Owly wrote: I'd like to add that this pretty much curtails the "Magic Mart" mentality in the game if used correctly; each village, town, city etc. has [THIS RESULT] for sale. "Want Pearls of Power? Well WE AIN'T GOT 'EM! Come back next week!" "Need a scroll of Remove Curse in a hurry? Sorry pal! I'll check in the back though...! Ohh..I have one left. This is your lucky day!" Exactly! Never again will my players (or yours) be unsure of what is in town. If under the GP limit, a simple 75% d100 roll will tell. If over, *click*, check the list. Simplicity, accessibility, and ease of use has driven my site so far, and it is my fondest hope that this tool follows suit.
I've received a number of asks for this, so I'm proud to announce that the Random Treasure Generator (updated with UE) I've been promising for so long is finally live. So far I've included five different types of generation, but more can be pretty easily added as the needs arise. All areas use Ultimate Equipment for the various available treasures. Otherwise... City Treasure: Uses the Core Rulebook/Gamemastery Guide rules for what magic items are available in the various sized communities.
As a plus, the value of everything is displayed with the item, along with other miscellaneous information (does the weapon glow?). I am still missing a few other bits that could go in, which I would like to address later. There is a percentage chance that a weapon/armor could be made of a special material, which right now doesn't happen (with the exception of specific items in the Specific Weapon/Armor tables, like mithril shirt). Additionally, while the tool will let you know if an item should be Intelligent, it won't do any other leg work. I couldn't find a decent table to fully generate an Intelligent item (the ones in the Core book and UE do have some random tables, but not for everything, like statistics). Of course, I may have just been blind and missed some obvious bits for it. In any event, that part will be in later. Otherwise, all items/spells/etc. should be fully hyperlinked to their respective entries in the Archives. If something isn't linking properly or otherwise broken, please let me know! This is definitely one of the larger projects I've worked on, and while I have done a lot of testing there is always something one person can miss. Enjoy! Archives of Nethys - Random Treasure Generator Note: Unlike my previous generator, a Windows-based program, this tool is on my website and should be available to you regardless of your OS (I hope). :)
I was reminded that the older link for this is no longer available, so re-uploaded it. Though a newer generator is in the works (using UE), you can find the old one below (announcement copied from site):
Quote: If you ever used my Random Item Generator and lost it, or never did but would like to try it, then good news for you! I’ve re-uploaded it to my site and it can be found here. Please note that while this should work on most Windows systems, I am unsure on how well it would work with a Mac setup (if at all). I *am* working on a new generator that will utilize the Ultimate Equipment tables though, and be available on this site as a web-based application. So... look forward to that! ;)
Right, that is because I didn't have Grand Discoveries pulled out as their own category yet, I think this is the first new one we've had. It's in the database, just not showing up. I'll work on fixing this today. Thanks for reminding me! :)
The content gets posted in the Archives as soon as I receive it via my subscriptions, which is at the same time the physical copies are shipped. Considering any subscriber has a copy, I wasn't too concerned with other 'street dates'. That said, I've never heard of them to begin with, at least in regards to making use of the Community Use Policy. I'm also not an official Paizo spokesperson in this regard, so may not be the best person to ask. As pointed out, your site is commercial now, which may have different rules.
Steve Geddes wrote: This sounds like a great email conversation to me. Agreed. Jreyst, if you want to discuss this more, go ahead and shoot me a mail using asknethys@karuikage.net. This thread should probably be for any questions or concerns surrounding the initial announcement's content.
The new releases from April have been uploaded to the Archives. All new material currently marked as PFS Illegal until "Additional Resouces" on Paizo are updated with the new books (except for Ultimate Equipment, which has the correct information). Speaking of which, Ultimate Equipment is finally complete! That massive book is all in the Archives and ready to be viewed. Lastly, the site has undergone a much needed facelift! Please let me know what you think about the new design, whether good or ill. Enjoy! Main Page - Archives of Nethys New Additions

Whether in my online forum game or my in person game, I've always used the maps from the PDFs for a digital display (flat TV in my in person game). I am always happy when people re-do AP maps in a more detailed style, especially when I happen to be running that AP at the time. As a GM who just started the RotRL in a PbP game... THANK YOU. So very very much. These are fantastic.
Awesome. Thanks for checking. My confusion was what you figured out, the new stones fell right after the Advanced Ioun Stone 'category', and could be seen as being part of it. Going to go under the assumption that the new stones are allowed and the 'crafting' part you quoted is what is disallowed.
The Additional Resources says that "Advanced Ioun Stones", from Seeker of Secrets, are not legal for PFS Play. Is that referring to the small paragraph concerning their crafting, or the larger list of new Ioun Stones immediately following it (amber spindle, crimson sphere, etc.). This is for properly tagging the new Ioun Stones on the Archives of Nethys. If it's just the crafting portion that is illegal, then I can mark all these new stones as legal. If the "Advanced Ioun Stones" label covers those new stones as well, then I need to mark them as illegal. :) Any help is appreciated. I am leaning towards it just being the crafting rules, but want to be sure.
Pretty great idea, Misroi. I am gonna lean that route, pushing him towards making friends. I also think I may tie Jubrayl in to the goblin raid. After all, we know that Spoiler: was really who helped smuggle the goblins in, but who else are good smugglers? Seems like the old man may have gone to the Sczarni for help, as much as it pained him.

I recently started running a PbP Rise of the Runelords game, and one of the players provided me an interesting opportunity. He went with a Chaotic Good Varisian rogue, and wanted to play a kind of 'black sheep' guy within Sandpoint. Someone who started out in a bad place but could rise up when given the chance. I immediately thought of the Sczarni and Jubrayl Vhiski. The local gang seemed like the perfect thing for this character (Jaliston) to fall into. His background paints Jal as a relatively good egg, but caught in fights and learning pressure points (sneak attack) to get out of them. Jubrayl recruited him when Jal was still 10 or so (18 as of RotRL) and brought him in as a 'talker'. Jal's player went full ranks in Diplomacy, good Charisma, and the Silver Tongued human trait. The idea being that Jal is sent to talk various businesses into allowing themselves to fall under Jubrayl's control, or at least make payments for Sczarni protection. Now, Jal is still CG because he is somewhat of an idealist. He doesn't really know the darker sides of Jubrayl (yet) and genuinely believes the Sczarni can help protect the various businesses of Sandpoint from the seedier elements (heh). Still, part of him knows that what he is doing is wrong. ANYHOW, background over. As the plot currently stands, the PCs have fought back the goblins and are enjoying the new fame and hero-status given by the town. Jal is a bit unsure about this, part of him wants to use this to get out of what he has fallen into. He is making his way to the Feedbag to talk to Jubrayl and get his opinion on things. So, all that said: What would Jubrayl do? This is an NE leader of a Sczarni gang, and Jal is one of his best speakers. How can he manipulate this? Have Jal use his hero status to convince the shops in town that the goblins may strike back, and they'll need the Sczarni's help? That'd work alright, but I'm wondering if it could be more... diabolical. Any ideas you guys can suggest would be great. Sorry for the lengthy post.

Mike did alert me to this thread, which inspired me to finally get around to updating my Deities list. Tracking the various deities was something I didn't decide to do until I was already a good 100 books into my updates (technically the second time around, since I re-did everything for the new SQL-based system), so I was missing a deal of information. Thanks to Dragnmoon for his help in compiling the books I needed to go through. It made updating things a lot quicker. The site now has a full list of the various deities mentioned in the books, along with the Sources listed and PFS-Legal markers. Something that was already on the site, but worth mentioning, is the Domains section. Found in the Cleric area, this lists all the Domains/Subdomains and every deity which can grant it. The deities are mentioned in the individual domains as well (eg: Destruction)
The new releases from February have been uploaded to the Archives. Additionally, I have restructured the way the Classes area flows. When navigating to that area, you will see that there are three categories now: PC Classes, Pet "Classes", and NPC Classes. Pets include Companions (Animal/Vermin), Eidolons, and Familiars. Any relevant information related to them can now be found there. This includes the until-now missing construction rules for the three pets, some new archetypes (thanks to Animal Archive) and more. In regards to melee vs. ranged, this is something I was a bit unsure about when placing this particular enhancement in the Archives. The only example of its use was on a melee weapon (Shadowcount Sial's spiked chain). Not sure which NPC was using it on a crossbow, the Cinderlander (main NPC with a crossbow) does not have that property on it. Based on the text, it allows the wielder to use Wisdom instead of Strength, and talks about modifications for two-handed or off-hand weapons. This pointed more towards a "Melee only" quality than both. Quote: A guided weapon may be wielded as a normal weapon, using Strength to modify attack and damage rolls... As it was (and still is not) legal for PFS, I was satisfied with storing it as a melee quality. It is debatable if that was the intent, but individual GMs can allow it for ranged if they wish (though with the Zen Archer, I strongly advise caution... heheh). Personally, I feel as if it is *far* too strong of a quality to allow for a +1, especially on ranged weapons. It's already pretty amazing as a +1 for a melee-themed cleric.
That may have just been a mistake of mine. Change whip to any other monk weapon, preferably one that keeps the Trip ability. The Nine-Section Whip would work perfectly with her.
It's from Ultimate Magic. You can see it here. I was a bit off in that it doesn't replace bombs entirely, but it does make them less effective.
Well, I started writing pregens and got up through Father Carras before I said "man, hell with this, I need to find out which five they want to play as first instead of just writing up ninteen". So to help them pick, I wrote mini-backgrounds for all the characters and gave them out to the players. Each has a reason (sort of in some cases) to be investigating Castle Ravenloft. The creativity isn't great, I know, but I can only say "you want to kill a vampire" so many ways, haha. Also, lots of dhampirs. D and Alucard were obvious, but I had Elizabeth in mind for one as well so she could take the various blood drinking feats. Ah well. Enjoy!
Jason Voorhees
Elizabeth Bathory
The Headless Horseman
Father Karras
Willard
D
Ash
Van Helsing
Alucard
Buffy
Alessa Gilespie
Roland Deschain
Geralt of Rivia
Norman Bates
Carrie
Old Wizard Whately
Maharet/Mekare
Randall Flagg
As I pointed out above, the Alchemist has a "Reanimator" archetype. This replaces bombs with the ability to alchemically create undead. :) And remember, in the end, I'm not creating *exactly* these guys as pregens. I am making pregens *inspired* from them. Hence the headless horseman as a halfling wearing a pumpkin on his head instead of an all out ghost. Or Jason Vorhees as a mute sanity-lacking barbarian instead of some crazy spirit of vengeance.
Piccolo wrote: Whoof! First off, taking a Cavalier into Ravenloft is suicide. You DO realize most of the game takes place INSIDE the castle, right? How are you gonna maneuver a Large creature in there?! Horses don't DO spiral staircases, you know. Oh, I'm aware. I've run this before, and have read the module thoroughly. Truth be told, I don't expect the Cavalier to be picked, but I wanted to make one pregen for each class. On the plus side, I liked the idea of doing "The Headless Horsemen" as a somewhat unhinged halfling with a pumpkin on his head. A small cavalier on a medium mount can easily maneuver around the castle. Piccolo wrote:
This is why I went with the suggestion to make him an Inquisitor. Wise, monster lore, judgments, etc. Works perfectly. Piccolo wrote: Third, I have a huge book of HP Lovecraft, the fancy sort of binding. Cost me a pretty penny, and I can assure you that Herbert West is no Alchemist. He didn't drink potions, and didn't toss bombs. He would be closer to a straight up Necromancer, but his Charisma would suck rocks. It may not be perfect, but come on. He's the Reanimator, and that's an alchemist archetype. On the plus side, the archetype replaces the Bombs, so there's less of that. He gets to alchemically create undead. Seems a lot closer. :) Piccolo wrote:
I hadn't planned to use Dr. Strange or Rasputin (see my final list). And yes, I've converted 3.5 things before, I have no problems doing the needful in prepping it for PF :) I converted all of Legacy of Fire, I can handle the castle. Thanks for the long post! I'm grateful for the advice :)
The fairy tale witches aren't really 'horror', though I was half-tempted to go that route. In the end I decided to go with some ladies a bit outside my familiar source material, a pair of twin sisters (so I can essentially make the same stats but let the pregen be either) from the Vampire Chronicles series. Yay Wikipedia for having a list of fictional witches. :D Also thought that the Witcher himself, Geralt of Rivia, would make a good ranger. Sure he uses alchemical potions and has a few spells, but they are minor enough that an archetype or some feats can make up for it, and rangers get spellcasting anyhow. He seemed to have a number of combat styles and was the 'monster hunter', so it works well enough for my purposes. Thanks so much for everyone's help! I'll respond to this thread with all the pregens when I am done, if anyone is interested. Alchemist: Herbert West (Lovecraft)
Updated the list. Thought about Van Helsing as an inquisitor, and it does make sense. Moved him there, but now there is no Ranger. I like the idea of a 'headless' horseman for a cavalier. So except for the Ranger, I just need a Witch or Paladin. Book of Eli/Legion feel a bit too modern, and Charlemagne the opposite. Currently I'm leaning towards Roland from the Dark Tower series, as a "Holy Gun" archetype. Willow for Witch could work, or the Witch of the Wastes from Howl's. I am leaning towards the latter. Alchemist: Herbert West (Lovecraft)
Updated the list with some of the new suggestions. Decided to remove some as well to keep things less cluttered. Kept in my personal favorites for each class, though I'm still open to suggestions for taken classes if the fit ends up being better. Still looking for a Cavalier, Paladin, and Witch. Only Cavalier suggestions so far have both been a Nick Cage character (I can't look at Ghost Rider any other way now), and while I love that man in Kick-Ass, I just can't see him amongst all these other icons. :) Thanks so much for all the help so far! I can't wait to start statting some of these up. Alchemist: Herbert West (Lovecraft)
Some great ideas so far! I'm making a list to keep track of what has been suggested and classes that still need ideas (my preferences so far marked with an *): Alchemist: Dr. Moreau (Island of), Herbert West* (Lovecraft)
Could use some more ideas for Barbarian, Cavalier, Cleric, Inquisitor, Monk, Paladin, Summoner, and Witch. :D Would one of the Belmonts be a Paladin? I was going to say fighter, but I'm not sure. Some great ideas so far, I particularly love the idea of Alessa or Sadako as an Oracle (and am torn between them). Please, please, PLEASE keep up the suggestions! You guys are awesome! :D
Oh, also, these should not necessarily be all human. A nice spread of races is desirable, even if the original icon was human. I don't even mind going to some of the non-core races if it makes sense. :)
Hi all, My title is a bit of a misnomer, as I am not at all talking about the current beloved Pathfinder iconics. Ezren, Meriziel, etc. They aren't involved with this. The plan is this: A buddy of mine is getting married, and the night before his wedding asked me to run a game for him. He loves the horror setting. Ravenloft, Lovecraft, you name it, so I thought I'd run something horror-themed. Turns out "Return to Castle Ravenloft" has a 'run in one night' option (start at the castle all leveled up), so that seemed like a good thing to run. This being a one night event, I decided to come up with a bunch of pregens, one of each class, to give the players some options. Then I thought... we could make this even cooler. How about if each pregen was themed off an existing horror icon? Hero, Antihero, some main protagonist of a horror-themed story. The problem here is that, well, I don't actually watch a lot of horror. I have a few ideas of course; Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde for a rage-chemist (or maybe an alchemist most of the time, but barbarian when he 'changes'), Van Helsing for a ranger, Simon Belmont for a fighter, Ash from Evil Dead for a gunslinger, that priest from the Exorcist as a cleric (maybe?). You can see I'm having issues here. The goal is this: Have *one* pregen for each class (or maybe a cool combo like the Hyde one above). 9th level. Themed off a horror icon. More obscure is worth more points, but there is a limit (too obscure and no one will recognize them). I'm taking any suggestions :D This includes all the Core classes, APG classes, Magus, and Gunslinger (not bothering with Samurai/Ninja/Antipaladin).
Well, the PRD only has the main RPG books, so it is missing any alchemical item ever put out in a Player Companion, Campaign Setting, Adventure Path book, etc. Besides poisons (which are in my database, just not online yet), the Archives should be up to date on all alchemical items, including all those misc. sources. If you do see some I am missing, I'd love to know so I can go grab them :)
I still see a bit of traffic coming from this page, though the link here is returning errors due to my site not using the html formatting anymore. To help, here is a new and updated link which points to the Miscellaneous Equipment section. This includes Alchemical Remedies, Alchemical Tools, and Alchemical Weapons, which should help with the original ask of the thread.
While not all the links work and not every familiar is present yet (Bestiary 2 and 3 are in the works), the list here is fairly complete: Familiars
You can also find a convenient list of everything that is available for Pathfinder Society Play from any Paizo source here: www.archivesofnethys.com. Note that actually using these mechanics will still require you to have a copy of the book on hand for the GM, but the site does provide a handy reference so you know what to buy ahead of time. :)
While in the past I've mostly relegated my updates to the Facebook fan page and the site itself, I've decided to start including them here as well. As of today, I've finished adding in all relevant material from the new books released this week. I've added links below to pages describing exactly what was added from each book for your convenience. Enjoy! Main Page - Archives of Nethys New Additions

In regards to Layout, I would be interested if anyone has critiques or suggestions for the Archives. I've always attempted to keep the site as simple and user-friendly as possible with the UI, and will be adding more Custom Search options (like Spells has) to quickly find whatever is needed. Barring that, I am open to ideas, as UI has never been my area of expertise (and the primary reason the site is so simplistic).
I appreciate all of the recommendations for the Archives! :) Being a single-man operation, I've been doing my best to keep the site up to date, and with the creation of some C#/SQL tools I've been adding material a lot faster. Currently the only books not on the site are:
The January 2013 releases are also missing, but I only received my PDFs for those in the last few days. I will be adding those next, then go back to finishing UE. As always, if you guys have any comments/criticism/suggestion, please hit me up using asknethys@karuikage.net (or comment on my Facebook fan page).
For anyone ever curious about the official names of things, don't forget that all of Paizo's published mechanics (though no 3rd party material) can be found on the Archives of Nethys, using the community use policy.
As mentioned above, all of the Skymetals (and many others) can be found on the Archives of Nethys, using the Community Use Policy, here: http://archivesofnethys.com/SpecialMaterials.aspx.
Grayfeather wrote: So being everyone in view sees the missiles popping the third guy from the right basically they can negate the effect of the spell like a normal illusion correct? While I agree magic missile hits the caster, I want to focus on this point. Are you implying that, once magic missile hits, the rest of the group can then ignore the effects of mirror image? Because I would argue against that. Mirror image is not negated just because the spell hit the proper person, for all we know the images could be constantly cycling around in an attempt to hide the proper person. Or maybe the illusion encapsulates the missile and shows it hitting all of the images. Whatever the case, I would definitely *definitely* not allow magic missile to instantly 'kill' a mirror image spell. Way too easy and it cripples the spell.
Hi all, I'm currently running a group through RotRL on our private forums. It's my first PBP in quite some time (the last time I ran one was nearly 10 years ago on these old popular RPG boards with their own dice), and it is going relatively smoothly so far. One hiccup I've come across is the best way to keep track of character information. Currently, the players have filled out a PDF character sheet and sent it to me. While this is ok and I can open them up to check things, it doesn't allow for easy updating and I'd much rather have some kind of spreadsheet on google docs that we can all see/edit/update at any time. I've looked into a few Excel character sheets, but most are extremely complicated (though awesome) and not really what I had in mind. I thought about making my own, but figured I'd see if there was something already out there. Does anyone know of a decent excel sheet I can put up on a google docs for each member of the group? Or have any other alternatives to displaying character information/making updates/tracking special abilities/hp/gear/etc? Thanks!
Here you go. :)
JBGamer2300 wrote: I'm not really talking about just a fighter with good mental stats, though that's all well and good and I could totally see myself doing something like that. However, the Lore Warden thing sounds interesting. It's not quite what I meant, but it sounds like a good middle ground between slashey slashey fighter guy and my hypothetical rain death on things with my mind guy. It's in the advanced guide right? Guess I'll need to pick up that PDF. Here is the mentioned Lore Warden. There are some other archetypes present in the list that lend more towards an intelligent fighter as well, along with prestige classes like the Student of War.
I remember having a lot of discussions about this back in the day when I was writing up statblocks for summons and other creations. As far as I gathered, the *only* time a creature gains 1.5 STR is if he has a single natural attack. If he has more but only uses one, he doesn't get the bonus, it stays at what is listed. There was one exception I remember getting (whether it was from Sean, Jason, I don't recall), but that was in regards to Multi-Attack from a Druid Animal Companion. They get the feat at a certain point, and if the creature only has one attack, it gives them an extra one at -5. Normally this would stop them from qualifying for the 1.5 STR bit, but the recommendation was to allow it to persist so the 'bonus' doesn't become detrimental.
The Archives of Nethys shows what gets replaced within each Archetype on their tables. You can use this to easily see, at a glance, what archetypes can be combined. It is up to date with every Paizo-released book that includes archetypes (only missing books are Bestiary 2-3, GMG, NPC Codex, and Ultimate Equipment).
