I'd also like to point out that PaizoCon offers a very high percentage of the best PFS GMs on the planet.* It's a great place for new players to get their feet wet.
*THE best GM volunteered too late and will be stuck "playing" all weekend. ;-)
I'd like to point out, once again, that wolflord played a level 6 character at tier 8-9 in Rebel's Ransom. A very difficult and potentially deadly scenario even when not playing up. The NPC that killed him is NOT optimized by any sense of the word, it's just a difficult class for PCs to go up against (much like the Magus).
I've certainly found encounters that have been optimized by (a) picking a tough monster of a given CR rather than a weaker one, or (b) adding environmental factors and then not including those in the encounter CR, or (c) all of the above.
a) that's pretty subjective and often the monsters aren't picked out of a hat like you make it seem. I've seen far more non-optimized class based NPCs than strong-for-their-CR monsters.
b) If the environmental factors aren't included in the CR of the encounter then it's the wrong CR. It's not a matter of optimizing. And again with a counter-point, there are plenty of encounters were the bad guys are too big for their environment and have to squeeze or there's too many and they can't maneuver properly for the given tactics.
Lastly, the boards themselves have become a turf of sorts for the 25 or so posters who literally are posting constantly. Their opinions overshadow everyone else's, Its like a tug-of-war to see who can better state their argument (i.e. opinion)
Posting a lot shouldn't automatically be a bad thing. Some of us are trying to be open/accepting of alternate/opposing positions.
Agreed. I don't want my side of the argument to win, I want PFS to win.
I'm willing to bet that those who post the most are the most often ignored. Don't assume that because someone posts a lot that they have a greater influence within our society.
There are several that can run short (especially if Thea is the GM!), but usually that only happens with practice.
There are also a handful of PFS scenarios that could be chopped down and run in two hours, but if you do that, you shouldn't hand out chronicles for completion (which likely defeats the purpose).
The whole sleep haunt thing comes up in certain mid-level season 2 scenario. If you haven't played a scenario , don't read this:
Spoiler:
The way that one works is this:
Surprise Round: Haunt manifests, save vs. Deep Slumber. Those who fail fall unconscious, are reduced to 0 hit points and slip below the 3-ft of water.
Round 1: If your turn comes up before the monsters, you get a con check. Fail the con check and you go to -1 hp. If/when the monsters (sometimes a swarm) deal damage to you, you're at -x hp anyway.
Round 2: If you are dying at the start of your turn while underwater, you're dead.
Of course, before your turn comes up in round 2 someone in your party could pull your head above the water and the danger is averted.
For the record, I've only ever killed an Eidolon with this haunt (take that WelbyBumpus!). I go out of my way to explain the drowning rules in full detail after the haunt manifests so I don't kill any PCs with a subset of rules that rarely comes up.
Since Season 0, I've been expecting a meta-plot running through the mission briefings. Cheliax wants to spy on Noble X, and wants this spell component, and wants to uncover the secret of making that kind of undead ... and then at the end of the season, Noble X is corrupted into an unspeakable walking dead in the middle of his address to the Taldan Assembly.
So far, I've been waiting in vain, but I've built up some fanciful plotlines from imagining what the metaplots could be.
I hope you come to the PFS members meeting at Gen Con.
Where we can shove him in a sack and take turns beating him with a wooden cane?
4) More player handouts and maps. It's always nice to give the players something tangible. I try to bring relevant generic maps, etc, to put on the table, and often print out images from the scenario for atmosphere, but scenario specific handouts like the Blakros museum visitors map or Kortos mountain trails are good.
While I agree that I'd love to see more official handouts in scenarios, nothing is stopping a GM from creating their own. I have roughly 20 different hand outs for Midnight Mauler. Everything from knowledge checks to important NPCs to facts about Ustalav.
More hand outs empower players to become immersed in the action w/o having to stop and ask me for information I've already provided (or an NPC provided in the previous act, etc).
I'm only strict when I need to be. Usually that's only after a player at the table is doing something that disrupts the fun of everyone else at the table.
This is exactly why I started that thread, to collect feedback from former players and for the community and its leaders to generate ideas that prevent current players from becoming former players.
edit: players = participants
It wasn't a slam, honest Kyle. Sometimes you get just what you ask for. So if you ask for what is wrong, you get complaints. If you ask for what would make someone happy, you get that answer instead.
I.e "What's wrong with dinner?" versus "What would you like for dessert?"
I didn't mean to undercut you in anyway, and if it came across that way, I sincerely apologize.
My statement's meaning got lost in the webs of the internets. I was just making a statement that the other thread was merely the beginning.
For the record, I wouldn't bet on any races being added when the Advanced Race Guide becomes available. There are other races that have been statted out for some time that aren't Pathfinder Society legal; just because another hardback comes out doesn't mean they'll make them all options.
Not saying it won't happen, but personally I feel that the odds are pretty slim.
In almost every mod there are several paragraphs of background for the 'Judges eyes only' at the beginning of the scenario. Often it's the glue that holds the whole thing together and yet the characters never hear of it!!
I try to incorporate that material when I can throughout the adventure, but it can be tough. I'd love to see that material played out more for the players and not just the judge. I guess in short, what I mean is more role play (spaced out throughout the scenario) possibly at the expense of one of the combat encounters.
This, this, dear all that is evil and unholy, this! I lost track trying to count how many times Sir Miles and I discussed this very topic.
It seems like I always have to work my arse off to get any of the background in front the players eyes.
I've been reading threads like "You Used To Play PFS, But Now..." and it's got me wondering something.
What can we do to help?
And I don't want to disparage that discussion, I think it's fine. Enlightening even. Nevertheless, it (if just by the way the discussion is framed) emphasizes the negative with a side order of mourning. That's why I decided to start a brand new thread.
I'm also NOT posting in any official capacity, other than a concerned member of the community- just like all of you.
This is exactly why I started that thread, to collect feedback from former players and for the community and its leaders to generate ideas that prevent current players from becoming former players.
Kyle, sorry for the threadjack. I return you now to the true purpose of this thread.
I'm not sure what that is any more. We can always define a new purpose? How about making it a thread about banning PFRPG stuff we don't like in PFS? That'd be original!
Can we please stop asking questions about this topic? I'd prefer that Mark spend more time developing scenarios and Mike spend his time making sure that Gen Con is the best ever.
Guys, you're getting away from what this thread is supposed to be about. This:

It's kind of funny how Kyle is becoming an urban legend in PFS...
Did you guys hear that Kyle collects the character sheets from all the PCs he kills that aren't Raised and pins them on his bedroom ceiling? He said that it helps him go to sleep happy and wake up with a purpose. Many times he doesn't even need to roll the damage, players just accept the inevitable and hand him their character sheets.
Trisha doesn't let me use pins, I have to use poster putty.
I guess it is a matter who you believe more...Mark or me.... His word against mine.....Fight Fight!!!!!!!! Maybe he doesn't want to take away your 5th star but maybe I do..... Who will win?????
