It's my birthday today and I decided one way to celebrate is spend some cash on Pathfinder-compatible products. There's a lot of those, though, and I'm only allocating a hundred bucks.

So, what do you recommend? I'm primarily lookin' at pdfs.

Thanks in advance!

Since it is your birthday Joela why don't you do this, send me your email address and I will send you a PDF copy of NeoExodus: A House Divided campaign setting as a birthday gift. I mean it IS your birthday and you should be getting a gift, instead of spending your money on a gift.

And if you feel the need to thank me, then tell everyone you know who plays Pathfinder to support the 3PPs of Pathfinder. That is thanks enough. Happy birthday.

Thanks for the reply. Is there ever a situation where you willingly abandon trying to hold on to PI/IP/copyright, because you want other publishers to be freely able to incorporate your work into theirs?

No.

Quote:
Let's say you create 10 generic town shops and release them as a product. You'd like fans to be able to use it in their games, but you also kind of like the idea that maybe one of your shops could appear in some other publisher's fantasy setting one day. So you make it all OGC and nothing PI.

I have done it with some generic products. But if I am making a unique product, I would not have the IP as open.

Quote:
Is that a lame business idea? Am I missing some reason why you should always retain some measure of PI/IP in your products?

Here is a better question, why as a publisher would I use your generic city in my setting instead of creating and using one I created? Why is using your product a better choice then doing it myself?

You might want to look at this as gaming mechanics versus Intellectual Property (IP) situation. You can keep all of the game mechanics open, while keep the IP closed.

Louis Porter Jr. Design has released its newest product line, Adventure Path Iconics for Fire Mountain’s Way of the Wicked adventure path and the NeoExodus: A House Divided (PFRPG) campaign setting at RPGNow.com and DriveThruRPG.com. Here is information on this product:

Fire Mountain Games has blazed a trail to the dark side with the first adventure path for evil characters for the Pathfinder RPG. They have taken what many GMs consider to be the bane of their existence—an entire party of evil player characters—and turned it into a critically acclaimed and highly popular series of adventures. What you have before you is a product designed to get you into the game quickly by providing eight pregenerated characters designed specifically to be run in an Evil Adventure Path. Each character is built using a 25 point buy, as recommended by the writers of the AP. There are four human PCs. Their stat blocks are accompanied by detailed backgrounds and reasons enough for these dark souls to go forth and wreak havoc through the land, including the details of how they came to be incarcerated in the Prison of the Branded, where the adventure begins.

The iconic consist of four human characters and four unique races from the NeoExodus: A House Divided campaign setting such as:
• Cavian: Creatures of myth, whispered in legend, lost in the mists of history – and now returned for reasons unknown to any but themselves. Such are the cavians, a race of humanoid rodents noted for their incredible psionic abilities.
• Kalisan: Calibans are pale-white humanoid creatures native to the north of Exodus. Over time, many calibans have migrated to other parts and are now found in almost every parts of Exodus. Calibans have a well-deserved reputation for cannibalism and savagery. Kalisans are the most civilized of their race and are indistinguishable physically from their feral caliban cousins, although calibans can distinguish one another. Calibans tend to be much more feral and are less suited to be player characters. However the Kalisans are well-adapted.
• P’Tan: In ancient times, the First Ones enslaved all of Exodus; their plans were served well by countless thousands of unwilling servants. Once their slaves rose up and overthrew them, however, the First Ones were cast into the depths - bereft not only of their power, but also of the vast majority of the very slaves who brought them low.
• Sasori: Resources wax and wane, weapons and spells become obsolete, the master craftsman of one era is displaced by the industry of the next, and even land becomes worthless with the shifting ages. But information, say the sasori, is the one commodity that is always in demand. These scorpion-like creatures are brokers of information, by turns the greatest secret-keepers and the supreme spies of Exodus. Sasori are also known for their willingness - and ability - to kill to protect their secrets.

These iconic consist of:
• Anxelica Luris, Female human inquisitor
• Arok Headtaker, Male kalisan magus
• Cormac Blackwood, Male human antipaladin
• Ghostwhisker, Male cavian alchemist (mindchemist)
• Glimmershade, Female sasori rogue
• Kalina Rhys, Female human cleric of Asmodeus
• Rajas the Defiler, Male p’tan barbarian
• Zachris Swayne, Male human sorcerer

Louis Porter Jr. Design has released its newest product for their Treasures of NeoExodus line, Scepter of Perpetual Sacrifice for the NeoExodus: A House Divided (PFRPG) campaign setting at RPGNow.com and DriveThruRPG.com. Here is information on this product:

The most devout priests among Khayne’s worshippers revel in shed blood, whether from their own flayed backs and lacerated limbs or from tortured victims consumed by diabolical rites of sacrifice. Cannabilism is encouraged, and his apostles rouse a bloodlust as primal as the deity it is inspired by. No true minister of the dark god’s teachings considers his own blood too sacred to spill, and their traditions of mutilation extend far past the shallow waves cast in the histories of Exodus by his best remembered devotees. While mass sacrifices and other common rites of devotion are better known, the Scepter of Perpetual Sacrifice represents the crowning achievement of Khayne’s earliest zealots. This ancient weapon is emblematic of and testament to the Blood God’s primordial power, with its most potent abilities fueled by the wounds it inflicts on both victim and wielder.

The Treasures of NeoExodus: Scepter of Perpetual Sacrifice is created for use with your NeoExodus: A House Divided campaign setting home gaming for the Pathfinder RPG. The Treasures of NeoExodus series focus on creating unique and interesting magical and mundane items that you can use in your NeoExodus home games that give you more a personal connection to the item. This PDF comes with a background and history of Scepter of Perpetual Sacrifice, its special mundane and/or magical qualities plus magic item containing detailed information and blank versions of the cards. Everything you need to incorporate Scepter of Perpetual Sacrifice into your character’s background and your gaming sessions is here making them even more appealing, special and personal.

Yes. I believe is so much that I tell other 3PP in my Transparency Agenda video blog to don't even waste time trying to do their own psionic system, "Dreamscarred Press has psionics locked down."

Its certainly a cool idea, but not very likely for all of us publishers to actually get together and work together on such a project. For one, trying to divvy up profits for such a book would be an absolute NIGHTMARE to pull off, so if it were made, it would probably be a free digital product; we would need some kind of profit in order to afford print runs.

I disagree. It would be quite easy to do, just split the work evenly between two companies like Green Ronin and Paradigm Concepts did with Inter link. See the original press release and concept here.

So if Dreamscarred press and LPJ Design did something it would be a two part adventure where DS takes one part and we take the other. We hire the same writer to write both parts and split those cost, editing and art budget down the middle. Each person sells their adventure and they both promote them as a two parter. Each of us make our money based on what we sold and nothing needs to be "split between companies". All printing could be handled on POD so there is no upfront cost. When you sell you make money.

Quote:
Even if we did make it a free product, building stat blocks is tedious work, and I don't know how many publishers would be willing to just up and create that much product for free. I mean, I'm positively insane and probably would do it, but some of the people involved actually rely on the publishing gig for income. Might not be the best use of their time, but I also don't want to put words into other people's mouths, so who's to say? The world is a weird place.

Doesn't need to be free. You can sell it based on the comments I just made. We have a few writers who actually LIKE doing stat blocks so you find the right people everything can be handled. Just think outside the box and it is an easy project where everyone can get paid.

Louis Porter Jr. Design has released its newest product for their Treasures of NeoExodus line, Claw of Xon for the NeoExodus: A House Divided (PFRPG) campaign setting at RPGNow.com and DriveThruRPG.com. Here is information on this product:

Over the course of the Twilight War, the Reis Confederacy committed many atrocities; chief among them was the employment of the necromancer Xon. His undead legions and horrific experiments served the Confederacy well, as he developed a powerful weapon for his reanimated troops. This weapon’s dark origins were steeped in blood; foul necromantic rituals gave it the power to tear forth the souls of men, turning them into ghostly specters that hungered for the living. Xon gifted these weapons to his most trusted servants and powerful creations so that they might spread his evil influence across the battlefield, drowning out the sound of clashing steel and cannon fire with a wailing choir of tortured souls.

The Treasures of NeoExodus: Claw of Xon is created for use with your NeoExodus: A House Divided campaign setting home gaming for the Pathfinder RPG. The Treasures of NeoExodus series focus on creating unique and interesting magical and mundane items that you can use in your NeoExodus home games that give you more a personal connection to the item. So here is a project that I have been working on in silence over the last few month and I am finally revealing what it is. Ever since I say the ebook revolution happened, I wanted to be part of it and I know that NeoExodus would be at the forefront of it. So one of the original people who worked on the the first edition of NeoExodus, Joshua Cole , got in contact with me about doing it I decided now was the perfect time. In addition, we thought it would be best to get you all interested in what we were doing by give these story away on this blog for free. So Joshua and I developed an outline and we decided that this first story would be a three part ebook. So Joshua just sent us our first rough draft of the ebook and where have sent it to editing and we hope to have the first part of the ebook up very soon at this blog. So once again thanks for your support of what we are doing here.

Will there be a intro book like Way of the Wicked Free Preview: Prison Break for this kickstarter?

Call it Asgard. It makes complete sense.

If you are looking to save money on artwork, look overseas.
This makes me sad.

It might make you sad but it is a fact of business. When I wanted this image created I received bids from several artist. All the artist from the US wanted $300 and up. The artist who did the work was from South America and did it for less than $75 US. When ever penny counts you go with the best deals that give you the best quality for the best price. Or would you as the customer prefer to pay three times as much for the same product due to art cost? And you think the Pathfinder Core Rulebook is expensive now.

What the sad part is that "work" of any kind is now on a global market and artwork is a commodity. If I had to depend exclusively only on US artist, the cost of my products would be more and in some case the quality would not be as good.

The world is so small now, I can assign work before I go to bed to someone overseas and when I wake up in the morning have the work to me. The power of distance and time on a business can be highly powerful and highly profitable.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

When it comes to art, LPJ Design is normally only looking for either full color full body character design or half page (8.5x5.5 inches) full color images and we pay the same amount for both. Item design and headshot character design we pay 50% of the body character design rate. Quarter page art isn't worth the cost to me and you can save money on doing a single character design images versus paying for a full page full color piece.

If you are looking to save money on artwork, look overseas. There are a lot of great artist looking for exposure in American / Canadian products. The best place to start looking for artist is on deviantart. Search fantasy in the search bar and then start looking. You are bound to find some good artist there. I have and I know the guys at SGG have also.

Thanks
Reebo

First: Have a portfolio up for 3PP to see.

Second: Email 3PP you would actually like to work for because you like what they do more than how much they will pay you.

Third: Do a free stock art PDF and give away 5 pieces of artwork. 3PP are always looking for new artist AND to save money on artwork. If we like your stock art we will come looking FOR YOU.

Hope these help.

I've been GMing and playing Pathfinder for a while and I love it. I also love how Paizo sees working with and promoting third party publishers to be a win-win. I really like adventure paths; I've played a few of the Paizo ones and I'm GMing Reign of Winter at the moment. I'd like to start looking at some third party products; any recommendations on what would be some of the best stuff to try first? I'm not familiar with any of the third-party companies.

If you are really unsure and not familiar with any third party companies I would suggest that you look at the FREE 3PP Pathfinder releases first. When you do this you canget a taste at what these people do and better still it doesn't cost you anything so there is no risk. Here are a few free products from LPJ Design that I would suggest:

Daily Spell List (PFRPG)

Buff Sheet (PFRPG)

Undefeatable 21.5: Cavalier (PFRPG)

Initiative Cards (PFRPG)

I hope you find this helpful.

Yeah, d20pfsrd.com is something COMPLETELY different, as you've shown - its essentially one of the most vital signs with gazillions of traffic and content - content that shares the same target audience as your ads. I'm not surprised at all at how efficient d20pfsrd is with ads - LPJr has talked quite extensively on his blog about your advertisement-prowess and I have no reason to doubt him.

Perhaps I should rephrase: For a small light like me and my site, I don't see ads working.

Hope I didn't offend anyone!

Personally, I think we all want to make sure that you are making some kind of income from all the work you do for free. I mean I have gotten great and bad reviews from you but they have always been quality reviews of the product no matter our personal relationship which is why I respect your reviews.

But I do understand WHY you don't want to do it. I think since you are giving away so much quality for FREE you should be able to find some way to generate some income from all you do.

Louis Porter Jr. Design has released its newest product for their NeoExodus Chronicles line, Fleshwraith (PFRPG) for the NeoExodus: A House Divided (PFRPG) campaign setting at RPGNow.com and DriveThruRPG.com. Here is information on this product:

My, yes, I love animals and insects. Built for survival, perfect predators—even the prey is somewhat incredible. You learn a lot studying them…and don’t think I’ve no idea what you’re thinking about. Or that I’ve never heard people talking behind my back. I’ve seen them, heard them. Saying I’m weird, crazy, creepy, ugly. All stupid and jealous. Except this one, a great boy. Not the brightest one…I think he had a crush on me. A farm boy—orphan—watching over another awkward orphan girl, top of her class…the perfect couple, you see? Poor sap defended me every time, until he took one too many blows for me. Classic story: I was in the woods searching for some rare Hymenoptera, him glued to me like crap on my shoes, and right there: boom, a hungry bear! Fun fact: The boy had always been dead afraid of bugs. But unlike me, he had great eyesight and jumped first. Yep, he took on a damn bear long enough for some lumberjacks to hear our cries and chop through it. My own personal 10-year-old little-big hero. He didn’t make it through the night. Thinking back on it, he had pretty eyes…wanna see? I always keep a copy of his eyeballs in my lab to watch over me.

The Fleshwraith includes:

• New Base Class: Fleshwraith
• New Augmentations: Genetic Lab & Hivemind
• Host and Symbiont
• Nine All new Fleshwraith Spells including Caustic Spit, Grant Evolution, Sticky Net and Toxin Graft
• Fkeshwraith Feat: Body Horror
• 2-Point Evolution: Survival of the Wisest
