Ah, Syndir. I should have known Nesipho would invite you.

Syndir could only agree with the pirate's assessment.

We do indeed all have our secrets. Some have been shared and others havent. That you jumped in to help us defeat these...things; speaks volumes and you offer to be a guide here Schrim. I say we take his offer. There is no doubting that we could use all the allies we can get right now.

Kamlann shrugs. "Looks like you pass for now, doc," he says. "I'd rather have you and those knives in front of me than behind me right now anyway."

Dark Archive

Male Human Magus 3

"That is why I told you to stay with us," Kamlann snaps irritably at Farid before turning to look at Jelani. "See if you can get him stitched back together, will you? I don't think all that red stuff is supposed to be on the outside." The mercenary turns his gaze on Seamus and Syndir. "We need to sweep upstairs before we rest. Something pushed that statue out onto the Qadiran, and I'd like to be sure it was one of these things before we let our guards down again." Finally, he looks at Schrim. "And you. I don't know who in the Nine Hells you are, but you have - for now - earned a moment of our time to explain yourself before we kill you too, just to be sure. I'd use it wisely."

Kamlamm roars in fury, spittle flying as he slashes at the monk in a frenzy.

Scimitar attack, two-handed and including flank: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (2) + 9 = 11
Damage: 1d6 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9.

Dark Archive

Male Human Magus 3

Always happy to ignore damage. Schrim's up?

Dark Archive

Male Human Magus 3

Kamlann winces at the wound, but it appears little more than a scratch, and so he disregards it. Instead, he focuses on just trying to finish the undead monk off.

Switching to one attack, two-handed, no spell games. I'll 5 ft step out after so Farid can get in.

Scimitar attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11, damage 1d6 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11.

...and here we go again...

Dark Archive

Male Human Magus 3

My AC is indeed 21. And man, if its is 14 or 15, I'm gonna be ticked...

Schrim Daskovi wrote:

Edit: Wow, two nat ones in a row. That's kinda rare.

Heh. Not in this group. Go back upthread and read our first fight again. For that matter, note that Kamlann should only fail a concentration check on a cantrip about 1/4 of the time, and so far in this battle, he's 2-for-5.

Fort save: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6.

Dark Archive

Male Human Magus 3

Assuming the thing is still up...

Kamlann sneers his contempt for the "monk"'s flailing attacks and murmurs the same arcane phrase he's been using, allowing the conjuration to drip down his blade before he strikes.

Using spell combat again. Casting acid splash on the defensive: concentration check (DC 15): 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (2) + 9 = 11

Unfortunately, the magus has to duck one of those "flailing" attacks, and to his frustration, the magic wraps around the blade and then dissipates before fully forming. He snarls angrily, not sounding much more human than the undead, before lashing out with the blade, empowered with his magical energies but no actual spell.

Lost the spell, so no acid splash attack, so just the standard attack with the -2 penalty for spell combat.
Scimitar attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13
Scimitar damage: 1d6 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9

Dark Archive

Male Human Magus 3

Seamus is up, I believe?

Dark Archive

Male Human Magus 3

I'd rather post for him than lose him, at least right now, because several of us already need healing and the fight ain't even over yet.

Dark Archive

Male Human Magus 3

Kamlann smiles back, but the effect is much the same. "I don't like you either, ugly," he says, showing his teeth.

As I suspect it is likely to be relevant, a quick reminder that I currently have shield up, and thus my AC is 21.

Dark Archive

Male Human Magus 3

Kamlann, seeing Farid's grevious wounds, takes a moment to display his compassion as he snaps, "Maybe next time you'll listen when I tell you not to run off, eh Qadiran?" before turning to help against the last of the undead monks.

Move action to W10.
Standard action: two-handed attack with scimitar on the undead in X11.
Scimitar attack 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (14) + 7 = 21
Scimitar damage 1d6 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10

Dark Archive

Male Human Magus 3

Actually, since Farid just went, it is Seamus' turn now.

Dark Archive

Male Human Magus 3

Also, R7 is still up.

Dark Archive

Male Human Magus 3

Yeah, I've noticed several people dropping off the PbP grid in the last week as well, which I assume is Sandy-related.

Dark Archive

Male Human Magus 3

*raises hand*

Dark Archive

Male Human Magus 3

Kamlann moves into the room, past Seamus, and attempts to aid Farid against his last opponent.

Move through the curtains and up next to Farid, stepping over the body of the dead, as shown on the map. Standard action: attack the target in R7. Should I reroll my attack, or use the roll from above?

Dark Archive

Male Human Magus 3

There's still the guy in R7 - but since these guys have that lovely magic DR, I don't know if you wouldn't rather just let Kamlann deal with him instead. If you don't move, that's where I'm headed, regardless.

Apropos of nothing, what round of combat is this?

Dark Archive

Male Human Magus 3

Clearly we all misread the map. I'm going to let Seamus redo his action first before I do mine.

Dark Archive

Male Human Magus 3

Kamlann adjusts his position slightly as reflected on the map, in case Farid wants a slightly safer spot for a flank and continues his mystical-acid-powered assault.

Exact same routine as last round. Concentration check for casting defensively: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (4) + 9 = 13. Since that fails, I lose the spell; I can still attack with spell combat, although I also still take the appropriate penalties.
Scimitar attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21, miss chance (1-20 misses) 1d100 ⇒ 36
Scimitar damage: 1d6 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7.

Dark Archive

Male Human Magus 3

Kamlann, never the trusting sort at the best of times, grunts, "So you pushed the statue out the window, then?"

Dark Archive

Male Human Magus 3

GM:
Taking the questions in order: two attacks is actually what Kamlann's built to do, but I've only just started being in situations where I could. By using spell combat and spellstrike together, Kamlann can cast a spell and make the associated attack roll (in this case, acid splash, via the close range arcana) with his scimitar because of spellstrike as part of spell combat, and then make a second attack as normal, also as part of spell combat. Using a cantrip makes it repeatable indefinitely. The "traditional" method for this is to use arcane mark, but I think it's worth the arcana slot (for close range) to actually be able to do damage with the cantrip you're using as well as your weapon; moreover, a few GMs will pitch a fit because "arcane mark doesn't require an attack roll."

And no, concentrate is just 1/day. No arcana point needed.

Will save: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 13

Dark Archive

Male Human Magus 3

You need to check for concealment on that roll, Seamus.

Kamlann steps forward as he sees the undead moving amid the curtains. He murmurs the same spell as before, taking care not to expose himself to the thing's attacks, before slashing at it twice with his blade - but the first time, the weapon sheds tiny droplets of acid that burn the fabric of the curtains before the blade even touches them.

Five foot step as indicated on the map.
Full round action: spell combat, using acid splash with close range to deliver the spell through my scimitar. Concentration check, DC 15, for casting defensively: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (2) + 9 = 11. Using concentrate arcana to reoll with a +4 bonus: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (8) + 13 = 21.
First attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19; miss chance (1-20 is a miss): 1d100 ⇒ 89.
First attack damage: 1d6 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6 plus 1d3 ⇒ 3 acid.
Second attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16; miss chance (1-20 is a miss): 1d100 ⇒ 15.
Second attack damage: 1d6 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7.

Dark Archive

Male Human Magus 3

Kamlann hurries after Seamus, and it is only that he does not have breath to spare that keeps him from continuing his cursing.

Double move again, as indicated on the map. Back to the corpses.

Dark Archive

Male Human Magus 3

The only threat left is inside the building. Here, if it helps...

Hearing the crossbow shot inside and seeing that the immediate threat is dealt with, Kamlann snaps, "Haggrathy, with me! You two!" The Chelaxian points at Syndir and Jelani, then at the masked newcomer. "Watch him! Damn fool Qadiran..." He rushes toward the door to see what trouble Farid has gotten himself into.

Dark Archive

Male Human Magus 3

I think that target is dead, Seamus. Again, I mean. You might want to reconsider.

Dark Archive

Male Human Magus 3

Kamlann clambers out of the pool, following Seamus toward the walking corpse with his blade at the ready. Double move, nothing fancy.

Dark Archive

Male Human Magus 3

While I wait for Seamus' action to be resolved, how much of my move is required to get back out of the pool?

Dark Archive

Male Human Magus 3

Kamlann, seeing that the undead is extremely focused on Seamus, lashes out with his scimitar - but he wraps arcane energies around the blade as he strikes, and a viscous, fuming substance spatters across the pool as he swings.

Using spell combat, not casting defensively since the undead shouldn't threaten while it's grappling. The spell is acid splash, using close range arcana to turn it into a touch spell for use with spellstrike.

Scimitar attack with spellstrike: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24
Scimitar damage plus acid splash: 1d6 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7 plus 1d3 ⇒ 1
Crit confirm: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19
Crit damage: 1d6 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10 plus 1d3 ⇒ 1
Spell combat attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25
Damage: 1d6 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10
Crit confirm: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9
Crit damage: 1d6 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6

Dark Archive

Male Human Magus 3

Grappling doesn't work like that in PF. However, Kamlann's heading that way.

"No, damn your eyes!" Kamlann shouts at Farid, but he turns and heads toward Seamus. [B]"Stay close!"[b] As he moves, he intones a protective incantation.

Standard action to cast shield, swift action to channel an arcane point into his scimitar, move action to get into the water. Posting from phone means I can't move myself on the map, but I think I can get to X27.

Dark Archive

Male Human Magus 3

Initiative 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7

Dark Archive

Male Human Magus 3

Kamlann would have circled the other way, but that's adjusted now.

Your buckler should really be masterwork unless you want to suffer its ACP on your dagger attacks.

Weapon Finesse (Combat)

You are trained in using your agility in melee combat, as opposed to brute strength.

Benefit: With a light weapon, rapier, whip, or spiked chain made for a creature of your size category, you may use your Dexterity modifier instead of your Strength modifier on attack rolls. If you carry a shield, its armor check penalty applies to your attack rolls.

Dark Archive

Male Human Magus 3

Kamlann's scimitar is out as soon as he recognizes the bodies for what they are. "The dead aren't a concern unless they get back up again," he says flatly. "If whatever did this is still here, though, that is a concern. Leave the bodies - don't split up until we've checked every corner."

Dark Archive

Male Human Magus 3

Sounds about right to me.

Dark Archive

Male Human Magus 3

Yep. Let's move.

Dark Archive

Male Human Magus 3

Perhaps surprisingly, Kamlann doesn't seem terribly upset by this arrangement (not any moreso than his usual sour demeanor, anyway). He does chuckle a little, though, at Syndir's description of the situation as "indentured servitude." "Sounds like merc work to me," he shrugs. "I'm a merc. I've certainly had less pleasant employers, I can say that much already. As long as I'm getting paid, there's nothing to complain about." He looks over at the map. "Anybody got some idea which way to head?"

Dark Archive

Male Human Magus 3

"Skipping past the threats," Kamlann asks dryly, "what do we get out of this? I'm rather fond of things like food, drink and a roof over my head. There some kind of payment in all this?"

Dark Archive

Male Human Magus 3

Kamlann looks sideways at Haggrathy, trying to see if he "knows who you're working for," since Kamlann has absolutely no idea. Otherwise, though, he maintains his scowling silence.

Dark Archive

Male Human Magus 3

Kamlann maintains his scowl, and does not sit with his back to the door.

Dark Archive

Male Human Magus 3

Overreacting? Kamlann thinks. We'd have to know what the proper reaction was before we could overdo it, Qadiran - and I doubt any of us have enough information to figure that out... He watches the oncoming group warily, hand on the hilt of his blade.

Dark Archive

Male Human Magus 3

Kamlann's eyes narrow.

This is about the elixir, then.

His gaze shifts to Jelani. Of course they'd want him back. And me with him. And the others... Just here to help? Or is there more to it? What's their link?

Aloud, though, the Chelaxian merely says, "I think that's a very good idea," as he falls into step with the Qadiran.

Dark Archive

Male Human Magus 3

Kamlann's expression - never clear at the best of times - darkens to thunderous levels at the sight of the waiting pair. "Devils curse you all, there is something behind all this. Or someone," he murmurs.

Strings. Strings everywhere, tugging us along. Someone with resources, and for whatever reason, someone who wants us together. Someone who wanted Haggrathy's trail cold, someone who wants the Qadiran alive, someone who wants Guldis with us. Someone... who wants us to succeed... He frowns, watching the reunion between Syndir and Farid. But who? And perhaps more importantly, why?

Dark Archive

Male Human Magus 3

Kamlann snorts. "At least it wasn't anything you couldn't stand to lose," he replies, then shrugs and turns away.

Farid Heydar wrote:
Farid stares right back, "I was there searching for someone who stole from me. Syndir agreed to accompany me because we were friends. Why that thing attacked him I am afraid has died with him - if even he knew. In the time that I have journeyed with him he never spoke of enemies. Why were you there? What enemies do you have that will strike at you that we should know about Kamlann?"

Kamlann tilts his head to one side, considering Farid for moment, before nodding. "An answer for an answer, then. I've made enemies, to be sure, Qadiran. I work for the Aspis Consortium, and not everyone likes how we do business - usually the ones just a bit slower than we are." He smiles nastily, then continues. "But all the people who want to kill me as badly as your friend's enemies wanted to kill him? They're all back in Cheliax, and as long as I don't go back, they've got no reason to come after me here."

"What was stolen from you?" Kamlann asks next.

Dark Archive

Male Human Magus 3

Toward the evening of the first day (assuming nothing happens beforehand to change things), Kamlann strides up to Farid and fixes him with a stare. "All right, Qadiran. I've heard Haggrathy's story for why his past almost got me killed. I think it's time I heard your part of the story. What were you and the nobleman doing in that tavern? What brought you to Totra, and that thrice-damned elemental with you?"

Garden Tool wrote:

That we most certainly are.

Kamlann appears briefly on deck to scan the horizon, then disappears below again to start preparing his spells for the day.

Dark Archive

Male Human Magus 3

Amusingly enough, Kamlann is also not going to ask, because he's so frustrated at having to give up as much control over his destiny as he has to get on the boat that he doesn't want to know - having agreed to this in the first place, he's just washing his hands of it and going where he's being taken.

Dark Archive

Male Human Magus 3

That's correct. Kamlann is suggesting he's going to pay you less because of the baggage.

Dark Archive

Male Human Magus 3

Kamlann shakes his head. "Right. Stay here, with an arson and murder charge wrapped around my neck," he snarls. "Look, Haggrathy, I don't care one whit what you did or whether or not you actually did it. I just need to know what sort of resources your enemies are going to throw at us. That bounty hunter was bad enough -" - and I owe him, oh yes, I do, and Asmodeus knows I always pay my debts - "but if there's more coming I need to know about it."

The Chelaxian grimaces as he sits down on a crate. "In case you had forgotten, before that 'sand beastie' showed up, you and I were in the middle of negotiations over your assistance on a task of mine. We're not done with that - but I'd like to know how much of a premium I need to include for the extra complications."
