About Kali Nassim

Our GM uses the "4d6, drop the lowest, assign as you see fit" approach to stat generation (with a reroll if the scores are completely unworkable). I did not purposely min/max, and built the whole character concept around having a Str of 7.

Kali both looks and identifies as Vudrani but she is actually of mixed ethnicity. Her father, Akmal, is a Vudrani† trader and merchant who left his home in Jalmeray as a young man to work for a shipping company that served the Inner Sea region. Over the years he worked his way up the organization and eventually was made the manager of their northern routes, reaching as far as southern Varisia. Kali's mmother, Denea, is an outspoken woman of Chelish descent that grew up in Korvosa and became a scholar and researcher of Avistani history with an emphasis on Thassilon.

Denea was working at Aneka University when she and Akmal met and eventually married, and she scandalized her parents by leaving a tenured position to launch a merchant business with her husband. They spent the first few years traveling frequently, personally overseeing major trade deals and establishing new business routes and contacts, and their daughter Kali would accompany them on long voyages as a toddler.

This changed in 4694 when Kali was four years old. On a long trip over land, she contracted malaria and due to ill fortune and poor timing it was several days before she could be brought to a cleric to be cured. The damage from that disease proved to be lasting, and Kali grew up smaller and weaker than virtually every other child her age.

Realizing that a life of constant travel had almost cost their only child her life, Akmal and Denea settled in the quiet community of Sandpoint (it was less expensive than Magnimar, but nearly as conveniently located) and operated their small but growing business out of a warehouse near the waterfront. They still traveled with Kali as she grew up, including the occasional long voyage to visit her grandparents in Niswan, but less frequently so.

Kali had a difficult time adjusting to the life in Sandpoint. She had only a handful of close friends, and being an obvious foreigner girl who was smaller and slighter than others her age made her an easy target for the taunting of other children, a problem that was made worse by her awkward social skills. She found herself the butt of jokes, and the target of snide comments and laughter, and as she grew older this harassment turned to bullying which gradually grew more frequent and more violent.

One of her closest friends was the only other obviously foreigner girl in town: Ameiko Kaijitsu. It was Ameiko that helped her through the worst of her early teenage years, teaching her how to be more aware of her surroundings, escape a fight before it started, and use her small size and speed to her advantage. For those times when Kali's skills would fail her, Ameiko also had a knack for "finding" healing potions, and would escort her to Koya and Niska for occasional mending. Kali was too ashamed to tell her parents the extent what was happening to her, and this arrangement saved her from a number of potentially humiliating conversations.

Kali's family relocated to Magnimar when she turned 19 after several trying years in Sandpoint, finding their business increasingly in peril due to the strange events that seemed to plague the town. It was there that Kali began studying magic, and she graduated and completed her apprenticeship in the spring of 4712.

Akmal is also of mixed ethnicity. Though he, too, appears mostly Vudrani, his paternal grandfather is Kelishite.
