personally I love leadership and cohorts as a player and DM. I was playing a star wars game as a noble who purchased a droid to be his body guard, the noble wouldn't pull his blaster in a fight, but when his droid was getting over whelmed he freaked out and tried to blast the things attacking his droid.

As a GM, I'm currently running a high level game where 3/4 players have leadership and I love it. I told them I would make a cohort that fit thier character and their goals. The fighter who runs a fighters guild and trains elite troops for the king, well his cohort is monk he bested in combat several years back that has vowed to follow him and learn from him, and help him train troops. The Cavalier has a wizard/loremaster that is his herald, reciting his long list of accomplishments and deeds. The cleric has the high priest of the temple he is in charge of.

They come along when it makes sense, but most of the time are sent to handle affairs the PC's want them to. "My lord trolls attack the western village" "Curses! I was on my way to the front lines of the war, Garock can you take some men and tend to those trolls?"

They make great hooks for adventures for sure.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Rangers do it with both hands, or from a distance, or however the heck they want!

and finally...

CHUCK NORRIS is an honorary Texas RANGER.

nuff said?

Today marks the 52nd anniversary of the plane crash that killed Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper in 1959. This went on to inspire Don Mclean to write American Pie.

Just a little historical tidbit.

My paladin story came from another player being a CN A-hole lol.

He was "created" by another player being a CN sorcer who burned a goblins nursery
it inspired my other friend to make a goblin paladin who had survived that massacre and was mentored by a paladin who took pity on the burned and scarred small goblin child
so his goal was to enlighten/convert goblins and protect children

his name? Neer the goblin.

also what has helped me as a DM and a player with alignment was this article.

really helped make sense of it all.

Check for Traps: All About Alignment

less than one minute! barely enough time to make this post...

hmm I don't know Neil, I think the "Tension Cutter" would make an excellent wondrous magic item!

on that note I am crawling out of my skin to see the results!!

okay...just don't really see the point of that, what sort of archetype would that be..besides...

While in rage, a barbarian cannot use any Charisma-, Dexterity-, or Intelligence-based skills (except Acrobatics, Fly, Intimidate, and Ride) or any ability that requires patience or concentration.

you would need a rage power just to be able to cast any spell. ie moment of clarity....

I just don't see meshing barbarian rages into a wizard to be very superstar to be honest, so I'm glad you have others in mind.

A lot of the archetypes out there already re-invented the wheel at times, so it can be a good idea.

Personally I like the idea more and makes more sense of a mental focused wizard with a mechanic that similar in execution but different in function than rage.

other wise I see..."my wizard rages and activates clarity of mind, then uses rage power X to cast spell with bonus X" then you either end rage and become exhausted or your continue raging and go into melee? Even the rage prophet prestige class doesn't get the ability to cast cure spells while raging until a few levels in.

some input towards your "raging wizard"

stop calling it rage, make it some sort of intense mental focus that temporarily raises their CL or DC's, but then exhausts them afterwords. should also lower AC or something, cause the wizard is so focused he can't pay attention as well to other things.

same idea, new mechanic. I picture the wizard going all red in the face with a bulging vein on his forehead....

thats my thought...everyone here including yourself is stuck on the barbarian rage, I say going with a mental focus that is exhausting. This should substitute for their chosen schools or arcane bond abilities.

okay...so it would seem that life has decided to kick a man while he is down...my grandfather has just been admitted to the hospital....with all this craziness going on in my life I have to step away from games, as I just don't have the mind to be able to run worrying about all this crap going on in my life right now =(

sorry guys...

you guys are ignoring the most important feature...

"Fishing - yes there will be fishing"

honestly i don't see why you would give a Vegas style to FF7...it just doesn't seem to fit!

though I would love to see it remade with better graphics, more materia/limit breaks and a way perhaps to ressurect Aeris...

other than that...make fallout 1&2 using the new engine, but put more of the old fall out in them (i miss blowing up/kicking down doors!!)

you guys are really forgetting some important things here!

a king being controlled by his evil counselor...
the PC's love interest is actually his sister!
Evil villian can only be defeated by specific weapon.

you have found powerful item A), now you must take it to place B) with only a small party, cause the armies are too busy.

one of the NPC's turns out to be a god in disguise.

there is a renegade member of a normally evil race who has sworn to be a champion of good against the evil that is his kin.

the person who starts them on the quest is secretly the BBEG using the party for his own gains.

LUKE I AM YOUR FATHER.

as someone who DM's all the time I get frustrated when I hear talk about "what does the party need" and I always respond the same...

the party needs you to play a character you will like, if you all make bards then I'll make combat that is fitting for a bard team, if you all play wizards i'll adjust the game..

I want indepth and fun characters, not the stereotype party. great game i ran once had 2 rangers, a bard, a fighter, and a monk, no spell casters or healing really it and was lots of fun cause the characters were awesome.

personally I've seen some awesome duo work done by two characters of the same class, rogues flanking each other, spell casters comboing spells (reduce person plus gust of wind great way to deal with pesky medium size annoyance), etc etc.

but you know i'm just that type of dm, I have more fun with cool characters than tactical players. cause honestly if its a numbers game, in the end i'll "win"

hmm metagaming to me is the lvl 3 fighter with a 8 int telling the party they need a magic weapon to beat the gargoyle.....

using knowledge your character wouldn't have.

in response to the hypothetical situation...why would anyone be of the mindset that you would alwyas use sleep hex every time?

the biggest meta gaming I'm used to dealing with is player 1. decides to do specific skill check to look for/figure something out, and player 2. says "oh i want to do that too". or a more recent example...

two players are doing something in building A) on one end of town and suddenly another player decides that he has a feeling he should go to build A) even though he is alway the way accross town and has no reason to be there.

EXPLOSIVE RUNES!

Beltrin

Spoiler:
the letter is being sent back with the caravan and everything to the castle as thats where your family is =)

Keaton smile seems a little weak as he turns to Beltrin "Well I suppose you are right in wanting to be informed and prepared...the biggest danger first on the main road will be bandits, army deserters, and other highwaymen that try to take advantage of travelers. Beyond that there is the goblin tribes in the hills near the great forest. In the forest one of my expidition ran afoul of the druids and paid dearly for it...beyond them there is the normal dangers any untamed wilds hold, predatory animals chief among them." he added.

"the biggest danger lies on the mountain itself, there is where the great Redhammer tribe lives, they are wild men, orcs, and other races supposively driven mad by living too close to the mountain and its mystical properties...rumors are they are cannibals. I only know they are very territorial and guard the mountain with their lives. Of course you will need to be careful returning, any who hear what you have may try to take it for themselves.." he finished with a sigh.

The Maester smiles largely at Kieran "This map is for you good sir, by all means come look and take it with you." he says gesturing to the map. "Now you will need to head north east along the main road from here till you get to the forest of great oaks.. from the you will travel east into the forest, be careful the druids of that wood are known for not being very forgiving if you disrespect their home. If you do not run into the druids, then continue east until you are through the woods, this is the safest path short of having one of the grove guide you themselves." Keaton points to these place on the map.

"From there you will need to cross the river and canyon at Raegar's last stand, then you will want to follow the river east and it will lead you straight to the western slope of the mountain. The plant you are looking for I have named Alyptice, it is a leafy bush that grows along side of large rocks, its leaf is shaped almost like a horse shoe, and it bears a deep blue flower on it. I cannot warn you enough to be careful, as this trip will put you in danger at various times..." Keaton said with a sigh, his trade mark smile falling from his face before he shakes his head and laughs again.

"Aha! and good sir of the king's court I had not forgotten you! Here is the formula as you requested complete with a drawing of the plant." Keaton said handing a rolled up parchment to Mircea. "I trust you'll send this along with my goods to the castle. I imagine your standing with the king will improve greatly when you triumphantly return with an actual specimen..." Keaton says with a large grin.

Daon

Spoiler:

what you know by what you have observed so far...
Bonzo is a famed warrior from the east, his exploits are mostly centered around fighting monsters and corrupt governments. While rumors say he flyings a great dragon, you can clearly see it is a wyvern. he is from the Eastern Alliance of City states.

The Lady with the broad sword and noticable lion headed shield is probably Johlanna, the famed paladin, champion of good, you have absolutely no dirt on her, seems to be a pure as her reputation suggests.

the old looking elf is Braelin, a famed explorer and adventurer once part of a great adventuring company, now he is the only living one from that group. There is a chance he has had a run in with your less than reputable work. Speaks common and most likely elvish. You know he is a champion of a god, but you don't know which one.

Ardra is a famous elvish wizard who has been around for well over 100 years. she has had many apprentices that went on to be strong wizards. Speaks common and most likely elvish.

the gnome identifying himself as Sojourn you know to be a black staff, one of the king's secret "police" that handle threats not to be made public, only being so involved in black dealings would you know what a black staff is, so probably best not to make this knowledge public. You have avoided his kind before, but have not directly dealt with Sojourn. You know him to be of the arcane, most likely a summoner due to the presence of the draconic looking creature near him.

Brynn is the king's chief ranger, a man of the wild, speaks very little but speaks in common. Little to say about this man except you've always avoided anything close to poaching in his neck of the woods so to speak, he is the best at what he does.

the area... this is an old temple, predating the kingdom itself, you know it was once the site of a great battle and it was built over the remains of a horrific beast or demon. the god it was dedicated to is lost to you. The local wild life are hares, hawks, elk, moose, bears, what you would expect to find in say ohio during the winter.

the structure is subtly covered in preserving enchantments and is sanctified most likely. the whole place has its magical aura's concealed but you are able to see through it. they are old spells designed to keep the place "safe".

all of the gathered party are bearing magical items of various different strengths and auras.

Your cohort awaits your return, she seems rather bored and is absent mindedly playing with her bow.

Sojourn & Ardra

Spoiler:
you would recognize Brynn as the head of the king's foresters. A very private man who spends most of his time in the wild, but stead fastly loyal to the king.

Johlanna

Spoiler:
no one in the slightest appears evil....not even the wyvern which is interesting and strange

the man introduced as Allens nods back in greetings. "Now hold your horses all of you...I said I would guide you as I was on my way home as it it. Its true I know the area, and thats why I ain't dumb enough to go up that mountain....as for the map? well thats yours I can't read it let alone need it." Allens barks while he spits on the ground.

"Now as this over talkative gent said, I'm Allens, Allens Burg, so when your ready we can get going..I ain't got all day." He sighs while looking up at the sky.

At this point Maester Keaton laughs and gestures to the packs by the table. [b]"These my friends are some simple supplies, dried foods, warm blankets, some water, and such donated by the town to help you on your journey." Keaton says holding up one of the two large, and apparently heavy packs. "Which of the party will be carrying them?"

[ooc] order of arrivals so you can choose how you are interacting with each other.

Braelin - 1 week
Ardra - 3 days
Sojourn - 2 days
Bonzo - 1 day
Johlanna - not specified, same day arrival? [ooc]

Braelin days 1-4

Spoiler:

You notice immediately the foot prints in the snow, matching a rabbit or other small hare are the only thing disturbing the scenery. Stretching back into your long memory as you cautiously look over the ruins, you can tell this was once a Temple of Sarenrae, from the looks of it has out lasted empires. After 4 days of waiting, Ardra appears teleporting onto the scene.

Ardra day 4

Spoiler:

This building is a marvel of construction, made of the finest marble and what remains of it will probably last more ages to come. This temple was once of great importance, built over the place a great monster was slain that terrorized the land several hundred years ago. Knowing of the ley lines of the world, this temple would also seem to be a perfect place to put a portal with in.

Spell craft, this whole place is surrounded in very strong, but very subtle magics of all schools and hidden so not to be detected by all but the wisest. Unless he is hiding, you see Braelin having made camp here for the last few days.

Sojourn day 5

Spoiler:
upon arrival the first thing you notice is two people camped at the ruins. The building itself is a marvel of construction which would probably considered one of the more majestic places you have seen if it wasn't broken into pieces. the next day a man flying a wyvern arrives from the sky

Bonzo day 6

Spoiler:

Flying through the cold bitter winds, Zaun complains about the weather, being glad that he isn't cold blooded. You notice the building in the distance and as you circle it, you can see 3 people below camped by the building. the following morning Johlanna arrives on the scene

Johlanna morning of winter solstice

Spoiler:
As you arrive to the rising of the sun, you see this beautiful broken temple before you, and camped by it are 4 people and a large winged beast.

Kieran

Spoiler:
Being still very groggy from just waking up, you see the map but can't tell what details they are talking about. However, they immediately join you into the conversation.

Revengance

Spoiler:
You see that they are detailing a route to the Iron peak mountains and have marked land marks to keep an eye out for. As you get closer you hear the Maester talking with this rough looking man, you gather the impression he is to be a guide for part of the way.

The maester notices your approaches, smiles and says loudly "Greetings and good morning! Exciting all isn't this? I was just going over the map here with Allens here, he was here for the festival and has offered to guide you all as far as the mountains, though won't be accompaning you further. He lives just a while away from there and has kindly offered you a place to stay before journeying up the mountain." Keaton says with a large smile gesturing to the gruff man who offers a friendly nod.

Hello all! i'm a gamer in fort collins colorado trying to start up another game/group! I currently have 2 people lined up for a weekly pathfinder game and am looking to add 2-3 more.

If your in the area and are interested please let me know!

UP AND RUNNING! LETS KICK THIS PIG =)

The Game

In a small cozy cabin lit by a fire place an old man rests in a simple chair, surrounding him on the floor is a gathering of small children. They listen to his every word, lost in fascination as he tells story after story. "Very well children, time for one more story then you are off to bed! Now lets see what story should be told..." the old man spoke softly. The children began shouting the names of their favorite stories when a voice from the back of the room carries over.

"Father, tell them a story about the will of the gods, a story of the strength of men, you know the one, after all it was not that long ago.." said a middle aged man with grey just creeping into his hair.

The old man smiled and looked lost in thought for a moment then he began to talk

"It is a quiet winter morning, as the sun rises to light up the world. Drifting slowly snow flakes land upon the ruins of what was once a great church, though now is barely recognizable ruins. Walls have crumbled, ceiling has caved in, and all of its fine trappings and relics long since taken. However this place emits a serene feeling to those who have visited, and superstition whispers that is a sacred and protected place....

Around the ruins the freshly fallen snow is all but undisturbed except by the foot prints of an occassional small animal. This scene could be something like a painting, beautiful...picturesque. Perhaps even something you would think of with a small nostalgic smile, so it is fitting that this is where our story begins." He said as the children grew silent and listened.

"It was here that the heroes of our story first met, each following a call they couldn't ignore.."

You have all found your messages, in your dreams, your prayers, through rumor, mentor, or by research. These have all brought you to this old set of church ruins in the southern part of Orensden. You knew that you were to be here at the onset of the winter solstice, there you would find answers.

You knew that you were supposed to arrive sometime within a week of the solstice, decide when you get here, and by what means of travel, feel free to do any knowledge, perception, or what ever checks you like.

Maester Keaton looks around for a minute before realizing himself verbally trapped by the two foreigners. "Very well good servant of the King, I see your logic and will gladly show my good faith in allowing my wagons to be stored at the castle during this time. I'll begin the preperations and help with having the map drawn up so the party can leave in the morning." Keaton said with what could be considered a resigned sigh.

The Mayor quickly nods and begins getting people together for the wagons, soon the air of celebration is completely gone replaced by the rush of preperations.

Maybe it's time for us to take it upon ourselves to find what's become of our intrepid GM. A ragtag band of forum rats in search of a man in need!

sounds like an adventure hook! I'll roll up a 1st level human moderator, I'm much better at crowd control! who is going to be a troll specializing in spamming?

Alright, cool beans. How would you like me to introduce the character?

You've been at this harvest festival when all of this commotion comes up, feel free to jump out of the crowd, not a hard stretch for a paladin to volunteer for this sort of thing

Drayen: I hear you there! preholidays always suck at work.

The conceding of Kahir made me wonder, how often people leave PBPs and I thought maybe one or two additional players won't hurt...

when it comes to play by post people will jump as soon as there is "something they don't like" be it the DM, how often each player posts, etc.

Spoiler:

My apologies for any lack of information. what you should know and will help with your next post is that it would be a month's travel to the castle by normal roads, but if you paid the toll on the kings road, it would only take 2 weeks. I do forget what i have and have not told people, but this is my mistake not yours and i apologize for frustrating you.

You do not know why he left, except the he left after the old king died. If i ever lack to give information, please call me out on it so that you don't feel like your getting the short end of the stick.
