Background:

Deep within the forested land of Hochland, nearly at the foot of the Middle mountains, lie the village of Stökse. This small village is the home of loggers and hunters and lives out of the surrounding woodlands. Katrina was born 22 years ago, only daughter but fourth child of Otto and Klara, in a well established family of carpenters. One of the few skilled craftsman of the village, Otto is the envoy of a carpentry guild in Hergig, the provincial capital. Up in the mountains, he selects the trees to be felled down, direct the logging and makes sure of the quality of the wood brought by the guild. Resentful, as his position in the middle of nowhere was the result of an internal feud in the guild, Otto was a harsh father and taskmaster, expecting immediate obeisance and trying to direct everyone's life around him. As she was ten, her mother died, victim of a strange illness that turned her skin black within two days. At that time, Katrina was spending as much time as possible out of the house, in the woods. There, alone, most of the time, as her father position was the most efficient friends' repellent, she could explore, follow animal tracks or learn to shoot with a makeshift bow. With her mother's death, her father turned even more to his work and to the education of his elder sons, leaving Katrina in the hands of a village maid that was too happy not to see her at all.

As her brothers grew up and were sent back to town to perfect their education and learn a trade, her father's eyes eventually fell on her. Horrified by the way her daughter had turned, he decided to seclude her and send for a proper tutor for her. That was the first and last straw and Katrina could not bear to be kept inside. As soon as she could, she eloped and decided to try to live alone in the forest. The first winter was so harsh she almost died of starvation as she caught a strong case of pox that left her unable to hunt for days. But she survived and grew stronger, honing her skills with the bow and learning new ways to track her preys.

Expecting her to come back home half-starved, her father grew angrier and by pure spite, tried to drive her out. He used up all his influence to prevent merchant from buying her pelts or the venison she killed and eventually tried to span rumours of his daughter turning into a witch. Afraid he would be believed, she packed her belongings and left the village without resistance. She trusted herself enough to survive on her own, despite the odds. In the following five years, she kept moving, exploring the forests of the empire and honing her skills. Now, having heard that a master bowman was ready to teach his art in the good city of Nuln, she has once again packed her belongings and taken a new road, hopefully towards knowledge and fame.
