...a frightened/panicked character is likely to flee directly into uncleared portions of the dungeon... Isn't a frightened/panicked character MORE likely to flee to the known exit (ie, the way he came in)? I understand that path may be blocked, but if I'm being chased by worm-infested undead I think I'm going to head for the front door rather than hope for an escape route in the basement. Of course, thoughts like these make me immediately want to create an OOTS-style encounter where a bunch of fear-aura critters lurk around a trapped door conveniently marked "WAY OUT"... ;-)
I'll do a write up of this fight at some other time, as it was one of those battles that myself and my PCs play D+D for. I'll say. Holy cow, was that one of the hardest fights I've EVER played in any edition of D&D -- and also one that I got to think about for a WEEK before we ran it, since Rakshaka was kind enough to leave us on the "Ambush!" cliffhanger. What an awesome, brilliant session of gaming... ...even if most of us did end up in pieces on the carpet. ;) -- Kalfou, who plays Corbin the Warlock

What happened: After having been kidnapped and impersonated by the dopplegangers (man, what a fun session that was to play!), Corbin was ready to lay down some vengeance on his captors. After using an eldritch blast to coup-de-grace his paralyzed double, the party rushed into the mirror maze. An already tough fight turned lethal when one of the doppleganger fighters maneuvered away from the party's necromancer, found a path to bring him adjacent to the wounded warlock, and scored a critical hit with his longsword. Fortunately, a benevolent DM and a dark pact with Mephistopheles has seen Corbin returned to life, at the cost of a portion of his soul's essence stripped away... This AP, our LE Hextor-worshipping party, and our DM Rakshaka are the coolest ever. :D |
