Submission Q&A:
Defining Characteristics
Throughout his life, Khyrn has demonstrated a capacity for persistence and determination, as well as a tendency to fully concentrate on the task at hand. Since attaining his standing in the church, Khyrn has begun to understand the concepts of leadership in the face of tyranny, as well as how his faith in Heironeous can in and of itself be an inspiration to the less fortunate or those living under the fist of oppression.

Family in Diamond Lake
Khyrn’s parents are Arden and Lithia Lossen, and they have both lived in Diamond Lake for their entire lives. He also has older identical twin brothers, Dreyn and Foell. Arden, Dreyn, and Foell are all blacksmiths who work for Manlin Osgood at the village smithy. Lithia is a locally famous chef at the Rusty Bucket.

Why does Khyrn want to leave Diamond Lake?
After the death of the previous high priest in Diamond Lake, and the relatively recent arrival of the new High Justice, Khyrn has started wondering about the wisdom of the messages given to the flock. While he cannot point to any specific problem with what the High Justice says or does, Khyrn has started having an uneasy feeling about the direction of the small chapel in Diamond Lake. But with his background in the church and the militia, Khyrn has started considering a transfer to another location, or simply taking the road out of town to see where it leads.

Also, tell me why you want to play this particular AP.
The main reason I am interested in playing this AP is for the opportunity for one of my characters to stand against one of the most mysterious forces of evil in Greyhawk canon. From what I understand, the story in this campaign is really one in which the fate of the world hangs in the balance, and I am excited about joining other like-minded players in order to create a diverse and resourceful party dedicated to defeating Kyuss and his minions.

Character Background:

Khyrn Lossen has spent his entire life in Diamond Lake. His father and twin brothers work for Manlin Osgood at the smithy in Diamond Lake, while his mother is a cook at the Rusty Bucket. Ardan was one of the most talented smiths at Osgood’s Smithy, but he knew he did not possess the business savvy of Manlin. Additionally, Manlin had agreed to accept the twins, Dreyn and Feoll, as apprentices, allowing them to learn from both him and their father. For those reasons, despite his skill, Ardan remained with Manlin while many other smiths left for other jobs at the first opportunity.

Khyrn accompanied his father to the smithy for many years as a “junior apprentice”, something Manlin permitted since the rest of his family could be depended upon to keep the young boy out of trouble, and out of the way. As Khyrn continued to get closer to his age of apprenticeship, Manlin realized that he would not have enough work or income to support another apprentice. But the smithy owner was not the type of person to turn away the son of an employee as dependable and loyal as Ardan Lossen. Manlin visited his cousin, Dax, a sergeant in the local Greyhawk garrison. Dax told Manlin that the militia in Diamond Lake was too small to accept trainees, but the chapel of Heironeous was always looking for hard-working acolytes. Even if Khyrn decided to leave the church once he came of age, he would still learn many skills that typical apprentices missed, subjects such as reading, writing, philosophy, religious studies, history, and math. Not to mention the martial training he would receive in the service of Heironeous. The High Priest was supportive when asked, having worked with Manlin for many years to ensure his Templars were outfitted in the best gear Diamond Lake had to offer. When Manlin presented the opportunity to Ardan, he readily jumped at the chance.

Khryn, however, was less enthusiastic. He saw this more as a punishment and less as an opportunity. It took several days of moping before Ardan pulled Khyrn aside and had a stern fatherly chat with his son. Somehow, he was able to penetrate the thick pre-teen skull of Khyrn and finally convinced him that the smithy could not support any more people, and that if he hated the church, he could always try to join the smithy in a few years. Still doubtful about the situation, but without the self-pity and immature behavior, Khryn agreed to give the church a chance and accept the acolyte position.

The first few years were difficult for Khyrn between the physical training and academic classes. Throughout his early years, the senior acolytes were strongly supportive of both his persistence and dedication to his lessons. Over time, Khyrn finally began to adapt to, and even enjoy, the training. As he approached the end of his acolyte term, Khyrn was offered the chance to continue in the church as a senior acolyte. If he accepted, he would be dedicating himself to Heironeous for the next several years, and he would be accepting the responsibility to act as an instructor to the new acolytes who would come after him. After a day of reflection and prayer, Khyrn agreed to accept the position. His family, and Manlin Osgood, happily attended his promotion ceremony, and all congratulated him for the success he had achieved.

During his time as a senior acolyte, Khyrn began the study of divine magic in earnest, proving a very capable student. He also spent more time with the holy weapons of Heironeous, eventually settling on the battle axe instead of the longsword as his tool of choice. After three more years, he was granted the title of Blessed Justice, the first rank of a full priest in the church. Since that time, Khyrn has served the chapel in Diamond Lake faithfully and with fervor, striving to be an example, and learning how to be a better brother to his fellow priests, and a better minister to the laymen of the congregation.

Several years ago, the old high priest, Amon Kyre, died in mysterious circumstances. Since then, Khyrn has felt a strange uneasiness around Diamond Lake. He has tried to identify the cause, to no avail. After numerous conversations and prayers with the current High Justice, Valkus Dun, Khyrn has determined that Heironeous is trying to lead him out of Diamond Lake and into the larger world. Such callings are common in the church of Heironeous, and Dun has granted both his permission and blessing for Khyrn to begin his journey. But as much as the young cleric wishes to serve his God and church, he is nervous about leaving the only home he has ever known, as well as the family that he would leave behind.
