Kzrira sighs and then carefully attempts to explain her concerns without actually revealing them:
Kzrira pauses and takes a quick drink from her waterskin.
Kzrira reaches up at Rombard and scratches his chin:
Diplomacy: 1d20 ⇒ 13
I love hiking. I think that we sold our home in Chicago last week and are flying to New Hampshire to look at houses next week. I want my boys to be able to hike as much as possible, something that is nigh impossible considering that the closest mountain to Chicago is about 1000 miles away. Being able to ski every weekend will be nice as well.
Kzrira watches the men heading to the old "tannery" knowing that its business has changes slightly in the past few months. Perhaps we need some type of an accident there. I would hate to hurt anyone, but that place needs to be shut down. Once it becomes too dark to be able to see the roadway leading down the hill, she climbs down from the tower and heads over to visit with Hadar and Hadra. Kzrira knocks on the door, and waits for the good herders to answer. Good evening my friends, how are you doing? How is that mischievous kid we rescued last year doing? After a few minutes of friendly chatter, her questions take on a more serious note. I have a bit of a concern. Since I have returned to this good town, I see what appears to be the same illicit and generally evil business occurring that took place with the gnolls in charge. Do you have any knowledge of who could have turned the good princess from her noble quest to rescue Kelmarane, to allowing pesh dealers and brothels to abound? She pauses for a moment: You are herders, the type of people who others would speak in front of without realizing that you are listening. Yet, I know that every day while you are out with your flocks, you are watching and seeing everything that takes place hereabouts. You can smell out a wolf or coyote or lion stalking your flocks. You see the bandits waiting in the bushes to steal one of your kids. What I am interested in is whether you have seen anyone speaking with the princess? Or anyone strange entering and leaving the town?
Hey, I copied you. Thought I had been misspelling it all along. Kzrira nods in agreement.
Kzrira shakes her head in confusion: This is when that little dragon would be mighty useful. He could simply follow Undra wherever she went. We can use invisibility some more, but that only gives us a few minutes to track her. Perhaps there are others in the town who know about Undara. Someone who has watched her and knows her patterns and habits.
Kzrira looks from one spell caster to the other. You both know that I tend to be a little direct in my approach to social situations. If someone is going to be talking to the Princess and Undra, it should be one of you, or perhaps Amir. Looking to Karethas: Can you make the dead talk? It would be most interesting to know who, or what killed Zataran. I would be very surprised if it was a random attack, the claw marks and leaving the body seem to be someone who simply wanted him dead. And then tossing the body into the woods shows someone who wanted to hide the evil deed, but simultaneously show someone, or something quite lazy.
Kzrira looks to Amir:
Someone needs to post a plan. This seems to be more Faelar and Karethas. Amir and I can track and follow Undra as necessary.
After listening to the others: Perhaps we should reverse the question. Rather than proving to the princess that Undra is evil. is there a way for us to reveal Undra's evil nature? How is she concealing herself? Is she using magic or is it some other power? Kzrira turns and looks to Karethas:
It is possible the Undra is simply a crazed human worshipper of this div thing. However, what if she is actually one of these creatures? We have already fought several of them. The strange sand creature when we first arrived and the fiery head inside the arena. If she is using magic to conceal her form, or perhaps magic to control the princess, do you have the skill to dispel this magic?
I think that usually when posts disappear, it is because I use the preview function, and then close the page or go to something else without actually posting. I have had this occur more than a few times. Kzrira looks at the pendant, but has no clue what it is.
As Kzrira gets back with the others, she grins. I was unable to get in with Amir to search the office, so I had to create distractions. I think that I was successful, by the time we left, there was an all out brawl involving several scary looking ladies of the night and one of the least talented musicians I have ever seen. As she finishes, she is almost laughing. She then looks to Amir:
Kzrira feels almost ill hearing how those in the brothel are talking. As the door is not particularly accessible at this point, she will continue to count the minutes so that she and Amir can escape before the invisibility wears off. She also watches to make sure that the old hag stays away from the office door if at all possible.
When Kzrira sees the older woman listening at the door, Kzrira attempts to move something directly behind the woman so that if/when she stands up, she will fall backwards over it. Kzrira then attempts to find a squeaky board in the floor and will step on it to make annoying creaking noises to further distract the woman. I do not know whether I need any rolls. Let me know if I need more stealth or bluff rolls or anything else.
I just looked at my encumbrance and realized that with the heavy shield, I would be medium encumbrance. (I assume that I would not be carrying 3 waterskins and a bedroll in my backpack for an in town excursion like this as well). As this is more of a scouting and information mission, Kzrira would have left her large and unwieldy shield behind to enable her and Amir to move as quickly and quietly as possible. Without the heavy shield and the heavy travelling equipment, Kzrira is light encumbrance and has a normal 30' move. Thus, she should be able to move up to 25' at a -5 penalty to stealth and 50' with a double move. I do not know if this helps, but her intention was to create a distraction that would enable both her and Amir to get into the office. If this is impossible, she would use the Message spell to stay in contact with Amir while standing guard outside. If the chance arose she would immediately sneak into the office. Sorry for a lack of clarity, the combination of no maps and playing one of the few characters I have who actually needs to worry about encumbrance cause me to forget some of the necessary preparatory steps before beginning the scouting.
Kzrira quickly moves across the room and knocks over a cheap vase which is near two of the more amorous individuals in the room resulting in a rather large crash. She then quietly moves back to Amir to slip into the room as soon as attention is directed toward the broken vase. Stealth: 1d20 + 9 + 20 ⇒ (2) + 9 + 20 = 31
Hold off on it. If we have not told her yet and we have already seen her, she might take it the wrong way. Either Karethas should have told her when he first saw her, or we wait until Undra is figured out and then tell her saying that we withheld the info as we feared that Undra might do something to harm Garavel.
The chime is more useful for magic locks which Amir would have problems with - Hold Portal and similar things. Although I think that someone other than Amir should be carrying it just in case we get split up and need to open something without him.
Kzrira follows carefully behind Amir holding his shoulder so that the two of them are able to stick together. Not having much skill at opening locks, other than with her axe, Kzrira waits patiently while Amir seeks to unlock the door.
Kzrira looks to where she thinks Amir is. Straight in the front door. Lets see if there is an office or if Undra has a room. Kzrira looks to see if any of them appear to be living quarters, rather than by the hour rentals. Perception: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (13) + 9 = 22 +2 more if Gnolls
Kzrira looks to Faelar. Stay with Karethas. Amir and I should be right back. If you hear calls for help, then by all means come and join the fun. I would say that we should all go, but I do not know how you and Karethas would stay hidden. Perhaps you and Karethas could use the invisibility, but then Amir and I would have to rely purely on our skills. We are adept at stealth, but every advantage helps.
I will get a horse. Probably purchased a good one while on patrol at some point while learning the saddle. Heavy, combat trained is my preference with Light Armor Proficiency instead of Run. Chain shirt barding and a military saddle. I have never really used horses or any other mount in PF, or D&D, for any purpose other than riding, so it will be a little different for me tracking and keeping track of stuff. Let me know if this is ok. Total cost would be 300gp (horse), 400gp (barding), 20gp (military saddle), 8gp (saddlebags). This will put me over by about 800 total from the 12000 gp wealth target not counting regular mundane equipment.
We wrap it up in a bedroll or something and carry it. I assume that we have mounts of some sort. Otherwise, I will help to carry it. Burying it here will just make it harder for the carrion to dig it up, but it will still get dug up.
After searching as long and carefully as she can, Kzrira lets out a disgusted sigh.
She once again looks at the body getting very frustrated. Turning to the others.
Kzrira nods. Yes, lets do what we can. As she says this, she stops to think before turning to Karethas and Faelar: Would either of you know what might be able to rip a gnome limb from limb like this? It appears to have had powerful claws, but I doubt it was a Katapeshi lion as I would have thought that such a creature would have consumed its kill. Before the area is any more trampled, Kzrira makes a careful survey of the area attempting to locate any sign of the creature that did this. Looking for tracks, broken twigs, or anything else that might indicate what this might have been. Survival: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (12) + 7 = 19
Kzrira feels briefly ill, but then steels herself and turns to wave the others over. When they get near, she tells them what she has found. It seems that someone does not wish for us to help the Princess. While I could care less for her personally, I do not think that she is evil, just a spoiled and untrained brat. Nonetheless, someone, or something, evil is about. Our friend Zataran has given his life to warn us and ask our help. His remains are ahead in the woods. I am afraid that we have been tasked with determine what is causing this. It might be this rumored Carrion King. It might be Undra who is other than she has appeared. Or, it might be something or someone else. But, whatever it is, we must find and defeat it. We all know that the packmasters and their useless guards care less about good or evil, only about money. Sarenrae blesses the good, but her worship has not yet returned, although I think that we should invite her temple in Solku to establish a new temple here, either in the town or near the monastery if necessary. But, for now we need to investigate and resolve Zataran's murder and the declining society of Kelmarane before any more innocent and good citizens are murdered. Heal/Survival: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15 <-- add +1 for Survival
I have used a Rod of Reach to extend the range of the Message Spell on many occasions in another campaign. A great way to talk over long distances. Rod of Reach is also fun in conjunction with Spectral Hand - hey, lets deliver Shocking Grasp at 600 feet. Kzrira listens. I am not as sneaky as our friendly rogue, but should be able to keep out of sight fairly well. I can help search or easily watch to make sure that nobody else arrives while we are examining the old tannery. Does Undra still reside within the tannery? Or has she moved closer to the Princess? Kzrira still has trouble recognizing the spoiled brat as the leader of the town.
Hmmm - just discovered a new feat - Slayer's Knack. With it I think that I can avoid Weapon Focus which is necessary to get Improved Critical. As I plan on taking Favored Enemy(Outsider(evil or fire)) at Ranger/5, instead of Weapon Focus(longbow) at this level, I am going to take Mounted Combat as I am hoping to get a Animal Companion I can ride in a few levels. Plus, as I have spent the last year riding and patrolling, and I was a caravan guard before, this area makes sense.
As usual, Kzrira is up early training with her bow and also a longsword that seems to have replaced the lighter rapier she was previously carrying. When she sees the others, she sheathes her sword and slides her bow into a quiver which appears much too small to hold the large bow. She then walks over as she wipes a sheen of sweat from her brow even in the cool morning air:
Ok - leveled finally. I went with Fighter/4 - Dodge, Mobility for feats. I also swapped Weapon Focus(Longbow) for Weapon Finesse as this is a prerequisite for several later feats. I am dropping the rapier and getting a longsword and heavy shield +1 for my backup. I dropped four ranks into ride since I have been on horseback a substantial amount of the last year patrolling. I think that the next 2 or 3 levels will be ranger, and then I will start taking Horizon Walker. Seems to fit my character and should be fun to play.
Kzrira nods in agreement.
I can go with Amir and see whether there is anything to be found. I would hate for Amir to go alone and not have the support of the rest of us should he find something more than a run down tannery and the belongings of a former slave.
Kzrira looks quizzically at the others: Knowing whether she has some form of magic is important. But, I wish to know her motives. Is she evil or good? Does she believe in a reign of chaos, or order and law. It is important to know what her beliefs and morals are before we attempt to discern and interpret what, if anything, her intentions for the princess are. Kzrira still practically spits when she says the princesses name. Clearly the archer does not hold the self proclaimed princess in very high esteem.
Kzrira listens to the others discuss Undra. You all know that I did not trust her. She sent us to kill the snake, which we did. But, what do we know of her? She said that she was a prisoner of the gnolls, but why keep just one tanner? It was not as though she had special powers. Kzrira looks to Karethas: Would you have the ability to determine whether her motives are just? To determine whether she is simply a former slave who has let power go yo her head, or if she never was a slave, but part of the problem from the beginning.
Thanks for the input. I am out of town for two days - which sucks as things are just starting to turn interesting again. I will try to get on when I can, but my time is likely to be limited. I will have my character's level 5 decision made by Wednesday or Thursday.
Sorry for the delay all. Still trying to figure out what to do with my character. Does anyone have any info on Mounted Combat feats (Mounted Combat, Mounted Archery, etc.) They look cool, but seem extremely narrowly focused. I would not mind taking Mounted Combat Style (Mounted Archery or Trick Riding) as my Ranger level 2 Style Feat. If I took Trick Riding, then I would have to rethink my equipment as light armor is necessary to use the feat. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated. I really want to get moving forward with this, and am really stumped on what direction to take my character. Initially it was pure archery, but with only 4 in the party, I want to develop her more. Options seem to be taking Ranger/2 now and selecting a ranger feat, but which tract.
- Mounted would give me some color, but I am really having a tough time seeing a lot of use in the feats unless one is really mounted focused - lance, greataxe with strength, etc. There is Mounted Archery, but I am not a mounted type person, so cannot figure how useful it is and I see nothing helpful in all the hundreds of thousands of messageboard posts. - Two-Weapon would give me Power Attack which is useful and would help if I were unable to use my bow. - TWF is right down my alley, but seems way too feat intensive at this point. - Sword and Board I love, but as with TWF requires too many feats. - With Crossbow the feats are perfect - Deadly Aim & Improved Precise Shot, but this seems really cheesy. -------
-------
Don't forget, with my ranger level, I can use the Cure wand as well. Fighter 4 Feat: Dodge
Skills Points: 2+2int+1race+1FC = 6 HP: 8+1con+1trait/FC Levels 6-7 - Ranger/2-3, Mounted Archery for the feat Level 8-10/11-13 - either Horizon Walker or Ranger, back and forth on which first,
