Tarren the Dungeon Master wrote: The plan is working beautifully so far. I'll need some climb checks for those descending the hole. Miss on DC 15 climb check; make a DC 20 climb check or slide to the bottom for 1d6 points of damage. Unless, of course, you brought a rope. I cast Spider climb on myself and my companions. 2 prepared spells and 1 school power. I move along as quietly as I can, but stealth isn't necessarily something I'm skilled at, being as I am more accustomed to moving in and killing the foe before they have a chance to react. Fortunately, I'm hoping that any undead in the area won't be able to see me anyway. My life is in the divine hands of a heathen orc-blood's spellcasting ability, I think to myself with some chagrin, Hru's a stout fighter and all, but I hope this spell of his works... I have 9 silver pieces. So who are we waiting on? Does everyone know their part in the plan. If the hide from undead spell works on three, I advise saving the potions for later. I cast Mage Armor on myself as we prepare to leave. "Hru," I say, "cast your spell ta 'ide us 'n we'll be givin' the first team a sixty second head start. Don't ferget ta be lightin' torches first..." I assume we were able to fashion torches for each of us? I now have a magical hammer that does well against goblins. And I have crossbow bolts. I'll let Kamris have the remainder of my normal bolts and I'll keep my silver and magical bolts. Rellios: I can cast magic weapon on the rapier after we descend into the earth. What exactly is needed with the armor? My Spells for the day are,
I realized last night I can't cast Disrupt undead as its one of my prohibited schools and will mess up my other abilities. I can't post much till later today, but I think myself and the two elves in one group, sneaking, and the rest in a forward assault group, armed with torches, is a good plan. I'm not sure the benefit of having heavier armour is offset by waiting and allowing the vampire to acquire more minions. Also , I think that my group should carry unlit torches and some oil if we have any. In response to Orlan, "While I think that it would be good ta 'ave the two elflin's form their own team, it might be that yer right that I should be in the other party. Exceptin' I'm not after bein' as good as they are at bein' quiet 'n sneaky. But I did 'ear Hru mention something about a divine spell ta be makin' the fiend pay no attention ta us. Two potions 'n a spell might be gettin' three of us past 'im. I think the lass should be stayin' wit' the assault group though." I ponder Yin's words for a moment and then respond, "I can't be sayin' what a creature like this blood drinker would be distracted by, but I would tend ta favor a swift approach meself, with Rellios and even Kamris 'ere, sneakin' down that crack a ways as Rellios 'as said. There's after bein' two o' those potions, right? I can be givin' 'em both a spider crawlin' spell 'n as soon as we attack, down they go. That'll get them away from that flail o' 'is 'n also cuttin' off 'is retreat. Iffin we 'it 'im 'ard 'n 'it 'im fast there may not even be enough o' 'im ta run." I don't have a lot to contribute to vampire lore in character, but piecing together our experiences so far, I think we could agree that this vampire...
Reviewing the facts, I make some suggestions. "I think we are after needin' to be ready fer both the fiend's bats 'n 'imself. Afore we go ta confront 'im, I suggest we be lightin' torches fer 'is bats. The knight 'n Hru should be takin' the lead, followed by me 'n Orlan, 'n then by the girl with those of elflin' blood comin' last." "When we see 'im, those as are 'avin' some religious power can be unleashin' it first. I got some spells as are good fer 'is kind 'n no doubt the girl does too. Those wit' silver weapons can be 'ittin' 'im wit' them 'n the rest can attack wit' torches or enchanted blades. That crossbow might be a right good weapon iffin' there's anybody thats after bein' a sharp-shooter amongst our little number." "The problem comes when 'e's after fleein' back into his crack. I can be followin' pretty quickly, I think, but some o' you might want ta be bringin' a rope ta make it easier on yerselfs." At the evening meal that night, I stand and deliver a toast, "Ta all that 'ave fought well wit us' I salute ye!" "The treasures ye 'ave found thus far, keep as yer own, exceptin' that ye think another might use better. That was the deal I was after makin' wit my comrades 'n its only fair fer all." "We 'ave found the throne o' the dwarves 'n a mighty fine throne it is. Iffin yer listinin' o throne, I name ye Grand Advisor 'n Senschal ta the lands o' the throne." "Iffin' there's any that are wantin' ta be leavin', we'll be understandin' 'n just one favor would I be askin'. That any who leave carry a letter wit' them to Janderhoff fer us." Sir Manfred VonFalkenburg wrote: Didn't you guys find a magic Helm and Shield as well? Did you ever find out what they were all about? Not that I'm interested in such things... Yes and yes and of course not. :) They're dwarven heirlooms. When the time was right, I was going to offer my cousin the use of the shield if he wanted it. (a +1 shield) "So cousin, do ye need a shield?" A quick Synopsis of Flanking: "Aye, cousin," I exclaim suddenly, "I fergot ta be tellin' ye but aside from the throne, we were after findin' yet another great treasure in this spire. The 'Anvil o' Gyr' do be restin' on the ferge level, 'n a pretty little thing its after bein' too I can tell ye. Ferged Hru' sword wit' it in next ta no time." Tarren the Dungeon Master wrote: Clareg even referred to you as 'Your Majesty' once. ;-) I did, in fact, catch that. I just figured he was overly anticipating the results of finding the throne. "Iffin we had some sort o' thin 'n small person, we could be sendin' them down the 'ole. Dependin' on 'ow deep it was, I could perhaps send a flaming sphere rolling down it..." What happened last time you guys tried to go after him into the hole? Hru Gorumgrag wrote: CLW x3 (1d8+1=4, 1d8+1=3, 1d8+1=4) well that's 11, but not super dice wise Don't forget it's +1/level of cleric. Should be 17, not 11. :) With some amusement, I adopt a dramatic tone and say, Spoiler:
"Wisest of thrones, better a counselor that advises caution then one that knows none. Now good Orlan, you have heard the throne speak words of approval at your speech. Let us forgive the slight and tend to your companions." I add a moment later, Spoiler:
"Out of curiousity, my good throne, how far from the throne room can you be heard?" Taking the throne, I listen carefully to what the throne has to say and then I speak aloud in dwarven, Spoiler:
"You are a most wise throne, a bedrock of experience, but I trust Orlan quite well. Not all kin are beardless and oaths would not keep unstable kin from lying."
"Listen Orlan, the throne can speak. It has had some bad experiences, the previous regent murdered the king, raped his sister, the dowager queen, and caused the fall of these spires. Now that it is observing you, it wants you to publically renounce the throne." I smile some as I say, "Of course it is necessary to have a heir and if I went around making all my kin renounce the throne there would be anarchy among the subjects, such as they are. Then there might likely be another five hundred years of desolation in these spires." Sir Manfred VonFalkenburg wrote: Sir Manfred muses aloud; "Are you all short of food here? I guess we should have brought a couple of casks of that wine we found in the lair..." "We're not after bein' short o' food at the moment, though I'll not be lyin' when I say that extra mouths won't be 'elpin'. We spent a goodly portion o' time stockin' a larder so ta speak. That 'n fergin' a sword fer the orc-blood who misplaced 'is own fer a time." For the DM: Spoiler:
From a classical perspective, I would say the running water has to be both above ground and too wide to step across. Running water from a hose, for instance, would not work. Generally the vampire should be unable to fly around it, but if he flew far enough up stream, or down stream, he might be able to find a place where he could hire somebody to carry him across. If he cannot fly over it, then it is entirely probable he could not cross it on a bridge either, but I suspect bridges are nebulous territory.
Having said that, for some reason I can't help but remember a line from Saberhagen's "An Old Friend of the Family," in which Vlad comments (words to the effect) after tearing apart a thug that the man had some education because he tried to run across a stream but unfortunately his education was all wrong. What is true in one man's vampire lore is always wrong in anothers. I would suggest we allow the newcomers to the thread to rest and level and then apply ourselves to killing the vampire. That will completely clean out two out of the four spires. Also, if we do that, we might think of a way to send word for merchants and dwarves to visit the spires to help us restock supplies and such. I retort to my cousin, Spoiler:
"Cease to follow Torag! That would be a miserable day indeed. Surely I have not been away from my clan so long as to fall so low in your estimation. And asides..." I laugh, Spoiler:
"If you continue to talk that way, the throne of the dwarves will have words for you. It has greeted me as king, though whether that was for reasons of noble lineage or just because I was the first bearded son of the forge it was seeing in five hundred years I'll leave to you to decide." "So then cousin, you say the fiend still lives. We can perhaps devise a way to fix that. Do you and your companions need food and rest. All that my kingdom has to offer you is at your disposal." I grin. "Ach," I say a second later, "Where are my manners? The orc blood be'ind me is Hru," I add in dwarven, Spoiler:
"He is a heathenish sort of priest, but a good warrior and given time might be shown the light at the end of the tunnel." "N' the other is Rellios, an elflin' as ye can be seein'. E's after bein' 'andy wit' locks. I met them both at the fort down the river n' they've been good chaps, 'oldin' up in 'ere as we were." "Our adventure 'as been 'avin' its 'igh 'n low points," I say to Orlan, when the embracing is done, and with some excitement I add, "The good news is, I've found the throne, 'n by its word claimed the spires once more fer dwarf folks. We 'ave this spire pretty well ta ourselves 'n was about ta be branchin' back ta finish off the blood-suckin' villain in that there spire be'ind ye. I don't suppose ye did me the favor o' that yerself?" I scan the three that enter with Orlan and scratch my beard in thought a moment. In dwarven I add to my previous question, Spoiler:
"And who are these beardless ones who have traveled with you? And I hope you brought nourishment? Otherwise we shall have to mine some more from the land below the spires..." "A dwarf!" With a start, I leap from the throne and move quickly down the stairs. I assume that Hru and Rellios will follow. Moving past the webs and towards the barred door, I call out, in dwarven, Spoiler:
"Who is it that knocks on the doors of the Halls of the Foehammers?" All this assuming they don't break in first. :) As to the picture, it looks too small to be a llama. My guess would be an Alpaca, though I have never seen one after its been shaved. Did you go to a zoo? "I say we be waiting near the stairs goin' up ta the throne room. Iffin' its hobgoblins, or gobs or such we can be attackin' them from a distance 'n then fallin' back if need be ta the throne. Or I could just be askin' the throne first who they are..." Moving quickly to the throne, I sit down and say, Spoiler:
"Well most trusted of advisors, I need you to be utilizing your formidable skills so that I know how many are attacking at the door?" "So the jewel's are after bein' settled then. I say we be lookin' at the garrison. If there be threats there that are beyond the work of a few minutes, we can pull back and reinforce our backsides." "So Elflin' do ye be wantin' ta walk the webs with arcane assistance or are ye after trustin' in yer own skill?" Rellios can take a rope across the web tunnel and anchor it on the other side. Whether he uses my spider climb spell is up to him. Tarren the Dungeon Master wrote: For the record, there sits on the left arm of the throne, a bracelet studded with dark opals (300gp value); fallen to the base on the right side is a silver scepter with a emerald embedded in the head (1000gp value); an assortment of gold chains have fallen to the seat (750 gp value). Went back and remembered these items. As a new scheme... Instead of 2 amber stones each. I volunteer to keep the scepter. One of you gets the bracelet, six amber stones (100 gp each), and 2 garnets worth 50 gp each (from my pouch). Another gets the chains and 5 garnets from my pouch. Seem fair?
