough passes for all of us plus the folk left back at the tent (if there are enough) and pin them on.

With caretaker:

Spoiler:
Hang on, is there actually a desk here, or the remains of one? If so we should search the desk for visitor or staff passes.

With Caretaker:

Spoiler:
"What now?" Lightbringer asks of the others.

Are there more old (pre-disaster) bodies here? We could try looking for more pass cards.

Throw down your weapons lawbreakers.

“It may not know how many of us there are,” says Lightbringer in a low voice to Rolund and Runzyl. “Rolund, perhaps you and Ezreal stay here with the tent for the moment, your countryman can help you into your armour. Follow with the tent when you are ready. It would be good to test the guardian’s omnipotence.”

With that the warforged follows the others.

Lightbringer speaks quietly to Runzyl and Rolund. “If we can avoid another fruitless and dangerous battle with this guardian, all the better,” the paladin says quietly. “I believe this gambit worth the risk. However, if we go with it and the ruse fails, we lose our advantageous position here. We should be ready to attack it before it can strike if it appears that the Flamebearer’s and Matilda’s plan is on the verge of failure.”

“Do you wish me to accompany you?” Lightbringer asks more loudly to Gil when she volunteers to go alone with the guardian, worried at her safety.
