Kressle shook her head.

I think i'll just retire early for the evening... Want to keep a low profile for now, at least until I get settled in.

Kalev going too?

Knocked out, Kressle is healed by Malthir and rises groggily to her feet.

That I did Malthir, I was sure the match was mine she grumbled, but good-naturedly. You are surrounded by far too much metal, you great lummox

Kressle pressed her advantage and tried to finish the duel, but Malthir's armour and shield stubbornly resisted her every attack! The crowd grew quiet and tense as they watched what must surely be the final moments in the duel, with both competitors battered and bruised.

1d20 + 12 + 4 - 4 ⇒ (1) + 12 + 4 - 4 = 13
1d6 + 11 ⇒ (1) + 11 = 12

1d20 + 7 + 4 - 4 ⇒ (14) + 7 + 4 - 4 = 21
1d6 + 11 ⇒ (2) + 11 = 13

1d20 + 12 + 4 - 4 ⇒ (9) + 12 + 4 - 4 = 21
1d6 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10

1d20 + 7 + 4 - 4 ⇒ (4) + 7 + 4 - 4 = 11
1d6 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13

Badly bruised by Malthir's sword thwacks, Kressle threw caution to the wind and gave the fight her all. She repeated her earlier trick of hobbling Malthir with a blow to his ankle and landed another brutal blow to his head.

1d20 + 12 + 4 - 4 ⇒ (10) + 12 + 4 - 4 = 22 If hits, Malthir gains entangled. (Miss)
1d6 + 11 ⇒ (3) + 11 = 14

1d20 + 12 + 4 - 4 ⇒ (18) + 12 + 4 - 4 = 30 If hits, Malthir gains entangled. (Hit)
1d6 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10

1d20 + 7 + 4 - 4 ⇒ (14) + 7 + 4 - 4 = 21 (Miss)
1d6 + 11 ⇒ (4) + 11 = 15

1d20 + 7 + 4 - 4 ⇒ (18) + 7 + 4 - 4 = 25 (Hit due to entangled)
1d6 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13

This is going down to the wire... 23 damage for Malthir.

Kressle winced as the flat of Malthir's blade glanced from her temple and retaliated, landing several hits on Malthir's armour and one with the haft of her axe to his neck.

1d20 + 12 + 4 - 4 ⇒ (16) + 12 + 4 - 4 = 28 (Hit)
1d6 + 11 ⇒ (1) + 11 = 12

1d20 + 12 + 4 - 4 ⇒ (12) + 12 + 4 - 4 = 24
1d6 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10

1d20 + 7 + 4 - 4 ⇒ (8) + 7 + 4 - 4 = 15
1d6 + 11 ⇒ (3) + 11 = 14

1d20 + 7 + 4 - 4 ⇒ (14) + 7 + 4 - 4 = 21
1d6 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11

Kressle mirrored Malthir's movements and also fought on the defensive, wary of his heavily enchanted blade. Although she frequently struck his shield and armour, the ranger did not harm Malthir with any of the rain of blows she inflicted on him.

Won't bother with the modifiers as she can only hit on any of her attacks with a 20 with your AC at 29... Note her AC is now 24.

1d20 ⇒ 4

1d20 ⇒ 9

1d20 ⇒ 12

1d20 ⇒ 14

Malthir's blade slammed into Kressle's shoulder and she grunted as he withdrew. Her axe sang out through the air as it glanced off Malthir's plate shoulder.

1d20 + 14 + 4 - 4 ⇒ (7) + 14 + 4 - 4 = 21

Kressle refused to be baited into approaching Malthir and watched him in a crouched stance, seeing what his next move would be.

Delay.

Baron Malthir VS Kressle-

Kressle grinned wolfishly at Malthir's nonchalant comment and the grin only widened as his sword clanged off her breastplate harmlessly. She retaliated with a dizzying flurry of axe haft blows- with every blow at least passing the Baron's guard and hitting his full plate. The first of her blows that struck the Baron of Kardas was in combination with a low swing that struck Malthir's leg, cruelly hobbling him and hindering his stance- she struck another powerful blow as she slammed the haft of her handaxe into his armour and took advantage of his stumbling.

1d20 + 12 + 4 - 4 ⇒ (12) + 12 + 4 - 4 = 24 If hit, Malthir entangled for one round (miss)

1d20 + 12 + 4 - 4 ⇒ (19) + 12 + 4 - 4 = 31 If hit, Malthir entangled for one round (hit)
1d6 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8 Damage (off-hand)

Malthir gains the Entangled condition until the start of Kressle's next round. He is not considered anchored to an immobile object or tethered.

1d20 + 7 + 4 - 4 ⇒ (18) + 7 + 4 - 4 = 25 Hit due to Entangled
1d6 + 11 ⇒ (5) + 11 = 16 Damage (main hand)

1d20 + 7 + 4 - 4 ⇒ (16) + 7 + 4 - 4 = 23 Miss

24 damage for Malthir.

The duel between the Baron and Kardas' new General was a long one, but eventually, Malthir knocked the Hellknight unconcious with the flat of his blade- barely able to stand himself. The crowd seemed please that Malthir had won again but the long and close fight seemed to also meet their approval.

An interlude for healing and refreshments began while the details of the next round were determined.

Baron Malthir VS Kressle-

1d20 + 0 ⇒ (4) + 0 = 4 Malthir init

1d20 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8 Kressle init

Kressle began the fight by hurling an hand-axe at Malthir's legs, but the short hafted weapon merely glanced from his armour. Scowling, Kressle drew another of the many axes she wore on her belt but did not approach him.

1d20 + 13 ⇒ (4) + 13 = 17

Much like the previous armiger she went up against, Kressle utterly decimated Armiger Ursion's defences, pinning his flail to the full plate armour with one handaxe and ramming the haft of her other into his helm over and over. Kressle's defence was not strong and he managed a couple of bruising blows before he yielded.

I'm not actually certain who would win out of Akiros and Hellknight Pellius so i'm going to play that one out...

Kressle's face was grim as she finished watching her husband get beaten to a pulp by the half-orc, but she shook her head.

Nothing Jhod can't fix, i'm sure Kalev. Besides, he already has one sash... I think he'll be satisfied.

I believe that punch put Casimir into unconciousness? That was brutal.

Kressle VS Armiger Tygern-

The armiger was taken by surprise when Kressle hurled the first of her handaxes, tripping the man at range. The skilled ranger descended on the armiger and her axes seemed to work in a blur of motion, striking far quicker than anyone else in the tournament seemed able to. The armiger did his best to get to his feet and work his sword and shield techniques, but he yielded soon afterwards.

Facelift!

Ricter:

It doesn't have a view slit.

Ilgruth attempts to respond but mumbles futilely against the gag. Kressle returns within an hour and a half, covered in dirt and spitting in disgust.

Every single worker down in the tunnels owed Ilgruth money and had been promised riches from the gold vein they were going for; about three dozen in all. They were digging deep, underneath the houses- and straight towards the castle. It looks like they got about halfway there. Theres no doubt in my mind that this is Grigori now; clearly he wanted covert access to the castle. I'm going to go inform Vaysh and get the tunnels filled in.

Ricter:

The crowds back away at the fearsome proclamation. Kressle nods and directs you to the castle instead of the prison, explaining-

That f*#*ing Owlbear smashed up our prison good, its a ruin. Take him to the castle and have Sootscales sent for, he'll find a secure room. I'll join you in a while; i'm going to see what kind of operation the bastard had here. Good work, Ricter.

Ilgruth struggles continually against you while you drag him there, but manacled and gagged his ability to resist is limited. You are eventually accompanied by members of the local watch who assist you by firmly keeping passers by at a distance.

Ricter:

1d20 + 9 ⇒ (16) + 9 = 25
1d6 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6 -6 to above CMB attempt, effective CMB 21

With practiced skill and ease, the man's rapier delicately pokes through one of the armour's joints near your collar and stabs you, blood running down your chest from the wound as you lunge for him. It does not stop you from initiating a grapple with him however.

Snapping out of it a little, Kressle still seems somewhat unsure. Seeing that you have been stabbed however, she continues to use non-lethal methods to try and take him down. Stepping towards the grapple with a set of masterworkmanacles drawn, she manages to just barely get him inside them despite his squirming.

1d20 - 2 ⇒ (19) - 2 = 17 Success (thanks to -2 from grapple)

Clearly trained to escape such a device, Ilgruth attempts to slip out of the manacles but finds them to be finely made and proofed against such a technique.

1d20 + 12 ⇒ (16) + 12 = 28 Escape Artist vs DC35.

1d20 + 15 ⇒ (6) + 15 = 21

His hands now tightly manacled, Ilgruth continues to shout for help; cries that are starting to attract some attention from the passers-by.

Sense Motive DC21 (Ricter):

It was difficult to spot but it was there- a flash of recognition and panic crossed Ilgruth's face for a moment when he spotted Kressle only for the look to turn into a worried grimace when he appeared to recognise your armour...

Ricter:

Stay still you bastard! Kressle roars, as Ilgruth slips away from Ricter. The suddenly fearsome woman takes over where Ricter left off, wrestling Ilgruth up against the wall once more with just as much ferocity.

1d20 + 8 ⇒ (20) + 8 = 28 CMB (success)

Finally recovering enough of his senses to act, Ilgruth slips out of the grapple, drawing a fine looking rapier from his belt and flourishing it threateningly, Ilgruth says-

1d20 + 12 ⇒ (15) + 12 = 27

1d20 + 15 ⇒ (15) + 15 = 30

Who... who are you and what do you want with me? i'm just a humble citizen, please don't hurt me!

His voice is the perfect mix of fear and innocence, his face looking genuinelly confused and scared as his eyes flick between the two of you. He is clearly skilled in the arts of deception- had you not already heard his treacherous plans from his own mouth, you'd be convinced you have the wrong man. Kressle looks suddenly hesitant, however.

Ricter:

1d20 + 8 ⇒ (6) + 8 = 14

You find the building at the appointed time in the evening, and Kressle motions you inside the building opposite. It appears to be a small family shack but the inhabitants are not home. Peering through some moldy shutters, Kressle shows you a good view of number 36.

I persuaded the family to go out for a fine meal this evening, courtesy of my purse. Kressle explains.

You stake out the house opposite for about an hour, continually using Detect Chaos to keep your eye on the street outside. Kressle sees your occasional gestures and muttered words of power from time to time, but if she recognises what you are doing she shows no sign of it except from slight irritation. An hour in, luck appears to be on your side- you sense the familiar presence of chaos and you can see Ilgruth walking across the street, towards the door of number 36. At this hour, the streets here are not particularily crowded, especially as little traffic heads this far into the outskirts of town.

Shall we take him now while he is alone, Hellknight? Try and get hold of him, hes a tricksy bugger if its Grigori... Kressle whispers in excited anticipation.

If you do move to attack/arrest/apprehend him etc. you will have a surprise round on him as he definitely doesn't see you coming. You are limited to either a standard action or a charge (an attack or any combat maneuver that could be used in place of an attacK) in a surprise round.

Rolling Kressle's initiative-

1d20 + 4 ⇒ (11) + 4 = 15

Ricter:

Kressle chuckles when you mention an officer.

Vaysh told me she gave you full authority to pursue Grigori. If you need a piece of parchment to wave in his face though, I can get something drawn up?

I am not a Statkari, but my word carries some weight as the wife of one. Failing that, I can be pretty terrifying when I put my mind to it she says, matter-of-factly. I'll deal with the inhabitants of the building you plan to occupy. Do you want to meet me there two hours before... when did you say they were meeting again?

Ricter Vorsk wrote:

"I am. To prove the value of my order I have taken it upon myself to root out the disorder that has taken root in your fair town. I have discovered a plot to dig a tunnel into the castle. I cannot say what it's purpose is - the man, this so-called Ilgruth, said it was to mine for gold illegally. That smells like lies to me. Whether he is plotting something more insidious or is merely seeking to steal your resources, it matters not. I know he is meeting with his minions in a house within the town tonight. Perhaps the tunnel enterance is there, perhaps he will lead them to it."

Having finished looking over his potential ally, Ricter turns his magical sight on her to check she can be trusted. As he does so he continues.

"I can put Ilgruth to flight myself and end this plot. However, if I am to capture him alive I will need assistance. If fear he may be able to use magic to escape, though if we can corner him in his tunnel...he will be in chains by dawn."

Ricter:

Kressle narrows her eyes a little as you stare at her with your detection, staring back just as intently. You don't detect any aura of chaos upon her though. her head arched back proudly, she looks at you for a few more moments, then asks-

So does this have anything to do with Grigori? Karina implied that you were seeking me out after interviewing her, so I came as promptly as I could. I will still help you, but I don't yet trust you. Your a stranger to our land and to me. You should know that my sister and others know I am meeting you today- if I should have an accident or disappear, they'll know who to look for. Sorry for my plain talk, but Kardas has many enemies who might try such a trick to get to Malthir or my husband. If this is an acceptable alliance between us, I will help you. I've not had a chance to use my axes for many months, and i'm tired of Casimir telling all the tales.

Kressle the Sentinel-

Stoically maintaining her vigil over the Temple of the Elk, Kressle has built herself a small wooden shack next to the temple in which she sleeps- and entertains the Spymaster from time to time. She has not killed another intelligent being in over two years, and she has grown into a deeply religious soul. Rumours are circulating about her applying pressure on Casimir to 'make an honest woman of her'.

Kressle ignores Akiros, walking quickly over to where the Stag Lord lies. Kneeling by his dead body, Kressle stops and kneels beside him for a long time, making her peace with his death. A tear rolls down her cheek, but before she stands up she spits on the corpse, grimacing in mixed emotions as she does so.

I'm going to need to know one major things-

Are the Guardians going to throw the Stag Lord's body into the river for Davik Nettles? Kesten Garess has witnessed the man's defeat so you'll get the reward from the swordlords for sure.

Casimir wrote:

At the Temple, Casimir lets Malthir and Fenna talk to Jhod about the bodies, and instead goes straight to seek out Kressle. He helps out a bit with the work before the two of the have a chance to slip off in private.

Here, he presents her with Breeg's axe.

The previous owner of this axe liked to hurt things for fun. Hopefully, you can put it to better use, my dear.

I think I understand. I'm to use it to hurt bad people for fun, like the Guardians of the Greenbelt do yes? she said, grinning and embracing Casimir. I have a present for you too... she whispered into Casimir's ear...

Kressle smiles and listens intently to you as you speak, nodding along early to indicate she would be interested in staying in the Greenbelt.

I fear for you if you truly intend to face the Stag Lord... But I understand that you must fight for what you believe in. I would love to hear more of Iomedae, I thought all the gods were stuffy old men or whore goddesses like Calistria...

Kressle chuckles as you mention her sister.

I spoke with her and she has backed off for now... But shes clearly still... after your... affections. I'm afraid my sister has always been rather dogged... And with Vaysh having left your group I believe she feels an opportunity will soon present itself...

So, what do you plan to do about it?

In response to Kressle's words, Casimir tightens his grip on her hair and pulls her mouth up into a intense, demanding kiss. He reaches up with his other arm, holding the redeemed bandit woman in a fierce embrace. After a long while, he relaxes his hold and pulls away to look her in the eyes. With a quick glance towards Malthir and the prisoners just a few paces away, he whispers. Well, for one thing, I'm going to make it a point to come by here more often...You still owe me a sparring match, remember?

Indeed I do... Kressle whispers, taking your hand and seemingly leading you around to the back of the temple, where a single fur blanket atop a bedroll has been laid out. It doesn't look like anyone normally sleeps here. Kressle's intentions seem very clear as she roughly shoves Casimir down onto the blanket.

Consider this a prelude to the sparring match... she says with a wicked grin...

Casimir wrote:

Maladin I edited the mercenary's dialogue in light of your edit, in case you don't catch it. Over to Casimir on this post.

Casimir wrote:

The priests who tutored Malthir did an excellent work in instilling piety and moral fiber in him, but when it comes to skill with numbers, it seems they left something sorely lacking.

A total of seven men lie slain in the woods, feeding the wolves and other scavengers, and another we sent running back to the cowardly masters who are behind this plot. But fear not, I will give you a true and proper account of the battle when we are settled.

I see you have done good work here in the time we have been gone. I trust both you and Karina are well - is she back from bringing the radishes to Svetlana? Also, we have several things that Jhod should be told about, if we can pry him away from his busy work.

Yes, Karina delivered the radishes in short order, and Jhod and his men left immediately. We've had a few sightings of trouble in the forest, but me and the wolves scare off anything that gets too close. The wolves scared Jhod's men many times, but they are starting to get used to them. The children love them, they even feed one of them... Oh yes, this is from Svetlana. she says, handing over a small, heavy pouch of coins (250GP).

100XP each for fulfilling that quest.

You and Kressle see to the prisoners bonds, with the exception of the mercenary who Malthir is speaking to. Sensing your need for privacy, Kressle takes your hand and leads you a little into the forest.

So... Did you miss me, Casimir? she asks with a sultry smile, leaning in close. She smells of the woods, of hard honest work, but you suspect Karina has applied some kind of perfume on her sister, masking the scent somewhat... Indeed, Karina is more fearsome than I could ever hope to be on THAT particular field of battle... Perhaps your lordship is interested in her affections?

I've never had any involvement with politics, but the Stag Lord used to say it was akin to dishonest banditry... Kressle mutters. You all sit down and make yourselves comfortable, dinner will be served shortly. I'll handle everything...

You reach the Temple of the Elk by nightfall. Jhod and his small band of followers are already hard at work restoring the temple, although progress seems slow. Kressle intercepts your group as you approach the temple, smiling when she sees you.

Do you ever go out for a sojourn into the forest without bringing something back as a souvenir? she asks.

Malthir Al Dagon wrote:

Malthir will ask Kressle if she thinks the radishes will last another 5-6 days while we look for the Unicorn or if we should run them back now and then search for the creature? He is worried about them spoiling.

Upon inspection, they look to have kept absolutely fine over the last couple of days. Kressle suggests that Karina can run them back to Oleg's though, just in case.

Casimir wrote:

Well, what do you say? It seems you are already feeling at home here. This temple can be rebuilt in time, and Jhod will definitely want to come visit. It would seem suitable if you two camped out here and kept guard over the site until then. You will find plenty of food in the surrounding woods and the fountain provides blessed water. Seems like a fine way to start earning your redemption, keeping watch over a sacred site like this. And don't worry, we'll come and look in on you soon enough.

Worry? Kressle says, arching an eyebrow at you. You of all people should know I am a capable hunter Casimir... And I always catch my prey... she says with a wink.

But your idea has merit, someone will need to guard over Jhod's converts, however capable Jhod himself implies he is... Karina and I will be honoured to watch over this area.

Realising that the group could again be going into danger, Karina runs at an unsuspecting Malthir, throwing her arms around him in a bear hug that Malthir suspects must surely be as ferocious as the cursed Bear would have delivered...

Come back to me safely Malthir... Karina whispers to him, tears running down her cheeks, showing no sign of extricating herself anytime soon...

Kressle chuckles at her sister's antics, rolling her eyes at Casimir...

(So you guys can react if your the only ones online right now ;))

Wait... Whats that sound? Kressle mutters. Sounds like someones dying in the radish patch... she concludes, pointing one of her new hatchets at the centre of the patch.

Vaysh:

Kressle listens to you wordlessly for some time, and you feel she has drawn some comfort from your words.

Thank you for sharing your tale and for being here Vaysh. Allow me to say- I haven't been with your group for long, but you and Malthir are the same gold piece, your just two different faces of it. Justice and Righteous Wrath tempered with Mercy and Compassion. I am fortunate that Brevoy did not send mere brutal killers to the Greenbelt... Karina speaks highly of you all and has been telling me of your deeds.

Kressle smirks for a moment. Three handsome men in your party must be a young farmgirl's dream huh?

Kressle begins to do some complex stretches and begins to run through a martial routine that is obviously very familiar to her, going through it with an intensity that almost frightens you. You sense that although Kressle has submitted to redemption and a trial, if the sentence given is death she would want to go down fighting...

Casimir:

1d20 + 6 ⇒ (14) + 6 = 20I'm not sure your statblock specifies it, but I assume you went Versatile Performance (Oratory).

You sense a lot of confusion amongst the crowd, and many minor arguments have broken out over Kressle, with some like Oleg saying she should hang for her crimes and others arguing she could be a true hero of the Greenbelt if the Guardians were to mentor her. Interestingly, Svetlana appears to be in a different camp to her husband on this issue.

You enter the bunkhouse and you can see Kressle is finishing off some kind of martial routine, ending with a somersault and high kick. She smiles wryly as you enter and announce yourself.

Well, it pays to cover every angle. I heard the roar of the crowd. You must have put on quite a show...

Vaysh probably won't be able to post today I was informed, and Casimir's still on rationed internet time. So Malthir, Edric and Fenna are mostly running the show.

Vaysh wrote:

I doubt that many would be different if their faith were true. That does not mean that those who violate the tenants of law would go unpunished, but instead punished as my beliefs would guide me. I think that all of us would do similar based on our beliefs.

Vaysh listens to the thoughts of the rest of her companions, then bows her head, It seems that Sir Orlavsky and I are outvoted. I hope that I am wrong in my warnings, time will be the judge.

Evening
After finishing what help Svetlana needs for cooking, Vaysh takes two plates to the Guardians’ bunks. She looks to Kressle and says I brought you dinner, I hope that you find it enjoyable. Vaysh gives a weak smile to the other woman, then sits down on her bunk and begins to eat.

After sitting in silence for a short time, more pushing her food around on her plate than eating it; Vaysh looks to Kressle and says, I hope that you do not mind my presence, I have no desire to be out there this night. I plan to spend my night seeking guidance from my patron and see how She advises me.

Kressle smiles gratefully at the food Vaysh brought her.

How ironic... I was just trying to do the same thing... Do you think Iomedae will hear my prayers too? She sounds like a remarkable deity... I had not heard of her in my hometown, but then, she would not have appealed to me until I had to become a strong, independent woman myself... By all means, join me.

Feel free to carry on any RP, I am just making a post detailing the group's tale. Edric you are certainly getting some mileage out of the +3 aid another your order gives you ;).

Kressle remains silent for some time, drinking in your words. When she meets your gaze once more, her eyes are dark and sorrowful.

I would not wish my fate upon anyone... she says, grief heavy in her voice.

Perhaps... Perhaps if I am spared a grim fate in this trial... I could be one of these individuals that helps to make a change? Kressle says, and for a moment she sounds like an innocent child rather than the tough, seasoned woman she is. I wasn't always... So hard to the world... Maybe we can stay here in these lands Karina? The skills the Stag Lord taught me can be used for good ends as well as selfish and evil ones...

No thankyou, Vaysh. I've suffered worse, and my potion healed the majority of my wounds. Kressle replies, blood dripping down her wounds and Tuskgutter's gore all over her arms. As for the forest, i'm sure Tuskgutter's demise will help the forest to flourish- who knows how many animals will be able to flourish without one creature dominating a large section of it. You did what you had to do, don't worry too much about it; this could only have ended with our blood or his. Kressle pauses, and remains silent for a moment, something on the tip of her tongue that she decided not to say.

A few moments later, she then says in a crisp tone-

That was no easy foe. I hope my help worked towards my redemption. Kressle says in a crisp tone.

So... What are your plans now, Guardians of the Greenbelt?

Kressle bows in jest to Casimir, curtsies and offers her handaxes towards him with her head bowed.

My weapons, My Lord... she says, a mocking smile just visible... Realising she is offering them blade extended, she hastily flips them both over in the air, catching both by the blades and offering the handles to Casimir instead.

Edric's Round 3 Action-

Edric you replied to the OOC thread earlier but not the game, i'm going to assume your still a bit short on time.

Wincing in pain from the wound the beast gave him, Edric puts his shoulder into a vicious lunge from his lance and attempts to direct Talia to attack. While the blow from his lance is mighty, the powerful attack leaves Edric off-balance and he is not able to direct Talia to attack.

1d20 + 8 ⇒ (12) + 8 = 20 Attack Roll
1d8 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 12 Damage
1d20 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8 vs DC15

Round 3 Action-

Kressle is inspired and invigorated by a mixture of magical and mundane teamwork- her twin axes are a blur as she hacks into the Boar with them both, hacking into Tuskgutter's hindquarters. Chunks of Boar flesh fly through the trees, but the mighty beast roars in defiance, despite the wounds that must surely be mortal blows now?

1d20 + 9 ⇒ (12) + 9 = 21
1d20 + 9 ⇒ (11) + 9 = 20
1d6 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
1d6 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5

Kressle darts away from the massive beast, fearing his counterattack. As she moves, Tuskgutter punishes her for the blows she struck on him with a vicious counterblow that is swung too late, as she darts away.

1d20 + 8 ⇒ (2) + 8 = 10
2d6 + 9 ⇒ (2, 1) + 9 = 12

The wounded Kressle pulls out a potion and quickly quaffs it while Tuskgutter is distracted attacking Talia.

2d8 + 3 ⇒ (8, 4) + 3 = 15

Vaysh and Malthir are up, and then i'll take Fenna's action.

Malthir Al Dagon wrote:
DM AK would like your ruling on this, if I am fighting defensively for the round, will the bonus apply moving into the attack as well or only after I attack, wondering if it applies to the creatures AOO. I imagine Malthir, with shield and sword in front of him, moving in slowly for a haphazard strike but trying to dance around its great tusks. I re-read fighting defensively, but it isn't 100% clear, just says "You can choose to fight defensively when attacking. If you choose to do so you take a -4 penalty on all attacks in a round to gain a +2 dodge bonus to AC for the same round."

I predicted this question would come up. It won't apply until you make the attack- but it will apply until your next action, so assuming Tusky doesn't switch targets it might help you with his Round 2 action.

Vaysh is able to target Tuskgutter with a Sleep spell without risking her allies... But the beast shrugs off the Spell, refusing to succumb to the magic.

Vaysh:

I usually rule that Spellcaster's know why their spells don't work- in this case Tuskgutter has more than 4HD so he wasn't affected. Bad luck :(

Now Malthir! Kressle yells after Vaysh's spell fails- she darts forward, running at the Boar. Obligingly, Tuskgutter takes a swing for her, goring through her chain shirt with his mighty tusk and grievously wounding her. Defiantly, Kressle swings her fist into the Boar's face, punching the beast right in the eye. Tuskgutter yelps in pain at the bruising the tough ranger gives him.

1d20 + 8 ⇒ (14) + 8 = 22 AOO vs Kressle
2d6 + 9 ⇒ (3, 6) + 9 = 18 Damage
1d20 + 6 ⇒ (11) + 6 = 17 Hit with Unarmed Strike vs Boar
1d3 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5 Non-Lethal Damage on Tuskgutter

Karina screams as the tusk gores Kressle...

Edric & Fenna are up. Malthir, i'll assume your acting just as Kressle distracts the Boar- this means you will be on initiative count 5, just after Vaysh. If you choose to act after Fenna, we'll put you on initiative count 4.

Ah, I see Edric has posted. Just Fenna and Malthir's delayed action.

Kressle is poised to spring into action, crouched and seemingly at home in the forest...

Kressle is on a delayed action.

This may be your last chance to arm me before we find this monstrosity of an animal- allow me to begin my redemption. Your swords may not be enough here.

Edric expertly co-ordinates the group's horses across the dangerous bridge. Talia crosses last, her head held high as though she is on parade. With the natural barrier overcome, Kressle continues to lead the group west across the foothills. She confirms you could use the Thorn river camp ford to cross the river too, but this way led directly into the forest at Tuskgutter's territory. After a few more hours, you reach the edge of the forest, and the site of the attack on the boy. A crude sign has been hammered into the ground that reads-

Warning- Angry Boar

The sign appears to have been gnawed on. There are no tracks easily found here from the attack- time and the recent rain washed them away.

Malthir wrote:

Does the Stag Lord wield any magic other than possible weapons or armor?

No. He has a single magical arrow that he is 'saving' for a special occasion though...

Malthir wrote:

Are there any secret entrances or escape avenues in or out of the Stag Lords keep?

None that I am aware of. There is a single trail leading up to the main gate- i've never seen anyone approach from any other direction.

Malthir wrote:

If no entrances, any thoughts on how we could draw him out or infiltrate the keep since a frontal assault would probably be suicide.

I suppose you could lay siege to it she says flatly. You realise that she is making a joke.Infiltration-wise, your best bet is probably to approach the fort under cover of darkness and scale the walls, or trick the bandits into letting you in. You could claim you are a group of local bandits coming to pay tribute. Bandit's aren't all known by face. Bring alcohol and they are even more likely to let you inside.

Malthir wrote:

What about the bridge at Nettles crossing, did you and your crew use it much? Do you know of a large tree shaped like a claw pointing up into the sky?

We had little reason to use it, but one of the lad's mentioned that the Stag Lord had visited it a couple of weeks ago. I have never seen this tree you speak of.

Malthir wrote:

He thanks her for being so forthcoming with information.

Kressle smiles at your thanks, and you catch Karina scowling at both of you, her eyes smouldering. Kressle quickly makes a hasty excuse about having to keep her eyes on the trail and rides a short distance from you.

Casimir wrote:

Those blue creatures that Kressle describes, sound like Mites, evil Fey who consort with vermin. Distant cousins of your kind, Fenna.

It sounds like the same type of creatures that have been fighting with the kobold tribes. Do you know anything about this, Kressle?

Nothing. My responsibilites lay on the north edge of the forest where heavier traffic passed through. The beasts fled south-east.

The night goes by somewhat awkwardly, with some party members clearly uncomfortable with the newest addition to the group. For her part, Kressle is very quiet, mostly speaking to Karina before sleeping near her.

The next day, the atmosphere is somewhat tense. Riding with Karina, Kressle leads the group south-west for about six miles, quietly catching up with her sister as she leads the way. The weather is awful today- rain pouring down at the group in torrents. Visibility is reduced dramatically by the weather, and bows would be almost useless in the gale force winds.

Malthir asks many questions of Kressle as they make the journey, and Kressle does her best to answer them all.

Malthir wrote:

Is this boar an unusual animal, I mean could it be a magical beast, or just a crafty, large animal?

It's simply a very vicious, old and strong animal. Such strength is worthy of respect; or at least a wide berth. Clearly the animals feel the same way.

Malthir wrote:

We do want to know more about this bandit lord. Maybe that you can tell us what you know about the region as well as this Stag Lord. We have heard rumors that he is some type of fiend or fey?

Kressle smiles a little at this line of questioning, and her voice takes on a soft, wistful quality as she responds.

No one knows for sure. He fights like a Demon though; and he never removes the Stag Helm which covers his face... I believe he is simply a man. A powerful, flawed man; noble in his own twisted way. What in particular did you want to know?

Malthir wrote:

Malthir is worried about her not making it back to Oleg's and thinks it may be a good idea to find out as much as we can about him and his other sergeants as quickly as possible.

The Stag Lord only lets a dozen or so bandits live with him in his fort. Every bandit there is a capable fighter, but three other than the Stag Lord stand out.

Firstly, there is Dovan from Nisroch. He cuts a lean figure and is a dirty fighter- you can recognise him from the black leather he wears, he has something of a leather fetish. He is excessively cruel and enjoys torture above all else.

Secondly, there is Auchs. Auchs is as simple as they come, with the mentality of a child. He is devoted to Dovan- apparently the man saved his life once. He is also massive, bigger and stronger than any of you. He lacks any skill in battle, but his sheer toughness and brutality make up for it...

Finally, there is Akiros. He was a Paladin in Brevoy once, but never speaks of the events that brought him low. He's the newest leutenant, and seems truly unsure of his loyalties sometimes, although he never shows it in front of the Stag Lord. He is the Stag Lord's personal bodyguard, and may be the most skillful warrior in the Fort with the exception of the Stag Lord himself. Akiros might be persuaded to join our side if we could contact him...

Sense Motive DC14:

Kressle's voice softens a lot when she speaks about Akiros, it's clear she cares for him on some level.

Malthir wrote:
Malthir would want to know the location of his stronghold, his strengths, his weaknesses, his men at the stronghold, any spellcasters, when will he think that Kressle has gone missing? What will he do? Will he try to find out why none of his men in the northern Greenbelt have survived? Defenses at this stronghold?

The stronghold is an old fort on the northern shore of the Tuskwater lake. The Stag Lord's only true weakness is his alcohol habit. He is... an alcoholic, and Dovan uses this to gain some semblance of control over him. There is a single spellcaster in the fort who handles the men's healing... But he is kept below the fort in the dark, the Stag Lord's prisoner. He already knows I am 'missing'. One of the bandits survived their misguided attack on me and fled south. He is difficult to predict in his cups... But I suspect any armed response will be slow to muster.

Kressle leads the group to the Thorn river, and a rickety bridge with a small path leading to it between two hills. Holding up her hand to signal a halt, she explains the danger of the bridge to the group.

The bridge will only support one or two of us at a time, and only one horse at a time. It will be too risky to lead the horses alongside someone- perhaps one of you will be able to call the animals across the bridge once you have crossed?

This will require handle animal checks, and a plan ;)

EDIT: Please read.

When asked about Svetlana's ring, Kressle winces.

Our camp had a run-in with some thieves, small ugly humanoids, blue and with oversized heads... I have no idea who or what they were but they stole several bags of loot before we saw them- Svetlana's ring was amongst these possessions.

Knowledge Nature, Planes or Arcana DC15:

Kressle is describing Mites, a small and ugly type of Fey. Vicious and usually evil, the Mite's are somewhat frail but have an innate resistance to ordinary weapons and an uncanny ability to communicate and work with vermin, usually centipedes.

Like Gnomes, they originally came from the First World, and have a distant connection to Gnomes.

Have you or any of your men met this forest lord? It is a large boar they have also named Tuskgutter. I believe his hunting grounds are west of here. You mentioned that the Stag Lord taught you of the wilds, would you be willing to help us track the beast? It may help you at your trial if you had helped their community in some way.

We are also searching for a Unicorn that inhabits the western part of the Narlmarches, have you heard anything of this creature or maybe seen
it?

I will help in any capacity I can. I have a lot of information that could be useful to you concerning the Stag Lord and his bandits. I am particularily skilled in the forests, and I am a competent tracker. The Unicorn I have never seen, but this Boar I know. We steer clear of his territory. He is a formidable creature.

Malthir Al Dagon wrote:

Kressle, it is good you have come to us in peace, we hope that it will lead to your salvation. Under the eyes of Iomedae and Erastil, you will be judged for your crimes, whatever they may be. It may be that you have a role to play in these lands, but for now you are our prisoner until we get back to Oleg's. Once there you will admit any and all crimes you have committed, and with input from the folks of the Greenbelt, you will be judged for your crimes. You will be treated well and no one is going to try and kill you unless your crimes merit that severe a punishment. We appreciate the offer of your blades, but you will not be allowed to hold onto your weapons until after we get back to Oleg's and your innocence or guilt established.

Can we have your word that you will not try to escape us? Trying to bind and watch you will be too difficult as we will be off tomorrow morning to face the forest lord.

You have my word. My sister is alive, and this changes everything.

Kressle pauses, indicating her wounds.

It may interest you to know the surviving bandits from the River Camp turned on me. Those particular men will no longer be a problem for you.

Malthir:

You feel Kressle is both ashamed of her actions towards the group, and overjoyed to find her sister alive. She also seems sincere as she speaks to you all- and willing to seek redemption.

Kressle stands in the centre of the camp, still a somewhat commanding presence despite her circumstances. She stands and looks at you all in turn, and then begins to make her case.

My father, Karina and I were attacked on the way into Brevoy many months ago by bandits. I got seperated from my sister after watching our father die, and I assumed Karina suffered the same fate. I was brutally beaten, and about to be raped by these highwayman- when the Stag Lord marched onto the roadside.

Kressle's eyes take on a dream-like quality for a moment as she continues.

He walked fearlessly onto the roadside, a tall, noble warrior- wearing a helm that covered his face, with Stag Antlers protruding from the top. As I saw him I imagined he was a mighty champion of Erastil, coming to save me. He challenged the brigands, slaying three with his bow and another three with his longsword- they were no match for him, and his prowess was... magnificent. He carried me over his shoulder to his campfire- and at my sobbing request, he left to check on my father and sister. He came back, and told me they had both died.

Kressle glances at Karina for a moment-

This was many months ago. I know now that he had lied. I am not sure why. Perhaps he saw potential in me, or perhaps he had always wanetd a daughter of his own- but I swallowed the lie.

I had nothing. I had no family remaining. No home. Few possessions. Nothing but burning hate in my heart.

The Stag Lord nurtured that hate, finding opportunities to fan the fires of my rage. He took me to his new stronghold in the Greenbelt. Trained me in the ways of battle, stealth and the wilds- gave me weapons, armour, a warm fire... And comrades. They may have been rough, but when they first tried to touch me the Stag Lord cut off the hand of the man who tried. He was like a father to me, and the only one I had left. When he asked me to manage the Thorn River Camp, I was proud to repay him in any way I could for all he did for me. Now that I know he lied to me about my sister... That has tainted him in my eyes. And I have failed him. He will not forgive my failure.

So... That is my tale. I offer no battle, but if you try and take my life I will fight for it; weapons or no. My axes are yours to command if you wish me to fight for your cause. If you can forgive me, Karina and I would like to help with the settling of these lands, in whatever role you deem suitable.

I have surrendered willingly, and all that I did was to survive and thrive in the Stag Lord's harsh world. I had no other choice.
